@PauloCereda Yea, and against Real Madrid even! It was a really good game, fun to watch :-)
The masses streaming to the stadium pass under my office window (office is 500m from "Westfalenstadion"). Yesterday I listened to the game live on the radio (and through the window) and later watched the repetition on TV.

8:44 AM
@StephanLehmke How nice! :)

A: How do operating systems… run… without having an OS to run in?

mouvicielIn the beginning there was no power in the CPU. And the Man said "let there be power", and the CPU started to read from a given address in memory and execute the instruction that was present there. Then the next one and so on until the end of the power. This was the boot up. Its task was to loa...

This answer should be moved to christianity.stackexchange.com — Coomie yesterday
LOL

@PauloCereda such a perfect (and basically very precise!) answer! and nice site design as well, 3rd one to add to my "likes" :)

9:48 AM
@tohecz :)
@JosephWright: Oh my, Heiko's hologo already has LaTeX3! :) (oops, wrong smiley)

10:08 AM
does anybody know the tex template of this pdf?
thks in advance

Hi @Matteo !

and eventually, do you think it would be a bothering question to direclty ask whop made it for the template?
hi @tohecz...thks for pointing out the chat

you're welcome
@Matteo Now to the question: @Paulo? @Andrew?

It looks like a modified moderncv to me.

@PauloCereda - i'm kind of a beginner in latex...

10:12 AM
@Matteo Don't worry, we are all newbies. :) I'm here for teh duckz. :)

ehehhe ;)

I think a nice start would be looking at some entries here: tex.stackexchange.com/search?q=moderncv

I don't know - I've little experience of CVs. I do know that I'm not keen on folks posting other people's CVs and saying "How do I do that?". It may be legal, but it feels a bit off. Far better to use others' CVs as a source of inspiration and then use a template with scope for variation. So try to identify what it is you like about that CV and then ask "How do I do X starting with Y package for CVs?".

There's a class named moderncv which has a similar layout to the one you posted here.

Here's our general question on this:
180
Q: LaTeX template for resume/curriculum vitae

OtisIf you have a TeX'ed resume, did you use a template or make your own? Are there any useful packages? What looks the most professional? How about special considerations for different areas of work (e.g. in academia)?

10:16 AM
@AndrewStacey - I see you commentated also on my question. The CV was public, so I didn't want to make it impossible for people to find the person, just wipe out the personal info...anyway I appreciate the suggestion, but my intentions were not to copy it, but use it as a starter style for mine, and then modify it

10:28 AM
@Matteo So then a better question would be about finding a customisable template for CVs; you could extract what you think are the main points from that CV and say that you want to be able to do those. But, thinking of my own CV, starting from someone's actual CV is a bad idea as most good ones (not saying that mine is) will be highly customised. Better to start from something simple but flexible.

user19161
@Matteo Anyway, why copy someone's CV? Be original!

user19161
If I were an employer I would look for originality in my candidates!

user19161
Sure, take a look at some to get a feel, but after that do it your way!

@Matteo For context, we recently had another similar question: tex.stackexchange.com/q/78791/86 so my reaction against posting CVs here is not just aimed at you.

@PauloCereda Speak by yourself! :)

10:36 AM
@egreg That's not fair. :P You know everything! :)

@PauloCereda The correct way of saying it: "We've all been newbies". :)

user19161
@egreg Do you mean "for yourself"?

@egreg ooh! :) Much better. :)

@JasperLoy Yes, of course; thanks.

I'm frozen in time, so I'm still a newbie. :)

user19161
10:38 AM
@egreg By the way the bearded man you posted that day was you?

I can't even explain how my own stuff works. That's why I don't write arara answers. :P

@JasperLoy With a hat on. :)

user19161
@PauloCereda I am not a newbie; I am a duck!

@JasperLoy ooh sexy.
:P

user19161
Oops, I think duck has another meaning. I was not referring to that one!

