Hello everybody! Can you tell me what the correct pronunciation of "inputenc" is? ;-)

@JosephWright I think bra-ket notation was introduced by Dirac when he originally created his formalization of quantum mechanics in the 1920s, and it's presumably still standard.

Though it's just an inner product space, I think. Probably a Hilbert space. I forget the details.

@DavidCarlisle I entered the sentence "inputenc is a package for LaTeX 2e" at naturalreaders.com and selected "Peter from UK". Perer's pronunciation sounds like "inpju-tank". To me this sounded worrying and I was confused. Thank you for calming my concerns. ,-)

@UlrichDiez it is pronouncing inpute (e)nc as you would impute (e)nc with a "you" sound, which sounds odd but as inputenc isn't a real word it's not completely unreasonable

@barbarabeeton Oh I have nothing against hunting, although I don't do it myself. Lots of people hunt here and hunters by and large more concerned about nature preservation and the environment than most.

@AlanMunn -- I agree with that philosophy. Trophy hunting is no longer acceptable, but hunting for food is still necessary in some places, and when some species are overpopulated, culling may be the kindest approach. I suspect that for some people, hunting is just a good way to get outdoors; likewise fishing. (For myself, I prefer a camera. It's still a good chase.)

@barbarabeeton Out of curiosity, is there something in particular that you disagree with in the Chicago Style of Manual, when it comes to typesetting math?

(Just found a typo in it: the word "anvd" where it should have been "and". It surprised me a bit since it would have been caught by a spell-checker.)

@mickep I don't know CMS at all, but surely it can't have too much to say about math? Seems a bit out of its purview.

(Let me guess: sin(x+y) should be set tight between sin and (x+y).)

@mickep -- I don't have a current copy of Chicago, so I can't be specific. But part of the problem is that the "updates" of Swanson were not as well done as they should have been (Ellen was retired before updating was undertaken), and "Math into Type" lost much of its authority. One thing on which I violently disagree with Chicago is the relative position of quotes and punctuation. (But's that text.)

@barbarabeeton Hm, OK, I see. Does it mean that you like the older edition of Math into Type better?

@mickep -- The original edition deals entirely with Monotype composition, so it's really out of date. The manual did need updating. I was allowed to comment on some of the update before it was sent for printing, but after it appeared, I read the rest, and found some real blunders. Sadly, there's no one at AMS any more with the experience and knowledge that Ellen had to do a makeover, or the managerial will to schedule and budget for it.
