I updated my question to include what I have done: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/615560/…

4 hours later…
6:31 AM
@barbarabeeton Well, it's only as good as the input. If you're dealing with something that has masses and masses of available data, like English <> French, you would expect something passable. The less you have of data the less likely you are to be successful with auto-translating (or auto-transcribing) because the programming doesn't speak these languages. It has no knowledge of the big picture context. It can only make an educated (or not so educated) guess.
@barbarabeeton Same here, although our general "competence idiom" is not quite so family friendly :p

7:08 AM
@samcarter you broke tugboat

7:22 AM
Hi @DavidCarlisle, good day.

morning

7:55 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no?

@samcarter You should have used picture mode

Q: tikz 3d gets "too many vectors" at commercial printer - detection? fix?

Karl BerryThe 3d marmot included in samcarter's upcoming tugboat article on tikzlings (thanks sc!), which reduces to, \documentclass{article} \usepackage{tikzlings} \begin{document} \tikz{\marmot[3D]} \end{document} caused an error at TUGboat's commercial printer because of "too many vectors". I'll append...

@DavidCarlisle ups! Sorry!
Quick fix: wait until after the winter, then the belly of the marmot is flatter?

Jul 11 '18 at 16:13, by David Carlisle
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\begin{picture}(100,100)
  \put(50,50){\oval(50,80){}}
  \put(35,42){\oval(10,15){}}
  \put(65,42){\oval(10,15){}}
  \put(40,75){\circle*{5}}
  \put(60,75){\circle*{5}}
  \put(50,65){\circle*{10}}
  \qbezier(40,60)(50,50)(60,60)
\end{picture}

\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle and looks much nicer, too!

1 hour later…
9:16 AM
@UlrikeFischer The "strange rectangle" problem was recently fixed. You could tell them to use the beamer version from github

@samcarter I'm currently on the road so can't test something, I only recognised the problem from the image.
@samcarter we could define RIP standards: 1 3D-marmot, 1 3D-marmot and 1 3D-Bär...

9:55 AM
@UlrikeFischer The tikzlings at Rock Im Park? Sounds like a good show :)

10:31 AM
LaTeX pre-release building

I didn't realise Karl Berry had an account here.
Or if I did, I'd forgotten.

@FaheemMitha only for emergencies

21 answers. So apparently, 21 emergencies.

10:48 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no

So Karl Berry runs TeX Live as well as TUGBoat?

@FaheemMitha yes

Wow, that's a lot.

11:22 AM
@MarcelKrüger You about?

@JosephWright 'allo ich bin Herr Krüger

@PauloCereda Guten tag Herr Krüger, wie geht es Ihnen?

@JosephWright oh nein
@JosephWright Heute esse ich Shokoladenkuchen
2

@PauloCereda Ausgezeichnet!

11:38 AM
@JosephWright ooh
@MarcelKrüger ^^ a flawless conversation :)

Abendessen

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle Achje

Hello

I would be grateful if I get a help in creating a list labelled in Arabic script letters.

For example, if I have

\babelprovide[import, main,
mapdigits,
counters/abjad = ا ب جـ د ه‍ و
]{arabic}

how to use the counter abjad in labelling a list created by enumitem?

@DavidCarlisle a bit early for that

11:55 AM
@samcarter but it takes a while to prepare and cook

@DavidCarlisle you need a better recipe :)

@DavidCarlisle oh no
@samcarter oh no

@PauloCereda better := one without duck

@samcarter ooh
@samcarter also ooh Pascal

@PauloCereda :D

yo'
12:40 PM
@PauloCereda no idea what "Heute esse ich", I would be fine with just the "Shokoladenkuchen"

@yo' ooh :)

1:30 PM
@Diaa I think this answer shows the basic technique (obviously the language is different).

@JosephWright Now I am. I added the deploy workflow, is there anything else missing or can 2e be released?

@Plergux OH MY YES

@PauloCereda Now I'm craving a cinnamon roundo. XD

@Plergux haha perfect timing! I just read your message when they said cinnamon roundo!

@PauloCereda LOL

2:15 PM
@Plergux File cannot be foundo
I am gonna use it

@PauloCereda LOL. From now on all error messages will be delivered in folk music style rhymes. :p

@Plergux ooh

2:30 PM
@Plergux too bad @DavidCarlisle will miss them because he does not make any errors :)

@samcarter but I do typeset carols, and could do folk if needed

2:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle yes, the famous tex.stackexchange.com/a/345325/36296

3:06 PM
@Plergux what have you done to me?!?!?!?! I am listening to these guys nonstop!

3:50 PM
@samcarter well, obviously. but he often tells other people about their errors, so... :þ
@PauloCereda HAHAHAHAH! They are addicting. You probably shouldn't listen to Lemon Demon either. :þ

@Plergux oh no

@PauloCereda MWUAAHAHAHA!

@FaheemMitha -- I wouldn't say Karl exactly runs TUGboat, but he's certainly a key player, as production manager. Another. largely unsung, contributor is Robin in the TUG office, who maintains the member records and pays the bills. I'm only the editor, trying to make sure that the content is accurate and makes sense. Remove any one of these components, and the enterprise fails.

