@DavidCarlisle But we can cancel the \noindent specified in an environment by invoking \par again in the first line of the body, right?

@Karl'sstudents Yes, just another adorable creature. ;-)
@Qrrbrbirlbel Yes, I have. evil grin

@PeterGrill There seems to be a bug in the latest version of smartdiagram 2013/03/09 v0.2. I can't even compile a simple example with it.

I have never used it, so don't know.

@hpesoj626 thanks for answering the Texstudio question. i could not understand it properly
@hpesoj626 i can cross check if you have a sample code to test on linux texlive, ping to ClaudioFiandrino

7:32 AM
@hpesoj626 this smartdiagram code compiles well for me on Ubuntu, TeXLive 12, smartdiagram v0.2, dated 2013/03/09.

@topskip: I wrote something texfragen.de/tex_automatisieren -- However I have no experiences with latexmk

7:51 AM
@texenthusiast I couldn't understand it at first too. But that seems to be the gist of the problem. As for the smartdiagram, it looks like a faulty installation. It's working now.

@hpesoj626 great then :)

A: What makes nodes gradually move down?

Karl's studentsFrom Herbert's answer in the PSTricks' mailing list: which has nothing to do with PSTricks... \rput[tl](1,20){\offinterlineskip\psmatrix\A\\\A\\\A\\\A\\\A\\\endpsmatrix} \documentclass[preview,border=15pt]{standalone} \usepackage{pst-node} \addtopsstyle{gridstyle}{griddots=0} \psset { ...

Please consider the following first:
The left question is: who activates the interlineskip?

@MarcoDaniel awww <3

@Karl'sstudents not sure what answer that could have, \lineskip glue is a TeX primitive feature of the way TeX constructs vertical boxes, so clearly it's TeX or Knuth or no-one, depending on how you want to think of it.

@DavidCarlisle I meant, which part of the code activates the interlineskip?

@Karl'sstudents No part of the (TeX macro) code, It's at the lowest level of TeX, in its vertical list construction loop. You don't activate it you just put one box above the other and Tex inserts glue unless you trick it into not doing by lying about the depth of the previous box.

It's nice to see the users network we have on GitHub - everybody following everybody. :)

@PauloCereda ;-)

@MarcoDaniel It's like a religion! :)
@egreg: I'm updating my MacTeX install (it's been a few days since I didn't update it, there are 121 updates!), and I got a few Apple updates as well. By the way, how's your brand new MacBook Pro? :)

@PauloCereda There were some changing in the TL back-end, so a lot of updates without any actual changes in the package code

@JosephWright Indeed. I was scared to see arara updated! I was like, "Yay, arara is being updated... WAIT WHAT?" :)

@PauloCereda Still to arrive. :( The big number of updates is due to a revision of line endings in a number of files (mostly scripts), that affected many TL-packages, including arara.

10:35 AM
@PauloCereda And our pope is GitHub’s octocat

@egreg Ah I see. Thankfully my deployment is now Unix oriented. :)
@egreg Oh no, I'm very excited to hear about the new machine. :)

@MarcoDaniel great! Thanks - I'll try to write something for latexmk

Why do I receive a call for papers in Japanese?!
I know theory of computation is boring for the average bear, but Japanese... :)

@PauloCereda How do you know it's a call for papers? ;-)

@egreg At least the email subject and the beginning of the body is written in English. :)
@egreg: tell me this is a homage: tex.stackexchange.com/a/102870/3094 Two of my machines names are listed here. :)

10:48 AM
@PauloCereda People I know. :)
I wanted to list also Gauß, but with Göttingen it would require input encoding woes.

@egreg :) Tell me about it, my songbook drove me crazy with accents. :)

@PauloCereda I never have any problems with the dot over i, I can't see what all the fuss is about.

@DavidCarlisle ooh! :)

@PauloCereda Just add \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} and then
\index[names]{Gauss@Gauß}
\index[places]{Goettingen@Göttingen}
MakeIndex is not very good at sorting strange characters

@egreg Ah yes, that's the trick I've been using so far. :)
Maybe it's time to give xindy a try.

It is a pity that \vphantom (\ignorespacesafterend) has no semantic spouse that should be \hphantom (\ignorespacesbeforestart).
They might be jealous of the marriage of \hbox and \vbox.

