12:26 AM
@PeterGrill I was here:-) as you say, I just meant that there was nothing special about \! and any spacing could be used as it`s only a visual tweak anyway

hi all :)

@cmhughes Hi Good evening :)

@HarishKumar Good morning (?) to you sir :)

@cmhughes Exactly, it is 6.00am here. :) How was the weekend for you?

@HarishKumar pretty nice thanks :) some hiking, some eating, and some disc golf :) hoping the Oregon sunshine might stay just a little longer... how about you? :)

12:32 AM
@cmhughes It was raining all the day. Sat inside home, eating Happalam and watching rain.

@HarishKumar and on the tex exchange too? :)

@cmhughes Not fully, but yes. Had to clean the house (weekend routine), spent almost half of the day on that. It is like on and off.

@HarishKumar Happalam sounds interesting :) is it vegetarian?

12:49 AM
@cmhughes Yes. (I am a vegetarian). It is actually prepared with rice (also other varieties) Grind, make a paste and press into a thin circle (like chapathi), dry under hot sun and store. Also known as papadum. google.co.in/…

@HarishKumar sounds great :)

@cmhughes It is very tasty. Among them my favorite is papadum prepared from Jack (not) fruit.

@HarishKumar do you put anything with it, or just eat it plain?

A speciality from south (especially west coast of) India.
@cmhughes It can be eaten as such after deep frying in oil (snacks). Or can be used as a side dish for lunch.
@cmhughes Now I am living at east coast of India :( Here Jack fruit papadum is not available. So I get it parcelled by my brother. :)

@HarishKumar tastes of home are very important to me too... I have my Mum send me Marmite on a regular basis :)

12:57 AM
@cmhughes My thoughts too. BTW What is a Marmite? Vegetarian?

@HarishKumar Marmite is a savoury spread; it is vegetarian, and is in fact vegan. It's quite hard to describe- the advertising campaign is that you will either love it or hate it
@HarishKumar sorry, I have to step away for a bit- will probably be back later :) hope you have a nice day :)

@cmhughes good night Chris. :)

7 hours later…
8:16 AM
@percusse: First printed version, there's a few improvements coming for the next :-)
And @PauloCereda, the current printed cover:

8:37 AM
@ℝaphink Congratulations. It's always good to see the TeXnician's art in what is clearly a labour of love.

8:49 AM
@Brent.Longborough: Thanks :-)

@ℝaphink <3

@Brent.Longborough: The books I edit are indeed labors of love. I'm very picky :-)

9:14 AM
@ℝaphink It seems very nice! Congratulations!

Thank you @egreg.

Q: empty first reference

Kits89The first reference in the bibliography of my article is empty. There are no references left and the second should be the first. When I compile the article it doesn't give me any error message. I've found some explanation in this site but I don't see any weird thing in my packages. I only use: \...

9:53 AM
@ℝaphink Great job! :)

Thanks @PauloCereda

Friends, to the guns!

Q: xkcd style graphs

Amatya I hope this is not considered an inappropriate question. I received an email to which I wanted to respond with a xkcd-style graph, but I couldn't manage it. Everything I drew looked perfect, and I don't have enough command over Plot Legends to have these pieces of text floating around. Any tips...

Note the lovely charts typeset in Comic Sans.

@ℝaphink Wow, looks fantastic. Is that a QED symbol at the end of the line? Great !
@PauloCereda We did that already here a few times :)

@percusse They can hear us. :P

@PauloCereda Most of them are from Math.SE so I'll rather not get involved in this. They are still angry at me for deleting my account :P

10:08 AM
@percusse: if you mean the little square under the hrule, then I'm afraid it's an overfullbox because I forgot to turn them off when printing this copy ;-)

@ℝaphink Oh I'm stealing that anyhow heheh....

haha

@ℝaphink oops. :)

@ℝaphink There shouldn't be an overfull box there!

I'm dying...

10:18 AM
@egreg Right, but there is. Probably my code is not that great ;-)

@percusse LOL

10:43 AM
Question: should I keep watching a PowerPoint presentation in which the author included a lot of "fancy" sounds for every single element transition? :)

@PauloCereda you can keep watching, just stop listening.

