hello, i am a new contributor
umm
Is it okay to ask how to improve a answer here?

2 hours later…
6:06 AM
@Gomesz785 it is ok to ask, but because of the asynchronous nature of internet discussions and the way a chat works don't expect any answers. Consider asking on main if it's a TeX related question, or on meta if it's a technical question.

While running make4ht -c mycfg.cfg cv.tex, it generates cv.tmp file which contains /* css.sty */. Is it necessary to upload this tmp file alongside the html, css files on github? (tex.stackexchange.com/a/606249/114006)

does the .gitignore file not work in overleaf?

4 hours later…
11:23 AM
Ooh @FrankMittelbach is here :)

11:41 AM
@JosephWright Don't worry if you sent me the wrong link. I wish you a peaceful day.
@UlrikeFischer Hi, from your point of view what could be the solution so that I can compile correctly with feynmp? I really like the curved arrows.
I still have not received any response to my question:
0
Q: Empty or not-compilable diagram using feynmf/feynmp pacakge

SebastianoStrangely today I wanted to create a graph with feynmf/feynmp package but taking for example the @egreg's answers here I not see nothing (I compile with TeXworks). Does this anomaly happen only to me? First code: \documentclass[11pt]{article} \usepackage{feynmp-auto} \begin{document} \begin{fmf...

@JosephWright your mistaken, I only loaded a bunch of tabs into my browser :-)

@egreg Hello dear Prof. Here I am at 38 degrees; this morning at 8 am I was at sea feeding the fish. The sea water is beautiful :-) I hope it doesn't rain hail in your area.

@FrankMittelbach :)

My regards to every user into the chat.

11:58 AM
@Sebastiano Rainy day here. :-(

@FrankMittelbach Meanwhile, I'm reading over that TLC3 chapter :)
@egreg :)

@JosephWright How's the weather in the UK? Not really good, I hear.

@egreg Here, it's OK, but further south it's been very wet
@egreg Might rain on me after lunch

@Sebastiano I never used it but yesterday the one example worked when I use pdflatex --shell-escape file to compile it.
@egreg it looks as if mpost is no longer in the restricted list?

@UlrikeFischer Possibly. I have to revise a couple of packages.

12:03 PM
@UlrikeFischer Where are we with landscape, etc.?

@JosephWright good to hear :-) and I have just finished recording my talk, so that is one topic checkmarked

@JosephWright well as I wrote, I'm trying with Karl to find a way so that dvips writes the correct mediabox. I don't want to have everywhere postscript code trying to detect isls and orientations and rotating things. It makes me dizzy ;-)

@FrankMittelbach Ah, so you are going pre-recorded - worth knowing. What did you use for that?
@FrankMittelbach I think I'll get to about half-way through your original version today, hoping if I can to finish it this week (now @StefanKottwitz's book is finished)

this .. my professional recording studio :-)
software OBS

@FrankMittelbach Nice

12:12 PM
@JosephWright it takes out the issues you might encounter with live shows over zoom (with your local connection getting instable and all that

@FrankMittelbach Yes, I will probably record later in the week (I'm 'at work' so I can use my office and the mic I have here)

got myself a mic from my son's studio, and notice that this is recording on top of a board game :-)

@FrankMittelbach Downloading now (we have Camtasia as a work license, but we've moved away from it for lecture capture to a tool I can't use for stand-alone recordings)

and on top of the TeX book if you look carefully :-)

@FrankMittelbach Cool
@FrankMittelbach Nice external monitor

12:16 PM
@JosephWright I think OBS is rather a nice tool, but you need a few minutes to figure it out

@FrankMittelbach I'll fiddle about

@JosephWright I wish I could have recorded it using my new imac, but that is still being assembled it seems

@FrankMittelbach Oooh, new iMac: M1?

yep
my old windows machine is 12 years old or so .... so it was about time to get something new

@FrankMittelbach Meant to be good for video - would be (currently) less useful for me (I need Parallels, so have to have a x86)
@FrankMittelbach Sounds fair enough

12:19 PM
I think parallels works on it but we'll see ... I don't really need it any longer (and if I have it on the macbook
@JosephWright well, if it takes 10 minutes to open your mail archives then you know somehting needs upgrading :-)

@FrankMittelbach I thought they were still working on it

maybe ... as I said we'll see.

