@samcarter beamer off to CTAN

@JosephWright ooh

9:08 AM
@JosephWright Thanks! And also for your mail -- interesting stuff to read over coffee!

@samcarter :)
@PauloCereda :)

2 hours later…
11:13 AM
@JosephWright I discovered a thing and I do not know if it's operator error...
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{siunitx}
\DeclareSIUnit{\mgl}{\milli\gram\per\liter}
\begin{document}
\qty{10}{\mgl} ok!

\qty{10}{\ohm\per\mgl} ?

\qty{10}{\ohm\per{\mgl}} ?

\qty{10}{\ohm\per(\mgl)} nice!
\end{document}
I supposed that the \Declare... would count as an automatic grouping of the defined unit, it seems it's not the case...
(BTW, seems the same in v2 and v3, so it's operator error for sure)

@UlrikeFischer I breaked it down to the current main-problem, see comment here: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/630888/chessboard-creating-and-positioning-a-red-king-new-piece/630890#630890

This seems to me as a alignment with hardcore LaTeX submissions.
I don't know enough about that.
If that were a pgf thing, I would probably only have to say align=center somewhere or that would be the default anyway.

@cis even with pgf you would have to fiddle with the alignment. Symbols for boards and symbols for running text have different requirements regarding their dimensions.

@Rmano Operator error: there's no grouping of units in siunitx at all, so when you do \per<some-combined-unit> you are just applying \per to whatever comes first

Well, the chessboard package has a pleasant syntax for moving across chessboards, as long as you use the default.

As soon as one wants to customize any little things, it is in my opinion only suitable for full professionals.

@cis well chessboard is for (western) chess, if you want to play pirate games on it, then yes you will have to adapt things.

cis
Eh, I'm talking about working with the package and its syntax, and that's anything but easy or self-explanatory here.

Otherwise, I just want to create a chess puzzle, and I need a black king, a white king, and a red king.

1:18 PM
@cis well it is a rather large package with a long documentation. So yes, you won't master it in 10 minutes. And if you only need colored kings, then why don't you color the existing kings?

@JosephWright Perfect, as I supposed! Thanks.

cis
@UlrikeFischer Look, I need a kind of need this.
I can create that relatively quickly in TikZ.

But now, to solve the puzzle, I need a package with a simple syntax to show the 11 moves one after the other.
E.g. in a loop.

Chessboard is very well suited for this. However, the smallest deviation from the standard quickly turns the package into a nightmare.

@cis sorry but if you think it is a nightmare: don't use it, use something else and stop to bother me.
@PhelypeOleinik @PauloCereda @samcarter texlive has sillywalk-map.pdf in the doc folder ....

1:59 PM
All right, I will shut up.
The more I do there, the more construction sites I open.

For example, one cannot simply write somewhere as a test

\chessboard[whiteonwhitepiecemaskcolor=blue]
(or similar)

It is probably completely clear that this has no effect at all and certainly only works in connection with various tricks that require decades of LaTeX experience.
Yes, my mistake...

2:17 PM
@UlrikeFischer oopsie, wrote to Karl, thanks :)

@PauloCereda I saw the authors ;-)

@UlrikeFischer <3
@UlrikeFischer I am sure Gert will be pleased with the references. :)

@cis When things become complex like those, I normally end up writing a python script that generates the LaTeX. (I know, I should learn Lua). Often it's the easier way.

cis
@Rmano I want to make my document easy and not more difficult. :()
When the magic fairy comes, I wish for a package "pgfchess"...

For understanding: TikZ, pgfplots(table), tcolorbox is all intuitively understandable and largely self-explanatory for me.

At chessboard, nothing is opening up for me right now. I copy something from the manual and it gives errors or has no effect.
Hehe, yeah awesome...

! Undefined control sequence.
l.93 \newchessgame

It has to be like this! It's clear, isn't it?
But I wanted to shut up...

2:47 PM
Nice quote:
> Ulrike, patron saint of TeXers in distress, who deserves a statue, a monument, a shrine…

@cis page 3 of the documentation, below the "attention". And yes: I do expect people to read a documentation. chessboard is not intuitive and you can't use it by simply copying an example without reading the surrounding text. It has some unusual concepts and fonts aren't a trivial subject in pdflatex either. Use something else.

3:03 PM
@PauloCereda Gert „lend me a quid till Thursday“ Fischer is pleased

@UlrikeFischer ooh <3

cis
chessboard is without alternative.
(according to CTAN/chess)

@cis you showed an example with tikz, so you have an alternative, you only need to extend it. Should much easier than using my package.

cis
3:19 PM
But there, I do not have

`\chessboard[setpieces={Ke1, qe2, kf3}]`

4:05 PM
@UlrikeFischer you have mail. :)

@PauloCereda saw it ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh
@UlrikeFischer feature requests from Gert, surely <3

4:29 PM
@Rmano it's more fun to write a tex script that generates python

@DavidCarlisle hmmm... :-O

4:43 PM
@samcarter I'm sure he meant to say: I blame @UlrikeFischer for breaking multicol

@DavidCarlisle multiple columns are a good starting point to build a monument :)

@samcarter but with some missing, it may fall down

@DavidCarlisle ooh London bridge is falling down

5:17 PM
@MarcelKrüger is there an luaotfload update waiting? There is a remark from Robert on the mainsite about something in the dev version regarding microtype.

5:28 PM
Random question... @UlrichDiez have you ever considered making package out of some macros? Copy pasting code all the time is not necessarily nice.
// applies to other people too but this one in particular seems to have a comprehensive personal library

5:39 PM

5:50 PM
@UlrikeFischer There is. I wanted to do a release for months but other stuff always got in between.

6:01 PM
@MarcelKrüger what is missing? Do one need to sync with context?

2 hours later…
7:36 PM
umentationMostly documentation, but a Context merge is probably a good idea too.