@ℝaphink :)

11:40 AM
Not that I'm expecting anyone here to be able to answer, but I expect it would be useful for us generally to know what the official answer is:

Q: Where should questions about MathJaX go?

Andrew StaceyI'm asking this from the perspective of the TeX-SX site. Basically, we don't want them unless they are really questions about TeX and not about MathJaX. In particular, questions about configuring MathJaX, about installing MathJaX, and about how to do something particular in MathJaX, are all off...

2

12:03 PM
@AndrewStacey Good plan

@AndrewStacey It's a good question, without a good answer. Depending on the exact nature of a MathJax-related question, I could imagine it being appropriate here, or on SO, or on webapps, or even on superuser. I don't know what it is, but have I detected, on SO itself, a certain unpleasant hardening of attitudes?
... not to mention a certain laziness in classifying "problem questions" (eg flag to close rather than flag to migrate, which requires more thought and writing)?

@Brent.Longborough Yes, I'd agree

@Brent.Longborough well SO has the distinct advantage over the other stackexchange sites that Davide picks up mathjax tagged questions there. Since he wrote the thing getting an answer from him is better than not getting an answer, usually:-)

@DavidCarlisle That's very true. Is there some way we can migrate them back when they get here?

@Brent.Longborough I thought if something was migrated here and our mods closed it on sight it automatically went back, but I know nothing really about site operation.

12:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Hrnrn, I pass on that one :)

@Brent: ooh Trello accepts embedded videos. :)

@PauloCereda Doan u darez!

@Brent.Longborough Sorry I couldn't resist. :) (in the BOM card) :)
@Brent.Longborough: On a moar seriouz note, could we rename "Trello Usage Notes" to "Announcements"? I was thinking of adding some notes about stuff there. :)

@PauloCereda Go!

@Brent.Longborough Danke! :)

12:46 PM
@DavidCarlisle : "Note that doing this with tabularx rather than tabular* makes TeX work 10000000 times harder. It maybe that with today's machine speeds you don't care anymore, but...." : Yes, of course, but I think the end result is easier for a noob to grasp.
@DavidCarlisle : BTW, is the same true of tabu?
Trouble with tabu is "I hate the syntax"

1:01 PM
@JosephWright I've added the link to the MathJaX forums to the text building blocks' quick links section.

@Brent.Longborough Not to speak about the documentation.

@DavidCarlisle : Actually, I'd go further than that. I love TeX, but quite often I find myself thinking "the solution is disproportionately complex when compared to the problem".
It's almost like writing Assembler LOL
@PauloCereda : Nice announcement! BTBS!

@AndrewStacey Great

1:16 PM
@PauloCereda Actually, one could interpret that as a Done, rather than an Announcement

@egreg Indeed

@JosephWright @egreg Guys, I really didn't want to start a tabu auto-da-fé. :) I really admire anyone who can get their head round "How to do tables"

@Brent.Longborough Fine with me. :) Feel free to move teh card. :)

@PauloCereda Don't mind. U Chuze
@PauloCereda You didn't ask what BTBS means!

@Brent.Longborough oops! What does BTBS mean? :)

1:29 PM
@PauloCereda Bet That Breaks Something

Hey, Torquemada, whaddaya say?
I just got back from the auto-da-fé
Auto-da-fé, what's an auto-da-fé?
It's what you oughtn't to do but you do anyway
@Brent.Longborough LOL I read the changelog carefully. :) It's just a bugfix release. They ain't like those crazy arara guys, which break stuff from version to version. :)

@PauloCereda I've just realised, English speakers may not understand that...
@PauloCereda Loony Polly, Loony Polly

@Brent.Longborough It's from a Mel Brooks song. :)

@PauloCereda Hrnrn erudite stuff

If you guys don't mind, could you let me know if there's any way I can improve the way I'm writing this: github.com/Gnintendo/Art-History-Study-Guide/blob/master/…

1:32 PM

I'm still learning TeX, so all criticism is appreciated
you can see the compiled document at gabmedia.org/ArtStudyGuide.pdf

@Brent.Longborough yes (I'd guess so, never looked that deeply at that)

Q: Create xkcd style diagram in TeX

AlexanderThe unique style of the diagrams at xkcd has an informative but nice hand-drawn touch. I guess they are actually drawn by hand but just recently on our partner site for Mathematica someone asked how to draw a similar diagram such as this one with Mathematica's plot functions (xkcd-style-graphs). ...

slow motion noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
:)

@DavidCarlisle OK. Just out of interest (before I migrate), presumably tabulary is "similarly qualified". Do you get as scared with tabulary as with tabularx?

