@StephanLehmke Of course! And with \usepackage{coffeestain} I can also reproduce the bit where the calligrapher forgets how big the paper is. Looking carefully, the person doing that loads the pen with too much ink so that to much runs out on the first stroke. You can see the glisten and in the final product then the thick lines are not clean at the edges - they bleed into the paper (which also shows that it's not good quality paper).

@AndrewStacey I'd be happy, especially if it could handle recursive structures of an arbitrary depth. Not sure I subscribe to the original intent of the question, though. If we can't write macros because our collaborators don't grok them, the world becomes a sadder place, IMO.
@Brent.Longborough I'm hesitant at posting my method as it works from the other direction. I declare a set of "safe" macros that won't be expanded. Then everything else gets expanded until it is one of those. So it would be hard to implement for this person as they'd have to declare all of the LaTeX commands as "safe"!
@Brent.Longborough I plan to. At the moment it's at the "Works for me(TM)" stage. There's certain aspects that I'm not sure how best to handle. The easiest way is with some catcode changes, but the more I read on this site then the more reluctant I am to do things that way. For example, the conversion of '' to " is done by ligatures. I want that one. But I don't want to replace ff by its ligature. Simple solution: make ' active. Complicated solution: disable only certain ligatures.
I think you guys know the answer, I tried a lot (descripition, enumerate) but it all didn't work, so heres my problem: The text after the long items has the correct indentation on the first two lines, but the last, the 3rd. row, has a wrong indentation, so it is far to left, and this looks stupid...

The question has to be 'Will this tag be useful for searching?'. As you say, this might be a rather specialised tag, which won't therefore help very much.
Sorry, didn't see the ensuing discussion. I figured that as this wasn't really about the nitty-gritty of multipart nodes then it certainly didn't warrant creating a new tag for it.
When plotting large values with pgfplots a common factor (e.g. 10^6) is shown on top of the axis.

@DavidCarlisle: At the German mailing list of DANTE we have discussion about the command graphicspath. In the manual l2tabu you can find the following sentences: There are several reasons why you should avoid the \graphicspath macro. Is this correct? Up to know there is nobody who has / had any problems.
@MarcoDaniel I feel that advice is out-of-date, myself. I never have an issue with \graphicspath, and for portability it seems much easier than setting variables. I want the same structure (<paper>\figs) for all my docs, but want each one to have its 'own' figures, etc., so for me \graphicspath is the best approach.

@MarcoDaniel It works OK but it's painfully slow if you over-use it. Setting TEXINPUTS is much more efficient of you are in an environment that makes that easy
@JosephWright well if they want it to be full width then just switch to \onecolumn for the table. If you want it to wrap over the column break that;s not too hard if you don't need table headers (there's an answer on this site somewhere) if you do want headers then you need to delve into LT more than is perhaps wise

@tohecz: You are the music expert around, so I beseech your wisdom. :) I know you like Yamaha. I'm thinking of replacing my "real" old piano for a digital one. Some people suggested me these three models: Yamaha YDP 141, Korg LP 350, and Roland RP 301. I only know Roland, since I have a RD one, but I know nothing of this model neither of the other brands. Any hints? :)
@JosephWright true but same is true of tex files \included, if sticking them in the same directory as the main file is OK, then personally I always found that the same was true of image files. If it is just {figures/} or something it really doesn't make much difference but I've seen examples where people have loads of directories , and
on a bad day tex tries each of them times each directory in TEXINPUTS times each possible extension. end users are happy it works, I suffer nightmares imagining \tracingall output.
@JosephWright @David without having looked at revtex recently (but from memory) it basically rewrites a lot of LaTeX's OR and of course if you do that then you can do a lot of things (like grids or longtable in 2col) but then of course it will break with a lot of other packages
