12:00 AM
@egreg You remind me of my algebra teacher. :)

@KannappanSampath @leo Sorry, bed time

leo
@egreg good nite!

@egreg Oh, sorry about my attempt at weak humour. Good night... Have a good night's sleep. :)

12:12 AM
@KannappanSampath Thanks. Corrected. I am not usually done with a solution until I add an image. So if you see any typos like that feel free to correct them.

12:35 AM
@guido: please tell me why you changed my edits?

6 hours later…
6:08 AM
@topskip Unfortunately I am in Berlin. I am visiting a course about SAP. It's horrible. @PauloCereda: I think we need a big tex.sx meeting ;-)

1 hour later…
7:19 AM
@MarcoDaniel Good plan. Perhaps we should all go to EuroTeX next year!
Or perhaps everyone could come to the UK-TUG meeting :-)

8:04 AM
Hi =)

@JosephWright It's a good plan ;-) My wife and I want to visit UK next year. Maybe we can combine it.

8:25 AM
@JosephWright Good plan! At least I could take the EuroStar train for the first time! ;)

8:36 AM
@tohecz Indeed. This will be my family adventure ;-)

@DavidCarlisle But wouldn't the break be almost always after the space (because it would have lower vbadness

8:47 AM
@tohecz No there isn't a break point after the space, it is before

9:08 AM
@PauloCereda Installation stalled for some reason. Have to pick up again this evening. Which is a better slogan: "Rasp is the new black" or "Raspberry is the new Apple"?

Heya
I guess I will askon the main about this, but is there any way to make the captions narrower? =)

@JosephWright Or everybody could visit me. :)

I figured it out! =)

9:25 AM
@AndrewStacey How about "Raspberry is the new Samsung"? It won't take long for Apple to sue them. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, definitely a side of Apple that's less salacious. Perhaps the bitten-out bit has gone a bit brown.
Do I mean "salacious"? Probably not. Ah, well. English isn't my first language.

@AndrewStacey ooh a naughty word. :)

@AndrewStacey English is not your first language?

@Andrew: Speaking of Apple, I'm thinking of getting an iPad. :)

9:45 AM
My eyes bleed after seeing these tables
1
Q: Suggestions for long and wide table

ThanosI want to add a "set" of tables in a document. Something like that I thought of combing somehow supertabular for spliting in pages and landscape in order to rotate it... I don't know how to achieve it or if there is another better solution. Any ideas will be more than welcomed!!!

@egreg They are scary! :(

@PauloCereda Did you notice the font used? :(

@egreg OMG it was worse than I thought!
Is "Kill it, kill it with fire!" a valid close reason? :)

@PauloCereda We could add the tag.
3

@egreg Oh my! :) Great idea! :)
After all, NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition. :P

9:58 AM
Did we not add a "Do not do this, cute, innocent kittens will die a horribly death if you do" tag a while ago ?

@percusse: our favorite companion:
@N3buchadnezzar Indeed, we had some sort of kitten-related tag. :)

Save the ducks, do not do this!

@N3buchadnezzar That's a good one. :)
DAT DUCK.

@PauloCereda Certainly a lot of fun. And you can now do TeX on it too! What are you waiting for?
@PauloCereda Is that really Comic Sans as a screen font, or am I just seeing it everywhere these days?

10:14 AM
@AndrewStacey Heavens no! :) It's Monaco. :)

@PauloCereda Phew. I am just being hyper-sensitive then. (There was a question on the school board: "How many things can we count with our fingers?" I was going to say "32" but then I noticed the font so corrected myself to "5" - figured "4" would also be courting controversy.)
@N3buchadnezzar I think "baby" was my first language. English came a poor second.
2

@AndrewStacey ooh! :)

@PauloCereda On which note: true(ish) story: math.ntnu.no/~stacey/CountingOnMyFingers/choose.html

@AndrewStacey oops. :)

1 hour later…
11:32 AM
@egreg You don't think multi-column landscape tables with as many vertical rules as possible are a good idea? Maybe I should suggesting using hhline and giving the rules a rainbow colour effect to ease your eyes?

