@AlexG No. For once it's directly generating PDF instructions, so without the PDF backend it's unclear what it would even do. But the implementation also relies on Lua based virtual fonts which are don't exists in DVI mode.

@yo' But some opinions are less frequent than others ;). No serious book publisher issues books in A5 for its plumpness. Try to find one in your bookshelf. 2:3 is narrower and thus much more elegant.

@AlexG yeah, with the exceptions of all the books I have that are square etc. Btw, 3:2 is just a very tiny bit away from \sqrt2, so when you start binding, you can hardly tell which was the original paper. Bookmakes do cut the final bound stocks before adding the covers to make sure everything is even, and then they can do anything they want. Us "normal people", we have to stick to some reasonable standards, and A5 is a reasonable standard.

(btw, I'm just about to print a booklet that will be 148x148mm, cut from an A5. But I'm maybe one of the not so many people in the world who has the sort of equpment to do that.)

when we printed our wedding invitations and cut them and everything, everyone was thinking we let a printershop do it :D

make4ht is really quite amazing. With just a few small tweaks I now have online documentation for my thesis class generated directly from the .tex source that also produces the PDF.

@barbarabeeton I would say they’re semi-general but I really don’t have enough grasp of how it all works to write an article. It’s mainly mapping bits of CSS to any latex markup that is not part of stuff done by major packages.
