This was just a tangential remark in a discussion on MathOverflow Meta:
I'm all for it. If you figure out a way to get audio files hosted somewhere, that'd be great. I could imagine asking people to specify prounciation using IPA, though maybe that would have limited utility for non-linguists. Personally, I think there could still be value even if we had to resort to writing things like "Kleene is pronounced like "clean-y"" (I admit I'd also find it amusing!). Of course, it would ultimately be up to the community whether it should remain open. — Tim Campion ♦ 17 hours ago
Still, I wanted to check whether there are some sites which regularly use some site to host sound files.
I found this post from 2011 on your meta:

Q: YouTube and SoundCloud embedding is now enabled

Jeff AtwoodIt is now possible to embed YouTube (audio/video) and SoundCloud (audio) clips in posts here. Here's how: Upload your audio to the respective site. When composing your post, paste the URL to the uploaded audio in the body, on a line by itself, like so: I'm trying to reproduce this performance....

Is SoundCloud still being used for such purposes? Can upload of small files be done by people who only have free account - or would one need some kind of subscription to do that?
When I search for posts containing url:"*soundcloud.com*", I get some posts which are relatively recent among the results.

Maybe it's something that CM's would need to enable.
@MartinSleziak This answer appears to have the link in the required form in the markdown. But it's not being embedded. Just a link.
Or maybe it expired or got broken somehow.
The only difference I see is http vs https between the example in the meta post and the recent answer.

@luserdroog The issue I am asking about is not embedding.
Embedding wouldn't make much sense on a site which uses such things only rarely.
What I wanted to ask was mainly whether an "Average Joe" would be able to use SoundCloud to upload/record a short sound file with pronunciation of some word.
Or whether a user who wants to this would actually need to have an account on SoundClound where they would have to pay some montly/yearly fee.
I.e., whether a subscription is needed even if a user only needs to upload a few rather small files.
The reasons I asked here was mainly because I thought that there might be many people around here who actually use SoundCloud.
