12:02 AM
Why now I have a ticker cursor?

@leo Because you're using Windoze. :P

leo
@egreg I mean thicker cursor :-P
@egreg I'm using Texmaker. Just noticed I hit Ctrl many times and some other mysterious keys and then the cursor become fat

@leo I believe that Windoze selects randomly how to punish its users with some unexpected behavior.

leo
@egreg ha ha :D

@leo Once I was doing a presentation on a Windows computer; just advancing with the arrow, not more. I hit a key by mistake and the image on the screen went upside down.

12:10 AM
@leo With emacs that happens when you press Insrt and it goes to overwrite mode.

leo
@StephanLehmke that's exactly what is happen right now

Just watched Mary Poppins - thanks @PauloCereda :-)

leo
@egreg What have you done then?
@StephanLehmke how it returns to normal mode

@leo Just press Insrt again.

@leo I hit some keys at random and eventually the image rotated with the left upwards. Some other keys and it returned normal.

leo
12:13 AM
@StephanLehmke Indeed it works :-)
@egreg the presentations was a TeX one?

@leo Are there of different type?
Actually it was math, but prepared with beamer

leo
@egreg good point

leo
12:25 AM
what do I need in order to run perl script?
like this one?

@leo perl
@leo I use cygwin perl but stackoverflow.com/questions/71513/…

leo
@DavidCarlisle but I do not have perl and sometimes I compile with Latexmk and it works

@leo according to ctan's latexmk readme it ships with perl on windows:
3) Portability under non-UNIX systems:
Under other operating systems some other arrangement needs to be made
to run the file. For example under MS-Windows, the supplied batch file
latexmk.bat will do this. Under current TeXLive (2009 or later)
distribution, latexmk can be installed by TeXLive's package
manager, in which case an executable program is also installed to
run latexmk.pl, and an appropriate version of Perl is part of the
TeXLive system.
@leo but I have no idea if that is a cut down perl distrib with just enough to run latexmk. You should install perl (hard to imagine a machine without it:-)

leo
@DavidCarlisle so have TeXLive \implies have perl

12:41 AM
@leo as I say I have no idea how full a distribution it is. Like most languages it is the installed libraries that make the difference, the language runtime is only a small part of the picture.

leo
@DavidCarlisle oh, I see
thanks

Trying to recompile the chart in the meta lottery but I'm getting an error:
    ./lotteryplot.tex:204: Package PGF Math Error: Digit `9' invalid for base 8 (in
 '19+15/24+09/(24*60)-24').

@AlanMunn I assume you have a spurious ' before the digit (like the one you show:-) In teX primitive number syntax '19 is 19 base 8 oops

@DavidCarlisle I searched for all the 9s and found nothing odd about them. And there is not a single ' in the document.

@AlanMunn where did the expression you posted above come from?

12:55 AM
It's from the macro that transforms the time into something plottable.

\def\transformtime#1-#2-#3 #4:#5!{
\pgfkeys{/pgf/fpu=true,/pgf/fpu/output format=fixed}
\pgfmathparse{#3+#4/24+#5/(24*60)-24}
\pgfkeys{/pgf/fpu=false}
}

@AlanMunn You need to change the entry without the zero, I mean 2012-12-19 15:9, 143
the prefix zero in 09 is the offending one. I'll edit
or would you like to complete it yourself?

Oh it's not a tex octal it's a pgf one
! Package PGF Math Error: Digit `9' invalid for base 8 (in '1+09').
\pgfmathparse{1+09}

@percusse Got it. I was trying to add my second number to the list. But as with the last time I've crossed the date line and the limits of the axes need to be changed too.

stupid C convention numbers beginning with 0 are presumably octal

Yep 09/(24*60) is causing problems without a pair of brace I guess.

1:06 AM
Ok. Plot updated now. It's complicated to figure out the numbers when people like me edit our original choices rather than add a new number...

@AlanMunn changing choices should be banned :-) coincidentally meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/2982/…

@DavidCarlisle I didn't change; The rules were changed midway to allow two choices. I think you need to add a second choice too, say, -23 or something.
Cute comment, BTW.