1:26 PM
heeeey guys =)

@Rico Hello! Long time no see. :)
@JosephWright: How about we create an automated system for L3 prefixes? :)

@PauloCereda yeah :( had a lot to do, did you miss me ;)

@Rico We all did, except of course @DavidCarlisle, he's mean to everybody who doesn't use emacs. :)

@PauloCereda :D
@DavidCarlisle is actually a quite nice person ;)
@PauloCereda I'm creating a template for my girlfriends bachelor theses and there are some things that bothers me maybe you could help me with this ;) if you have nothing better to do ofcourse

@Rico Fire away. :)

1:32 PM
@PauloCereda first thing is the positioning of fields like \title and \author I remember there was a question about that but I wasn't able to find it. Should I declare them before or after \begin{document}
@PauloCereda I just found the question ;)

@Rico I think it's up to your style. :) Personally, I like to define them in the preamble. :)
As long as you define them before \maketitle, everything will be ok.
@JosephWright: "spice up things in the LaTeX3 world" is in my TODO list. :)

@PauloCereda same here =) I prefer this, too
@PauloCereda second thing is, they have to use "Times New Roman" by default. (with 1.5 linespread ... ). By default I'm using lmodern which should be totally fine. What do you think about that?

Do you want a sneak preview of the new version of "Using LaTeX to Write a PhD Thesis"? I've got the online versions ready but I'm not going to announce them until the paperback's sorted. I haven't put the links in on the book's main page, but the files are now all there.

@NicolaTalbot Of course we do :-)

@Rico I think so. :) In any case, you can also go with TeX Gyre Termes - \usepackage{tgtermes}
@NicolaTalbot ooh yes! :)

1:40 PM
@PauloCereda never heard of this. Is this some sort of font?

@Rico Free clone of Times, much improved over existing ones

@Rico It is. TeX Gyre has several font families. :)

@JosephWright :-) okay, there's the HTML version, A4 PDF and screen PDF

@PauloCereda nice, question is does it work with well with microtype and UTF8

1:41 PM
@Rico XeTeX?

@JosephWright thank you, I'll definitely read that.
@PauloCereda yeah not sure if I really want to try XeTeX for my girlfriend

Wow, 40 years of DSOTM!
I need to celebrate. Volume up.
It should be a holiday in the UK.

@PauloCereda I remember when the album came out ... (no! I am not that old :))

@topskip ooh! :)
I remember that Wizard of Oz thingy. :)
After the third roar of the MGM lion, play the album. :)
Conspiration theory of course. But I do have the movie just for educational purposes. :)

@PauloCereda fancyhdr or fancyheadings?! ;)

1:49 PM
Heavens, neither of them. :)

@Rico The former; the latter has been obsolete for many years.

@Rico If you're using koma, scrpage2 is best.

@PauloCereda not? what should I use instead?

I'm not good with headers, maybe others can give you a better insight. :)
Just don't use fncychap, or @egreg will rip your spine out.

@NicolaTalbot I'm using KOMA, I'll have a look at scrpage2

1:51 PM
@NicolaTalbot I've been trying KOMA for some time. To be honest, I'm very impressed with the quality.
I just think some topics are quite difficult to find in the manual.

@PauloCereda Yes, it's very good. I like it for technical documents.
@Rico I've got a brief introduction to scrpage2 at dickimaw-books.com/latex/thesis/html/newpagestyle.html

@KannappanSampath Hello :-)

@KannappanSampath Aloha!

I have a font question! So, I thought I'll ask here.

1:52 PM
Don't use Comic Sans.

@NicolaTalbot thank you but I use the original documentation for it's in german ;)

@PauloCereda That's always the problem with a big manual.

Yes, I most certainly won't! :)

@Rico :-)

@NicolaTalbot Indeed! :) I was supposed to add at least 3 more chapters to the arara one. :P

1:53 PM
@PauloCereda everytime someone uses Comic Sans god kills a kitten...

@KannappanSampath Atta boy! :)
@Rico Oh no!

@NicolaTalbot arara section is good :-)

I am looking for a P that looks like \wp but without the top protrusion...

@JosephWright Thanks :-)

@JosephWright Indeed, I think @Nicola knows more about my tool than I do. :)

1:54 PM
@PauloCereda lol :-)

@JosephWright: expect a L3-related mail later on today. :)

If anyone finds any errors in the book, they'll have to be considered features :-P

Oh my god!!! I just read the "rules" of formatting for those papers and it says "automatic hyphenation should be turned of" what the hell is that?

