Hi @paulo! I just posted the above!

@JasperLoy Hi! :) I'm not versed in latexmk, but let's see what I can find out. :)

1 hour later…
1:49 AM
@PauloCereda another perl script :) - maybe it could be done in python too
0
A: How to create a PDF presentation for each available Beamer theme automatically?

cmhughesHere's a little perl script (my second in 2 days, I promise I'm not obsessed... much) that you can run as follows perl createBeamer.plx It assumes that your beamer file is slides.tex which you can change accordingly. Note there are just a few necessary lines in slides.tex, detailed below. You...

2:10 AM
@cmhughes I saw your comment on my question? Any ideas?

@JasperLoy can you remind me which one? :)
@JasperLoy found it. sorry, I don't know anything about latexmk

5 hours later…
7:46 AM
@AlanMunn Yes, of course, that's fair. It's just that for me, fonts are just like fried fish: "if it's not crisp, it's not good" :)

1 hour later…
8:54 AM
Ahoy me mates....
that should cheer up a few out there :)

9:31 AM
@MarcoDaniel Great changes! I have uploaded some more, you can check the fontspec example. I think we are mostly through and can upload to CTAN soon. (For the others: we are working on an update to the German lshort)

@percusse I can make that at home for free with nothing but a small ... TeX installation.

@AndrewStacey :-)

@AndrewStacey Including the small blotches in the lower left?

@PauloCereda @Brent.Longborough How annoyed would you be if I said that I had a TeX solution to the replace-macros question?
@JosephWright I wondered if anyone would get the reference.

@AndrewStacey You're right about that, I didn't. Sorry

9:44 AM
@AndrewStacey Everything comes from India

@StephanLehmke Of course! And with \usepackage{coffeestain} I can also reproduce the bit where the calligrapher forgets how big the paper is. Looking carefully, the person doing that loads the pen with too much ink so that to much runs out on the first stroke. You can see the glisten and in the final product then the thick lines are not clean at the edges - they bleed into the paper (which also shows that it's not good quality paper).

@percusse me neither :-)

@JosephWright What, even TeX?
@percusse Do you want to be let in on the secret, or shall I leave it as an exercise for your searching skills?

@AndrewStacey Give me a little while to come up the the reasoning.
@AndrewStacey I'm thinking about the 'millions of files' to do 'not much' aspect

@JosephWright Bizarre how the mind works. That's how I remember the difference between Indian and African elephants: "Yes! The whole Royal family: Indian." "What, all of them?" "Except Prince Charles. African: Bigger ears."
3

9:46 AM
@AndrewStacey Well TeX wouldn't be TeX without 0, now would it?

@AndrewStacey Oh little town of Bangalore
@AndrewStacey Superman: Indian!

@JosephWright Don't know that one - which series was that?

@AndrewStacey Christmas special, I think

@AndrewStacey You can leave it as an exercise but I don't exercise that much. :)
I am a terrible reader.

@percusse never seen "nip" used in the sense of "nib" I wondered if it was American English but a quick google search suggests its just an archaic form...

9:54 AM
@DavidCarlisle I think I had a sudden loss of English. I don't understand that too.

@DavidCarlisle Puts a whole new interpretation on the phrase "nip and tuck".

@DavidCarlisle OK, I got it now :) You've assumed that I read anything on Youtube other than the video.

@percusse in a shared open plan office it is best to check what a video is about before playing it. Could be @PauloCereda digging out a copy of the birdie song...

Hi mates!

@DavidCarlisle In any office, the following holds.

10:03 AM
@percusse Not true. My chief never comes to my office :D

@percusse not here obviously :-)

@AndrewStacey Woohoo! :)

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@tohecz Your da bozz man!

@percusse being boss like a boss. :)

By the way: after reading the Facebook IPO stuff in every major news site, I think I have the right to punch any economist in the face regardless of whether they are Nobel laurates or not.

10:15 AM
@percusse Well, I work in a different bulding than she does. However, this all applies to my TeX-related job chief ;)

10:58 AM
@AndrewStacey I'd be happy, especially if it could handle recursive structures of an arbitrary depth. Not sure I subscribe to the original intent of the question, though. If we can't write macros because our collaborators don't grok them, the world becomes a sadder place, IMO.