@AlanMunn The new rules say you can make two valid guesses, so I was confused about how many invalid guesses I was allowed

1:23 AM
@DavidCarlisle ∞

Oh, when I came in, who did I see? Thanks @GarbageCollector for the offered bounty some days ago!

2:14 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ok have confirmed that the updated test case has the problem: excess vertical space at top. You'll see that the unfixed and fixed are now side by side and the fixed version is taller.

2 hours later…
3:56 AM
@Speravir No problem. Thanks.

5 hours later…
9:13 AM
Anyone ever heard of the pseudo-language allhyph?
From truncate.sty I'm getting the error message
ERROR: Package truncate Error: Hyphenation patterns for `allhyph' not loaded.
and in the code I find
% Yes, eagle-eyed reader, there is a third option "[breakall]" that allows
% breaks anywhere. It requires that you use a LaTeX format with hyphenation
% patterns for the pseudo-language `allhyph' preloaded.
%
%
\ProvidesPackage{truncate}[2000/01/28 \space ver 3.0]
%
\DeclareOption{breakall}{\@TruncLC % execute breakwords option
   \@ifundefined{l@allhyph}{\PackageError{truncate}%
      {Hyphenation patterns for `allhyph' not loaded}%
       {To allow breaks at every letter you must build a LaTeX format
But Alas! I searched the mentioned documentation, all the files language.dat I could find and also my file tree for allhyph, without success.
Even CTAN does not find allhyph.
Should I ask on the main site?

@PeterGrill yes sorry I decided to sleep. Part of the problem was that you are going \textcolor{\begin{align}.... which is \leavevmode\begin{align} which puts a blank para at the top, but there were still spacing issues may look later but bit of a rush today (office closes for teh holidays at lunch time:-)
@StephanLehmke or just generate a pattern file with every two letter sequence in the alphabet (for some definition of alphabet) with a 1 between the letters (which you could do as a tex expandable loop and not need a file at all...

9:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle Great idea! Should I still ask a question on the main site so you can get a tick for this?
Is there any way to apply \patterns locally? I'm writing a package which would depend on truncate and if any user of my package would need to rebuild formats this would severely restricht the applicability of my package.
Otherwise I'd need an alternative to \truncate with the breakall option. Is there something like a \clipbox command anywhere? (short of using TikZ)

Yay checkcites is updated!

@StephanLehmke classic tex (and pdftex and xetex as far as I know) needs initex (because the memory requirements of making the hyphenation trie would stress a machine from 1979:-)
@StephanLehmke No just downvote a few of egregs to compensate, it's easier/quicker that way

@StephanLehmke of course you should! A question about allowing hyphenation everywhere is really interesting!

@tohecz Ok, will do. It seems I'll need to ask for alternatives anyway. The use of \truncate is a really minor part of the package, no need to invent a new language for it. I wonder how allhyph disappeared since 2001...

9:48 AM
@StephanLehmke It is a cleanup before 2012-12-21

Isn't there also a package for truncating strings to a certain number of characters? It's a monospace font anyway.

@StephanLehmke adjustbox (since it is monospace...)? :p

@tohecz Great! This seems to be it. If I can just clip a box to a given length that's sufficient. Don't care if characters get mutiliated.

10:07 AM
@tohecz Of course. I confess it was a slightly tongue-in-cheek tag, a very mild alternative to "Vote to close"

2 hours later…
12:14 PM
@StephanLehmke sorry, I didn't want to offend you

@tohecz No it was completely in earnest. It's for a reporting application where there is exactly so and so much space in the margin and I really do not care when a character is cut in half :-)
I really didn't know where to find a clipping box.

@StephanLehmke ok, still I think the chars are copy-pastable from a PDF, even if they're outside. But it's not reliable

@tohecz Anyway, with accsupp I could even make it paste as a much longer text ;-)

@StephanLehmke or use PDF ballon-tips

About the meta thread on hats, can I add a link to the online episode of South Park named "Free hat"? :)

kan
12:48 PM
Gotta love emacs.

@kan And hate vim.

kan
@egreg nooo... I'll like to learn both. :)
I am doing good enough with emacs... that is, feeling at home.

