In MathJax room there was a short discussion on writing expressions with quantifiers.

I would consider it more a discussion about typography than about some LaTeX/MathJax-related technical issue. (I'd say that the aspect which is being discussed is the same for MathJax and LaTeX.)

Maybe some TeX - LaTeX users could have something to add there. Link to the conversation: Spacing in expressions with quantifiers.

@user202729 a tikz node with specified with is a minipage and \\ works wherever it works in a minipage, I don't understand what you mean by top level there

@MartinSleziak i'd never use outer parenthesis around the quantifier, you can compress \in as {\in}

By "top level" I mean "not inside any group" (I tried \textbf{line 1 \\ line 2}, which doesn't work while \textbf{line 1} \\ \textbf{line 2} works), but okay

@user202729 you must be doing something strange (unless you are in math in which case \textbf is an unbreakable box, but that's unrelated to tikz, \\ in text would be unaffected by \textbf with standard definitions

@DavidCarlisle It depends on who is we in that sentence - the room I linked to is associated with Mathematics, not with TeX - LaTeX. (Here are math rooms and TeX rooms.)

Of course, the there is an overlap between the users of these two sites.

Can someone tell me what \pgfsyspdfmark is for? I can't find out much about it. The hits on TeX SE mostly seem to relate to corrupt aux files and suchlike.

@LaTeXereXeTaL That design was indeed very charming! I still have a 2007 MacBook around (first model with an Intel chipset), with a memory upgrade and running Fedora. :) I think it was the last one with the white design + glowing apple in the lid.

@LaTeXereXeTaL I bravely kept MacOS running on my iMac up to High Sierra, I guess. At that point, I had it as a Unix box (living inside the terminal, basically), but then Homebrew dropped support for it, so any further updates to the installed packages had to be compiled from source. My daily routine involved +3 hours of heavy compilation, so I gave up on MacOS and installed Linux. Couldn't be happier. :)

@FaheemMitha without looking I assume it's for adding pdfmarks defined using whatever the backend needs (lualtex/dvips/dvipdfmx etc)

@PauloCereda I just recalled another funny "language mix up" case, related to the "pauladas". Not long ago a new cosmetics store opened just a couple of blocks from my house. And they decided that it might be fancy to go with a French sounding name. So they went with "Le Batom". When I saw it the first time I just cracked! And still laugh every time I pass by. I can even imagine the slogan: "Come and get your eyelids purple!" :-)

Hello everyone! Sorry for bothering you, I'm looking for a way to compile tex documents to get both a pdf file and html pages as an output. Is there anything like that, that you know of?

An example of that could be bookdown.org, but I have a few things against it, one of which is, it doesn't take latex as an input, but files written in R markdown, afaik

@MarcelKrüger I just saw on the texlive list, that someone has a problem with the new \pdfgentounicode=1: the cmap breaks if one converts the pdf with ps2pdf to another pdf.

@UlrikeFischer I've seen, but there isn't much we can do about it. There already is a GhostScript bug report about it, but tl;dr: The GhostScript developer would like all CMap's to map to single codepoints (which would make the documents worse for all other consumers) and considers the issue to be rather unimportant anyway. I left a comment there to support our approach, but it doesn't sound like we should expect a fix anytime soon.

@MarcelKrüger ah, well "We (not unreasonably I feel) expect that a single character code should map to a single Unicode code point" is an interesting point of view ;-)

@UlrikeFischer and @MarcelKrüger -- Even the Unicode Technical Committee has wavered on that point, by providing "variation selectors". Most recent addition to those is the "addition" by this method of calligraphic script to the "formal" script shown in the Unicode charts. The "same" letter in both scripts can have different meanings in a single math paper, and actual examples of this usage was what forced the UTC to make that decision. Might that argument have any weight?

@barbarabeeton I don't think that one need subtil arguments here. The general idea that there is an one-to-one relationship from glyphs in a font to unicode code points is simply wrong as lots of ligatures proves.

@UlrikeFischer -- and Unicode doesn't have a ligature for "fj". Quite short-sighted, in my opinion. (Oh, I've got lots of objections to some Unicode decisions. Getting the math alphanumerics accepted was a struggle, but they had to give in when faced with actual practice in math and technical literature. That argument is not particularly subtle!)

@barbarabeeton well imho it was wrong to add the fi and ff ligature as unicode code points. Making a ligature is a "shaping" decision, and not related to the meaning.

@UlrikeFischer they came in from legacy enclodings and were probably politically necessary to get an agreed encoding at all

@DavidCarlisle yes, and we can live with them like with other historical remains. But one wouldn't get discussions like the one on the gs list if they weren't there ;-).

@UlrikeFischer -- Those are "legacy" items. As are quite a few items in the U+2300 block, in particular the vertically split integral, sum, and fences. Unfortunately, the membership of the UTC is a bit short on actual scientists. And @DavidCarlisle is correct about the politics.