@FrankMittelbach Seems you are right: parallels.com/blogs/parallels-desktop-m1
@FrankMittelbach Yes - I can't convince it to record the screen :)

12:50 PM
@JosephWright M1...
@FrankMittelbach 'ello, Frank :)
OBS is great :)

@PauloCereda I can't get it to capture the screen ;)

@JosephWright MacOS?
It works even in Wayland, so get out of here :)

@JosephWright I managed. @FrankMittelbach can one do it step by step? So record five minutes today and then continue tomorrow?

@UlrikeFischer Yes, but that's Windows - if the Mac won't go for it, taht's what I'll do

@UlrikeFischer One could use a video editor to post-edit stuff. It's what I do. :)
user image

@TeXnician ^^ spot some similarities :)

1:20 PM
Right, worked out why my video wasn't recording

@JosephWright good :-) including a nice picture of you in the bottom corner?

@FrankMittelbach we know he is a duck :)

@FrankMittelbach Er, not at the moment: it's taken me all this time to work out how to make the video even record. Next step - why is the audio so quite. Then I have to work out how to post-process the videos. Camtasia looking attractive at the moment ...

@JosephWright Windows users... :)

@PauloCereda I'd missed the security setting and OBS doesn't complain (cf Parallels, which does if you forget to set up security right)

1:26 PM
@JosephWright I don't get it, are you running this in your virtualised Windows or in the host MacOs?

@JosephWright there is no need to reprocess unless you do it in several pars and need to combine them. Otherwise all is need is to turn its default format into mp4 which is done in the remux dialog (or you set a flag to always do remuxing automatically after recording.

@FrankMittelbach To trim off the start and end? The bit where you are switching to full screen, etc. and back out ....
@PauloCereda On the host OS: I'd not allowed screen capture so nothing was showing. I only go for Parallels when I have to: for example, there are a few bits of software that just work better that way

@JosephWright you pay them to tell you :-)

@FrankMittelbach Well true

as for audio, you go into the advanced settings (next to the meter I think) and you can boost your input ... needs a bit of fiddling but works ok unless your mic is just too bad or tooooo far away

1:30 PM
@FrankMittelbach Ah, right: I will I am sure sort it :)

@JosephWright can't give you advice on cutting and combining but there are many programs who allow you to do simple trimmings, I used premiere pro so that is probably not an option for you.

@FrankMittelbach I've got iMovie, it's just a question I think of recording in MP4 not MKV. It's just that I'm used to tools that combine recording, editing and output in a single workflow, that's all

as I said that is done in the remux menu file>remux recording
and you can avoid the step in advanced settings somewhere

@FrankMittelbach Ah, that would be handy

@JosephWright my pleasure :-)

1:54 PM
@PauloCereda That's Blue Valley, Nebraska, for sure.

@StefanKottwitz :)

2:24 PM
@PauloCereda and then came the ducks: i.stack.imgur.com/Cabt7.gif

2:42 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 ooh

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 oh, dire future...
Nice use of the TeXbook in the @FrankMittelbach photo ;-P

just grabbed something of the right height next to me. The laptop is on top of a nice board game and a great cook book for Japanese dishes ... you take what you have

3:21 PM
@FrankMittelbach ;-)

3:36 PM
@Rmano presence is dire enough: thanks to a mean water bottle and a flooding in my handbag, my primary computer is in time out hoping that it might work again after drying. Now I'm stuck with an old back-up laptop

hi @PauloCereda
I have some question about tikzduck
\duck[contour] does not work, is there a way to get only the contour ?
find
      \draw\duckpathbody;
but there is path for head

@Maïeul I'm afraid the contour option only works for the tikzlings

3:52 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 so not for duck

@Maïeul sadly no
@Maïeul I have somewhere a file with the contours of a duck (which I needed to make a t-shirt), but I don't have access to my files atm. I hope I'll be able to access the files again when my computer dried.

the handbook show us \begin{picture}(42,44)
\picduck
\end{picture}
but
I don't undertsand how to set the position / size

@Maïeul the picduck is really just a rough approximation of the shape.

it should be enough for my need

@Maïeul To change the size, maybe try to play with \unitlength
@Maïeul and for position try the usual latex hacks, like adding \hspace etc.

4:00 PM
I thing now I understand my problem
I changed unit length for another needs

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 oh no. Rice is said to be a good humidity absorber...

4:17 PM
@Rmano thx! I'll try this over night.

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 be sure it doesn't enter the ventilation grids, though. My nephew recovered a swimming-pool soaked iphone by closing it in a plastic bag with rice overnight... several years ago.

@Maïeul hi! Oh thankfully @samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 helped! I actually don't know much about it besides being a duck too. :)

ho oki

5:07 PM
@JosephWright Celebrity alert?

