@barbarabeeton Well, it's only as good as the input. If you're dealing with something that has masses and masses of available data, like English <> French, you would expect something passable. The less you have of data the less likely you are to be successful with auto-translating (or auto-transcribing) because the programming doesn't speak these languages. It has no knowledge of the big picture context. It can only make an educated (or not so educated) guess.

@FaheemMitha -- I wouldn't say Karl exactly runs TUGboat, but he's certainly a key player, as production manager. Another. largely unsung, contributor is Robin in the TUG office, who maintains the member records and pays the bills. I'm only the editor, trying to make sure that the content is accurate and makes sense. Remove any one of these components, and the enterprise fails.

I just don't happen to read it very often.

Possibly because my priorities tend to be (a) trying to understand what the frig TeX is doing today, and (b) making sure I can get it to do what I want.

That's usually enough effort, and TUGBoat articles don't typically enter into it much.

@barbarabeeton @samcarter Getting the print versions was an incentive for me to join TUG. I like having hardcopy when I don't feel like looking at a computer screen (which I've done too much of over the past year and a half).

@LaTeXereXeTaL Have you tried an e-ink reader? For me, this does not cause any of the eye strain of computer screens and I can read of them for hours. (but still lacks the satisfying feeling to put a finished issue onto the book shelf)

@DavidCarlisle Adding into the essentially user error case, spacing above \begin{equation}… in vertical mode is fine unless it's \begin{equation}\begin{split}… then there's extra space.

@DonHosek but the space with a blank above equation is wrong in any case the extra space after bbb here isn't vertical space it is a paragraph with just parindent box. the split case is like using align you always get abovedisplayskip not abovedisplayshortskip