@kan Impossible. They fight for the same memory locations.

kan
@egreg in my brain? :)

@egreg not so true, I know people using emacs for local stuff and vi for remote access

12:51 PM
@tohecz They have a defective brain. :)

kan
@egreg Answers my question as well. :)

@egreg schzyophreny!

kan
@PauloCereda Wow!

kan
12:58 PM
Haven't heard of quork.

LOLLLLLLLL!!!! @PauloCereda
@egreg right, will do

My number of bronze badges (667) is now safer in view of tomorrow.

1:13 PM
@egreg yeah, and if you check my profile today, you see visited: 100 consecutive. Does it mean something? :)

@tohecz To be on the safe side, I'll try to hit rep cap as soon as possible, tomorrow morning. Anybody knows at what time (UTC) the end of the world is scheduled?

@tohecz Fanatic! Congrats. :)
Mine tells 607 consecutive. :)

@egreg some sources say it's going to be 23.30, some 23.00. It is surely after 21.00 when Vaclav Klaus gives a public speech
@PauloCereda you're a screwed addict

@egreg I think we could ask Vivi, since she's in Melbourne. I think the world will end first for the Aussies. :)

@tohecz So I should be able to hit rep cap. :)

1:19 PM
@tohecz Shut up. :P

@PauloCereda <3 You're so cute when you say bad words :)

kan
\circledarrow?

@tohecz \heart

@PauloCereda Here's mine

@egreg Wow! :)

1:22 PM
@egreg nice score, one downvote and you're at the army size in one of the Bible stories :)

This is mine.

@tohecz Which is a number explicitly mentioned in Revelation. Uh, oh. :)

kan
Can someone help me tweak the following code to magnify the circlearrowleft:

@egreg I like the fact that "Revelations" is translated to "Apocalypse" in Portuguese. :)

kan
$\xymatrix{\ar @{} [dr] |{\circlearrowleft}
A \ar[d] \ar[r] & A \ar[d] \\
B \ar[r] & C }$

1:23 PM
@egreg there's still 20 to go in your todays rep, uffff
@PauloCereda it is "Vision of John" in Czech ;)

@tohecz How nice. :) Personally I'd prefer Revelations, but Apocalypse is catchy. :P

@PauloCereda we're pacifists you know ...

@tohecz Translation stuff. :)

@PauloCereda It's "Apocalisse" in Italian. From "ἀποκάλυψις", which is something like "unhide", so also "reveal"

@PauloCereda The thing is, the very first translation of Bible to Czech was done from the originals (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) and not from the Latin Vulgata, with a stress on preserving the original meaning. So I suppose the Czech translation is very precise.

1:31 PM
@tohecz Assuming that the translators knew Hebrew and Greek. ;-)

It's almost the end of the world and you are still after rep points....

@egreg I would say they did, you know, they were protestants ;p Sorry, I mean, yes, top of Czech wise people in times when they were really wise.

@percusse OMG

kan
@PauloCereda no wonder omg is where this was posted, oops! Damn you spacebar!

@PauloCereda In English, it's technically 'The Revelation of St John the Divine', but everyone calls it 'Apocalypse'

1:35 PM
@JosephWright Ah. :)

For some reason Apocalypse sounds like tropical dance to me... which might turn out to be true, you never know

Just checked a catholic bible I have here in English. It's "The Book of Revelation". :)

I somehow like this version in English, when I really want to understand it ;)
How do I check that my flight ticket is valid if Smartwings says they don't know the ticket?

2:41 PM
Hullo!

@unNaturhal Konnichiwa. :)

3:20 PM
@PauloCereda Japanese? :O

@unNaturhal He's a man full of resources. :)

@egreg Cool! xD
How are you guys?

@unNaturhal How's your paper going?

@egreg Very very slowly... The exam is tomorrow, and I wrote just 1/4 of it

@unNaturhal Well, it's better to hurry up and not lose time chatting. :)

3:28 PM
@egreg I'm trying to complete the ER diagram in TIKZ..

@unNaturhal I hope it's not too big.

@egreg Not so big, but it seems to exceed out of the page margin..

@unNaturhal Well, you can't squeeze an elephant in a jewel box.

@egreg Oh.. I know.. I'm thinking to rotate the image of 90°.. but first I would complete it.. there are too many colors, and too many shape dimension that I would fix

@unNaturhal This is the right approach. When it's finished you can decide how to put it into the page.

