Question for anyone: there was a post that showed how to get as highlighted correctly when using listings. I can't find the post again but would like to located it. Does anyone know of it or a good search term for it since I can't find in the search.

@Pankracy I don't use fontspec very much, are you using xetex or luatex?

Is there anyone here with experience of mylatexformat with TexLive ? pdflatex does not parse the first line of my document (containing the line %&preamble where preamble.fmt is my format) even when -parse-first-line is passed

however, compiling with pdflatex \&preamble document.tex works

@ClickMe althought I usually find typing ch into firefox's location field is enough:-)

I should point out that the same procedure works just fine on my Win PC with MikTeX

on TL / *Nix: no

%&preamble works on TL (and I assume will work on Win/Miktex too)

yeah the no quotation marks version works on both

@ach might be worth raising on the TL list...

@ClickMe The first is wrong: if x>1, the function is positive, so it cant have a negative limit.

@egreg But x approaches 1 from the left so |x-1| must be converted to -(x-1), right?

@ClickMe The second one is correct, in fact.

@ClickMe Of course x-1 is a distraction: the function takes the value 1 for x>1 and –1 for x<1. Just like |x|/x

@egreg The ^- must still be used after converting |x-1| to -(x-1)?

@ClickMe If the liimit exists, the function f(x)=|x| would be differentiable in 0, which it's clearly false.

I want to draw a plane using the Tikz tool. You will find, attached, a screenshot.

@ClickMe You're taking the wrong approach. Saying \lim_{x\to a^-}f(x) simply means that you restrict the domain of f to the numbers in the domain of f that are less than a.

@DavidCarlisle If there is interest. I'll post a CW answer that discourages using TikZ (or PStricks) for extremely technical (and mostly 3D) drawings like this since other tools exist.

@PauloCereda I've used Google Sketchup and it's rich library contained in the 3D Warehouse that has a host of 3D objects, including airplanes.

I would just like to note that the TeX Stack Exchange community is one of the best communities I have encountered on the internet so far and that it is a pleasure and an absolute joy to be a part of it (although I am not talking much, I read Q&As every day). and then you want to make separate chapter files lions.pdf and zebras.pdf

I think it should be possible- don't tell me just yet though, I want to try it first :)

(I have a bash script that does it, but it's a pain when I go onto a Windows machine)

@cmhughes: we could write a rule that creates a temp.tex file containing mainfile.tex, sed the main file to remove all \include's but the one you want and them compile. :)

@PauloCereda that's a little more complicated than I was thinking... :) I was going to make use of the fact that you can call pdflatex with something like pdflatex "\def\myfile{module${i}} \input{mainfile.tex}"

and then in mainfile.tex you have:

% this bit is useful because it helps make modules
\ifdefined\myfile
\includeonly{\myfile}
\else
% include everything !
