@AlanMunn ah ok i see it's pist in english. In german we actually use the french "planche". till the morrow

12:31 AM
@DavidCarlisle It's LPPL, so you can fork it for the new version of longtable. ;-)

@egreg so who's going to get the spaces in filenames tick?

@DavidCarlisle Of course my solution is more general. :P

@egreg I suppose I could edit mine not to require " but I thought it would interfere with the elegant simplicity of the code:-)

@DavidCarlisle That guy wants to process file names with complete UTF-8 support and spaces in them. :(

@egreg we should force him to use msdos 8+3 ascii names

12:36 AM
@DavidCarlisle Next will be file names in Chinese.
Good night all!

@egreg night (I updated the files with spaces to cope with filenames without spaces:-)

@HarishKumar Hi
@HarishKumar Sorry was out for a while

3:07 AM
@texenthusiast Hi. Sorry for deleting that message. It was in a hurry. My son woke up. It was early morning for us. :-)
It happens. We will be on and off. But still we will be there on this site :-)

@HarishKumar Same here, I was busy with house helping

@texenthusiast :-) Are you a student? I couldn't read your last message. Which subject?

@HarishKumar really a fan of yours and style (red Border) answers
@HarishKumar your certificate was my first love

@texenthusiast Thank you. That certificate has seen many evolutions now. What is there on this site is obsolete!
I changed the color of border recently :-)

@HarishKumar git it up
@HarishKumar meet cvr any tim

@texenthusiast The code is a mess at present. I will clean it up and upload very soon. When I do I will ping you :-)

@HarishKumar very inspr ,live life that way to give life to others

@texenthusiast True. When we feel desperate in life we should look at such people and get courage.
@texenthusiast I think I have to leave for some time. Nice chatting with you. Be back in a while Bye

@HarishKumar talk later may be , gotta go
@HarishKumar nice chat

Q: what is the correct way to check for latex, pdflatex and html in the same latex document?

NasserWhat is the correct way to check for if one is running in pdflatex vs latex vs. an html processor such as tex4ht? Suppose I have some latex code that I only want to show up in html, and not show up in pdf and not show up in .ps. Since tex4ht works in latex mode, then if I try this: \ifpdf % ...

The OP seems to think he has to load tex4tht to use \@ifpackageloaded{tex4ht}, or do I miss something?

9:41 AM
how do i shorten links in comments? with <a href=...> </a> ?

@Timebandit put the link text in [ ] followed by the URL in ( ) ^^^

@DavidCarlisle Yes, like this! Nice! Thank you =) looks much better =)

or any other IDE ;)

@Timebandit There is no other

for mac or in general?

@Timebandit no, at all, according to @David

@tohecz :D explains a lot ;)

10:34 AM
@Timebandit if you asked me, I prefer vim, but I'm not that kind of person to say one or the other is better.

@tohecz vim is quite nice but i only use it for javascript or node.js, at the moment i prefer the texmaker

@tohecz My main problem with vim is that the only vi command I know is :wq and I've used emacs virtually every day since 1987 so most things seem rather more natural in emacs.

@Timebandit I use vim for c++, for LaTeX be it TeXworks

11:24 AM
@DavidCarlisle Same here ^^ vim is very complicated to learn for new users
@tohecz TeXworks is fine to, not sure why but i prefer IDE's like TeXmaker or Eclipse

12:00 PM
@DavidCarlisle See? The OP preferred the more elaborate code and not the vastly more elegant code of yours. :)

12:21 PM
@egreg David will avenge the points he lost by writing more TikZ answers. :)

This is also called "shooting one's own foot":

Q: Savebox and usebox unexpected behaviour for the box with index 10

drastoI have found that when saving and later using boxes the box with index 10 behaves differently to all other. Here is simple demo that shows different behaviour. In preamble I define this commands: \usepackage{forloop} \newcounter{BoxCount} \newcommand{\numberedBox}[1]{% \stepcounter{BoxCount}...

@egreg We need a tag. :)

12:41 PM
@egreg What do you expect from people using filenames with spaces.
@PauloCereda I hope you were impressed by my tikz use here tex.stackexchange.com/questions/93869/…

@DavidCarlisle Yes! :) I upvoted it in the morning. :)

@PauloCereda thanks:-)

@egreg Will you add a demo using \newsavebox, etc. on the box question or should I?

@JosephWright Just let me have lunch

@egreg OK: same here!

1:00 PM
@egreg oh good time to nip in with a more complete answer... (or should I have lunch as well)

@DavidCarlisle Done. :)

@egreg ah well having lunch anyway

1:16 PM
!!/eightball should David have his lunch?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: don't count on it.

@DavidCarlisle Here's the \AND in the more economic way:
\usepackage{xparse}
\NewDocumentCommand{\AND}{sO{}mm}
 {\IfBooleanTF{#1}
    {\left(#3\wedge#4\right)}
    {\mathopen{#2(}#3\wedge#4\mathclose{#2)}}}

$\AND{a}{b} \AND[\big]{a}{b} \AND*{a}{b}$
I'd prefer the OP use \wedge for \AND and not \vee. ;-)

Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode: Let's take a look at the last fencing results:

- Oh dear, nothing happened so far.