10:39 AM
@egreg Too much epicness in one photo. :)
@JasperLoy Oops. Let me check.
4. Slang A person, especially one thought of as peculiar.
This one?

user19161
@PauloCereda Actually I am not too sure about that meaning now, so never mind. =)

@PauloCereda Funny thing is we don't actually use one at all: just \LaTeX3

@JosephWright Me neither. :) I'm writing a talk for today about TeX, LaTeX and friends, so I had to use some "extra" logos. Heiko's hologo was very useful, so I decided to use them for all logos. :)
At least, in this talk. :)

user19161
@paulo Do you know that Fedora 18 is delayed for over a month? 11 Dec it seems.

@JasperLoy I saw it. :( The new version seems very good, so I think it's worth the wait. :)

user19161
10:51 AM
@PauloCereda Yes, the only reason why I don't like Fedora is the short support cycle.

@JasperLoy I can relate to that. Fedora has two cycles per year, so it's quite complicated to catch up.
On the other hand, I think Fedora is always in the bleeding edge, which is a good thing for me. :)

user19161
@PauloCereda Actually it is good that it is 6 months. One can skip alternate releases and install once a year. But if it had a 2 year support that would be better. CentOS might be an option to consider.

user19161
By the way, Ubuntu 12.10 has nicer looking colours and shapes.

11:14 AM
@JasperLoy I'm not a fan of CentOS. :)

11:44 AM
@PauloCereda I don't really think xii is suitable for those questions

@DavidCarlisle HOLY XII, BATMAN!

@PauloCereda see I finally found a tikz syntax that I understand

@DavidCarlisle Indeed! :)

This can be closed as TL (see OP's comment "David was correct" (surprisingly enough:-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/79029/…

@DavidCarlisle LOL

12:26 PM
Do I need to set up anything to make \mathtt work with beamer? :)
Redeclaring math alphabet \mathtt on input line 125.
\begin{rage}
:)

@PauloCereda It should just work (did in my one attempt at beamer)

12:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh, so I'm probably confused. :)
My MWE:
\documentclass[11pt]{beamer}

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

\begin{document}

\begin{frame}

$\mathtt{\alpha + \beta}$

\end{frame}

\end{document}
Oh wait, it does work!
2
The problem is the greek letter!
I hate them. <3
Another "@David was correct" moment. :)

mathtt only affects alphabets greek (in classic tex math) isn't an alphabet it's a bunch of symbols.
same is true of mathbf or mathit etc

@DavidCarlisle Ah I see.

@PauloCereda If you have a monospace greek font you could get it to work (most easily by getting it working in text then using \mbox{\texttt{ some unicode characters for greek}}}

@DavidCarlisle Thanks, I'll take a look. :)

1:05 PM
I have voted to reopen the following question. Reasoning: while the original version may have been "too localized", the OP's added example helped to reveal an incompatibility between \nobreakdash and \usepackage[czech]{babel}.
1
Q: Usage of \nobreakdash

chejnikI use the \nobreakdash command to disallow a linebreak after the dash in short expressions like -s, -ar etc. I use ({\nobreakdash}-s, {\nobreakdash}-ar) but it seems not work as can be seen on the picture below. Here comes minimul example: \documentclass[10pt,a4paper,twocolumn]{extbook} \usep...

@lockstep Done; the title needs to be changed, though

@egreg Changed.

@lockstep Voted. :) We still need one.

@PauloCereda Done
My copy of @NicolaTalbot's book has arrived :-)
I also have another one typeset in LaTeX to read, but this time about chemistry
James Keeler does a good job on the typesetting :-)

@JosephWright Yay! :)
@JosephWright I woudn't survive the first five pages. :)

1:22 PM
@PauloCereda Possibly not :-)

@JosephWright "Does this page smells like methamphetamine?" :)

I'm hoping it's a bit more gentle than another book on the same topic (also done in LaTeX):

@JosephWright Lovely spin, wonderful spin! Oopsie, wrong word. :)

@JosephWright can you un-CW this?