Aha! Cardinal Hummes (a Franciscan) gave Cardinal Bergoglio a hint on his name. :)
@Rico You are kidding. You have to be kidding. You gotta be kidding. Please tell me you are kidding.

@PauloCereda Absolutely not it becomes much better, just give me a second and I'll translate the whole formatting rules...

1:59 PM
@Rico Quite common in my experience. There is a feeling that ragged-right is easier to read for people with dyslexia: same rule means I had to write some stuff in sanserif even though for most of us serif is easier to read

@Rico Oh my, this sounds like Vincent Price reading tales from the crypt.

@JosephWright That's the way I've always had to format writing extracts for critiquing.

@PauloCereda the font has to be Times New Roman, Fontsize has to be 12pt, linespread 1,5 with "Blocksatz"

@JosephWright Speaking of which, I have two versions of my songbook in my iPad, and the sanserif seems to be the easiest to read on screen. :)

@PauloCereda On screen can be different

2:01 PM
@Rico mathptmx and setspace packages. Don't know what blocksatz is.

@JosephWright My thoughts exactly.
On print, serif all the way.

@PauloCereda Like this?

@NicolaTalbot "Blocksatz" is (hyphenless) justification

@Rico Okay, so that's just \raggedright unless they want ugly great white areas of space in the paragraphs.

@cgnieder Oh my!

2:05 PM
@NicolaTalbot thats the point it not raggedright not sure if I understand that right but raggedright looks like flushleft for me. They want those ugly whitespaces...

@egreg Would you have suggestions for a P that looks like \wp but without top protrusions...

@Rico Argh! They've been infected by bad word processors.
@Rico You could try \pretolerance=10000

@NicolaTalbot its absolutely insane and not readable!
@NicolaTalbot no :D I'll do it the right way!!

@Rico Yay :-)

@NicolaTalbot how could I explain the awesomeness of LaTeX to my girlfriend by turning of all its great features. Thats just wrong!

2:11 PM
@KannappanSampath Hmm, what for?

@egreg Apparently for a subset of the spec(R)...
(Not for me, but someone asked me...)
From google fonts, I have some contenders, I plan to show them...

@KannappanSampath Fraktur is often used: \mathfrak{p}

@egreg I know but they did not like it (or want it)... Some 80's paper (so, perhaps typeset by blocks Or sth) had this...
Petit Formal Script!!!

@KannappanSampath Not available in TeX Live

2:47 PM
is it possible to add the heading "Abstract" to the abstract?

What is the difference between
and
?
The latter should be removed I think. :D

@Rico Use koma class option abstract

@NicolaTalbot thank you just found that =) now I have to change it from "Zusammenfassung" to "Abstract" ;)
@PauloCereda here is another "great" this about the specifications of the paper: it should include the abstract and the tableof contentes in the table of contents^^
@PauloCereda I'm sorry for what I'm saying now but What idiot wants to display the page of the table of contents in the table of contents?

3:08 PM
\documentclass{scrreprt}

\begin{document}

\clearpage
\addtocontents{toc}{%
  \protect\contentsline{chapter}{Table of Contents}{Go Figure!}}
\tableofcontents

\chapter{Sample Chapter}

\end{document}

@NicolaTalbot \addcontentsline{toc}{section}{Table of Contents}

@Rico Yeah, I was just being silly and wanted to replace the page number.

@NicolaTalbot ;)
@NicolaTalbot but why would someone add the TOC to the TOC? :D

@Rico Yeah, it doesn't make much sense unless you want it added to the pdf bookmarks. That can be useful, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

@NicolaTalbot the paper has to be printed, no bookmarks needed

3:15 PM
@Rico Ask the author of memoir: in order to remove the TOC from the TOC one has to type \tableofcontents*.
@Rico It's the problem of inventories: should the inventory go in the inventory? ;-)

@egreg the only thing that pops in my mind hearing that is " W H Y ? "
@egreg did you mean recursion? :D

@Rico The "rationale" is that \listoftables adds an entry in the TOC, while \listoftables* doesn't. So PW thought that, for uniformity, also \tableofcontents had to have the same syntax. I vehemently disagree. The same is with the tocbibind package that one has to call with \usepackage[titles,nottoc]{tocbibind}. The first option is in order to avoid that the package takes control of the title typesetting in the TOC-like chapters, the second for not having the TOC in the TOC. :(

@egreg absolutely!
I found another great thing about the paper, it can have up to 5 levels of toc like: 3.7.11.1.1

@PauloCereda but everybody uses emacs, so that's OK.