@PauloCereda (I was thinking about cursing you with Björn Rosenström as well but he only sings in Swedish so he might be a little out of your league :p)

@Plergux oopsie :)

4:01 PM
@barbarabeeton Any mischaracterization is purely unintentional and hereby apologized for.
I'm only an occasional TUGboat reader.

@FaheemMitha -- So, what sort of content would increase your interest? (But it's true that Karl is overloaded, and we're fortunate to have such a willing and capable volunteer.)

@barbarabeeton That wasn't a criticism of the content, which I'm sure is just fine.
I just don't happen to read it very often.
Possibly because my priorities tend to be (a) trying to understand what the frig TeX is doing today, and (b) making sure I can get it to do what I want.
That's usually enough effort, and TUGBoat articles don't typically enter into it much.
@barbarabeeton Though since you ask, showcasing the Lua backend would be good. But you probably do that already.

4:20 PM
@FaheemMitha -- Okay, thanks for the suggestion.

4:33 PM
@barbarabeeton We don't say this often enough, but thank you and everybody else involved for producing the amazing tugboats! 4.bp.blogspot.com/-fB2f6a5_p1Q/VVWOnKAhq5I/AAAAAAAA590/…

Anybody successful in accessing the DANTE meeting online access?

@samcarter -- And thank you for your vote of confidence! (I may grumble a lot, but generally I enjoy seeing all the goodies before anyone else.)

5:14 PM
interesting document class: tex.stackexchange.com/q/615762/1090

@Plergux sheep person why!!!!! I am on their third album now

@PauloCereda because duck person has nothing better to do? :þ

@Plergux shhh :)

5:37 PM
@StefanKottwitz did I lose the Dante meeting?! o.O

5:57 PM
@StefanKottwitz no

@UlrikeFischer I'm in, and 3 others
@UlrikeFischer I think, first one has to change the password, before being able to log in
and an issue is: one has to be logged in first, before a course (meeting) can be assigned
that restriction would require to login a bit earlier when possible, before the conference
not much happening right now, just audio tests of participants

@StefanKottwitz ok after I changed the password I got logged in. And now??

Refresh the dashboard, Thomas will add you
@UlrikeFischer try please, refresh dashboard, or the link above

@StefanKottwitz I see something, but I have no idea where the peoples are, feeling lonely ;-)

7:03 PM
@PauloCereda Shokoladenkuchen is quite good German! Take this what qbi just now said on twitter:
"Datenverschlüsselungsschlüssel werden mit einem Schlüsselverschlüsselungsschlüssel verschlüsselt."

@samcarter @barbarabeeton I await every TUGBoat issue as eagerly as I await my American Journal of Physics, The Physics Teacher, and Sky & Telescope!

@LaTeXereXeTaL -- Thanks for your encouragement. That's a pretty impressive collection of "competitors"!

@LaTeXereXeTaL I usually spoiler myself by reading the pdf versions -- can't wait the long time until the issue arrives in Europe :)

@barbarabeeton @samcarter Getting the print versions was an incentive for me to join TUG. I like having hardcopy when I don't feel like looking at a computer screen (which I've done too much of over the past year and a half).

7:28 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL Have you tried an e-ink reader? For me, this does not cause any of the eye strain of computer screens and I can read of them for hours. (but still lacks the satisfying feeling to put a finished issue onto the book shelf)

@DavidCarlisle Adding into the essentially user error case, spacing above \begin{equation}… in vertical mode is fine unless it's \begin{equation}\begin{split}… then there's extra space.

7:59 PM
@samcarter Unless the Kindle iPad app counts, no I haven't yet tried one.

8:32 PM
@DavidCarlisle, @JosephWright -- Oh, no! nytimes.com/2021/09/17/world/europe/…

8:51 PM
@DonHosek without amsmath it's the same as $$ and gives you a spurious white paragraph with amsmath it's a bit better but ...
@barbarabeeton it showed me the headline for a second before putting up a paywall. But yes it's just typical nonsense. people realising that brexit means shortage of food as trade disrupted, impossible issues with Irish border, shortage of staff in social care and hospitality as euorpean workers dissuaded, so they need some benefit and naturally making everyone work mod 16 arithmetic is a good populist measure

@DavidCarlisle -- A comment ending the article is from an MP who says that no one has ever, ever requested a change of that sort, while they do complain about the inability to get necessary public services. Pretty much what you say. (Sorry about the paywall.)

9:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle I was in a cafeteria in Fátima, Portugal, and had a UK Coca-Cola can. I stared for quite some time at the deciliter thingy. We use milliliters for these...
Thankfully we ducks are very good at advanced mathematics! :)

@PauloCereda I am not sure I have ever seen a UK coca cola can, last time I had one it probably had floz as the unit

@DavidCarlisle I think you're missing what I'm pointing out: It's different behavior with amsmath depending on whether or not equation contains split. I guess it shouldn'
t be surprising given all the specialness that goes into making split work at all (it's really rather impressive in its functionality).

10:14 PM
@DonHosek but the space with a blank above equation is wrong in any case the extra space after bbb here isn't vertical space it is a paragraph with just parindent box. the split case is like using align you always get abovedisplayskip not abovedisplayshortskip
\documentclass{article}
\showoutput
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}

aaa
\begin{equation} x \end{equation}

bbb

\begin{equation} y \end{equation}

ccc

\begin{equation}\begin{split} z\\z2\end{split}\end{equation}

\end{document}