A: Extra space between footnote numbers and content for high count

jonThe only value that is important here, given the hang option, is: \setlength{\footnotemargin}{2mm} which is very small for any two digit number. footmisc sets the length to 1.8em by default, which might be too big for your taste unless your footnotes number in the 100s (in my experience, you...

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Hey, are you still here?

Is anybody else having trouble with the tlmgr update?

user19161
@Gnintendo What's the problem?

@JasperLoy It says it's an upgrade available, then that it has applied the update etc. However, when tlmgr is started back up, it still hasn't been updated and it just wants to update itself again.
Rinse, repeat.

user19161
1:54 PM
@Gnintendo It wants to update the packages or itself?

itself
I'll give you a picture bio
Startup (normal so far): grab.by/h1Os
now, click update all packages like normal
err, "update all installed"
Now, this comes up:
Now, click OK, and this comes up:

user19161
Oh I never got into this situation.

Now, click OK on that.
and the program shuts down.
Even if you wait half an hour and start it back up, it will do the same thing :<
Additionally, a monitoring of processes would indicate that the process has closed

user19161
Have you tried using "tlmgr update --self" at the terminal?

I was looking up the tlmgr documentation now :P

2:00 PM
@JasperLoy: What is going on over there?

I was just wondering if it was being a bitch for everybody else too

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Nothing, I ws just wondering where you are staying. You mentioned Hotel 81.

@JasperLoy: I have returned to my country.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Ah OK. You come here several times a year?

ran fine in terminal, shrug

user19161
2:02 PM
@Gnintendo So everything is fine now?

nod

@JasperLoy: More than 5 times maybe.

user19161
@Gnintendo Yay!

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ For the reason you mentioned to me in the email?

@JasperLoy: I made an animation for you. Yes. As I mentioned in the email.

user19161
2:03 PM
@ガベージコレクタ Oh OK, so where is it? Email or what?

@JasperLoy: In my own chat room that you want to destroy.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ OK, I will take a look now...

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Hey I know how to hunt for things. I have been on SE for OVER 9000 years!

@JasperLoy: The link will save your mouse movement. :-)

2:17 PM
@NicolaTalbot: we are spreading the word. :) ^^

@PauloCereda your unbelievably perfect color scheme drives me crazy!

@tohecz awww thanks. :) It's just a humble theme. :)

@PauloCereda the point is that you mix 3 random colours and it looks great, and then I mix 3 random colours and it looks ugly

@tohecz oh!

2:35 PM
Is there a way to repeat a command n times?
easily and inline

@Gnintendo \yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes\yes

:(
there isn't a primitive or something that just does it over and over? :(

@Gnintendo you could use \loop or \@for or any of the for loop macros from etoolbox (I think) or tiikz or...

hmm
where should I go for documentation?

\count@=0 \loop \advance\count@\@ne hello \ifnum\count@<100 \repeat

2:40 PM
\documentclass{minimal}
\usepackage{pgffor}
\begin{document}
\foreach \n in {1,...,4}{\yes}
\end{document}
I found that, which seems nice^
also @DavidCarlisle Would your primitive repeat it 100 times or 101?

@Gnintendo well except that \foreach \n in {1,...,4}{\yes} is more tokens than 4 copies of yes

@DavidCarlisle There's a command line tool in Unix called yes, which repeats the very same message forever. :)

@Gnintendo 100 if I read it right
@PauloCereda we used to use that to pipe responses into the latex build at one point but if you get the primitive tex missing file error piping the same response forever means the build takes forever which isn't so good:-)

@DavidCarlisle We could build a machine to solve the halting problem. :)

@PauloCereda out of lego?

2:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yay! :)
@DavidCarlisle: I can't wait to watch your "LegoTeX" talk in the UK-TUG meeting next year. :)
3

@PauloCereda First I have to build / get M to build this:

@DavidCarlisle I can solve a cube :<

@Gnintendo so can I ( I used to do it in less than a minute, takes me longer now, but solving it with lego looks more impressive)

I can solve a 7x7x7 cube, can the machine do THAT?
:D

@DavidCarlisle OMG

2:50 PM
I can also solve a dodecahedron-shaped puzzle :O

son of a bitch
I can solve any-sized rubik's cube, it just takes longer the bigger they get
(I know/use methods applicable to n-sized cubes)

@Gnintendo Now problems parametrised by n are harder to solve with a physical robot:-)

whee!
I win

@Gnintendo Mathematicians always beat engineers in the end.

2:53 PM
:D
@DavidCarlisle The way I was able to solve the dodecahedron-shaped puzzles of n-size were actually by generalizing my cube methods
@DavidCarlisle That 7x7x7 solving robot must be horribly slow/inefficient: I can easily solve it in under 15 minutes
That robot took nearly 40

3:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle what's going on here: pdflatex '\RequirePackage{something}\input{somethingelse}' seems to set \jobname to something and not somethingelse.

@AndrewStacey It's a feature
TeX doesn't know about this newfangled file/package/class distinction, it just sets \jobname to the first file it sees

@DavidCarlisle I see. I thought that \RequirePackage got round this but I must be misremembering this method of doing something before \inputting the real file. Probably in those examples the raw code was in the command line and not in a package.

4:00 PM
@PauloCereda After this year's success, I have to find another international speaker for UK-TUG (vai Skype). I wonder about @egreg :-)

@JosephWright Next year?

@JosephWright egreg and Gonzalo. :)

@egreg Yes: we have a meeting every year :-)
@PauloCereda Perhaps

user19161
@joseph Sorry to ask you again. You said that LaTeX3 might be out in TL2014 right?

@egreg Yay, we will be in the next meeting! :)
We could try a TeX.sx Skype meeting someday. :)

4:03 PM
@JasperLoy I think I said something like 'it would be nice'. Bruno was threatening to try to write his thesis that way. I'm afraid that does not look realistic to me, as most of the team are busy with 'real life'.

@AndrewStacey pdflatex -jobname somethingelse '\RequirePackage{something}\input{somethingelse}'

@PauloCereda Would need a paid-for Skype account

@JosephWright oops. :(

@PauloCereda You can have up to 10 people on a Skype premium call

@JosephWright wow!

4:04 PM
@PauloCereda Perhaps someone can be convinced to pay :-)

@JosephWright or I'll try to come up with our own streaming solution. :P

user19161
@JosephWright Ah, real life is also complex life. Sometimes it is imaginary life as well. =)

We can use Stefan's server at his kitchen. :D

@egreg Thanks.

@JasperLoy Well yes

user19161
4:05 PM
@PauloCereda There is a server in the kitchen?

@PauloCereda For streaming, I really think talking to River Valley is the way forward

@JasperLoy With TeX implemented in the toaster

@Joseph I have an English question: do you really write "to minimise something" ?

@tohecz Yes

@JasperLoy Stefan has one, and a HUGE one. Meanwhile, I only have a shameful waffle machine. :)
@egreg LOL

4:06 PM
ok, thanks

@tohecz Of course, a bit more context would help :-)

@tohecz minimise, analyse, theatre, metre, colour

user19161
@PauloCereda Server can also mean someone who serves the food. =)

@JosephWright Voice wouldn't be a problem to stream. :) I'm curious on how can I make multiple cams to be displayed in a matrix layout, so we can have a conference. :)
@JasperLoy Stefan showed us a photo. :)
Oct 2 at 19:01, by Stefan Kottwitz
@PauloCereda VPN, SSH, sounds like something I've already got. Want to see a photo of my humble network tech?

@tohecz Yes, it's in a corner in my kitchen.

@PauloCereda That is a serious home hub!

4:09 PM
@JosephWright Indeed. :) Germans. <3

user19161
@PauloCereda Wow, looks like something in the movies...