@Rico If you use book, up to six. Don't do it. However, an answer of mine shows how you can go up to 100 (and more, if you like).

3:27 PM
It's interesting what Hochuli & Kinross (Designing books - practice and theory) say about tocs: "It may go at the end of the book, but only if the author especially requests this, and only if, as in literary works, the list has no important function of giving the reader an overview of content." What's the point in a contents list if not as a lookup table? Perhaps it's to remind the reader of the chapters they've just read :-P

@egreg why would I use 6 levels of toc in a document of 15 pages?
anyone got experience with "Apa 5" Citing?

@Rico Why five? It would be more of a phone directory than a paper.

@egreg Don't know I wouldn't got deeper than 3

@Rico In a 15 page document two is usually more than sufficient. But it depends on the document, of course.

@egreg absolutely! but its actually not my problem. I'm on the APA Citation now. Hope this works well.

damn you bibtex for not supporting utf8 right -.-

@Rico you do realise that utf8 is 10 years younger than bibtex:-)

@DavidCarlisle sure ;)
@DavidCarlisle you are also older than utf8 and able to use it ;)

@Rico Try biblatex. Although I think there is actually a newer bibtex that supports utf8, but I can't remember what it's called.

@Rico well like bibtex I use it without problem in the range where it's the same as ascii:-)

3:55 PM
@NicolaTalbot bibtexu, but it's mainly unsupported.

now I need to teach texstudio how to use biblatex -.-

4:28 PM
Is there a trick to bring the fp's manual (written in a plain text) up with texdoc?

I need some help with biblatex =(

@Karl'sstudents texdoc fp gives the README file, I'm afraid it's the only documentation available.

I think this is a NARQ and waits for 3 more votes

Q: Math \} as a node inside tikzpicture

RicardoI cannot find a way of using \} in a diagram as a node (with its anchors). Is it necessary to use the \mathord environment?

@egreg But the output is not completely rendered as follows,

@Karl'sstudents Hit the space bar

4:35 PM
@egreg OK. Thanks for answering.

@egreg my guru, you've got a second for me?

@Rico If it's biblatex, then ask someone else. ;-)

@egreg =(

@Rico But you can try nonetheless.

@egreg i truly dont understand the Problem it tells me that there is an empty biblography

4:46 PM
@Rico Usually this means that you ran BibTeX instead of Biber. The default back end for biblatex is Biber, nowadays, so if you don't add backend=bibtex to the options to biblatex, running BibTeX won't do any good.

@egreg it looks like the problem is that my computer does not know to path to biber -.-

@Rico What TeX distribution are you using?

@egreg miktex

@Rico Oh. :( Then I guess you need Perl, but I'm no expert.

@egreg PERL?! what a scary thing!!!

4:52 PM
@Rico don't know anything about miktex but biber is part of the standard texlive install. Beware the first time you use it it takes ages setting up some kind of index or other (not sure what:-) But @egreg is the expert on all things Windows.

@Rico Not sure about that.

@Rico biber is written in perl but in its texlive version at least they compile in a perl stub so you don't need a separate perl installation.
@Rico I guess you need

@DavidCarlisle it works now ^^
still not perfect though but it works

5:09 PM
@egreg How can I use that in TeXlive then? I think I have to use XeTeX...

@KannappanSampath Adding fonts for pdfLaTeX is always a pain. But there's a way out: prepare an image from it with XeLaTeX (and standalone) and then use the PDF in place of the symbol.

@egreg OK, I'll digest what that means and ask you when I get stuck... :)

Prepare this pfsp.tex file:
\documentclass{standalone}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Petit Formal Script} % adjust this
\begin{document}
p
\end{document}
Compile it with XeLaTeX after installing the font in the system directory. Then in your document define \newcommand\pfsp{\includegraphics{pfsp}}. You may have to scale it.