11:46 AM
@DavidCarlisle So long as Comic Sans is not used, also color gradients as column background and rainbow colored rules can improve the appearance.
Proposal of description for the tag. "This question is under investigation by the Spanish Inquisition for typographical heresy. Please, check for fancy font usage, horrific chapter headers, spaced paragraphs and other common typographic sins. And repent."
4

@egreg no one expects the tag.
3

@egreg Yay! :)

12:52 PM
@egreg: I think your TL install procedure also works with Slackware out of the box. :) I'm gonna install it later on today. :)

1:08 PM
"If at first you don't succeed, try partial derivatives."

that's an option…

2 hours later…
2:46 PM
We need more noise. :)

3:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle: we poor mortals now have FF16. And you? :)
Another example of keming, this time in a diagram I had to draw using Dia:

@PauloCereda I could make a poor joke about raspberries if you like.

I swear it was written "classified"! :)
@AndrewStacey Please do it! :)

@PauloCereda "You appear to be writing the word 'classified'. Would you like some help?"
(imagine a paper clip saying that)

@AndrewStacey LOL
I still didn't give up on installing TeX in my Wii, I just need to fix some lovely glibc stuff. :)

@PauloCereda Let me know how it gets on. We've borrowed one for the year.

3:45 PM
@AndrewStacey Sure! :) I'm planning to write a blog post, in case it works.

@PauloCereda That'd be great. We could have a general post on "TeX on strange devices".

@PauloCereda I tested your podcast in the blog draft and it seems to work on my Safari.

@PauloCereda FF19 but right at the minute I'm more interested in watching updates on my Chrome 24

@AndrewStacey Great idea! :)
@egreg How nice! :) I'll try to record one as a pilot.
@DavidCarlisle Canary? :)

@PauloCereda yes but the reason i got that one might be guessed from a snippet of information at

3:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle ah how nice! :) You can also try Safari, since it's WebKit-based too. :)

@PauloCereda safari has had mathml for a year or so but it never passed google's security review to get into chrome.

@DavidCarlisle oooh!

@PauloCereda you have a mac: point safari at mozilla.org/projects/mathml/demo/texvsmml.html The implementation isn't brilliant but a good first stab, the new webkit code fixes a lot of issues and will be pushed to safari but this time also hopefully chrome.

4:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle It looks very good! :)

@PauloCereda the left hand column? :-)

@DavidCarlisle The right one. :)

4:59 PM
hello to all

@agodemar Hi Agostino! :)
11:10 LaTeX3: un nuovo gioco per i maghi e per diventarlo. Enrico Gregorio.
Yay!

@Paulo Yes! The program is out now... yes egreg is there too ;-)
@PauloCereda Do you like the poster?

@agodemar I do! A fantastic poster!
I wish I could attend.

5:15 PM
@PauloCereda EBGaramond + LuaLaTeX + microtype experim.

@agodemar A true capolavoro. :)

@PauloCereda thanks - hope to post many pics of the event - no video this time :(

@agodemar How nice! :)

@agodemar I'm jealous: you know what's going to happen at your meeting. For UK-TUG the week before, I've no idea :-)
We have got a promised 'recent record' turnout

@JosephWright We know about @DavidCarlisle's 5-hour keynote. :)
And we could lure @Brent to talk about arara too. :)

5:28 PM
@PauloCereda Possibly
Unfortunately, Nicola T can't make it, but I'll try to sell some copies of her book :-)

@JosephWright well at list a schedule is there ;-)

@JosephWright ooh! :)

@agodemar Quite. I have no idea who will speak or what about :-) We are used to this approach, luckily

Sul mare luccica l'astro d'argento. Placida è l'onda, prospero è il vento.
@JosephWright The key element is surprise. SURPRISE! :)

@JosephWright Next year I'll try to come, who knows, so long ago my last time in UK

5:42 PM
gah
I want to use TeXWorks with arara but it doesn't give me useful errors :(

