Question for anyone: there was a post that showed how to get as highlighted correctly when using listings. I can't find the post again but would like to located it. Does anyone know of it or a good search term for it since I can't find in the search.

@Pankracy I don't use fontspec very much, are you using xetex or luatex?

7:40 PM
Claudio Fiandrino has become a Lëtzebuerger. :) guitex.org/home/forum/5-tex-e-latex/…

by the way, where is the chat link now?

@ClickMe I was just going to say, the header seemed to have changed instantly. :) Chat is still available via click from the right column (lower down).

@ClickMe from the main site to here? down at the bottom

@Werner, @DavidCarlisle: OK. Thank you.

ach
Is there anyone here with experience of mylatexformat with TexLive ? pdflatex does not parse the first line of my document (containing the line %&preamble where preamble.fmt is my format) even when -parse-first-line is passed
however, compiling with pdflatex \&preamble document.tex works

7:44 PM
@ClickMe althought I usually find typing ch into firefox's location field is enough:-)

ach
I should point out that the same procedure works just fine on my Win PC with MikTeX

@DavidCarlisle i see.

ach
huh, %&"preamble" doesnt work but %&preamble does
???

Which one is the correct one?
\begin{align*}
\lim_{x\to 1^-}\frac{|x-1|}{x-1}
		&= \lim_{x\to 1}\frac{-(x-1)}{x-1} \\
		&= \lim_{x\to 1}(-1)\\
		&= -1
\end{align*}

\begin{align*}
\lim_{x\to 1^-}\frac{|x-1|}{x-1}
		&= \lim_{x\to 1^-}\frac{-(x-1)}{x-1} \\
		&= \lim_{x\to 1^-}(-1)\\
		&= -1
\end{align*}

@egreg Yay! :)

7:56 PM
@ClickMe difference?
@ach would you expect quotes there?

@DavidCarlisle the first one x\to 1, the second one x\to 1^-

ach
@DavidCarlisle well if my format file had spaces I would need to use them

@ClickMe ah yes:-)
@ach people who put spaces in filenames should be condemned to use vim for the rest of their lives

ach
that's funny
but is straight from the documentation :)

@ach bah humbug

ach
7:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle just curious, I avoid spaces for a reason, but it just irks me that I don't understand

@ach I haven't looked at that documentation for a long time does %"&preamble" work?

ach
@DavidCarlisle on WinX / MikTeX: yes
on TL / *Nix: no
%&preamble works on TL (and I assume will work on Win/Miktex too)
yeah the no quotation marks version works on both

@ach might be worth raising on the TL list...

ach
@DavidCarlisle could you link it ? I have not looked into TL much at all, let alone reported something before

@ach tex-live at tug dot org tug.org/mailman/listinfo/tex-live

ach
8:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle thanks, I'll raise it and see what they say

@ClickMe The first is wrong: if x>1, the function is positive, so it cant have a negative limit.

@egreg But x approaches 1 from the left so |x-1| must be converted to -(x-1), right?

@ClickMe The second one is correct, in fact.
@ClickMe Of course x-1 is a distraction: the function takes the value 1 for x>1 and –1 for x<1. Just like |x|/x

@egreg The ^- must still be used after converting |x-1| to -(x-1)?

@ClickMe If the liimit exists, the function f(x)=|x| would be differentiable in 0, which it's clearly false.

I'm willing to write a "soft answer" to the following post that is closed:

Q: Draw an aircraft with Tikz

physicsI want to draw a plane using the Tikz tool. You will find, attached, a screenshot.

@ClickMe You're taking the wrong approach. Saying \lim_{x\to a^-}f(x) simply means that you restrict the domain of f to the numbers in the domain of f that are less than a.

@Werner you want us to vote it open again?

@egreg Then the correct step should be the first one or the second one?

@Werner I'm tempted to vote to reopen, then.

@DavidCarlisle If there is interest. I'll post a CW answer that discourages using TikZ (or PStricks) for extremely technical (and mostly 3D) drawings like this since other tools exist.
@PauloCereda I've used Google Sketchup and it's rich library contained in the 3D Warehouse that has a host of 3D objects, including airplanes.

8:21 PM
@Werner agreed. people should use picture mode.

@Werner Then I'll vote. :)

@DavidCarlisle Oh dear... I'm looking forward to your "picture airplane".

@Werner wait for a 100-upvote answer. :)

@PauloCereda :)
It'll most likely be a paper airplane... drawn on graphing paper.

One more vote for the aircraft.

8:29 PM
@PauloCereda down or up?

@ClickMe I meant for reopening it. :)

@PauloCereda OK. thanks.

...
...seems like @StefanKottwitz is overruling the votes... :-|

@Werner I'm going to apply for a job at Boeing

@DavidCarlisle RollsRoyce surely

8:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle Beautiful. I see, like a true artist, you've kept the source hidden from the public. Those design elements are surely proprietary.

