@DavidCarlisle copied and pasted your input and got "Error: Invalid value for "glyphs": Invalid input, either use the symbol itself or the corresponding Unicode code point."

@mickep old version?

@PauloCereda could be.

@mickep Old version supports 0x1F986 and the duck directly. :)

@PauloCereda Oh, that worked indeed.

@mickep old version then. :)

11:20 AM
@PauloCereda I do not make a living of typesetting colored ducks, so I did not have such an extensive list of fonts as @DavidCarlisle, though.

@mickep ooh :)
@mickep I like how Apple has a font named Last resort :)

@CarLaTeX @egreg That famous Italian landmark. :)

12:34 PM
@PauloCereda oh, the very north west of Italy :)

@samcarter ooh :)

12:47 PM
@PauloCereda I can't recognize the tower on the left… ;-)

@egreg oopsie :)

@egreg That is because the pizza box is leaning... It should be the tower that is leaning.

yo'
@barbarabeeton I know. It was a nice place, I went to the Emmanuel Anglican. The sermon was very nicely made and well thought out which I always enjoy, just the presentation was a bit too American :-D we're used for a sermon to be a consistent speech with much less emotions shown :-)
@barbarabeeton Prague metro just got a full 4G/5G coverage in the tunnels (yes, everywhere in the stations and the tunnels), but there's no public WiFi AFAIK :-(
@barbarabeeton I saw snow, and I'm OK, just my bladder seems to be upset, so it's often a run between Starbucks :-)

@yo' /duck hug

1:03 PM
@PauloCereda We invaded France and I didn't know it

@CarLaTeX :)

1:26 PM
@yo' all public transport here is now 3G (the German shorthand that only vaccinated, recovered or tested people are allowed)

yo'
@samcarter yeah, saw a similar thing in Vienna, and I have to tell you: As a visitor, I felt so relaxed with these rules in place :-)
here in NYC they also want to see vaccination certificates, but there is no way to verify them as most people seem to have a hand-written piece of what looks like toilet paper as their certificate. I'm quite the exception with the clean blue-and-yellow EU thingy :-)

@yo' here we got a black and white printout with a qr thingy, no nice colours :( And verification is often only done in theory. In reality many people seem to be satisfied to just check that there is something resembling a qr code without scanning to see if this is really a vaccination certificate or just a link to a sale of your bookstore or something :)

yo'
@samcarter it was par-par in Vienna, but most places actually scanned the QRs. Only two places did an ID check though.

@yo' better than nothing:)

yo'
@samcarter yep! But the US thingy is really effective (meaning, "for effect"), similarly to the Czech, in the end.
I saw a tweet of a Czech guy who works at airport gates. He said that for the fun, on one flight he decided to scan the QR codes and check them against ID and boarding pass. It took him 5 people in the queue to have to call the police/security to a fraudster. (Who tried to run away. In the closed airport terminal.)

1:42 PM
@yo' outch! Such stuff explains why we are still battling with this pandemic :(

yo'
By the Czech law, falsifing the certificate or intentionally using a falsified one is a criminal offense with up to 3 years in prison. And that's only for falsifying the piece of paper, not for any offense against the public health.

I managed to get my certificate, yay!

yo'
@samcarter Yep. Most experts say: The restrictions we have are enough, if they are followed.
@PauloCereda Great!

@yo' This certificate tells that this duck 🦆 person got the COVID shot thingy
^^ very legit :)
@yo' but it's true, I got the certificate. <3

@PauloCereda Congrats!

1:45 PM
Surprisingly, the health ministry has an app which has all the update info available, with QR code, coat of arms, etc. Very fancy!
@samcarter I just need countries to accept the vaccine brand I had to take. :(

@PauloCereda which one does your neck of the woods use?

@samcarter Sinovac

yo'
Ours look like this:

@yo' It looks cool!

yo'
@PauloCereda yes, and the local (US) people don't know what do to with it :D

1:50 PM
@yo' too much information :)
@yo' COVID certificate, abridged version :)
This bloke got the COVID shot thingy

yo'
@PauloCereda exactly. But EU states released special apps that verify the certificates based on the QR code.

@yo' True :)
@yo' ooh UK approved Sinovac! <3

yo'
@PauloCereda ?
ah, got it now. Well, WHO did, no?

@PauloCereda blog.wego.com/sinovac-approved-countries/… says you can visit @DavidCarlisle

@yo' Fancy! Maybe my general practitioner just did not have a colour printer :)

@yo' yep :)
@samcarter ooh
@yo' oh no

yo'
@samcarter possible. I got this one from the gov'tal website, so I have it as PDF -- which is useful, as you can see, this one has been pretty badly beaten up!

