2:57 AM
I'm so excited, I've just been invited to submit a paper to Advances in Pure Mathematics because of my "excellent relative academic background". It's a great journal with excellent reviewing standards. And a real bargain at $500.

How to colour \bullet in a different colour?
say blue
also is there any command for filled triangles like \traingle
\triangle

6:01 AM
@BAYMAX \blacktriangle

yes cool
but how to make it other color like blue?

@BAYMAX \textcolor{blue}{\blacktriangle}

ooo cool
Thanks@CarLaTeX

@BAYMAX I found it in the fdsymbol package here: tug.ctan.org/info/symbols/comprehensive/symbols-a4.pdf I don't know if you're using that package or others

i see
vast database of symbols

6:20 AM
@BAYMAX Yes, also this site is useful: detexify.kirelabs.org/classify.html

yea haerd of it! awesome

You can draw a symbol directly (but sometimes it doesn't works)

yea maybe using Tikz u mean

6:38 AM
@BAYMAX No, I inteded drawing a symbol in the detexify site

oh i see cool

sometimes it doesn't find the symbol you're looking for

@DavidCarlisle but is the documentation long? :) I never said anything about code to documentation ratios.

7:33 AM
@AlanMunn Have you ever published a math paper?

@AlanMunn ooh what a deal :)

Do we normally have a solution for the situation where on has something that writes to TOC via \addtocontents{toc}{A} when immediately followed by a \include of a long chanper. Problem is that A is located in the toc after the contents from the \include eventhough it comes first in the code. We don't have an immediatelyaddtocontents that I don't know about?

11:33 AM
I made a simple immedate version, it works...

3 hours later…
2:45 PM
@AlanMunn -- Oh, charming! (Ever since a paper on which I was a co-author appeared in an IEEE journal, I've been inundated with requests to submit more. At least the requests seem mostly to be reputable. But a terrible nuisance.)

@barbarabeeton yes, IEEE is quite pushy for my tastes also. The problem is that often even the thing I am interested in are thrown into spam, given the custom of sharing address among the zillions IEEE conferences and publications. (Which I do not doubt is legal, but annoying the same)

3:01 PM
@daleif -- When using \include, for some reason, the preceding input is (almost? always) held until after the \included file has been processed. I know that \chapter works that way, so that command must be placed within the \included file. So I'd expect \addtocontents to act the same way. I haven't seen authoritative documentation, but haven't really looked. (But I'd like to know the reason,) Anyhow, if something belongs at the beginning of a chapter, put it in the chapter file.

@barbarabeeton The editor of the "journal" is at Brown. Quite weird: vivo.brown.edu/display/ldepuydt
@FaheemMitha No, of course not.

@barbarabeeton it only happens if there is a \newpage before. So something like this
\documentclass{book}

\begin{document}
\tableofcontents
\newpage
\addtocontents{toc}{blub}
\include{test}

xx %without it the addtocontents is lost completly
\end{document}

@AlanMunn -- Eek! "Professor of Egyptology and Assyriology". Well, that's a legit department, although I'm miffed that it took over the History of Math department, which was home to the founder of Math Reviews, Otto Neugebauer, when he fled the Nazis (allegedly with unprocessed manuscripts from Zentralblatt sewed into his coat lining).

@barbarabeeton Yes, it seems like he created the journal to have a place to publish his math ideas which seem totally bonkers.

@UlrikeFischer -- Since \chapter itself contains code for a new page, it's at least bad form to put \newpage there. In any case, just better to put commands like this in the \included file. Do you know where this might be documented, other than in the code?
@AlanMunn -- Interesting but sad. (Real history of math is legit and often quite interesting.)

3:17 PM
@barbarabeeton the newpage can be implicit. I don't know if it is documentated, but basically it is as you say: if you use \include you should put everything inside a file.

@UlrikeFischer -- I'll consider asking Frank. Although I'm pretty sure that \include precedes his involvement. (And I'll add this to my list of LaTeX "misfeatures/design".)

@barbarabeeton not sure about the misfeatures. I mean it is the price you pay for having different aux-files (which are needed for the \includeonly feature). \include can not create an empty page at the begin only for the case that a write is lurking around. And addtocontents can not be immediate by default as it would then overtake other additions to the toc.

@UlrikeFischer -- I agree entirely about \addcontents, but I'd really like to better understand the reason for \chapter (maybe the same), even though it really makes good sense to keep everything that belongs to a chapter (including its title) together. At any rate, I'm not sure that the documentation is sufficient.

3:33 PM
@barbarabeeton you mean why \chapter should be inside the include? You would get a new page after the heading if you don't do it.

3:46 PM
@UlrikeFischer -- Good point. I'll consider splitting my "misfeatures" list into things which I find not well thought out and things that do make sense, but always trip up users because the logic isn't explained sufficiently well. (For example, \addtocontents might be used to change the \toclevel, and seeing that in the main file is useful. Oh, well, there are always comments.)

3:57 PM
@FrankMittelbach Very kindly at 14 Italian time we were at 44 degrees; now we are at 39 or 40 degrees. You can't even breathe.

@Sebastiano Yikes. That's hot. You are in the south right?

@AlanMunn Yes I lived near Syracuse :-)
@AlanMunn This is the beach where I go every early morning for a swim.
@AlanMunn This is one of the many fish I feed bread to that I buy
@AlanMunn nature is beautiful; some fish including this one in particular come after me knowing I'm not hurting them and they know I don't want to catch them. They also let me touch them, even if many have

4:16 PM
@Sebastiano Very beautiful.

4:45 PM
@AlanMunn This is often the same result on MSE: math.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/33951/…: downvoting and closure.

@barbarabeeton for some time, Google Scholar had parsed a cafeteria lunch menu as an author list:

@PauloCereda Had I known that, I'd have definitely cited C. S. Salad in my master's

@PhelypeOleinik LOL
@PhelypeOleinik I once had a paper with a certain Dr. Giraffe somwhere.

@PauloCereda I cited Gentleman once :)

@PhelypeOleinik ooh

@PauloCereda And Shakespeare (not that one)

6:44 PM
@PhelypeOleinik I love this comment on MetaFilter about the lunch menu: This has massive implications for calculation of Erdős–Bacon numbers.
A person's Erdős–Bacon number is the sum of one's Erdős number—which measures the "collaborative distance" in authoring academic papers between that person and Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős—and one's Bacon number—which represents the number of links, through roles in films, by which the person is separated from American actor Kevin Bacon. The lower the number, the closer a person is to Erdős and Bacon, which reflects a small world phenomenon in academia and entertainment.To have a defined Erdős–Bacon number, it is necessary to have both appeared in a film and co-authored an academic paper...

@PauloCereda hahahaha

@PauloCereda -- That's just plain silly! I'm not a consumer of school lunches, haven't been for a long time, and some of those things didn't even exist when I was in school. What's "P Pack"? (Around here, "PPAC" is the Providence Performing Arts Center which isn't edible, although they do sell popcorn in the lobby.)

@barbarabeeton Peanut pack perhaps? :)
Or popcorn. :)

7:02 PM
@PauloCereda Do you know your Astley number? islandoftex.org

@StefanKottwitz ooh edit: oh no