@JasperLoy We all would like to live near Stefan so we could steal his Eldorado Wi-Fi connection. :)

Q: how to generate link

graceyjinganyone here knows how to get this link http://example.com/c/?u=OnlineGoldMine&c=quiz1&ad= this area: ?u=OnlineGoldMine&c=quiz1&ad= ,does anyone know how to have that link I discover it was connected to index.html but was wondering why or how it happens, since im new with this kin...

@JosephWright: Sspam?
Oh my I sssssound like a ssssssnake.

@PauloCereda At least OT

@PauloCereda really? Doesn't he simply want \usepackage{url} \url{http:// ... ?...} ?

@egreg Indeed. :) I have no idea what's going on. :)
@tohecz I can't tell. :)
On a second thought, it might not be spam. :)

4:13 PM
Ok, he's "Unregistered" which is suspicious

user19161
There are some registered users who accidentally create another unregistered account.

Just in case, I disabled the link (even though I know the site is not malware)

@ガベージコレクタ 2 MILIONS ?!?!

@tohecz: Yes.
@tohecz: mass production scanner is too expensive.

user19161
4:19 PM
@ガベージコレクタ Actually I don't understand the question. How can LEGO take pictures?

@JasperLoy: You can add a camera.

@JasperLoy LEGO is Turing Complete these days - you didn't know?

I wonder if Lady Gag will wear a Lego-based dress some day.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Do you mean place the camera on top of a LEGO structure? Or the camera is part of LEGO?

@JasperLoy There's a LEGO computer with USB interface, so as long as you have a USB camera, you can attach a camera to LEGO

4:21 PM
@JasperLoy: We can attach DSLR on the top of the LEGO construction as an integral part.

@ガベージコレクタ But I suppose that the answer is "Nothing reliable"

@JasperLoy: It is a big project to get much money :-)

i would say, go for a copy machine with sheet tray

@tohecz: A copy machine costs much I think

@ガベージコレクタ Yeah, it does. But even with a 99% reliability of your LEGO system, you'll have to stop the machine, correct its behaviour and start it again 20 thousand times

4:26 PM
@tohecz: If possible I will create more than one apparatus.
@tohecz: Lego is cheap enough.

@ガベージコレクタ it doesn't change the fact that 1% breakdown means 20 thousand stop'n'goes

@tohecz: At least the LEGO system can do the job at the beginning with cheaper cost as opposed to purchasing a single expensive machine that costs too high at the beginning. No budget for the latter.

4:48 PM
@egreg: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/79091/… ABNT again! Nooo! :)

@PauloCereda: I need a small installation introduction ;-) github.com/cereda/quack Can you help me? Where must I save the script? I have some other unix scripts and I don't know where to save this.
FYI: I am trying to work with my Mac without installing of Ubuntu

@MarcoDaniel Would you like to use quack? I feel honoured. :)

@PauloCereda Of course. It's a useful script

I think you can create a bin directory in your home and it's probably enough (I can't remember if ~/bin is already added to the path, a quick echo $PATH will tell us).

@PauloCereda Unfortunately not ;-)
Marcos-MacBook-Pro:~ marco$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin

5:02 PM
Try creating a .profile in your ~ folder with this:
alias ls='ls -Gla'
PATH=~/bin:$PATH

@PauloCereda Works ;-)
Marcos-MacBook-Pro:~ marco$ echo $PATH
/Users/marco/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/texbin

@MarcoDaniel Sexy! :)
Now put quack there. :)
You could also put it in /usr/local/bin, but in that case it would be global.

@PauloCereda First I need mkdir bin -- I guess --,.)
@PauloCereda I love my local scripts. My wife don't need such things.

@MarcoDaniel Let her try rm -rf /Users/marco/*.*
:)
@MarcoDaniel: use iTerm2 instead of Apple's default Terminal. :)

@PauloCereda My wife doesn't know the terminal ;-)
@PauloCereda What's this?

