@samcarter v3.0.44

1 hour later…
8:44 AM
@UlrikeFischer ooh

@gusbrs Well, proprietary isn't really an option for me. And I don't think I've tested any other OCR software either. Thank you for your reply. Are you currently idling in Chat?

@JosephWright yeah!
So mean! Only a couple of votes before a nice palindrome, people migrated an accepted answer to the main site :( Now I'm in the 6 cycle intended of the 1 cycle :(

9:00 AM
@samcarter Argh

@JosephWright Feature request: migration should not increase rep

9:14 AM
@samcarter just downvote enough of @egreg's answers to get back on the right cycle

9:26 AM
@DavidCarlisle why not serial downvote all your questions :P

@samcarter that would be a very mean thing to do (and wouldn't have the desired effect anyway)

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle :D

@FaheemMitha For me neither. :-) I can tell you I'm satisfied with tesseract results. Of course, not "perfect" (is OCR ever?), but usually pretty good.

9:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle how can it be mean if it doesn't have an effect?

@UlrikeFischer "it's the thought that counts"

10:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle ooh it's the count that thoughts
oh wait
oh no

10:25 AM
@DavidCarlisle ... so can I serial upvote all your question? :)

cis
@UlrikeFischer @DavidCarlisle

First of all sorry for my freak out.

So this ( https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/60255466#60255466 ) is a simple test example for one of my possible chess problems.

Of course I could quickly get the look with TikZ.
For the loop solution, however, I think it makes sense to do it with a professional chess package.
Or not?

I can't quickly reprogram the parser of chessboard.sty.

What would have interested me in principle:

1. Is it possibly easier?

10:50 AM
@samcarter I would have expected that you had already upvoted all my questions.

cis
I can tell you why. Because a subject-specific package should be able to handle applications of any nature.

It's a bit strange when even small changes result in massive hacks or the like.

@DavidCarlisle Oh, that's true. I just checked and they are all upvoted

cis
That is forbidden! Someone licked all my TikZ posts and then it got reset because of "chain vote".
So you are a criminal. :/ :()

@cis I can't understand your assumptions here at all! A package that is written for a specific game can encode the rules of the game this means that the package can handle many details for the author. If you use it for a different game then if it works that is lucky and useful, if it doesn't work then as you have broken the basic design assumptions of the package that is to be expected.

@cis If you try to upvote a question by @DavidCarlisle, you may get it. ;-)

11:04 AM
@cis That's an intrinsic property of specialised packages. Take an all-round package like tikz. It makes all task moderately difficult, but you can adapt it to everything. On the other hand, if you have a very specialised package, it makes the specific task it is designed for incredibly easy, but it gets very difficult if you want to so non-standard things.
@cis I think I get a free get-out-of-jail card for this particular crime :)

@samcarter ooh do we have a monopoly package?
2

@DavidCarlisle don't give me ideas :)

@PauloCereda The jail icon is awesome!

@samcarter it's outdated, sadly. Maybe some... organisation... could create a new board. :) /wink wink nudge nudge say no more

11:10 AM
@PauloCereda Can I please buy the beamer street?
@PauloCereda :D

@samcarter yes of course! <3

@samcarter I'm using your monopoly package to typeset games of cluedo, it doesn't have easy commands to typeset the murder weapons, could you please fix that?
2

@DavidCarlisle ooh teh guilty party

@DavidCarlisle sure, but you have to promise not to play angry birds with it :)

11:45 AM
Hi, 'morning (late)! Is anybody able to access the matrix matrix.to/#/#tug:matrix.org ? I keep having a connection reset error, no idea if there is a firewall in the middle (but it used to work)

@gusbrs So, do you normally idle in Chat? Or would it be better if we exchanged email addresses, so I can reach you if I have further questions?

@Rmano works for me

@samcarter Strange. No way here. Will try from home later.

@PauloCereda Oh, so nice!

12:01 PM
@mickep ooh

12:11 PM
@FaheemMitha As I told you, I'm usually around, so I'll get the ping eventually. And yes, if you have your email public somewhere, I can send you mine. It is probably best, since we are straying a little off-topic on this thread. ;-)

@gusbrs You can email me at faheem at faheem dot info. I don't think you'd be easily able to find it otherwise. Please send me an email and I'll save it. Thanks.
I don't think scanning is so off topic, though. Perhaps mildly so.

@FaheemMitha Done. And, yeah, just a little.

@gusbrs Thank you.

@FaheemMitha If you are scanning duck pictures, it is definitely on topic :)

@samcarter No ducks here. Just boring text stuff.

12:37 PM
@samcarter I've heard that "ADF scanner" stands for "automatic duck feeder".

cis
@PauloCereda Is this a package or just a graphic?

@cis image

@gusbrs :P Can we get one with cookies?

@samcarter I don't know, mine is just a simple one. ;)
@samcarter Btw, you were right the French are quite fierce and proud in language issues. And, to my surprise, there's also some degree of internal dissent on the "best/correct form".

12:56 PM
@samcarter ooh

@gusbrs Each nation needs something to form their identity, some nations are proud of their tea, some of their language and some of their lack of inter word spaces :)
2

@samcarter ooh das Deutschewortheritage

@samcarter :) Better tea and lackofinterwordspacing than soccer.

