I was digging around in PGF and discovered "soft paths". That gave me an idea for an old TikZ question (though in the end I didn't need soft paths, but it's where the idea came from).

@lockstep What's the bet that no one else will answer. But couldn't the problem be solved by just using \parencite for all the citations, or am I missing something?
 
@AlanMunn Part of my redefinitions involve \parencite.
 
@lockstep I see. So there's no simple way to tell \parencite with authoryear to use square brackets instead of parentheses.
