@PauloCereda Diolch am y cerdyn! It arrived the day after I finished something for you last week, but the post office changed its hours and I finally managed to send it today. (So you may get it in a year or so with a bit of luck.) Cwac!

I'm sure this has been asked before but I cannot find it. I have a tree using tikzfigure and would like to "circle" some nodes of it with a dashed line. If anyone knows an already answered question that answers this, please let me know. The toy code I'm using: pastebin.com/tb3LWvfC
This is what I want
I asked here because my guess is this has already been asked before, so I don't want to create a duplicate. If it is not, let me know so I can post as an actual question so people can find it in the future.

2:03 AM
(Too inexperienced to determine if any one of those three are duplicates)
More aggressive (correct) duplicate closure improves answer quality, as it's easier to update answers to be correct
• I remember somewhere that mentions that ucs package is not maintained anymore. Is it still true now? (and what are the implications? It seems to work well anyway)
Actually it does not work for 𝑨
> a.tex|8 error| Package ucs Error: Unknown Unicode character 119912 = U+1D468, possibly declared in uni-468.def. Type H to see if it is available with options.
Wait actually it's available, never mind
No, it's not available
Okay, so only the characters that are supported without special packages (bfit in this case?) are allowed

2:25 AM
• Is there a way for me to type Unicode characters in source code without Unicode-math in XeTeX?
All answers I found on the site suggest Unicode-math (or mathspec), and needless to say
https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/34604/entering-unicode-characters-in-latex
doesn't have any useful answer.
• This is a section in circuitikz manual that says

> Finally, the internal notcirc node used for the output negation is accessible with the name nodename-not,

How do I do that? ` \node [american nand port-not] at (0, 0) {};` doesn't compile , while ` \node [american nand port] at (0, 0) {};` works fine.

2:55 AM
\catcode\𝑨=\active` raises a.tex|6 error| Improper alphabetic constant. in XeTeX, although it works fine in LuaTeX. Feels like another non-BMP character bug.

@user202729 You can use \catcode"1D468=\active if you insist on staying with XeTeX. (Or \catcode``𝑨=\active (with one backtick of course) if you don't have weird catcodes set)
\begingroup
  \escapechar=-1
  \expandafter
\endgroup
\expandafter \catcode \expandafter`\detokenize{\𝑨}=\active
@user202729 ^ This works too if the previous one fails because of odd catcodes.

without the backslash it works fine but... just feel like another weird bug in XeTeX because it works just fine in LuaTeX)

@user202729 yes (actually this came up in some latex team discussions just the other day) xetex support is rather frozen these days although it might get fixed one day

Huh (unfortunately)

@user202729 Secret trick: You can avoid all kinds of issues in XeLaTeX and add additional features by running alias xelatex=lualatex first :P

3:08 AM
It's slightly slower
... actually not that much, most of the slowness for me comes from pandoc and Unicode-math
I can't find a pandoc speed up question here, maybe some day I'll post an answer
@user202729 Can anyone check my other questions above?
@DavidCarlisle in that case I might want to make questions for these issues, for searchability

@user202729 is unicode-math really slower? I'm surprised. There is a hit at the start when it loads unicode-math table but (a) that's easily avoided and (b) you woul dneed a similar number of definitions to enable unicode input with classic math setup.

Actually it's not that bad compared to pandoc
But let me check.

@user202729 how do you even compare things that are so unrelated?

@DavidCarlisle :)
Okay seriously
It takes me 1.1s to use unicode-math + xelatex and 0.16s to use ucs + pdflatex
I'm still trying out different tools to see which is the most efficient. Sometimes even markdown isn't easy enough for me (will try TeXStudio and etc. later)
Although even this is not really fair because (if I recalled correctly?) inputenc only define actually used in document characters
(it scans through the document)

3:25 AM
@user202729 would be interesting to see how much of that is startup time (which can mostly be avoided by adjusting the format) unicode-math's \symb{...} commands are a bit slow as they change dozens of catcodes but if you are using direct unicode input that shouldn't be an issue. Or if the engine itself is slower handling the opentypoe math layout in each formula
@user202729 ? nothing scans ahead in a document in tex, it just reads line by line outputting as it goes, the document is never held in memory.

Maybe I misremembered. Let me check
> Unfortunately the number of Unicode characters that in theory could be contained in a document is enormous. Thus even with today’s amount of computermemory it would be unrealistic to predefine all of them. Therefore the approachtaken by LATEX is as follows:
> •At the start of the document (\begin{document}) it examines all font encodings that are being used within the current document.
So
-
@DavidCarlisle (regarding the discussion in comment thread) No?
I mean, it's obviously impractical for the user to repeatedly check all their answers for updatedness

@user202729 ah that but that's not scanning the document that just means that if you use say \usepackage[LGR]{fontenc} it'll define theGreek input. Doesn't affect the math definitions at al as that is (in pdftex) a fixed set of encodings

But because the (supposed) goal of the stack site (at least that's what I think, simply because it uses stack's program) is to maintain a repository of questions

@user202729 if an answer becomes wrong due to a package update or whatever then if it comes up often add a comment pointing to newer information, but actually in that case my answer is still valid, you were commenting on old comments of egreg under the answer, they can't even be edited all that could hapen is that they are deleted

Okay, I know that, but information is better than no information right

3:35 AM
@user202729 I'm pretty sure the thousands of old python2 answers on stackoverflow haven't been updated for python3

I may post a new one for Python3 if the question doesn't specifically ask for Python2 and (rare) there isn't one already

@user202729 yes exactly, that isn't the same as adding a comment to every old answer saying it's outdated. But saying this changed is one thing, your wording read more as if egreg was wrong with his original comment. It makes no difference actually to the end user but it might to egreg...