@Brent.Longborough I'm hesitant at posting my method as it works from the other direction. I declare a set of "safe" macros that won't be expanded. Then everything else gets expanded until it is one of those. So it would be hard to implement for this person as they'd have to declare all of the LaTeX commands as "safe"!

@AndrewStacey and then you just write the file out?

11:15 AM
@Brent.Longborough I write to PDF and then use a pdf-to-text converter to extract the text. It's part of my latex-to-other-markup system.

@AndrewStacey Ewww!
@AndrewStacey But interesting! Are you going to publish it? I could certainly use a brilliant LaTeX-to-(x)html converter!

11:41 AM
@Brent.Longborough I plan to. At the moment it's at the "Works for me(TM)" stage. There's certain aspects that I'm not sure how best to handle. The easiest way is with some catcode changes, but the more I read on this site then the more reluctant I am to do things that way. For example, the conversion of '' to " is done by ligatures. I want that one. But I don't want to replace ff by its ligature. Simple solution: make ' active. Complicated solution: disable only certain ligatures.

12:02 PM
@AndrewStacey And do you care on what font do you use? Because defining a font with letter ligatures disabled might be a way to go.

1:00 PM
How about closing this one as "Not a real question"?

Q: itemize indentation

HalifaxinusI think you guys know the answer, I tried a lot (descripition, enumerate) but it all didn't work, so heres my problem: The text after the long items has the correct indentation on the first two lines, but the last, the 3rd. row, has a wrong indentation, so it is far to left, and this looks stupid...

@lockstep OK: stops further downvotes

@lockstep I would not hurry that much

@tohecz The questioner is not registered, so I'm not sure we'll get further information

@PauloCereda Nice

@tohecz I wouldn't have suggested to close if the score had been zero or positive.

1:07 PM
@lockstep Why? So far it's not a real question. As Joseph said the questioner isn't registered.

@MarcoDaniel Without the negative score (-3) I'd rather wait a few more days.

Q: Chinese restaurant process and Dirichlet process in TikZ

HarrisI am new at TikZ and I have been trying the last 3-4 days to make a couple of graphs with it so I could put them in my talk. I mostly succeeded but I still can't do two of them: 1) I want to make 4-5 circles in the same row (that represent tables of a restaurant) and numbers outside of the table...

@lockstep Indeed.

or too involved + do-it-for-me

@percusse Indeed -- voted.

@lockstep Thanks.

@percusse Yup

and probably this is indeed too localized (for those who can read the comment under the deleted answer)

Some genius bro just solved my latexmk question. Everyone go upvote him! tex.stackexchange.com/questions/67859/…

@JosephWright ok you convinced me ;)
@JasperLoy btw I like the statement "Note the output has been truncated to fit maximum question length."

1:40 PM
@tohecz No, I don't because the whole thing gets converted to text format at the end anyway. So you're right: that probably is the right way to go.

members of typography council, can you give me an advice on how to write the following subsection name without killing small animals?

@percusse Voted, but also left a comment saying "If you unlocalise, please ask again"

other than switching to two,three...
@AndrewStacey Thank you.

@percusse I clicked on that link and immediately heard the squelch of small kittens being thrown into the Thames so you're too late.
@percusse "Channel Control Architectures for 2,3,4, and 5 Elephants"

@percusse You could write out "Two-"

1:49 PM
@AndrewStacey No matter what you do, I can't get the reference. :P Either yours or @lockstep 's solution are the available solutions probably.

@percusse Which reference are we talking about now? How about "Everything you ever wanted to know about 2-,3-,4-, and 5- Channel Control Architectures but were afraid to ask" or "English, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-Channel Control Architectures" and then end with "Of course, crossing the English channel is an exercise we leave to the reader"

@AndrewStacey Heheh. I'll go with German typography rule. Die Kätzchen Die. (it would be funnier if the artikel wasn't das for kitten)

@percusse and what is wrong with it? Technical paper, technical subsection title...

@tohecz The numbers don't match in terms of the font. I'm an engineer I don't care about correctness :)

@percusse LOL

2:00 PM
@percusse What about adding "The" at the beginning, and using oldstylenums

When I saw the title for this one I so hoped it was from gaming not game development:

tehtrosDISCLAIMER I don't pretend to know anything about licensing. In fact, everything I say below may be completely false! Backstory: Recently, I've been looking for a decent game engine, and I think I've found one that I really like, Cafu Engine. However, they have a dual licensing plan, ...