3:38 PM
@egreg :) I'm less stupid then I seem

4:18 PM
@unNaturhal Yes. One of the three words I know in Japanese. :)

@PauloCereda Which are the other two? :o

@unNaturhal I also know arigatou gozaimasu and sayonara. :)

@PauloCereda I know the meaning of Okamura, since it's a name of one of the presidental candidates in Czech Rep.

4:58 PM
um
I swear sometimes tlmgr thinks its updated when it hasn't: pastie.org/pastes/5557951/text?key=xqiqwf3zpdrdyf7hobg
well this is worrying:

@Gnintendo That answer is pretty normal.

@egreg thanks for your comment- I deleted my answer in favour of tohecz's

@cmhughes Simpler methods should be preferred. ;-)

@egreg agreed, hence the deletion. Not sure why I didn't remember the correct way, but oh well :)

@cmhughes Too few math papers to write?

5:11 PM
@egreg :)

5:47 PM
@JosephWright: Time to close: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/2982/…
Good job, everybody! :)

@PauloCereda Done

@JosephWright Wow, you are fast. :)

@PauloCereda I already knew that we had a winner, was just waiting for Marc

@JosephWright :)
@JosephWright: I was hoping @DavidCarlisle would get the book. :)

Q: Why does TeX does not have a proper Content Management System?

mafpI am wondering why the Tex community does not have some sort of central Content Management System for version control and bug tracking, say, at CTAN. This community is surely large and mature enough for such an infrastructure, see TX.SX. It is embracing new technology when useful, see, again, TX....

Have we had something similar before?
Also, CMS is clearly not what is meant!

5:52 PM
@JosephWright Indeed.
That's the price we have to pay for a decentralized system. :)

@PauloCereda Lots of reasons come to mind: licenses, people's priorities, time commitments, ...

@JosephWright Agreed.
@JosephWright: Two things would be needed: a TSR and a TCP. :)
TSR: TeX Specification Request, and TCP: TeX Community Process
:)

6:32 PM

@percusse Cool!

@PauloCereda not quite :) My idea was to put some nodes at the corners of T and N and when you connect them some sort of an A forms. But it looked too flashy :)

6:55 PM
CTAN : Bringing anarchy to TeX world since the beginning

My first two hand-drawn letters before I blow everybody's mind off with my upcoming font :P

7:14 PM
Hello guys! I tell you, it's not only math.SE and SO that are screwed, this thing seems to affect the whole SE but the TeX site...

7:37 PM
@PauloCereda didn't I?

I would never think that I would get so unhappy about a site to ask for my account to be deleted (not here of course)

8:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)

8:30 PM
daaang I had a rounding error it was 132 definitely 132
:P

@percusse ooh true!

@PauloCereda Must be a bug in my circuitry....

@percusse Hmm

@Brent.Longborough Wow CTAN on Commodore 64 . Clever idea

@DavidCarlisle You rascal. :)
I always wondered what that code was doing, good to see some documentation for it. — David Carlisle 34 mins ago

8:52 PM
@egreg LOL

9:35 PM
@PauloCereda 30 ahead of DPC for the week. He's losing impetus. ;-)

@percusse LOL

9:59 PM
@egreg Office Christmas dinner, we all went off at lunchtime to hotel for rest of day, so no work and no tex (I had to give you a bit of a chance to catch up)

@DavidCarlisle Good dinner?

@egreg yes not bad actually (and I won a bottle of champagne :-)

@DavidCarlisle No book, but champagne. Good alternative.

10:34 PM
Hi @all, what do I do when I have a bug report for an orphaned package? How does a takeover of maintainance usually work? BTW, is this a Q for the main site?

@mafp What package are you referring to?

@egreg refcheck again

@egreg If @DavidCarlisle is a Portal player, I'd say he's losing momentum. :)

@mafp I'd say simply to use showlabels; I don't see why one should check whether a label has actually been used.
There is some procedure for taking over maintainance for an orphaned package, which involves posting a message in comp.text.tex, IIRC, after having tried to contact the present maintainer.