Okay
Maybe I could just remove the ping and add "now" (not that I can edit comments)

@user202729 nah it doesn't really matter, egreg will survive either way.

4 hours later…
@user202729 what I meant is that if you draw a NAND port with node [american nand port](X) then you can access the notcirc node as X-not

Oh okay (almost every package developers are here? Surprising)
Probably not "almost every" but

7:35 AM
@DavidCarlisle ;-)

8:21 AM
@user202729 pribably not that accurate but tex.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1181/…

8:32 AM
@cfr Hi! Miss you! I hope you and your loved ones are well! We hwyadens love sending stuff. :) Stay well, my friend!
@DavidCarlisle quack

@PauloCereda Brecwast

@DavidCarlisle ooh Welsh oh no

3 hours later…
11:49 AM
@UlrikeFischer I'm disappointed you didn't recommend the typewriter package for variable bold tt.

@AlanMunn lol

3:43 PM
Nutella cappuccino might be good

It would be cool indeed if we had a run snippet feature on TeX too.

AdhilThis is my code: private void DrawCharts() { List<double> xAxis = new List<double>(); List<double> yAxis = new List<double>(); ch_Vf2.Series.Add("Vf2"); ch_Vf2.Series["Vf2"].ChartType = System.Windows.Forms.DataVisualization.Char...

@enthu how would TL versions + package versions be maintained/selected?

@enthu I thought you could only run javascript on site (running in the browser) where are they running C#?

@PauloCereda I don't know, may be some link to outer sources like Overleaf. BTW, it shall be kind of Elon Big Dream!
@DavidCarlisle it does not produce results in the question, though

3:59 PM
@PauloCereda like this ? bit.ly/3m8P2JQ

@DavidCarlisle bit.ly/3jr63wX

@enthu stefan's forums question/answer code sectiosn all link to the server used for the above ^^
@enthu see the run latex button at latex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=34570 (I did the server code, Stefan/DANTE provides the hosting)
@enthu ah is it just running the c# as javascript so not really doing anything

@DavidCarlisle wow! it is a good option to be added here! I am impressed how my Elon dream came true this much fast :))

and of course, as any of Elon dreams, it's other people doing hard work. :)

@enthu it's probably unlikely that stackexchange would add this (especially hosted outside their empire) you could (now) use a use script to add such a button to the site but then the results are only visible to you so not so useful.

4:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh an empire

@PauloCereda sure
@DavidCarlisle texlive.net/run?%0A\documentclass{article}%0A%0A\begin{document}%0A\Huge%20\textbf{\scshape%20OH%20NO}%0A\end{document}%0A

@PauloCereda They Rise and Fall (except the British Empire, on which the sun never sets, of course)
@enthu that's why we were using URL shorteners the chat here messes up long URL :-)

@enthu Link is tricky because of spaces and other stuff...

@DavidCarlisle What about I bring the idea up in the meta website, it is indeed a fascinating tool

@DavidCarlisle how about using the URL encode thingy?

4:09 PM
@PauloCereda it is url encoded, hence %0A for newlines, but the markdown chat syntax messes it up

@DavidCarlisle Hm I'd suggest base64 but that link would be HUGE

@PauloCereda shorturl.at/emGL6 ^__^

@PauloCereda oh I wonder if it would work just to %-encode the \

@enthu it failed for me :(
@DavidCarlisle ooh let's catcode it

@PauloCereda rb.gy/0c0acq :(((

4:13 PM
@enthu now it works
:)

Cool!

@PauloCereda clearly correct text

@DavidCarlisle Copyright David Carlisle

Why is my inline code not rendering in the second paragraph of this answer?

@AlanMunn sorry I edited it to test this reply: you marked the heading with html rather than markdown so you need a blank line to revert to markdown mode

4:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ah ok. Thanks.

1 hour later…
5:27 PM
@PauloCereda It's a thing in southern Piemonte: they cover the interior of a small (shot-like) glass with Nutella and the they put an espresso in it and then some cream or concentrated milk. I think it's called "vetrino" or something similar, maybe @samcarter knows better. Waaaay too sweet for me.

@Rmano ooh
Vetrino alla Nutella con topping alla nocciola
@Rmano ^^ ooh

@PauloCereda that. I have tooth pain just looking at it.

@Rmano I need some cappuccino right now :)

4 hours later…
9:15 PM
@PauloCereda Cappuccino in the afternoon???
@PauloCereda That could be evidence for withdrawing your Italian citizenship!