@DavidCarlisle WHO-approved quack

@yo' I scanned mine :)

yo'
@samcarter I printed 4 copies of mine for this US journey :)

1:56 PM
@samcarter ooh with a 3D scanner?
Here's a 3D model of my certificate
That would be AWESOME

@PauloCereda I read a newspaper article of somebody getting their code as tattoo (I wonder what they will do when they get their 3rd shot...)

@yo' here it's delivered as a PDF... on you health-app in the phone. But i also have a printed copy.

@Rmano The same in Italy

yo'
@Rmano we don't have a standard health app, so here you had to fetch it using your citizen/health ID and phone number you used to register for the vaccination. (No, our country can't do the things the easy way...)

2:03 PM
@Rmano ooh :)
@samcarter ooh

2:17 PM
@yo' we don't have anything at all.

@DavidCarlisle what would you do if you travel?

@UlrikeFischer NHS Covid pass
@DavidCarlisle NHS App does the job: I just checked :)

@JosephWright hey I can visit you and go for the UK-TUG pizza thingy

2:38 PM
@UlrikeFischer you can get something specifically for travel and as Joseph said it's possible to get something in the nhs app (although I haven't tried)
@PauloCereda you will need a tardis

@DavidCarlisle :)

3:18 PM
@MarcelKrüger any idea what could trigger this error? It is not on my system, but from another miktex user. I see no obvious difference to my miktex where I have no problems.

3:30 PM
@UlrikeFischer Looks odd. Probably there's a font with a malformed name on the system... It might be interesting to run luaotfload-tool -u -vvvvv to see what the last font file before the error was.

@MarcelKrüger I just tried on my system \setmathfont{LatinModernMathXXX} and miktex then hangs while looking for the font. Now I'm running luaotfload-tool, currently it has stopped at iosevka.ttc

@PauloCereda So that's the famous "Tower of Pizza"? :-)
And, I've seen your albatross. What flavor is it? (I didn't know that sketch, brilliant, as usual).

@MarcelKrüger if one is patient is seems to resolve the iosevka.ttc and the second call to luaotfload-tool is then faster.

3:47 PM
@gusbrs the very same! :)
@gusbrs it's albatross flavour. :)

4:00 PM
@PauloCereda :) And are you sure no albatrosses were harmed to make the sketch? That one seemed pretty dead to me...

@gusbrs it's... not dead, it's resting. :) (see what I did here? :)

@PauloCereda :) Just like the parrot, I suppose. hahaha

@gusbrs Yes! :)

@PauloCereda Damn! I crack up every time I rewatch that one... :D

@gusbrs :D

4:08 PM
@UlrikeFischer I get that here too, iosevka.ttc contains insanely many fonts...

@MarcelKrüger ;-). Well it seems not to be source of the other error, but I asked to run luaotfload-tool.

@yo' -- Well, you've survived. "Too American." Wasn't always that way, but I grew up in a largely German-American community, which was pretty sober.
@yo' -- Believe it or not, I've never been in a Starbucks. The closest is in the ground floor of the hotel where we stay when we visit Quebec, so we have to walk through their "overflow" area when we return from a foray to the Basse-Ville. (Usually with quite a bit of snow. Signs everywhere to stay well clear of roof edges so as not to get dumped on.)

4:30 PM
@barbarabeeton So what's your go to spot for bad coffee, Dunkin' Donuts? (We have a Starbucks in our building at the university, so it's hard to avoid.)

@yo' -- The certificates here are on card stock, at least at our local pharmacy where we got stuck, and an office supply store would laminate them for free, so ours are more durable, which is a good thing, given the disorganization of my purse. But a photo on a phone works as well, and it does get checked at theaters and restaurants where we aren't regulars.
@AlanMunn -- I go for hot chocolate, and my purveyor of choice is Seven Stars, a local bakery shop. (And it's good hot chocolate.)

@barbarabeeton Not a coffee drinker then?

@AlanMunn -- Very fussy. Only good Turkish or Greek coffee, or Louisiana style with chicory.

@barbarabeeton Hmm, those are all very acquired tastes.

@barbarabeeton ooh chocolate

4:37 PM
@AlanMunn -- My mother didn't drink coffee, so I never acquired that taste. If I make coffee for guests, my setup is a nice Chemex pot with original wooden collar, a copper bain Marie to keep it warm, and fresh-ground beans. (So I'm a snob.)

@barbarabeeton you know, way down among Brazilians, coffee beans grow by the billions, so we've got to find those extra cups to fill! ooh we've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil!
/Sinatra intensifies

@PauloCereda But sadly, despite its ubiquity, there's a lot of bad coffee to be had in Brazil. Although nothing beats a pão de queijo and a well made black coffee.

