room topic changed to Unconventional Tag Fusion: meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/a/5466 (no tags)
Seems like the Unconventional Tag Fusion fortnightly topic idea has gained some traction, however, there is a bit of discussion on how exactly it should be implemented. Since it's moving towards the top of the list (and will likely be top in a couple of fortnights time), I figured I should open up the discussion to flesh out the "rules"...
Core options I see are:
1) topic is literally "Unconventional Tag Fusion" - any unconventional pair of tags are acceptable; up to individual users to self-police if their pairing is truly "unconventional"
2) topic is a specific pair of tags - a single specific pair of tags are chosen for a given fortnightly challenge (eg. one time it might be + and another fortnight it could be + ); specific pairings would be suggested in the same way as any other fortnightly challenge topic
3) topic is a single tag, unconventionally fused (i.e. "Unconventional [some-tag] Fusion") - a single specific tag is chosen for a given fortnightly challenge and can be "fused" with any other uncommon tag (eg. one time it might be "Unconventional Fusion", and users may release a + puzzle or a + puzzle, etc); single fusion tags would be suggested in the same way as other fortnightly challenge topics
Option 1 was my original intention (and thus what people are currently voting for), but I'm happy for it to be adjusted...
I commented on the post, but I have concerns that a specific pair (2 above) would be too restrictive
3 seems like an ok compromise, but may end up feeling a little similar to previous fortnightly challenges (though that's obviously not necessarily a negative) - of course it also has the advantage of allowing many new fortnightly topics for the future

I personally don't see any issue with option 1. I'm all for it - who says fortnightly topic challenges need to be specifically about a single specific tag? We just happen to have used single tags for all the others.

Yeah, that's how i feel - go option 1 this time, and if it's well received, then we can still have versions of option 3 later down the road. (or other twists like "unconventional 3-tag fusion" or "restricted tag fusion" where there's a set of 6 or so tags, and you use any 2)
Only other question is whether there needs to be any rules around what counts as "unconventional"...
I think since fortnightly challenges are just for fun and are mainly to get people's creative juices flowing, there's no need and people can self police... but it's plausible we could come up with a SEDE query to define "acceptably unconventional pairs"

Right! Or maybe if it's been a while we can reuse tag challenges - we could even have this be a regular thing if it's well-liked.

I also like Option 1 as it allows for maximum creativity. And yeah, I think it's fine to let people decide what unconventional means.

I don't think there'll be any issues with people picking and together, or and .

For reference, here's a query of algorithmically generated unconventional tag pairs. Takes all permutations of tags with >100 puzzles (top ~30 tags) and shows tag pairs with less than 10 puzzles.

I like option 1 too, this will be an interesting twist to the fortnightly challenge

I like it as well :) However, I am not sure I will be able to come up with anything, but it will be interesting to see what the others will create. :)

I would love a visual + cipher + mathematics + rhyme + enigmatic puzzle

It's accepted for the OP to post a (duly credited) puzzle not of the OP's own devising. Is this accepted for a puzzle posted for a fortnightly challenge?

@humn Ooh, that actually gave me an idea.

an idea for a regular puzzle, @Deusovi? the two terms aren't completely contradictory

Yep!

right on! a quickie? (enjoy getting spur of the moment ideas that actually work out)

Eh, medium length. Not as complicated as some of the bigger puzzles here, but still should take a decent amount of time.

Nice and tantalizing in the meanwhile.

Hopefully I'll be able to find time to flesh it out.

Any hint for the moment on what tags you're thinking of?

Those two. Maybe also ?

Sounding more and more . [continued in the future, just driving-by for now, you probably are too]
Tagged with both [computer-puzzle] and [no-computers]? Isn't that an oxymoron? — rand al'thor Jun 27 '15 at 12:08