@Gnintendo Uh-oh. :) Which OS are you using? :)

ooohh, --verbose
:D
@PauloCereda <3

@Gnintendo :)

hmm, now how to manually close console output, hmm

@Gnintendo I think there's an option in the Window menu. :)

5:56 PM
@PauloCereda by the way, on the poster, the logo DIAS with the eagle is my original design, I also re-did the full vector logo of my university with Federico II and the special font used

thanks <3

@agodemar Really? They look awesome! :)
@Gnintendo <3

@PauloCereda for the DIAS logo I won a contest among my colleagues 5 years ago

@agodemar Very nice! Is it an eagle in the background, isn't it? :)

@PauloCereda yes, with the silhouette of Vesuvio (our famous vulcano) under the tail
@PauloCereda compare with this guitex.org/home/images/meeting2012/…

6:03 PM
@agodemar Cool!

6:16 PM
@PauloCereda No, on this forum one should should say "No-one expects the Spanish (¿) Interrogation"

@Brent.Longborough LOL I have no idea how to typeset that. \rotatebox{90}{?} is cheating. :)
@Brent: a silly joke about ducks: como acabou o jogo de futebol entre patos? R: Empatado! :)

@PauloCereda Oh? I thought we had put it somewhere on the ABNT keyboard; perhaps I'm mistaken. It's Unicode 00BF. If you want to shout in Spanish, there's also Unicode 00A1 ¡
@PauloCereda És peru tonto

@Brent.Longborough LOL
@Brent.Longborough No, you guys forgot that symbol. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I remember now, I wanted to define all of Latin-1, but got voted down by a bunch of Brazilian keyboard manufacturers, who didn't want the extra cost of engraving all the keys

@Brent.Longborough How many keys?! :)

7:07 PM
@PauloCereda He's allright. Actually you can find the remnants of the design that is answered by Heiko and maybe David too on c.t.t.. (it's been some time). IEEE is the one who beats the drum and they have no feel for rhythm.

@percusse :P

TikZ questions are getting harder and harder. It takes at least 5 simulations to get a proper answer :)

@PauloCereda TeX fonts understand ?` for ¿

@egreg Oh my! So !` also works?

@PauloCereda Of course! With fontspec loaded fonts for XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX one should specify the option Ligatures=TeX for this to work, but using the actual character is easier. Also with \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} in (pdf)LaTeX one can use ¿ and ¡ directly.

7:20 PM
@egreg ¡Yay! :)

@PauloCereda I must understand that in Portuguese you don't use those characters, ¿do you?

@egreg No, we don't have them. :) On the other hand, Spanish uses them a lot. :)

@PauloCereda It must be difficult to make jokes in Spanish, they are so fastidious. :)

@egreg Uh-oh! :)
@egreg: speaking of languages, I was watching Milan vs. Inter in the last Sunday. My mom was near me, when the narrator said the name of Ranocchia. My mom looked at me and said, "Is there a frog there?" (ranocchio) :)

@PauloCereda "Fastidious" is one of the best false friends, another is "meretricious". Not at the level of "eventually" that for many Italians means "possibly".
@PauloCereda Poor little frog. Oh, no! They won. :)

7:37 PM
@egreg One of my favorites is "intend/pretend". In portuguese, "Eu pretendo ser um professor" -> "I intend to be a professor". "Eu finjo ser um professor" -> "I pretend to be a professor". :)
@egreg Oh no! :) Boring game though. :)

hmm
inconsolata just looks ugly when I use it with any editors :(
it gets all blurry argh

@Gnintendo it's probably because of the ClearType thingy.
Hi @StephanLehmke! We miss you! :)

@PauloCereda I'm here. Just \relaxing :-)
2

:(

@StephanLehmke :)

7:43 PM
The mix of work and vacation lately leaves little time for procrastination.

@PauloCereda Right, I'm just bitching about its lack of hinting

@Gnintendo I tried to set Inconsolata for one of my editors, but it's not a good idea. The font doesn't have a boldface, IIRC.

@PauloCereda In Italian "pretendere" can have the meaning of "fingere", but "pretend" is in the catalog of false friends too.
Of course the English are at fault, because "prentend" comes from Latin "praetendo", which is roughly "to aim at".