10:50 PM
@egreg That is certainly an option. My use cases are: 1) when I gave some equation a label, I intended to say someting about that eq. If the label is not used, I forgot something. 2) I have a bibliography that I know should be cited completely. So I add a \nocite{*}, and see which references get flagged as uncited.

@mafp For the references there's the most famous checkcites script! For the equations, a good plan of the paper helps better. :)

@egreg :-)

oh my, MATLAB questions on TeX.SX. Eeeek.......

@percusse well makes a change from tikz

@DavidCarlisle I already know that secretly you are tracing tikz code.

11:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle So there is a latex function in Symbolic math as well. Didn't know that.

@TorbjørnT. if you load the one you pointed out and go help latex it says see also SYM/latex so I went and searched for the thing on mathworks site:-)

or doc latex

@percusse don't mention doc, it's not my friend

@DavidCarlisle Aha. So you've started reading documentation.

@TorbjørnT. making matlab documentation is kind of one of the things I'm supposed to be doing rather than chatting here and 2012b changed the rules grrr

11:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle 2012b right... yeah I knew it
mathematica-like sections are simply idiotic

@percusse if you sell a third party toolbox, the new features of 2012b include: you can't install toolbox in matlab tree, you can not search the toolbox documentation the documentation no longer integrates into the main help contents doc and docsearch are restricted to mathworks toolboxes....

@DavidCarlisle Ah yes. But I've never tried to install on the tree I just leave it there as a standalone thingy and put on the path. Otherwise the body rejects the implant.
After 5 years I'm still trying to introduce an external C compiler and none of those versions allowed me to run a .dtx-like script to install something.

@percusse yes but we have an installer then it tries to find out which versions of matlab the end user has and having found that it needs to put the toolbox somewhere and (optionally) adjust the paths so matlab finds it, putting it in <matlabroot>/toolbox helped organise that and has worked since teh beginning of time until this year:-)

@DavidCarlisle In my field, that's just impossible anyway if you are overloading the functions so you get stuff like this users.isy.liu.se/johanl/yalmip/…
The trick I guess is to have only .m codes but no complicated libraries which is probably the case for your stuff.

@percusse yes we have 1700 functions as compiled mex files sitting over the fortran library and a few thousand pages of documentation:-)

11:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ouch.

@percusse when you have 1700 functions in your toolbox mathworks disabling docsearch for all but mathworks products is "mildly annoying"

@DavidCarlisle Well, squirting red text on your screen without a single meaningful backtrace combined with java exception mambo jambo is my favorite matlab moment. :)
By the way I've told my boss about it and we'll see what we can do depending our humble Python homebrew performance.
Otherwise we'll knock your door.

@percusse want to buy a Fortran Library? Ah I see you might:-)

@DavidCarlisle It's not possible to express our frustration with MATLAB on the chat. I'll probably get banned heheh.
We are working very closely with the industry and we are wasting a lot of time and money even though we know that the solution is just sitting there.

11:48 PM
13 minutes to the end of the world! Woohoo!

@PauloCereda Which cult are you coming from? :P
plays Iron Maiden's two minutes to midnight in the background

@percusse LOL
Hey world! BRING IT ON!
8 minutes!

@PauloCereda The source I linked says differently: it will be at 11:11 UTC. See timeanddate.com/countdown/maya

@egreg Oh. :( I wanted the world to end now. :(

@PauloCereda OK, let's wait 7 minutes. :)

11:53 PM
Apparently a very close place nearby in my hometown, famous for the wine, is not going to be affected. I mean come on isn't there an inherent machine precision limit to stupidity ?

@egreg Yay! :)

If there is anything you guys didn't round to doing before the end of the world, it doesn't end for eight hours in my time zone, so feel free to let me know ;)

I'm going to update my TL distro before the world ends. :)

apocalypse safezones .... Unbelievable....

@percusse Good marketing.

@percusse It's like that meme, f### this area in particular

How can you escape from the doomsday while next town .... ah whatever.... idiots

Thinking of the winter hats, it wouldn't be fair: @egreg and @DavidCarlisle would have more than 100 hats to choose from. :)

@PauloCereda which is the case anyway. they have many hats already

OMG 2 minutes!

11:59 PM
@PauloCereda good luck! you can do it!
