@texenthusiast I couldn't understand it at first too. But that seems to be the gist of the problem. As for the smartdiagram, it looks like a faulty installation. It's working now.

@Karl'sstudents not sure what answer that could have, \lineskip glue is a TeX primitive feature of the way TeX constructs vertical boxes, so clearly it's TeX or Knuth or no-one, depending on how you want to think of it.
@Karl'sstudents No part of the (TeX macro) code, It's at the lowest level of TeX, in its vertical list construction loop. You don't activate it you just put one box above the other and Tex inserts glue unless you trick it into not doing by lying about the depth of the previous box.
@egreg: I'm updating my MacTeX install (it's been a few days since I didn't update it, there are 121 updates!), and I got a few Apple updates as well. By the way, how's your brand new MacBook Pro? :)
@PauloCereda Still to arrive. :( The big number of updates is due to a revision of line endings in a number of files (mostly scripts), that affected many TL-packages, including arara.

@PauloCereda first thing is the positioning of fields like \title and \author I remember there was a question about that but I wasn't able to find it. Should I declare them before or after \begin{document}

@Rico Quite common in my experience. There is a feeling that ragged-right is easier to read for people with dyslexia: same rule means I had to write some stuff in sanserif even though for most of us serif is easier to read

@Rico The "rationale" is that \listoftables adds an entry in the TOC, while \listoftables* doesn't. So PW thought that, for uniformity, also \tableofcontents had to have the same syntax. I vehemently disagree. The same is with the tocbibind package that one has to call with \usepackage[titles,nottoc]{tocbibind}. The first option is in order to avoid that the package takes control of the title typesetting in the TOC-like chapters, the second for not having the TOC in the TOC. :(
It's interesting what Hochuli & Kinross (Designing books - practice and theory) say about tocs: "It may go at the end of the book, but only if the author especially requests this, and only if, as in literary works, the list has no important function of giving the reader an overview of content." What's the point in a contents list if not as a lookup table? Perhaps it's to remind the reader of the chapters they've just read :-P

@Rico Usually this means that you ran BibTeX instead of Biber. The default back end for biblatex is Biber, nowadays, so if you don't add backend=bibtex to the options to biblatex, running BibTeX won't do any good.
@Rico don't know anything about miktex but biber is part of the standard texlive install. Beware the first time you use it it takes ages setting up some kind of index or other (not sure what:-) But @egreg is the expert on all things Windows.
@KannappanSampath Adding fonts for pdfLaTeX is always a pain. But there's a way out: prepare an image from it with XeLaTeX (and standalone) and then use the PDF in place of the symbol.

Compile it with XeLaTeX after installing the font in the system directory. Then in your document define \newcommand\pfsp{\includegraphics{pfsp}}. You may have to scale it.
@egreg I deleted but I suppose it's unlikely that the precis changes fonts much internally so if I hooked into the start of \postchapterprecis while the precis font definitions were still in effect, it could work out? Or I could just leave Gonzalo's box measuring which is more general anyway I suppose.
@egreg yes but would you change font mid-precis? If I did the \prevgraf count and skip at the start of \postchapterprecis rather than after it, it would have the matching baselineskip wouldn't it?

@KannappanSampath \DeclareUnicodeCharacter{00B2}{\texttwosuperior} in the utf8 setup presumably that character is available in the pdf encoding (this is for pdf bookmarks and info fields and other GUI strings; not for typeset material) but think of it as ascii, you can use $\frac{a}{x^2}$ in the tex bit but put a divided by x squared in the ascii version for the pdf string, or whatever you want.
@KannappanSampath It's a restricted character set and has to fit on one line with no formatting so you need a plain text version, hyperref does a reasonable job of automatically stripping out all the formatting but sometimes you need to give it a bit of help.
@DavidCarlisle Right, I figured out these things but, what are the other symbols like \texttwosuperior that I can put in... (looks like you pulled that from the hyperref.sty or sth?)

@KannappanSampath actually I got it from the base latex release utf8enc.dfu but the pd1enc.def file @NicolaTalbot just mentioned is a better place because that lists the characters that are available in the pdf encoding. But normally I find it is the lack of formatting rather than the character set that means you have to supply the pdfstring by hand, eg \mathbb{Z} would come out as Z but you may want it to come out as Integers as an unformatted Z out of context may not be understandable.
@DavidCarlisle OK, this is beginning to make sense (I had thought that \texorpdfstring was to eliminate the warning that hyperref emits, but I think that is something I should live with). But then, how about this: are there cases when hyperref cannot figure out that it can support a symbol on the bookmark and that you'll need to help it out? For instance, it cannot recognise(support) \subseteq but, is there a way I can force hyperref to support this symbol...
I don't know if I am clearly telling you guys my question... I'd like to know what are possible symbols on bookmarks. where is this documented?
@KannappanSampath No, because it's not in the PDF encoding set: the best you can do is provide a 'fall back' (I have to do that for \omega in units, which I turn into [ohm])
@KannappanSampath the character set in bookmarks is fixed so you can't support that symbol as a symbol but you can locally define \subseteq to be subet or equal or something else suitable while writing out pdf strings, so you dont have to use texorpdfstring every time
@KannappanSampath From what I can see, \9041 stands for the block U+2100–U+21FF; \9041\000 is U+2100, while \9041\377 is U+21FF. Thus the second part is octal.

@KannappanSampath In hyperref.dtx there's something: \9 marks the next three digits as higher byte. So \9041\044 means hexadecimal 21 followed by hexadecimal 24.
@KannappanSampath my pdf knowlege is a bit rusty (I read the pdf spec when pdf came out, don't think I have looked since:-) but I think support for a wider character set in bookmarks requires a newish (for some definition of new) version of pdf and is patchy, if I try @egreg's example then I see the Z in acrobat but not in xpdf for example.

I cannot find a way of using \} in a diagram as a node (with its anchors). Is it necessary to use the \mathord environment?