@tohecz I've converted the numbers to words, unfortunately. I prefer dogs anyway.

@percusse dogs? what do you speak about? parrots!

@tohecz bad link to killing kittens

@percusse And lovely araras? :)

2:03 PM
@PauloCereda Speaking of which, did you interview yourself already?

@percusse I'm afraid of asking questions to myself. :P

Monologues on TeX, LaTeX and friends. Springer-Verlag, 2012

@percusse I believe the date should be 2011, because everything gets released before it is released

@PauloCereda How did it store in the first place?

2:06 PM
@percusse Another good question. :)

@PauloCereda Copy to billboard instead?

I was looking for a good Hex editor (typo: I first wrote HeX instead) for Mac and found this screenshot. I can only think of the developer deliberately writing this message just to make a point of the app supporting this feature. :P
@percusse LOL
For those interested: ridiculousfish.com/hexfiend

@lockstep it should read -36mu of course

2:49 PM
@PauloCereda I wonder how much emacs can work with? Mac gets the very nice aquaemacs, I've heard goodo thigns about it

@Canageek Oh good idea! :) I forgot about the built-in hex editors in emacs and vim. :)

Does tag really make sense?

Q: multipart node to represent a byte

rpapaI am trying to create a multipart node to represent a byte I wish I could write \{Byte 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 0} or \Byte {0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 0} and obtain \documentclass[12pt]{standalone} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{shapes.multipart} \newcommand{\Byte}{ \node [rectangle split,rectangle split...

@tohecz Shouldn't it at least be something like 'tikz-multipart' or something?

@Canageek well, do we need a tag for every tikz library?
and yes, at least it should be tikz-multipart

@tohecz I have no idea. Thus the 'at the very least'
I generally don't oppose many tags, since it doesn't harm anything.

3:03 PM
Maybe a mod opinion would be welcomed now... @JosephWright
@Canageek On the other hand, tag with 1 question is useless.

@tohecz What on?

@JosephWright see like 7 messages up

I assume the tag question

yep

@tohecz True. And I don't know enough about Tikz to tell how much that is used

3:05 PM
The question has to be 'Will this tag be useful for searching?'. As you say, this might be a rather specialised tag, which won't therefore help very much.

My experience is that when you plan to ask a question and you state your question well, the related questions arise by the instant search feature.
@JosephWright And as well, in this case the question is more about \foreach than about multipart

Sorry, didn't see the ensuing discussion. I figured that as this wasn't really about the nitty-gritty of multipart nodes then it certainly didn't warrant creating a new tag for it.

Hi folks!

Hi All Good evening (here atleast).
Hi @PauloCereda: Need a help

@HarishKumar Hi! Sure! :)

@PauloCereda: There must be a dupe of thi tex.stackexchange.com/questions/67932/…, which I am not able to find. Can you help please?

4:33 PM
@HarishKumar This one is close: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/53698/… :)
@JosephWright: I learned a new adjective, ropey. :)
I'll try to use the UK pronounciation from now on. :)

I see from transcript that Bangalore has been briefly mentioned but I don't understand the comment at all. :(

@KannappanSampath Oh little town of Bangalore, famous Christmas carol

@JosephWright I see!

@KannappanSampath :-)

In any case, folks, today has been tiresome. I am gonna sleep much earlier than usual. Bye folks! :)

@JosephWright You could record yourself playing it in the clarinet for our Christmas message this year. :)

@percusse hi there! looks like your comment solved this question- fancy writing an answer?

Adium is the best AIM ever. No wonder it's a duck. :)

@PauloCereda I used to have Adium installed, but at the moment don't need an IM, so no duck there. But I do have CyberDuck :-)

@JosephWright ooh another epic duck. :) I love CyberDuck, it's one the best Mac apps. :)

5:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle: At the German mailing list of DANTE we have discussion about the command graphicspath. In the manual l2tabu you can find the following sentences: There are several reasons why you should avoid the \graphicspath macro. Is this correct? Up to know there is nobody who has / had any problems.

5:36 PM
@MarcoDaniel I feel that advice is out-of-date, myself. I never have an issue with \graphicspath, and for portability it seems much easier than setting variables. I want the same structure (<paper>\figs) for all my docs, but want each one to have its 'own' figures, etc., so for me \graphicspath is the best approach.

