@JosephWright Paragraph building is so fast, a program could reformat it when the cursor leaves the praragraph (I am not a user interface expert, but even InDesign solves that somehow)

@PatrickGundlach I suspect that this is a such a small part of a GUI layout application that it would be as easy to use the algorithm recoded in 'your choice of language' rather than want 'TeX as a service'

But as I say, I don't have the technical skills

@PatrickGundlach Someone tried that in a "well known" word processing system and the usability studies reported that people were more concerned about text moving around on screen than they were of getting better output, so it never made it into production builds

@JosephWright There is more to TeX than paragraph building. I use boxes and glue extensively when building complex tables for example

@PatrickGundlach Yes, but the question is whether it works at the interface level, and there I'm not so sure if the entire interface is different.

@DavidCarlisle as I said, I am not a user interface expert. But I could image in a "optimize paragraphs" function that reformats paragraph when requested. The same is done when asking for hyphenation in MS word, it does that on selected/all paragraphs.

@JosephWright People are used to building web pages, then testing them in 3 browsers. TeX's algorithems look far better then web pages do these days.