5:52 PM
@egreg I deleted but I suppose it's unlikely that the precis changes fonts much internally so if I hooked into the start of \postchapterprecis while the precis font definitions were still in effect, it could work out? Or I could just leave Gonzalo's box measuring which is more general anyway I suppose.

1 hour later…
7:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle If I had to make a precis, I'd use smaller type. :)

7:22 PM
@egreg yes but would you change font mid-precis? If I did the \prevgraf count and skip at the start of \postchapterprecis rather than after it, it would have the matching baselineskip wouldn't it?

Hi everyone. I'd like you to read the acknowledgement of my dissertation. Especially @DavidCarlisle, @egreg, @StefanKottwitz, @lockstep. How can I do that? It's a pdf.
ok done.

7:43 PM
@LoverofStructure In many documents, if you choose "select all with similar formatting", quite often some text is not selected, because the size differs by 0.5pt or something like that

8:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, provided \postchapterprecis doesn't do anything more than ending a paragraph and possibly closing the group.
@Costi In bocca al lupo per la discussione!

@egreg Hmm... Thank you... I have been distracted so much I forgot to even see this screen... :)

8:48 PM
Does someone know where should one look for information about PDFDocEncoding?

@KannappanSampath PDF Reference?

@KannappanSampath PDF Reference?

9:03 PM
@JosephWright Hmm, I am quite convinced, I have it right!
I was trying to get math bookmarks, hence my question.
I am now stuck! I would like to write subseteq in the bookmark... and I know its name (reflexsubset) but I am not sure how to use this (or its PDFcode)... Any pointers?

9:33 PM
Hello! Would someone please edit the link in this community ad to ctan.org/pkg/bidi ? I would do it myself, but I have got some past experience with the user...

@Costi Use the command \LaTeX instead of LaTeX ;-)

@percusse And type \LaTeX{} if a space should follow.

@egreg Why spoil the fun?
@tohecz Done
@tohecz You are obsessed with that aren't you?
:)

@percusse why do you think so? :D

@tohecz Well it keeps coming back.

9:39 PM
This could be closed (a simple update solved the problem):

Q: bottomrule option not working in beamer tcolorbox

dcmstI'd like to use the bottomrule option for the tcolorbox environment, as shown in the tcolorbox manual on page 12. Unfortunately, the option does not seem to work, and the following code creates a standard tcolorbox instead of a bottomruled tcolorbox. \documentclass{beamer} \usepackage{tikz} \us...

@GonzaloMedina I added a picture of the correct output

Hmm... can someone give me more examples of PDF strings in:

\texorpdfstring{<TEX-String>}{<PDF-String}

9:54 PM
@percusse Sometimes the SO/SE is inflexible: a user points out that a link goes 404, other 2 users upvotes it, but a week later nothing's happened. This is the case with many feature-requests etc.

@egreg yes I think I'll leave it deleted any particular case is easy but making it general for any definition of the precis formatting would be a bit of a pain
@KannappanSampath what kind of example?

@DavidCarlisle In the hyperref manual, there is an example: TeX String: $a^2 + b^2$ and PDf String: a\texttwosuperior\ + b\texttwosuperior but I am not sure where does \texttwosuperior comes from or how to cook more such examples that are not isomorphic (or homeomorphic)...
So, I was hoping to see someone come up with some non-trivial example, that explains the whole thing..

@KannappanSampath There are only limited characters available to you in PDF bookmarks, so it will depend if what you want is even doable

@JosephWright Hmm, quite! But, the whole point is I want to learn this stuff... so, I don't want to do anything... but, just some examples of what is possible and what is not...
@JosephWright How many characters anyway?

@KannappanSampath You might want to have a look at pd1enc.def

10:09 PM
@KannappanSampath \DeclareUnicodeCharacter{00B2}{\texttwosuperior} in the utf8 setup presumably that character is available in the pdf encoding (this is for pdf bookmarks and info fields and other GUI strings; not for typeset material) but think of it as ascii, you can use $\frac{a}{x^2}$ in the tex bit but put a divided by x squared in the ascii version for the pdf string, or whatever you want.
@KannappanSampath It's a restricted character set and has to fit on one line with no formatting so you need a plain text version, hyperref does a reasonable job of automatically stripping out all the formatting but sometimes you need to give it a bit of help.