@egreg Agreed. :)

@egreg you can't expect us to steal words and know what they mean

7:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle Exactly! But we are having a revenge, as the usage of many words borrowed from English usually surprises the native speakers. :)

But the time of long nights and short days is coming along, and the leaves of catalogues are now getting colorful like those on the trees, so when the last of new years catalogues is printed and stored away, waiting to bloom coming spring time and its merry fairs, then customers will go to hibernation and procrastination (and software development) will reign the world of catalogue service providers till the days are getting longer again...

@PauloCereda Adobe's Source Code Pro looks like crap too :(
and it's such a nice font, too!
:(
I'm not using it small either, argh
must...find...where...to...change...texworks...syntax...highlighting...colors...
found it...that red was blinding.

8:22 PM
colour in LaTeX is just rubbish. Have to keep giving the same pathetic excuse for decades:(
1
Q: Colored text in table is floating

Frank van BerkumCurrently I am trying to create a table in which one column contains colored text. However, the color differs per cell. See the example code below, where the last column contains the (possibly) colored text. % Works as it should \begin{table}\centering\begin{tabular}{ccc} \toprule ...

9:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle It would be nicer if whatsits didn't determine the start or end of a vertical list. But probably something else would break.

user19161
@DavidCarlisle The first sentence should be written in the LaTeX books!

Yay, Skim has updates!

@PauloCereda I still see 1.3.22. Nice previewer, isn't it?

9:22 PM
@egreg Mine was outdated, you have the last version. :) It's the best previewer I've ever seen in the Mac.
@egreg: now I'll try to lure you to use SourceTree + BitBucket. :)

@PauloCereda Years ago an Italian started a similar project (I don't remember the name): his concern was a previewer that always opened the PDF at the size preferred by the user, not by the developer. It grew up nice, but then he discovered the newborn Skim and stopped developing his previewer. I believe he gave some hints for Skim.

@egreg How nice!

@PauloCereda There had been many suggestions for the application from the GuIT forum. There was another previewer called TeXniscope born specifically for TeX, which could convert DVI files on the fly. It was very fast and "no frills": ideal for work. Unfortunately the project died.

Hello boys!

@tohecz Bon soir!

9:30 PM
@egreg It's so great when we get feedback from the community. :)

@egreg: it's in one word: bonsoir

@ℝaphink At least I guessed the gender correctly. :) In Italian "sera" is feminine.

I would use some bonne soirée, after converting a 12page article with quite a lot of math from docx to LaTeX

@tohecz Bon appppettittttt - (1. It's the only French thing I know, 2. I don't know which consonant I should repeat, so I repeated all of them).

@tohecz: ouch

9:32 PM
oh and I know Je vous salue Marie, but that's all. :)

@PauloCereda I think you write simply bon apetit, don't you?

@tohecz OMG

Today, I was trying to convert an HTML Bible (David Martin version) I found online to an ePub…

@PauloCereda "I call you Marie"?

only to find that it had been "typeset" using Microsoft Word
and that pretty much every chapter had a different standard of typesetting

9:33 PM
@tohecz I think it's the beginning of the Hail Mary. :)

some not even using HTML headings for sections :'(

@PauloCereda I can show you the result, but only if you promise not to tell anybody

hey
hey

hey @hey !

@tohecz One of my favorite anecdotes. I was in charge of a Proceedings volume and one of the contributions was in Word. It was easier to convert it to LaTeX than some others which claimed to already be in LaTeX.

9:33 PM
hey @hey!

hey
Name _______________ Null?

@tohecz gasp we thought of the same joke!
:P

hey
_ means space

\def\null{\hbox{}} ?

hey
how can i allow lots of whitespace in latex?
i am trying to find solution a few hours
please help me

9:34 PM
@hey \hspace{3cm} ?

hey
no, i cant do that

@hey Horizontal or vertical?

why?

hey
i copy that data from oracle sql

@Paulo @ℝaphink do you want to see the article?

hey
9:35 PM
and it saves data
in file, with whitespace

@hey so? the data cannot contain \ ?

