@leo no in fact my comment that " \em for compatibilty " wasn't really true either. \textbf is defined in terms of \bfseries \DeclareTextFontCommand{\textbf}{\bfseries} but \emph is defined in terms of \em \DeclareTextFontCommand{\emph}{\em} so \em is in fact the more basic latex command of the two.

@egreg yes, indeed at least to me seems better. The matrix itself seems weird. For what do you want a matrix of groups, or a matrix of sets even. If it denotes a sets it's fine then