Besides, I suspect it's a duplicate.

1:43 PM
@PauloCereda Best answer to that is to point them to L-systems, then they'll go away for a year or so :)

@Brent.Longborough LOL that's very evil. :)

@PauloCereda Wuah - ha - ha

@Brent.Longborough well both of them make tex work hard (tabularx harder as it takes more runs) tabular* just uses the tex primitive tabcolsep so it's essentially free wheeras tx and ty first have to parse at the macro layer to grab the environment body and then reset multiple tables as trial runs to get the spacing right.

@DavidCarlisle OK, that's what I guessed. Personally, I find tabularx very useful (¡Thank you!), and well worth the additional gigawatt-hours
... but I might just migrate to tabulary. Maybe I should persuade Lars to build tabulary into memoir, as well.

@Brent.Longborough yes it's always the same someone was asking me the other day if they should hold off some code going live in a public project as there was still lots of improvements that could be made, I argued that he'd worry about the things that could be done better but everybody else would just be happy to see something working at all.....

1:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle True. Ship early, ship often...

@Brent.Longborough you might (not sure how memoir does these things) want to change the top layer slightly TY grabs the array column names L R C that's OK if you choose to load the package but hard to do by default without clashing

TikZ'ers: is it possible to add random steps to a plot in order to simulate a jittering line? :)
Then the xkcd stuff is solved. :)

@Brent.Longborough yes it's just when you have security concerns and 300 million users, you don't want to ship too early.

@DavidCarlisle It looks like he cut-and-pasted (with a nice acknowledgement to your goodself, of course)
@DavidCarlisle Right, I was thinking "open-source book", rather than "proprietary banking app"

@percusse: fantastic answer! :D

2:04 PM
@PauloCereda Thank y.... Hey you had the same idea bah, .... I should have waited.

@Gnintendo: Do you really want to keep a CM for an art study guide?

@percusse I had no idea if it was possible to apply that to a pgfplot. :)

Sorry, I just wanted to stop it before it becomes massive :( I\ve spoiled the fun I guess.

@Gnintendo: You might really want to make a higher level command to include your images instead of always redefining \arttag and calling the same series of macros.
@Gnintendo: Much easier, no?

@ℝaphink Something like this?
\newcommand{\artsection}[1]{%
 \sectiontitle{#1}
 \begin{figure}[H]
 \centering
 \adjustimage{min size={\textwidth}{.7\textheight},max size={\textwidth}{.7\textheight}}{#1}
 \caption{The \citetitle{#1} tomb painting \autocite{wiki:#1}.}
 \label{fig:#1}
 \end{figure}
}

2:17 PM
@egreg: Too late, already posted :-)

So that \artsection{kouros} will do?

@DavidCarlisle I've tried to put a punchline but tooltips are not working apparently.

@egreg: I called it \art, but that's pretty much the same.
@Gnintendo: Added a nicer font

@ℝaphink My macro name is better. :)

@percusse :-)

2:18 PM
@egreg: yes, it is!

with apologies to @percusse. :)

@PauloCereda Apologies refused. Switching to Rage with envy mode.

@percusse Oh no! To the Delorean! :)
Now enters future Paulo to prevent present Paulo to post the image

2:22 PM
Now we need Papagena!

@PauloCereda OK let me make something up for the axes. I can't let Mathematica people win. :P I have 10 more mins for Matlab

@percusse You are my hero. :)
@egreg From M. Ozart! :)
(cf. Borge) :P

2:40 PM
I can't make the Humor Sans font work for some reason.

@percusse: with which engine?

@ℝaphink XeLaTeX

Works for me

@ℝaphink I don't know why but maybe Win 7 is doing stupid stuff again. If I look at the font properties it says Humor Sans Regular_1.ttf though I didn't have it previously.