@tohecz I'd love to! :)

hey
with lots of spaces

@PauloCereda I think you mean @tohecz
As for me, I think I'll hit the bed (once more, poor bed)

@ℝaphink oopsie. :)

9:35 PM
@hey \obeyspaces

Who's Hermione?

@PauloCereda that has to do with Harry Potter I think…
Feeling invaded ;-)

hey
@DavidCarlisle Thank you, but it still gives me bad text... But it's better now a little

@ℝaphink oh!

@PauloCereda A famous poem by Gabriele d'Annunzio has "Ermione": La pioggia nel pineto.

9:37 PM
@hey ask a question on site with a complete document showing the problem, it's much easier with an example than here in chat

hey
Val1 Null? Type
----------------------------------------- -------- ----------------------------
name NULL VARCHAR(10)

@egreg Cool!

hey
stackexchange doesn't allow whitespaces too :D

@hey Yes, in code blocks

Ermione is a tragic opera by Rossini

9:38 PM
@hey code formatting is much easier on site in a real question, use the {} button

but I really doubt this is the context of the flag

@Paulo go to kmlinux.fjfi.cvut.cz/~hejdato1/temp there are 3 file cerny_*, orig is original version as I got it (DOCX+PDF), conv is a "meta-version" that uncovers how I do it in general, final is the final version. Please, look at them, and tell me after, I'll remove them from there.
(the jounral is open-access, but this is a proofreading version that should not be published)

@tohecz very nice! The final result is awesome. :)
I like those kinds of template. :)

@tohecz Seems good, but equation 6 is too long.

It reminds me of some of Elsevier's. :)

9:42 PM
Well, this template is not mine, I'm working on a better one
@egreg yeah, I know, I just wanted to send a version for proofreading. I have to correct that one

hey
0
Q: Allow whitespaces

hey Val1 Null? Type ----------------------------------------- -------- ---------------------------- name NULL VARCHAR(10) Latex deletes more than one whitespace. What should I do? \obeyspaces doesn't help much...

(well, the template is partially mine, I made some changes to things that I considered unbearable)

@tohecz Good work.

hey
please help me folks, I have been trying to find a soluton for a few hours now and I really need this

@hey verbatim?

hey
9:45 PM
@egreg sorry?

btw, to have a picture of how it works in such a publishing house: you get paid by a page. To be it a "considerable" job, you have to make one page in 15 minutes (including embedding in the jounral, synchonization of page numbers etc.)

@hey I mean, did you try enclosing that in \begin{verbatim} \end{verbatim}

hey
no

I tell you, this is completely ok when the article is in LaTeX and not really badly done, but with Word articles, this is very tight

hey
@egreg you are fucking genius!!!!!!! i love you!!!!! wish the very best in your life!!!!!!
3

9:47 PM
o.O

hey
wooohoooo finally
finally!!!!!!!!!!!!1

@hey ROTFLMAO

@hey hump I wrote \begin{verbatim} in an answer but you deleted the question before I posted, beware tabs though (the code you posted had tabs not spaces)

@hey now this is soooooo nicely honest!
@egreg @Paulo I added a file poster2.pdf there that is an "experimental article" for the new graphic layout I'm preparing.
and can I delete the 3 files?

@tohecz I'm dubious about the boldface numbers next to the titles in small caps.
Also about "Figure 1" in bold small caps. And the two final sections with the same style.

9:55 PM
@egreg I like small caps titles, but they seem to get "hidden" in the text, the same is for float captions
and the basic problem is that you cannot get bold small caps for lmodern
and (2) publisher wants to safe as much space as possible with acknowledgements and references, so even the titles have to be smaller

@tohecz Small caps should be slightly spaced. I don't think they are hidden.
No, I'm sure: the section numbers mustn't be boldface.

they always seemed to me that way, in both onscreen and printed versions. As well, the twocolumn layout does not add to this (with one-column layout, you can have them centered like in amsart)

The "acknowledgment" and "references" sections have a title spaced from the text above: even if its medium weight the title stands out.