@DavidCarlisle Right, I figured out these things but, what are the other symbols like \texttwosuperior that I can put in... (looks like you pulled that from the hyperref.sty or sth?)
@NicolaTalbot OK! Thanks for the pointer! Looks this is where @David pulled that one!

@KannappanSampath actually I got it from the base latex release utf8enc.dfu but the pd1enc.def file @NicolaTalbot just mentioned is a better place because that lists the characters that are available in the pdf encoding. But normally I find it is the lack of formatting rather than the character set that means you have to supply the pdfstring by hand, eg \mathbb{Z} would come out as Z but you may want it to come out as Integers as an unformatted Z out of context may not be understandable.

@DavidCarlisle True: I have some fun inside siunitx to cover something equally tricky

@DavidCarlisle OK, this is beginning to make sense (I had thought that \texorpdfstring was to eliminate the warning that hyperref emits, but I think that is something I should live with). But then, how about this: are there cases when hyperref cannot figure out that it can support a symbol on the bookmark and that you'll need to help it out? For instance, it cannot recognise(support) \subseteq but, is there a way I can force hyperref to support this symbol...
I don't know if I am clearly telling you guys my question... I'd like to know what are possible symbols on bookmarks. where is this documented?

10:25 PM
@KannappanSampath No, because it's not in the PDF encoding set: the best you can do is provide a 'fall back' (I have to do that for \omega in units, which I turn into [ohm])

@KannappanSampath the character set in bookmarks is fixed so you can't support that symbol as a symbol but you can locally define \subseteq to be subet or equal or something else suitable while writing out pdf strings, so you dont have to use texorpdfstring every time

@DavidCarlisle Okay! Well, still, my question stays: what are those symbols that are supported

@KannappanSampath the ones in the .def file Nicola mentioned

@DavidCarlisle I see, great!
@JosephWright Oh! It makes sense now!
Please put up with my newbie questions: texdoc.net/texmf-dist/tex/latex/hyperref/psdextra.def -- what about this one?

10:41 PM
@JosephWright woohoo!! Thank you!
I understand this now fully!!
All of this together with Nicola's def are the only ones that work: texdoc.net/texmf-dist/tex/latex/hyperref/puenc.def

I am orphan at the young age and raised by a positive integer. :D

@KannappanSampath Try this one:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\usepackage[unicode]{hyperref}
\usepackage{bookmark}

\DeclareTextCommand{\BbbZ}{PU}{\9041\044}% U+2124

\begin{document}
\section{The integers \texorpdfstring{$\mathbb{Z}$}{\BbbZ}}
\end{document}
Maybe @DavidCarlisle can explain what \9041\044 stands for. I found something in puenc.def

@egreg This example proves me wrong!! :)

@KannappanSampath They are those Heiko defined.

@egreg Exactly!

@KannappanSampath You can define other ones, as you've seen.

They serve as prototypes! Well, I was intrigued to read that hyperref is like 30% of LaTeX (According to Fair Robin on c.t.t.tex)
@egreg True! But, as you point out, it would be nice to know how to come up with those \9041\044.

11:53 PM
@KannappanSampath From what I can see, \9041 stands for the block U+2100U+21FF; \9041\000 is U+2100, while \9041\377 is U+21FF. Thus the second part is octal.

@egreg Oh! Fantastic! So, any unicode can go in Bookmarks!

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo, are you around? :)

@cmhughes Sir yes sir!
:)

@PauloCereda lol ;) I've been working feverishly on indent.plx- would you mind if I asked you a question about updating paths? or would you prefer I asked on the main site- I don't mind which :)

@cmhughes Fire away! :)

11:58 PM
@PauloCereda ok... I remember reading in the arara documentation that the paths were update automatically- was that done by arara, or do the texlive maintainers take care of it?

@KannappanSampath In hyperref.dtx there's something: \9 marks the next three digits as higher byte. So \9041\044 means hexadecimal 21 followed by hexadecimal 24.

@KannappanSampath my pdf knowlege is a bit rusty (I read the pdf spec when pdf came out, don't think I have looked since:-) but I think support for a wider character set in bookmarks requires a newish (for some definition of new) version of pdf and is patchy, if I try @egreg's example then I see the Z in acrobat but not in xpdf for example.

I was theoretically assuming that the generalisations worked! :(
I'll compile the code now.