Ah, Windows :Þ

2:48 PM
hehehe

@DavidCarlisle Just switched a fairly large, important document from tabularx to tabulary. Without grief (after I remembered the \usepackage).

What's the use case of Windows nowadays? :-)

@ℝaphink "It came with my PC"?

Yep it was the dash in between Humor-Sans

@Brent.Longborough: Did LaTeX come with your PC, too? You know how to pick the best tool for your tasks :-)

2:50 PM
@ℝaphink It comes with a Windows so that you can get a feeling on how to format a HDD.

@ℝaphink Trouble is, I have a lot of legacy stuff that doesn't work with Wine

@Brent.Longborough like what? (I'm curious)
@percusse Just insert a CD/USB key and press next until it's installed? :-)

@ℝaphink Microsoft Money

@ℝaphink That's a good feeling.

Note: I realize LaTeX users are not necessarily free software advocates, since there's no real alternative in the proprietary world.

2:52 PM
@Brent.Longborough That's not legacy that's heritage.

@Brent.Longborough There's other software that do the same job just as well.

@ℝaphink Oh? For example?

Grisbi, kmymoney?

Am I the only one who loves the Gentoo/Slackware installer? :)
Quicken! :D /ducks

@PauloCereda: do you mean installing from another distro in a chroot? :-)

2:55 PM
@ℝaphink Never tried grisbi. kmymoney doesn't do the job for me. Plus, migration is very difficult

(last time I installed a gentoo, that's how it went)

@ℝaphink Depends on the stage you decide to go for. :)

heh
I switched to Ubuntu in 2006 and never changed :-)

@ℝaphink I'm a free software advocate, provided it's better than the alternatives. I've been a Linux Mint user, but I've always found the (screen) font rendering lacking something - I find the Windows 7 desktop experience "better" than Gnome or Kde

@Brent.Longborough Similar situation here

2:58 PM
@ℝaphink What I's really like to use is OpenBSD, but that's a lot of really hard work

@Brent.Longborough Work = Windows

@JosephWright 'Fraid so

Yes, that too

Since 2005 my machine runs on Fedora (It was RH and Slackware before), though I still have a notebook with Slackware. :)
@Brent.Longborough ooh that one is punk. :) I love FreeBSD. :)

@Brent.Longborough For me, not just what is on the PC (I have a VM for Ubunutu), but also the various specialist programs I need. Wine does not 'cut' it: I have tried

3:00 PM
init 5 pffff.

@PauloCereda I have my home firewall, DNS, and postgresql server on a box running OpenBSD

@Brent.Longborough Neat!

@JosephWright The other thing I find really annoying (and terminally interfering) is the difficulty I have getting file permissions right when sharing between Win 7 and Linux over samba and also with rsync. I know it might be Windows' fault, but I just haven't got the time or patience, or even the skill to sort it out. So, as the family depend on me for backup and tech support, that's it!
@PauloCereda It's great. I route doubleclick to 0.0.0.0
@PauloCereda And everything at home has its own little name. My phone is Marconi, my kindle Borges, and so on
@PauloCereda I'm writing to you from "oppenheimer.hightor.".

@Brent.Longborough OMG! :)

... 'cos there are occasionally large explosions

3:06 PM
LOL
I'm writing from Herakompolis. :)
Older machines here are Egypt-related. Newer ones are UK-based. :)
@Brent: Of course, my dad's machine breaks my awesome naming scheme by having "Interlagos". :) Maybe in the future, I opt for choosing F1 courses, but how am I suppose to name a machine "Spa-Francorchamps"? :)

@PauloCereda Take a look. Have you ever seen anything so ridiculous?:

@Brent.Longborough OMG epic! :)

@PauloCereda As you can see, the general idea was "scientists", but a few exceptions crept in, like "pimbo"
@PauloCereda I'm especially pleased with "hawking", for obvious reasons

3:24 PM
@Brent.Longborough :)

3:42 PM
Joining a chat room succeed. Thank you Balpha!