Our fencing expert Alan might explain these results later on.

@DavidCarlisle If you want to see \AND in action, look at tex.stackexchange.com/questions/89310/… which doesn't really seem a "real world example". :)

@egreg I'd have probably had an \ifx\@empty or two rather than sO{}mm but it's same thing really:-)

!!/eightball Should we use xparse?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: as I see it, yes.

1:26 PM
@Paulo Hello! the presentation is prepared, it's on the way ;)

@tohecz Yay! :)

@tohecz Wow! Very nice! :)

@tohecz Hi :-) My laptop is feeling poorly. It needs to wrap itself up warm and go to bed.

Yay @Nicola is here! :)

1:30 PM
@PauloCereda :-) Yeah, I'm back on line :-)
My laptop switched itself off while I was in the middle of trying to bundle up datatool for upload to CTAN.
I'm overtaxing it :-(

@NicolaTalbot I hope that the suggestion for fmtcount works

@tohecz I've put it in my TODO file :-)

@NicolaTalbot ok :)
@PauloCereda I esp. like pages 15-38 ;)

@tohecz I'd really like to rewrite fmtcount but it would take a lot of time and effort.
datetime could also do with a rewrite.

@NicolaTalbot Try pouring brandy into it

1:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle :D

@DavidCarlisle :-)
I think it was a thermal cutout. The fan's probably clogged.

@NicolaTalbot :(

Luckily I don't think I lost anything. It was just running pdflatex. I've just done my main and auxiliary backups :-)

!!/eightball Do you make backups?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: without a doubt.
Ah.
!!/eightball Do you prefer xelatex instead of pdflatex?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: it is certain.

@tohecz Really nice, but there should be an italic correction before $\mathbb{C}$ on slide 39 :-)

1:44 PM
@PauloCereda Very sensible :-)
Oh drat. I was just about to upload datatool when I noticed another bug report :-(

@NicolaTalbot :)
@NicolaTalbot Oh no!
!!/eightball Should Nicola fix the bug?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: outlook good.

Hey guys! Is there a LaTeX command to say: "The enclosed code should be on one page" (some kind of environment, I guess)?
\begin{do-not-split-this} my code here that should all appear on one page \end{do-not-split-this}

@MartyIX Put the code inside a float?

I'll check what it is. Thanks

@MartyIX Perhaps put it in a box (\vbox or \parbox or \begin{minipage})

1:53 PM
@MartyIX You are looking for the listings package: ctan.org/pkg/listings

@NicolaTalbot Thanks, I'll try.

!!/eightball Are you hungry?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: outlook not so good.

@tohecz I don't actually need it for code listing. But thank you

@StephanLehmke yeah it should, but I don't want to risk plugging the USB stick into my computer again :D

@tohecz Let's consult the oracle. :)
!!/eightball Should Tom correct slide 39?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: yes. Beware, Alan might stab you.
o.O

1:55 PM
!!/eightball What should i eat for lunch?

@Timebandit Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: most likely.

@Timebandit Doesn't work this way, 8-ball replies to yes-no questions ;)

@Timebandit eightball is more of a yes/no query. :)

ok retry! :D

Psmith exists for the sole purpose of providing info of TeX.sx's favourite sport. :)

@JosephWright Definitely, need to learn more English abbreviations.

@Timebandit :)
@JosephWright: I could add a list of acronyms to Psmith, so we can easily consult them. :)

@PauloCereda is there any key to answer any post or do i have to click this small arrow?

Thoughts welcome on the question of on/off topic here

5:05 PM
sorry never used it

5:19 PM
@JosephWright It's a tricky case. To the extent that pandoc counts as a TeX related tool, this particular question might be on topic. OTOH if most pandoc users are using it for other types of conversion there might be a larger user base on StackOverflow or elsewhere, but I don't know.

@AlanMunn Possibly, but that is not a TeX problem per se (the same would be true if he were trying to use say convert to deal with a TIFF image and tried to run the program without a command-line argument).
@AlanMunn There is an example for a .tex file on the Pandoc help page:

@JosephWright I was just thinking out loud, don't worry. :)

@AlanMunn As I said in a comment, a meta question might be appropriate
@PauloCereda :-)
@PauloCereda Everyone should use Debian or Slackware instead?
Or perhaps something like OpenBSD

@JosephWright Yes. :)
GUI for me was only through startx. :)

@PauloCereda As I said before, I tried to install Debian once: I will not be trying that again

@JosephWright Slackware is a nice option, but it's too spartan for the majority of people. :)
Gotta love shutting down my machine with /sbin/shutdown -h now

@PauloCereda What about a computer which didn't have any GUI? Like a Vax/VMS some years ago. ;-)

@JosephWright Yes, you're right. I think more and more Mac users have some experience with using Terminal, though. There's lots of stuff on the regular Mac sites that use it, more so than for Windows, I think.

And the TeX previewer was dvitty. :)