@PauloCereda <3

@gusbrs YES THIS

12:58 PM
@PauloCereda :-)

@gusbrs Thankfully I chose the right team. :)

@gusbrs Agreed, it is totally silly to throw a ball on the floor when using your hands is much more entertaining -- says the handball player :)

@PauloCereda It seems the same as mine. The "outside team"?

@gusbrs You lost me, but anyway. :)
We ducks are good at sensorial geolocation

@samcarter :-)
@PauloCereda I meant I don't cheer for any team. But with time I've discovered this is too heretical a statement. So, nowadays, when asked, I say I cheer for the "Tupi", which is a small C series team here from JF. And people just fall silent about it, which is the desired effect.

1:07 PM
@gusbrs That's good tatics! My team is Palmeiras, but I must admit I don't follow sports that much. I used to enjoy these games way more in the past. My dad says that once a team goes professional, things get out of hand, it's all about money. I love watching games from unknown teams, the more amateur the better!

@PauloCereda You can follow Tupi's games then. :-)

@gusbrs :) It's green jersey, right? So from a categorical perspective there might be an arrow from Palmeiras to Tupi. :D
We ducks are very good at maths. :)

@PauloCereda I have no idea. :D

@gusbrs ooh a mystery :D

@PauloCereda Just like the names of the players, and whether they've won their latest match. ;-)

1:15 PM
@gusbrs Schröedinger meets football :)

@PauloCereda :)

@PauloCereda making sure the umlaut is there? ;-) Its either Schrödinger or Schroedinger.

@UlrikeFischer oopsie :)

2:21 PM
Back in the 1 cycle, another accepted answer got migrated :)

1 hour later…
3:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle More tractable colour stuff for you to look at ;)

@JosephWright boo

@gusbrs I do something similar. People here mostly watch UK soccer teams so if they ask I say my team is QPR because a character in a TV show I love follows them. XD

@JosephWright yes just saw
@JosephWright did you see my mathcolor answer yesterday? (OP didn't like the math only \mathcolor:-)
\begingroup ... \endgroup seems to be exactly what I was looking for, thank you! (The second solution does not work for me, because I do want to use \typo in non-math mode as well. -- or would I still be able to do so??) — Anna 15 hours ago

3:49 PM
@Plergux ooh

@DavidCarlisle the xcolor PR is still open isn't it?

@UlrikeFischer er yes sorry had other things on my mind:-)

@DavidCarlisle no problem ;-)

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright mathcolor email coming up...

4:05 PM
@PauloCereda -- That slide should really end in a pool. What's at the bottom now isn't even padded!

@barbarabeeton oopsie :)

@barbarabeeton or an oven

@DavidCarlisle -- No. Now you're acting like the witch in Hansel and Gretel.

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@barbarabeeton I'm imagining a theatrical production where the witch is trying to persuade Hensel and Gretel to use a slide ;-) I wonder if the children could resist.

4:15 PM
@UlrikeFischer -- It would probably be pretty tempting! (Remember -- fairy tales are pretty Grimm! Sorry about that.)
5

@Plergux First time I hear about QPR, and I already like it. ;-)

2 hours later…

6:07 PM
@UlrikeFischer So maybe you can tell me something about my 3 questions at the end?
<---- https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/60258771#60258771

6:53 PM
What's with this crappy new layout? It's even worse than before and I didn't think that was possible after they forced the network-wide layout on us.

7:19 PM
@HenriMenke it's called progress, but if you never look at the site home page, and have a user css that restyles the whole site anyway it's not too bad

@HenriMenke cough ... userscript ... cough

^^^ how to get rid of one gold badge?

@samcarter get 10 more? (congrats by the way)

@barbarabeeton / @DavidCarlisle: I guess I should thank one of you for tex.stackexchange.com/a/631341/52406

@mickep not me:-)

@DavidCarlisle thx :)

7:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Is that the truth or a lie? :P

@mickep every word you read on this site is true

@DavidCarlisle gnnnnhhhh

7:40 PM
@PauloCereda The GO! field will produce Missing $ inserted.

@mickep -- Nor me. All I did was read the DEK report in TUGboat to make sure everything was spelled correctly and verbs agreed with subjects. (But I did forward the question to Karl, which caused him to research and post the answer)

@barbarabeeton Well, thanks then for the forwarding :)

8:08 PM
Hi, I want to typeset a project plan and need nice ideas how to typeset the required months per team. I had the idea to try something like
I tried around, but unfortunately it was very painful to get something which was not even close to the result. Do you have any suggestions?
it should work in overleaf with koma and pdflatex

@JonasStein And a simple tabular with A, B, C, D in the header wouldn't do?

can I set bg colors in tabular?

@JonasStein Yes, maybe not easily like in the picture. (But do you need that style? I do not think it makes it easier to read)

@JonasStein Try the new package tabularray, much easier to manage the colors

@CarLaTeX that one looks good thank you

8:17 PM
@JonasStein classically colortbl package but tabularray probably better these days

@JonasStein You're welcome

what is the best trick to get it on the right border in the same line of the sections? Should I use \hflll ?

@JonasStein that or set the whole page as a 7 column table

would
wouldn't this cause problems with line breaks and page breaks?

@JonasStein longtable would allow page breaks

8:58 PM
Do you have alternative ideas to visualize it even better/different from my painted solution?

@HenriMenke oopsie :)