@JosephWright Indeed. I have the same experience ;-)

5:54 PM
@percusse we really need to do something :-)

Let me fill with viola jokes
How is lightning like a violist's fingers?
    Neither one strikes in the same place twice.
How do you keep your violin from getting stolen?
    Put it in a viola case.
What's the difference between a violin and a viola?

        The viola burns longer.
        The viola holds more beer.
        You can tune the violin.

We all know that a viola is better than a violin because it burns longer. But why does it burn longer?
    It's usually still in the case.
How do you get a viola section to play spiccato?
    What's the difference between a viola and a trampoline?
        You take your shoes off to jump on a trampoline.
    What's the difference between a viola and an onion?
        No one cries when you cut up a viola.
    What's the definition of a minor second?
        Two violists playing in unison.
@PatrickGundlach This one is my apology to you. I don't get it anyway.
 Note: the following joke is very funny in German, but doesn't translate well into English.
Was sind die drei Lagen auf der Bratsche?
    Erste Lage, Notlage, und Niederlage.
(What are the three positions of the viola?
    First position, emergency, and defeat.)

(I can shoot back)

@MarcoDaniel It works OK but it's painfully slow if you over-use it. Setting TEXINPUTS is much more efficient of you are in an environment that makes that easy
@JosephWright well if they want it to be full width then just switch to \onecolumn for the table. If you want it to wrap over the column break that;s not too hard if you don't need table headers (there's an answer on this site somewhere) if you do want headers then you need to delve into LT more than is perhaps wise

How the London 2012 ending ceremony should have happened:
1.5 million people. :)

@DavidCarlisle I've never had an issue, and my problem with TEXINPUTS is that it means the document does not 'explain' how the files should be laid out
I can copy a directory tree from one machine to another using \graphicspath and with no special editor set up the file will still compile. Using TEXINPUTS requires each machine is correctly 'prepared'.

@tohecz: You are the music expert around, so I beseech your wisdom. :) I know you like Yamaha. I'm thinking of replacing my "real" old piano for a digital one. Some people suggested me these three models: Yamaha YDP 141, Korg LP 350, and Roland RP 301. I only know Roland, since I have a RD one, but I know nothing of this model neither of the other brands. Any hints? :)

8:01 PM
@JosephWright true but same is true of tex files \included, if sticking them in the same directory as the main file is OK, then personally I always found that the same was true of image files. If it is just {figures/} or something it really doesn't make much difference but I've seen examples where people have loads of directories , and
on a bad day tex tries each of them times each directory in TEXINPUTS times each possible extension. end users are happy it works, I suffer nightmares imagining \tracingall output.

@JosephWright @David without having looked at revtex recently (but from memory) it basically rewrites a lot of LaTeX's OR and of course if you do that then you can do a lot of things (like grids or longtable in 2col) but then of course it will break with a lot of other packages

@FrankMittelbach That seems to be the case, I agree

@cmhughes Thanks for the pointers. It might be better to close it though, the question doesn't make too much sense.

@percusse which question are we talking about? :)

I've voted now.
@cmhughes The pgfplots thingy that you have linked above.

@percusse oh, ok
@percusse is there a way to find the chat messages just between you and I?

9:54 PM
@percusse ok. too localized then?

@cmhughes I think so.

@percusse are you sure you don't want to answer it? perhaps you could improve the question too? otherwise I'll happily vote to close

@cmhughes I would have answered it if I could somehow understand the problem. Please feel free to answer if you do. Somehow, OP found a way to solve the problem.

@percusse no idea! voted to close :) it's not like there's a shortage of tikz questions here on tikzexchange..... oops, I meant tex exchange
:)

@cmhughes Hehe, indeed. I wonder how long it would be like this. They are becoming harder and harder.

This one can be closed as too localized (problem was due to not using BibTeX and has been solved according to OP's comment): tex.stackexchange.com/q/67979/3954

10:27 PM
Nop; apparently the problem is not solved.

@GonzaloMedina Oops the last vote was mine. :)
@GonzaloMedina Let's vote for reopening then? :)

@PauloCereda No; it is too localized... comments are still active so I think the problem can be solved there.
And in fact, it has been solved!

Yay! :)