Why does " \cdot \dots \cdot " give dots in the same line?

@Wolgwang \dots are lower, at the base line, for me.
I just closed firefox :-o

5:24 PM
@StefanKottwitz Math stack exchange renders this...
And several other websites...

@Wolgwang Math.SE renders wrong, check this: texlive.net/run?%5C%5B%5Ccdot%20%5Cdots%20%5Ccdot%5C%5D

Thanks :-)

5:52 PM
@FaheemMitha now what is this supposed to mean?

Talk recorded, now being uploaded.

6:17 PM
@PauloCereda with music?

@StefanKottwitz of course! :)
@StefanKottwitz ooh

@PauloCereda let us convince @DavidCarlisle to add music to texlive.net output

@StefanKottwitz ooh rule Britannia

@PauloCereda \rule Britannia

@StefanKottwitz ooh

6:55 PM
@FrankMittelbach Just kidding.

@FaheemMitha now I expect more reverence than that :-( ... :-)

@FrankMittelbach OMG FRANK IS HERE
2

@PauloCereda Welcome to my alternate Thursdays :)

@JosephWright "oh no Frank is here"? :)

@PauloCereda he always has to write the meeting notes :-)

6:59 PM
@FrankMittelbach it's his fault for being efficient :)

well said

@FrankMittelbach hello, nice to see you.

@FrankMittelbach Sometimes @DavidCarlisle does it :)
@FrankMittelbach We should get Johannes back to do it more ;)

@JosephWright "I shall make mental notes!"

@PauloCereda Yeah, that wouldn't work so well ...

7:01 PM
@JosephWright bah, it worked for Churchill :)

@FrankMittelbach I'm over half way through the siunitx stuff: hopefully my edits will make sense

@AlanMunn OMG ALAN IS HERE

@JosephWright cool!

It's today's pattern :)
@JosephWright You gotta love CTAN, don't you? :)

@PauloCereda ???
@PauloCereda I miss the days I'd just mail Robin ...

7:03 PM
@touhami hi there ... not sure I recognize the user name though

@FrankMittelbach Er, yes: mainly removing stuff, but I hope things will be nice and tight once I'm done

it needed a lot of removal, so that is good :-)
evne though, I'm sorryspending time on writing it in the first place

@FrankMittelbach Er, you could say the same for me and that message to c.t.t. that got me into units in the first place ;)
It's all @StefanPinnow's fault

I mean writing a 20 page treaty on it was going over the top ... don't know what bugged me

@FrankMittelbach OK. another LaTeX's user.

7:08 PM
@FrankMittelbach Oh, sure: I think because there are loads of options, and that means you can write loads (I've written about 80 pages, after all: it's hardly pgf, where you can understand it!)

that much I gathered :-)

@FrankMittelbach In other news, looks like GitHub Actions is working nicely (thanks to @MarcelKrüger)

@JosephWright yes working very very well (if you remember that it is not yet in all older branches :-)
@JosephWright yeah but it was out of proportion. I mean I condensed the whole of 500 pages of tcolorbox ins 1-2 dozen pages, so doing that many examples on siunitx was just a little too much

@JosephWright someone will have to explain to me how I can see a log of a failure without downloading 100MB ;-)

@touhami I just wondered from which part of the world, given the alias

7:11 PM
@Rmano -- Rice is a time-honored additive to keep salt from caking in high humidity. I don't know how well it might work for flooded computers, but at least it shouldn't leave much residue.

@FrankMittelbach Algeria :-)

@UlrikeFischer click on the failed test not on the attachments
that was something that puzzled me first as well, but then you see more or less the same log as in travis
@barbarabeeton it works on digital cameras that end up in lake bachotek

@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 -- Eek! After sopping up all the visible liquid water, I'd be tempted to apply, very gently, a hair dryer.

@FrankMittelbach far in the south of Algeria.

@FrankMittelbach but where do I find them? I just checked a failed commit and I see a red cross beside "run l3build" and then I don't know how to see the details without having to go through 20000 lines.

7:15 PM
@PauloCereda i am?

@AlanMunn oh no

@UlrikeFischer on the bottom of that the list of failed tests? No?
@touhami ah, that explains the alias I guess, kind of French/Arabic? First thought Japanese but then the o or u would not be there
pardon my ignorance on that

@Wolgwang -- dots are in the same line if youre using amsmath. This is a case where you need \ldots` if you want the middle three on the baseline.
@StefanKottwitz -- No, not wrong. The difference is whether or not amsmath is used.