@GarbageCollector Yeah. What was up?
@GarbageCollector Oh, I see: 'not your fault' :-)

@Joseph: thank you , it is not your fault as well. :-)

4:02 PM
@Joseph's machine name: palladium. :)

@PauloCereda My office machine is called prospero. Time ago we had a server in a black cubic case: I named it caliban. :)

@egreg How nice! :) Speaking of which, I had one machine named shakespeare. :)
And dostoyevsky too. :)

@PauloCereda The two machines in the student laboratory (the faculty was at its beginning and we were poor) were called romeo and juliet, for easy to guess reasons. :)

@egreg Lovely! :) How did you name the firewall, capulet or montague? :)

@PauloCereda I'm afraid there was no firewall at the times. ;-)

4:13 PM
@egreg oops. :)
My netbook is called hamunaptra and it's a reference to the fictional city in the movie The Mummy, but it seems to be a real city in India. :)

A: Boolean based environments

parnmattI have been using @MarcoDaniel for a while now, but decided to try and make it more my own, using more LaTeX then TeX code. I have complicated it a bit, to make it more general so that I can have multiple environment working in a similar way, DRY programming, etc.. But It's not working, and I w...

I wouldn't qualify this entry as an answer, I think it's better to be posted as a follow-up question. :)

It seems that I've got a lodging finally! :)

@tohecz Yay! :)

@PauloCereda as well, a sentence "I have been using @MarcoDaniel for a while now" with no context sounds really strange...

@tohecz That too. :)

Well, I should go back to the other place, I will spend a night there and move the rest of my things tommorow.

4:47 PM
@PauloCereda OK, a new science is born: computing node onomastics

@Brent.Longborough LOL
Those guys think of everything. :)

@PauloCereda I bet Dostoyevsky was always refusing to boot, because you couldn't give him his proper name in utf-8 : Достое́вский

@Brent.Longborough Pretty Polly! :) I have no idea how to type that. :) And let's face, the Portuguese version "Dostoiévski" is not cool. :)

@PauloCereda That range has lots of good characters I want to use this as a variable name

@DavidCarlisle LOL

4:52 PM
@DavidCarlisle I think that refers to a complete font family! (C*m*c S*ns)
@PauloCereda Easy, really: Wikipedia -> Russian Wikipedia -> Cut -> Paste

@Brent.Longborough ooh! :)

@PauloCereda What, did you think I reconfigured my keyboard?!

@Brent.Longborough You don't need to reconfigure your keyboard, AFAIK your keyboard has everything mapped. :)

@PauloCereda Nope, only ISO-8859-1 ∪ ISO-8859-9
Why don't entities get converted!?

damn missed a palindrome by 1, not easy to get -1 I think...
@Brent.Longborough I seem to recall they do on the main site but not here

4:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle I knew it was your fault :)
3

@Brent.Longborough LOL
@DavidCarlisle: is your 5-hour keynote ready? :)

@PauloCereda Somebody might prefer the old orthography: Ѳедоръ Михайловичъ Достоевскій

@Brent.Longborough of course if you were a happy windows user you can enter any unicode character directly (if you have a numeric keypad which I dont:-)
@PauloCereda I believe someone said here in chat the other day that the journey to the meeting was the ideal time for preparing a talk

@egreg Uh-oh. :)
@DavidCarlisle Patrick. :P

@DavidCarlisle Really? I know how to do any ASCII character, but Unicode?. Are you sure you don't even have a virtual numeric keypad?

5:03 PM
@PauloCereda In 1917 some letters were abolished: Ѳ and і, for instance. The former is derived from the Greek theta, but the letter came to be pronounced like Ф (that is, F). This explains why the English Theodore corresponds to the Russian Fjodor.

@PauloCereda Actually I'm not sure where it is but if it's in Oxford I'm driving and it will take less than half an hour, so it might be a bit short on slides.
@Brent.Longborough not that I can see, at least there are no numbers above the letters for the fn key instructions are here:

@egreg Ah interesting. :)
@DavidCarlisle I heard there might be sandwiches. :)

I was planning to talk about all the things wrong with longtable, if anyone wants to contribute any slides.....