@AlanMunn YES! And café preto for the win! <3

yo'
@barbarabeeton They are a world-wode verifies mediocre coffee :)

@yo' -- Then I'm happy to stick with my favorites.

@samcarter -- But you're not on a moving conveyance.
@yo' -- Where are you headed, and when do you fly to Dulles?

5:27 PM

@PauloCereda command promt
is that part of TeX Live and not controlled from the arara side?

arara 6.1.3
Copyright (c) 2021, Island of TeX
arara is released under the New BSD license.

New features in version 6.1.3:
* Split arara into API, core and implementation packages.
* Refactored localization to use IETF BCP 47 codes.
* Added quite a number of rules and improved syntax.
* Rules now have a unique file name to be identifiable in a texmf tree.
* New ability to specify default preamble for files without directives.
It only happens if you pass without arguments

@PabloGonzálezL okay, so the wrapper works. :)
@PabloGonzálezL Yes, the "error" is... well, not an error. :) Allow me to explain. :)

@PauloCereda I just find it strange that it returns that output (not an error as such).

@PabloGonzálezL when arara is executed without any arguments, it resorts to the tool usage and returns 1, which is an exit status representing an error.
Which is different when you run arara --help, which shows the tool usage and returns 0, as the behaviour is expected.

@PauloCereda Ok, mmm, then runscript.tlu returns correct information

@PabloGonzálezL our reasoning is that the tool doesn't know what to do when simply called without any arguments, hence the "error" status. But that other message (command failed with exit code 1: ) is not ours, it's the TL wrapper. :)
@PabloGonzálezL see the ➜ thingy in my terminal, it's red, indicating a non-zero run.
Whereas arara --help brings a correct run. :)
Maybe @TeXnician could expand on that. :)

5:36 PM
@PauloCereda Haaa, I understand
@PauloCereda I assumed that if ARG[0] was empty, it would return --help (no more).

@PabloGonzálezL it's by design. E.g,
Some tools behave the same, like diff.
But others don't, so your milleage vary. :)
@PabloGonzálezL Sort of it, but it's technically an "unexpected run". :)

@PauloCereda Nope. You nailed it. It's user error not to specify a help flag if the help output is wanted. It's simply unclear what should be done without arguments.

@PauloCereda Jeje, buen punto, y esto $ albatross

@PabloGonzálezL the bird mafia behaves the same :)
@PabloGonzálezL (spoilers: we use the same underlying CLI library)

@PauloCereda ohhhhh
jajja

5:41 PM
@PauloCereda it would be funny if you would name your directories after street names in the city your computer is named after. Then one could take a walk through the streets :)

@PabloGonzálezL we can make arara behave like arara --help error-wise, but we understand those are different scenarios, although the output is the same. :) (it's a matter of simply adding a statusCode entry).
@samcarter ooh I like this idea :)

@PauloCereda I stumbled upon this by chance while modifying a script and was passing nothing to arara :(

@PabloGonzálezL sorry :) Is there anything we could do to help?

@PauloCereda Hehe, I've already fixed it, but I couldn't see what was going on in linux, only when switching to win I realized that I was passing an empty argument :D

@PabloGonzálezL ooh

5:46 PM
@PauloCereda $ ltximg :D

@PabloGonzálezL ooh :)

@PauloCereda Mmmm...l3build uses the same encapsulation of TeX Live?

@PabloGonzálezL probably, but I don't speak with authority, it's the other duck @JosephWright

@PauloCereda You mean @JosephWright who forgot to update the Copyright (C) 2014-2020 The LaTeX Project line in l3build :D

@PabloGonzálezL ooh :)

5:57 PM
@PabloGonzálezL It's sorted in today's upload - I'll probably automate
@PabloGonzálezL Frank has me writing the l3build section for TLC3

@JosephWright ohhhhh
@JosephWright jeje....add man to :D

@PabloGonzálezL or outsource it to IoT :)

@PauloCereda i.e. integrate it into arara? :D

@TeXnician shhh it's a secret :)
And we ducks are very good at keeping secrets. :)

6:01 PM
@PabloGonzálezL Huh?
@PauloCereda Good plan

@JosephWright a man page, probably :)
@JosephWright e.g, ^^ :)

@PauloCereda We have one of those

@JosephWright ooh :)
/troff intensifies

@JosephWright man l3build está un poco desactualizado :D

@PauloCereda I generated it manually, so it likely needs updating (it's not auto-generated from the l3build help, which is automatically derived from the known targets and options)

6:03 PM
@PabloGonzálezL ooh mi corazon
@JosephWright ooh

@PabloGonzálezL Sure, but then man is essentially unreadable (at least to me): one needs texdoc or similar anyway

@PabloGonzálezL this is so jolly youtube.com/watch?v=qj1V9XMczZk

@PauloCereda About CLI, this is documented arara file [OPTIONS] (change the order)
@PauloCereda :D

@PabloGonzálezL oh our arguments are not positional, so no side effects. :)
@PabloGonzálezL but noted, I will check if we can update on that, thanks. :)

@PauloCereda I noticed it some time ago, but I do not remember seeing it in the documentation.

