Hello everybody! Can you tell me what the correct pronunciation of "inputenc" is? ;-)

6 hours later…
6:35 AM
@JosephWright I think bra-ket notation was introduced by Dirac when he originally created his formalization of quantum mechanics in the 1920s, and it's presumably still standard.
Though it's just an inner product space, I think. Probably a Hilbert space. I forget the details.

7:53 AM
@UlrichDiez I say input enk (the same as input encoding without the oding:-)

8:27 AM
@DavidCarlisle Yup, sounds right to me

2 hours later…
10:16 AM
Surprise, surprise, new easybook uploads are waiting ctan.org/incoming :)

10:27 AM
@samcarter And siunitx of course: ctan.org/incoming

Still waiting for someone to call their package shitstorm.

@samcarter I've taken advantage of a release to sneak in usage of the new kernel option handling: there's a bug that makes it 'interesting', but things are working once you allow for that ;)

@JosephWright subsubversion 42 - that will be the answer to all unit questions! :)

10:57 AM
@mickep ... would be better than the millionth thesis.cls or cv.sty :)

2 hours later…
12:41 PM
@samcarter Like chinese book classes? :P

@mickep I admit that I'm not too familiar with chinese classes. Do they also have all the same name?

@samcarter I'm even less (not at all) familiar with them...

1 hour later…
2:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle I entered the sentence "inputenc is a package for LaTeX 2e" at naturalreaders.com and selected "Peter from UK". Perer's pronunciation sounds like "inpju-tank". To me this sounded worrying and I was confused. Thank you for calming my concerns. ,-)

2:30 PM
@UlrichDiez yes it does better with a space after the t
@UlrichDiez it is pronouncing inpute (e)nc as you would impute (e)nc with a "you" sound, which sounds odd but as inputenc isn't a real word it's not completely unreasonable

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@JosephWright it's spelt inputenc but pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove :)

@PauloCereda it gets this right, so it must be true

@DavidCarlisle oh no

3 hours later…
6:04 PM
...rotational symmetry? :)

@Werner Very nice!

6:20 PM
At last llncs entered TeX Live!

6:34 PM
@egreg ??

@JosephWright Several questions on the site dealt with it and it was always a pain to download the most recent version from some Springer site or whatever Git site having it (and maybe not updated).

@egreg Ah, right, yes

@PauloCereda

@AlanMunn /quacks in delight

@JosephWright Found on FB by a friend who also loves ducks, although she hunts them as well.

@AlanMunn /quacks sadly

@AlanMunn so a line with "hunt ducks" "research ducks' recipes" "eat ducks" is missing ;-P?

@AlanMunn you must have cut off the final row pluck, cook, eat
@Rmano great minds think alike...

7:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle :-)

@Rmano @DavidCarlisle I don't want to cause undue trauma in the chat.

@AlanMunn no trauma, just excessive "oh no"

7:24 PM
@AlanMunn -- Hunting them with a camera is a totally acceptable pursuit.

@AlanMunn ooh
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@DavidCarlisle oh no

@barbarabeeton Oh I have nothing against hunting, although I don't do it myself. Lots of people hunt here and hunters by and large more concerned about nature preservation and the environment than most.

7:51 PM
@AlanMunn -- I agree with that philosophy. Trophy hunting is no longer acceptable, but hunting for food is still necessary in some places, and when some species are overpopulated, culling may be the kindest approach. I suspect that for some people, hunting is just a good way to get outdoors; likewise fishing. (For myself, I prefer a camera. It's still a good chase.)

8:10 PM
@barbarabeeton Out of curiosity, is there something in particular that you disagree with in the Chicago Style of Manual, when it comes to typesetting math?
(Just found a typo in it: the word "anvd" where it should have been "and". It surprised me a bit since it would have been caught by a spell-checker.)

@mickep I don't know CMS at all, but surely it can't have too much to say about math? Seems a bit out of its purview.

(Let me guess: sin(x+y) should be set tight between sin and (x+y).)
@AlanMunn It has a lot to say about math.

@mickep I had no idea. Interesting.

@AlanMunn Me neither, until @barbarabeeton told me the other week. I borrowed it at the library.

@mickep -- I don't have a current copy of Chicago, so I can't be specific. But part of the problem is that the "updates" of Swanson were not as well done as they should have been (Ellen was retired before updating was undertaken), and "Math into Type" lost much of its authority. One thing on which I violently disagree with Chicago is the relative position of quotes and punctuation. (But's that text.)

8:23 PM
@barbarabeeton Hm, OK, I see. Does it mean that you like the older edition of Math into Type better?

@mickep -- The original edition deals entirely with Monotype composition, so it's really out of date. The manual did need updating. I was allowed to comment on some of the update before it was sent for printing, but after it appeared, I read the rest, and found some real blunders. Sadly, there's no one at AMS any more with the experience and knowledge that Ellen had to do a makeover, or the managerial will to schedule and budget for it.

9:00 PM
@barbarabeeton Oh, that is very sad to hear. Lost knowledge and experience... :(

@mickep -- Aside from that, Ellen Swanson was a first-class human being. It was a pleasure and an honor to know and work with her.

@barbarabeeton Very good to hear. :)