@egreg sigh, I'm not that sure
I will consider adding a letter-spacing to the titles - is that what you mean by "slightly spaced" ?

@tohecz Yes.

10:02 PM
well, there's still 4 months to the issue 1/2013 to tune the design

@ℝaphink Are you still around?

@tohecz Sure. :)

@PauloCereda and what is your opinion on the new design?

user19161
Hey guys I have read the questions on which LaTeX books to get. Is there anyone here with a personal opinion on the books by Kopka and Gratzer? Hmm, I can't quite decide between the two.

@tohecz Hold on, let me check. :)
@tohecz It looks cleaner to me. :)

10:10 PM
@PauloCereda the design or the article contents? :D

@tohecz The design. :)

@PauloCereda yeah, I think so. @egreg doesn't like the bold numbers vs. midweight section titles

@JasperLoy I bought the first book by Grätzer and I didn't like it much. Never read Kopka and Daly.

user19161
@egreg Hmm OK. Anyway, any reason why you did not like it?

hey
hey again
how to remove so much whitespace in the first page at the top?

10:15 PM
@JasperLoy The material was not so well organized
@hey That depends on what document class you're using.

hey
\documentclass[12pt]{article}

@hey and you use \maketitle ?

hey
yes

@hey then the advice is: change your document class or don't use maketitle and make the title yourself

user19161
@tohecz My "advice" is, leave the whitespace alone. LaTeX is designed to look good without fiddling!

10:19 PM
@JasperLoy ehhhhm cannot agree?
IMHO the default classes don't look good unless you tweak them

user19161
@tohecz That would mean the opposite if you added "more". =)

@JasperLoy what?

user19161
@tohecz Hmm, maybe the LaTeX 3 team will take care of that?

user19161
@tohecz Cannot agree and cannot agree more mean opposite things.

yes, and I mean "cannot agree" not "cannot agree more"

10:22 PM
@hey A hack is to say \vspace*{-1in} before \maketitle. But don't do it.

LaTeX is designed to allow interesting and good things (with packages etc.), but the default layout is not my cup of tea (or glass of juice, I should not drink tea this late)

10:59 PM
@JasperLoy they will take care of that, you and everything else.

@DavidCarlisle they? I thought you were a member of the LaTeX3 team.

@Kurt I'm not sure if this works, are you around?

11:21 PM
Regarding this question tex.stackexchange.com/q/76064/3954, to me the most natural choice would be the Futurama alien alphabet: i.imgur.com/CPcj1.png

@GonzaloMedina Or tengwar. Or runic. Or hieroglyphs. :)

@egreg or Hebrew

@GonzaloMedina I do wonder sometimes:-)
@tohecz hebrew doesn't have "pile of poo" or "love hotel" I think mathematics should make more use of the symbols at unicode.org/charts/PDF/U1F300.pdf

@DavidCarlisle I suggested Dings in the original question's comments ;)
1F400-1F43E are my favourite ;)

@egreg Or that lovely cow font. :)

11:35 PM
@PauloCereda lol yes
"So let's assume that Cow D is smaller than Cow E"
3

@tohecz awww <3

@DavidCarlisle I'd vote for the implicit inclusion of "pile of poo" as a common symbol in mathematics.
4

@GonzaloMedina They (the LaTeX3 team I mean) can push it trhough ;)

@GonzaloMedina "Consider 'pile of poo'-hat as an extended function of 'pile of poo'..." :)

@PauloCereda you're so cute when you say (write) this :)

11:38 PM
@tohecz awww <3 :)

1F47C
(that's cool, you can use unicode hexes to express your mood! :) )
1F412

@tohecz that is of course exactly what they are for, that block are emoticons from the Japanese phone industry

I'm gonna give Unicode to PDFLaTeX. Glitches love Unicode. :)

Anyways, it's 1.42am and I'm on antibiotics so I should have been sleeping for several hours by now.
So good night 1F4A4

@tohecz Good night, Tom! :)
On a second thought, hieroglyphs seem cooler for math. :)

11:44 PM
night:-)

@percusse: congrats for the 3rd place in the voting squad. :)