@DavidCarlisle Best. Airplane. Ever. :)

@PauloCereda I particularly enjoy the pseudo-perspective that's been incorporated with the "visibly-shorter" wing.

@Werner I suspect this is a RAF prototype. :)

@Werner I like to keep it accurate

A: Draw an aircraft with Tikz

David CarlisleIt was suggested in chat http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/9482087#9482087 That picture mode would be the ideal tool for the job here: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \begin{picture}(200,100) \put(30,40){\line(1,0){150}} \put(30,40){\line(0,1){60}} \put(30,100){\line(...

It's all @Werner's idea
@egreg It's a test match so it will go on for 5 days (England almost beat the record for the slowest scoring rate in the history of English test cricket yesterday:-)

I would just like to note that the TeX Stack Exchange community is one of the best communities I have encountered on the internet so far and that it is a pleasure and an absolute joy to be a part of it (although I am not talking much, I read Q&As every day). I appreciate it! Perhaps beautiful typography is one of the ways to find the best in people. :-)Harold Cavendish 33 mins ago

Hi all :) it's been a while ....

@cmhughes Hi Chris! :)

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo :) How's it going? :)

@cmhughes Still sick, and now voiceless. :)

@PauloCereda oh no, I'm sorry :(

@cmhughes I'm recovering. :)

11:30 PM
@PauloCereda good to hear :) has it affected your chatting ability? :)

@cmhughes Nope! :)

@PauloCereda phew!
@PauloCereda still loving the arara tool- hard to imagine life without :)

@cmhughes awwww <3
Wait for v4, it will be worse, I guess. :)
I'm afraid of ruining everything. :)

@PauloCereda lol looking forward to it :) I know it'll be sweet :)

@cmhughes I think only in one of the upcoming TL2013 updates. :)

@PauloCereda :)
@ClickMe ace :)

@cmhughes ace hardware. :-)

@PauloCereda I'm hoping to write an arara rule to make chapter files from a mainfile- will post a question if I get stuck :)
@ClickMe yes, indeed :)

@cmhughes What would you like to achieve? :)

@PauloCereda let's say you have a mainfile.tex that \includes chapter files: lions.tex and zebras.tex
and then you want to make separate chapter files lions.pdf and zebras.pdf
I think it should be possible- don't tell me just yet though, I want to try it first :)
(I have a bash script that does it, but it's a pain when I go onto a Windows machine)

11:36 PM
@cmhughes Are lions.tex and zebras.tex complete? I mean, with headers and such?

@PauloCereda nope, they're separate chapter files- no preamble :)
@PauloCereda just like in

Q: arara: making a rule to compile the main file from a chapter file

cmhughesI am really enjoying the arara tool for automating the compilations of my documents- thanks Paulo and the team :) I work on a few projects that have a main file (say myfile.tex) that \includes its 'chapter' files. A typical example is myfile.tex % arara: pdflatex \documentclass{article} \begi...

@cmhughes are there windows machines without bash?

@DavidCarlisle I didn't know there were any with bash... ?

@cmhughes Ah. I don't think it's possible. :) (/note to self, add document templates for v5)

@PauloCereda perhaps if I use an external command cp.... ?

11:39 PM
@cmhughes windows without cygwin isn't usable:-)

@DavidCarlisle agreed- although cygwin is pretty painful compared to the real thing :)

@cmhughes: we could write a rule that creates a temp.tex file containing mainfile.tex, sed the main file to remove all \include's but the one you want and them compile. :)

@PauloCereda that's a little more complicated than I was thinking... :) I was going to make use of the fact that you can call pdflatex with something like pdflatex "\def\myfile{module${i}} \input{mainfile.tex}"
and then in mainfile.tex you have:
% arara: pdflatex
\documentclass{report}

% this bit is useful because it helps make modules
\ifdefined\myfile
\includeonly{\myfile}
\else
% include everything !
\fi

\begin{document}

\include{lions}
\include{zebras}

\end{document}

@cmhughes hmmmmm

@PauloCereda I'll have a look at it and let you know- I can tell I haven't explained it well :)

11:45 PM
or simpler ` pdflatex "\includeonly{module${i}} \input{mainfile.tex}"`
then you don't need the \ifdefined block

@DavidCarlisle cool- I didn't know that would work- thanks David :)

@cmhughes includeonly doesn't do much:-)
\def\includeonly#1{%
  \@partswtrue
  \edef\@partlist{\zap@space#1 \@empty}}

@DavidCarlisle sweet- how did you have this so readily accessible?

@cmhughes I always have emacs open and latex.ltx is always in one buffer

@DavidCarlisle ah, nice idea

11:49 PM
or there is:
!!/texdef -t latex \includeonly

Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode: Here's the output from texdef:

\includeonly:
macro:->\@latex@error {Can be used only in preamble}\@eha

(in preamble)
\includeonly:
macro:#1->\@partswtrue \edef \@partlist {\zap@space #1 \@empty }