@FrankMittelbach well the botton (which is not so easy to reach, in travis I could ask for the raw log) says - ../build/test-config-lthooks/lthooks-009.etex.diff and then I don't know where I get the diff.

@barbarabeeton you've been summoned in a email. :)

7:23 PM
@UlrikeFischer well, that's strange, my browser jumps to the bottom of it automatically and you can then search inside with the "Lupe"
@UlrikeFischer well that diff wasn't in the travis logs either was it? only the execution run.
I just reran the test locally then
but perhaps it is possible to improve this, eg one coul just append the failed test diffs perhaps

@PauloCereda -- It's very slow in being delivered.

@barbarabeeton A email from Paulo Ney?

@PauloCereda -- oh, yes. All these Paulos get me very confused.

@barbarabeeton quack :)

@PauloCereda -- But, mind you, they're not interchangeable.

7:31 PM
@barbarabeeton <3

@PauloCereda -- Regardless of what the other Paulo says, I'd stick with "on". (Some things there I'll have to try.)

@barbarabeeton <3 I WUB YOU
@barbarabeeton thanks, I got even more confused than my typical confused. :)

7:47 PM
@PauloCereda -- The way you pronounce "command" makes it sound like "common". The stress should be on the second syllable.

@barbarabeeton TUG office has just sent to Paulinho van Duck the receipt of his donation registered to @PauloCereda
2

@CarLaTeX -- Oh, my! I will intervene.

@barbarabeeton I have already replied to them :D

@CarLaTeX -- Oh, okay. Would you prefer that I keep out of this?

@barbarabeeton No, no, please feel free to intervene hahaha
@barbarabeeton It's a little donation, however. No problem to me if the receipt is not correct
@barbarabeeton They have already corrected and sent me a funny picture, too

8:13 PM
@CarLaTeX -- I've sent in a little history of the Professor. On a different topic, how's the thesis?

@barbarabeeton Ops... a moment of stalemate :(

8:43 PM
Great subtitles / closed captions - turn up the volume:

@CarLaTeX -- Stalemate on the thesis?

9:16 PM
@egreg Uh...from ilmeteo.it 26° degrees tonight. These are the temperature where I lived :-( for this week. Tomorrow morning I will be underwater for at least two hours. It's impossible to stay in the sun here.

9:41 PM
@Sebastiano night values?

@UlrikeFischer Could you please add an answer after my question? Let me see if I can email the feynmp package manager. I am not able to compile with your commands.
@FrankMittelbach Ahhahahahahah...no no The left value it is for the minimum during the night. 39° instead it is the temperature of this afternoon.
@FrankMittelbach The color purple scares me. When you take the sun in the afternoon your face burns. And it also comes a hot west wind. :-(

@barbarabeeton Yes :(

@FrankMittelbach It's hard to sleep at the night :-(
@egreg @UlrikeFischer Have you thought very kind Prof., kindly, of a solution to compile or do you compile perfectly differently from me?

some people like it warm, but yes I agree. 44 during day is hard and tropical nights above 20 is not nice either
we had a summer like that last year here and I honestly measured above 50 one day after the sun had heated the stones up and there was no wind

@barbarabeeton oh thanks!

9:57 PM
@FrankMittelbach I like the heat but not being able to breathe or sleep is not comfortable. If you look at the minimum temperatures I can assure you that you get them around three or four o'clock at night. :-(

yes I understand the issue well (and fortunately it is something we don't experience much (yet) over here

@FrankMittelbach I am more and more convinced that the climate changes are more and more invasive and frequent.

@Sebastiano they sure are; unfortunately too many people are still believe this is just isolated incidents with no connection to anything

@FrankMittelbach Surely these are the same people who think, for example, that the genocide of the Hebrews never existed.

@Sebastiano different breed I guess

10:13 PM
@FrankMittelbach :-(...mah...
@FrankMittelbach In the meantime, I greet you and wish you a good rest. My best regards.

yeah about time to close the computer to take up a good book and a glass of wine .. good night
@DavidCarlisle ... no fun at the lakes?

@CarLaTeX -- Oh, dear! Is there anything I can do to offer encouragement?

10:38 PM
@FrankMittelbach been too hot until we got 3/4 way round a lake today when we got very wet, with flash thunderstorm:-)

@DavidCarlisle tough

@DavidCarlisle -- At least you didn't get struck by lightning.

@FrankMittelbach you can't really come here and complain if it rains:-)

10:53 PM
probably not ...