@PauloCereda Other letters had already been abolished in the 18th century IIRC

@DavidCarlisle Cool

5:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh, gosh. I think I'll stick to cut-and-paste from Wikipedia
@DavidCarlisle Where do you park in Oxford? My impression is one of great hostility to the Motorist

@egreg Our language didn't have any changes in the letters, except for a recent abolition of the diaeresis in Portuguese words - an abomination! :(

@DavidCarlisle Is the Pork-and-Ride a viable proposition?

@Brent.Longborough I might just park here and get the bus (or the park and ride which is just up the road)

@DavidCarlisle Oh dear, so I'm sort of right?

@Brent.Longborough actually I'm not sure where the meeting is, must check...

5:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle Trinity, I think. @JosephWright ?

@Brent.Longborough Correct

@DavidCarlisle That's OK, then, we just park in the middle of Broad Street
@JosephWright Thank you

@Brent.Longborough well yes it depends, you can park on broad street / st giles if it's not too full but if it is busy then it might be easier to dump the car and take the bus like it says on all the road signs coming in:-)

When visiting UK, this will be the soundtrack I'll have in my iPod: youtube.com/watch?v=25zynTTl-sU

@JosephWright It's nearly fifty years since I was in Trinity; is the entrance in Broad St, or does one have to go up Park Road and in the side?
@DavidCarlisle I was sort of jesting. I remember getting hauled up before the Junior Proctor for parking my car in the City Centre

5:13 PM
@Brent.Longborough Broad Street
@DavidCarlisle I'll be park-and-riding unless I take the bike and park-and-cycle

@JosephWright Sort of between Balliol and Blackwells?

@Brent.Longborough Yes

And of course, if I end up in that epic ferris wheel, I want to have this soundtrack: youtube.com/watch?v=Ii1tc493bZM

@Brent.Longborough well st giles is a viable option most of the time

@DavidCarlisle During the day waiting is limited to a few hours
(Pay and Display)

5:19 PM
@JosephWright OK, so I guess it's Seacourt P&R, hop off at the corner of St Aldate's, then High St and Turl St

I'm really tempted to flag this answer as NAA

A: What is the status of generating LaTeX from handwriting (i.e., OCR)?

plutonHow about reading your notes and use speech recognition ? That would be an alternative to OCR.

@DavidCarlisle I remember the last time I visited Oxford I almost soiled myself trying to move the car every two hours or so...

@Brent.Longborough I guess: I come from the other side of the city, so Peartree (or Water Eaton)

But then again it's really funny. (even though it's not meant to be)

... as well as spending a fortune

5:20 PM
@Brent.Longborough Had similar 'fun' at a conference earlier in the year. Turned out to be easiest to parks at the P&R and leave the car for a couple of days

@JosephWright Yes, walking from St Aldate's to Trinity and back won't kill me
@JosephWright They ought to provide a special pass for those who do typesetting
@JosephWright Is there still a toll bridge at Swinford?

This can be closed as "Too Localized"? (see comments to my answer, particularly the last one): tex.stackexchange.com/q/74912/3954

5:41 PM
@ℝaphink Yes, reviewing your changes now

@Brent.Longborough: Did you know the recent changes got rid of the diaresis? We can't say "tranqüilo" anymore. :(

@ℝaphink Hmm, (by the way, I plan to start using arara so other people know how they need to compile it...)

@PauloCereda Yes, I did know. Completely ridiculous. But I insist on continuing to say tranqüilo

@Brent.Longborough Me too. :)

@PauloCereda I expect they'll be abolishing acute accents soon. I wonder what they'll do about cágado

5:48 PM
@Brent.Longborough LOL we all be \removeaccent(cágado} then. :P

@PauloCereda Oh, BTW, one likes to spell it "diaræsis"

@Brent.Longborough Show-off. :)

@PauloCereda Yep, and there won't be enough to go round...

@Brent.Longborough Indeed.

@ℝaphink I like it, I'll try it later. Thanks for looking over it!

5:52 PM
@PauloCereda The thing that really annoyed me about the Reforma Orthográfica was that it destroys the one-to-one mapping from spelling to pronunciation. Essential for any gringo

@Brent.Longborough Indeed. Things got worse. :(

@PauloCereda If we typographers were in charge, it would all be different
