What is the correct way to check for if one is running in pdflatex vs latex vs. an html processor such as tex4ht?
Suppose I have some latex code that I only want to show up in html, and not show up in pdf and not show up in .ps.
Since tex4ht works in latex mode, then if I try this:
\ifpdf
% ...

I have found that when saving and later using boxes the box with index 10 behaves differently to all other.
Here is simple demo that shows different behaviour. In preamble I define this commands:

@JosephWright It's a tricky case. To the extent that pandoc counts as a TeX related tool, this particular question might be on topic. OTOH if most pandoc users are using it for other types of conversion there might be a larger user base on StackOverflow or elsewhere, but I don't know.
@AlanMunn The problem for me is that the tool is simply being misused: like TeX, it's command line but the questionner seems to be expecting some form of GUI
@JosephWright Well that doesn't make it a bad question, just a seriously misguided user :) It seems like it might be helpful to the user to just add an answer that says "Here's how you convert a simple TeX document using pandoc. (Not having used it, it's not going to be me, though.)

Psmith, the TeX bot: Internal count register? far too scary for me, it even has an sign in its name Replace database by editor, Postgres by emacs and we have David.
@AlanMunn Possibly, but that is not a TeX problem per se (the same would be true if he were trying to use say convert to deal with a TIFF image and tried to run the program without a command-line argument).