6:07 PM
@PabloGonzálezL probably not. :)

@PauloCereda If it is not in the documentation ...then it is not valid to use it this way :D

The command returns 0, so it's not arara's fault

@PauloCereda transparency ...need this line
@PauloCereda @UlrikeFischer fault? :D

It's XeLaTeX which is not handling error statuses, not arara.
@PabloGonzálezL nope :)

6:37 PM
@PauloCereda jejej

@PabloGonzálezL sorry, I see now it works.
@PabloGonzálezL but again, xelatex is returning a successful execution, regardless of the gs error.

@PauloCereda mmm...who do we blame?

@PabloGonzálezL no idea, sorry.

@PauloCereda I'll blame XeLaTeX for the time being...thank goodness I now have luapstricks :D

@PabloGonzálezL :)

6:41 PM
@PauloCereda I think it is script provided by TeX Live that does not report the error when running gs.

@PabloGonzálezL I don't think so, it's part of the engine.

@PauloCereda I will have to hunt the error one by one in a batch process :( and I had blind faith in arara.

@PabloGonzálezL <3

All the more reason to move to LuaTeX :D

7:08 PM
@JosephWright Is there a chance we can get PGF support for l3build before Christmas? Over the Christmas break Christian Feuersänger will probably be available again and merge PRs for pgfplots. It would be great if I could sneak l3build support into the queue.

7:47 PM
@HenriMenke Should be: I have one L3 job to do, then I can look at this. @MarcelKrüger's tdsdir idea is in the right direction, so we will get there

@PabloGonzálezL Ulrike
@PauloCereda albatross feature request, option to just return one font name with no ascii art, in a mode that can be allowed in restricted shell escape then you could use \newfontfamily\zzz{|any font that's got a duck}

Good morning/afternoon/evening.

@LaTeXereXeTaL good night

@DavidCarlisle 20:00 there I believe.

@LaTeXereXeTaL it just seemed good to fill in the missing time slot (truth and accuracy not really a feature of this chat)

8:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ah I see.

@DavidCarlisle Ignoring pragmatics again, I see.

8:30 PM
@DavidCarlisle Would a comma- or newline-separated plain text list output with multiple fonts do as well (i.e. machine readable mode, cutting can be done by piping into another bash command or even from within TeX)?

9:14 PM
@TeXnician not if it's going to be called from restricted shell escape as you can't get access to the shell pipeline, as a shell pre-process outside tex it would be easy enough to clean up the existing output with sed or whatever but that's no fun
@TeXnician so this output:
$ albatross -a n  -b 1 U+1F986 | grep '|.*[a-z]' | grep -v 'Font name' | head -1 | sed -e 's/| //'
Noto Color Emoji

@DavidCarlisle Okay. So probably there are going to be a few command-line options more :)

@TeXnician I'm not sure if you'd get permission to have it in the restricted shell escape list, I don't think you can do anything too bad from albatross can you? (that is you ca't write anywhere other than stdout?

@DavidCarlisle Yes, got that. Just thought that a typical machine-readable format (like one plain text name per line) would have been sufficient. But combined with some limit parameter it should be simple to have both.

@TeXnician a comma list would be fine actually as that would be easy to filter with tex expansion

@DavidCarlisle Iirc, albatross indeed can't write anywhere but stdout. But it uses fc-query so I don't know if the user could do something with that. Maybe @PauloCereda knows.
@DavidCarlisle Good to know, might become a comma list then :)

9:37 PM
@TeXnician @PauloCereda sort of like this although it doesn't work for me here :(
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{fontspec}

\newread\zz
\openin\zz "|albatross -a n -b 1 U+1F986 | grep '|.*[a-z]' | grep -v 'Font name' | head -1 | sed -e 's/[| ]//g'"

\closein\zz

\newfontfamily\duckfont{\duckfontname}

@MarcelKrüger can probably tell me what I have done wrong:

@DavidCarlisle wrong renderer, you need harfbuzz

9:54 PM
@UlrikeFischer error message could be more descriptive:-)

@DavidCarlisle it was descriptive enough for me ;-)

@UlrikeFischer for your prize, you get cooked dinner:

@DavidCarlisle does it need shell-escape?

@UlrikeFischer yes see feature request to IoT above to not need shell-escape it also needs a unix shell commandline in that form
@samcarter seems reasonable