5:12 PM
@MarcoDaniel iterm2.com

@PauloCereda YEAH a new toy

@MarcoDaniel BTW, if you liked MacVim, put the mvim script inside your new bin folder. :)
That way, you'll be able to mvim file from the terminal. :)

@PauloCereda Indeed. Thanks

@MarcoDaniel Put MacVim.app inside your Applications folder, and mvim inside bin. :)

@PauloCereda quack consists of two files. The cmd file is used by Mac. Do I need chmod +x

5:19 PM
@MarcoDaniel NO! Use the other one!
Use quack. :)

@PauloCereda Really? gedit is my default editor for Unix

@PauloCereda You know that vim can edit multiple files anyway, don't you? I have kpsevi bound to vi $(kpsewhich $*).

@AndrewStacey I know. :) Sadly, I have some editors that can't, that's why I added a for. :(

Does anyone try textmate?

5:32 PM
@PauloCereda Ah, I see.

@AndrewStacey I wish I could use a one-line solution too. :)

5:58 PM
@PauloCereda I won't support it until they put the package on CTAN

@egreg I don't think they will ever do. :)

@PauloCereda Why forcing wannabe users to manually install it? :(

@egreg Agreed. :( I think someday I'll write something ABNT-related to help every poor Brazilian student out there. :)

6:21 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, cool! Thanks :-)

@NicolaTalbot It's an honour. :) Your book is great, it deserves to be known. :) Specially in Brazil, where we don't have a TUG neither a good TeX background in both academia or market. :)

@PauloCereda Blush ;-)
@PauloCereda I've heard back from my sister regarding our great-grandfather. It was Bahia he was wrecked off not Rio!
(1906)

@NicolaTalbot Oh. Gimme a sec, I'll find it.
@NicolaTalbot: found it.

@PauloCereda Oh wow! Thanks :-)

And I know the beach where it is.
It's Amaralina.
@NicolaTalbot :)

6:33 PM
@PauloCereda I'm going to visit my mum for the school half-term next week, so I'll let her know. She'll be really interested.

@NicolaTalbot I'll look for more info here. :) I've read some comments that is one of the most beautiful diving places in Bahia.

@NicolaTalbot Did you say your book had a second tone?

@JosephWright The sequel is "Using LaTeX to Write a PhD Thesis", only I haven't finished updating it yet.
@PauloCereda Shipwrecks are fascinating in an eerie way, but it's really weird to think I wouldn't exist if the ship hadn't gone down.

@NicolaTalbot No, I meant the printing: grey scale or two-tone?

@JosephWright Oops, sorry. I misread that as tome. Time I went back to the opticians! It's grey scale.

6:41 PM
@NicolaTalbot Ah right

@NicolaTalbot Your great-grandfather was brave to sail the sea in the beginning of the century, and even braver to take the risk of living in a strange country, overseas. At the end of the day, I think these "moves", decisions in life are the ones that actually make a difference. :)

We have got a close-to-NARQ (IMHO) question, I don't think that an answer much better than the one I've just deleted can be provided. Your opinions?

@tohecz Tell the OP to read xii.tex. Courtesy of @DavidCarlisle. :)

@tohecz NARQ

@JosephWright should I undelete my answer, and we close it? Or should I make the answer a comment?

@PauloCereda There must've been a lot of wrecks back then. I've just found that he (Charles Loreth Coxwell) made a statement as a witness to an earlier wreck in 1891: plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports/16151.asp

Can someone with a regular (not CVS) version of TikZ compile my code in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/79076/… and see if the error is reproducible?

@tohecz I'd go with a comment, and then one to say that its not really suitable as a question

It might be a CVS version artifact....

@percusse No room for a new dimen

@JosephWright can you convert it to a comment? or is it too long?

6:51 PM
@JosephWright Whoa, really?

@tohecz Done

Let me uninstall the CVS version.

@percusse Fixed that with etex

@JosephWright For me, etex got rid of the no room error but then gave a Missing $ inserted

@NicolaTalbot Yup

@NicolaTalbot That wreck report gives me shivers. :(

@JosephWright It's the $R_{22}$ inside a displaymath environment
@PauloCereda Me too!
