12:33 AM
@JosephWright Excellent. Thanks!

4 hours later…
5:01 AM
I left off the -shell-escape argument to lualatex, and unexpectedly got the following error:
/tex/luatex/lualibs/lualibs-basic-merged.lua:378: attempt to call a nil value (
field 'cpath specification')
stack traceback:
        ...e/texmf-dist/tex/luatex/lualibs/lualibs-basic-merged.lua:378: in local 'loo
kup'

        /home/faheem/texmf/tex/luatex/smyt.lua:3: in main chunk

This looks like it failed to import a Lua file (or whatever the term is). I wonder why that would be affected. But I suppose to find out I'd have to produce a MWE.

I don't think you can load compiled lua libs without shell escape but the error message could be nicer. MWE would (as ever) be useful..

2 hours later…
10:46 AM
@DavidCarlisle If I had an MWE, should I post it on the site?
This one is probably very obvious, but I'm missing the point, clearly. See gist.github.com/ff7ff4ccf3b50063421ff3e1fe8ac26b
The numbering for Table goes from 1 to 3. I've tried variations, and don't see why this is happening. I could post on the site, but usually it's not worth it for something obvious.

@FaheemMitha you have a longtable in a table, which makes no sense?

@DavidCarlisle I thought the table was a float thingy. And longtable was the equivalent of tabular. In any case, is it OK if I replace it with \begingroup and \endgroup instead?

@FaheemMitha why are you doing that at all?

@DavidCarlisle Why am I doing what? Using \captionof?

@FaheemMitha yes and why do you want to put longtable in a group

10:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle So that \captionof won't complain.

@FaheemMitha if you don't use \captionof it won't complain either

And \captionof is for a caption. Per my understanding, \captionof can be used if you don't have a float.
As least, that's per my memory of it.
@DavidCarlisle If I don't use \captionof I won't have a caption.

@FaheemMitha if all else fails you could look at the longtable documentation or any of the 10000 longtable examples on this site:-) it has a \caption command

@DavidCarlisle Oh.
So is it OK to use \captionof with the tabular environment, then?

@FaheemMitha but you had it inside a table environment so you could have simply used \caption

10:56 AM
@DavidCarlisle I don't really want the table environment. I don't want a float. I added it later. Let's assume the table environment wasn't there.
Just for clarity. It's OK to put tabular inside a table environment. But it's not OK to but longtable inside a table environment? Table is for floats, right?

@FaheemMitha and the floats tag 2nd highest voted question is tex.stackexchange.com/questions/8625/…
@FaheemMitha a table is an unbreakable box and a longtable is for tables that break over a page so it doesn't make sense to try (and it doesn't do anything sensible)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, but I don't need the float package to float, right? Isn't table a floating environment?
@DavidCarlisle Doesn't make sense to put longtable inside a table environment?

@FaheemMitha you could read the answers, which tell you haow to have non floating captioned tables. using float package [H] or minipage and captionof.
@FaheemMitha that's right you can not specify something is a non breakable insert and a breakable display at the same time

@DavidCarlisle So float implies breakable?

@FaheemMitha no, the opposite. as I wrote a minute ago a table is an unbreakable box

11:02 AM
@DavidCarlisle OK, so float implies non-breakable.
To go back to the version I was looking at...
I was wondering why the counter jumps there. But if \captionof increments the counter and longtable also increments the counter, that probably explains it.

11:24 AM
Oh, I see why I was doing all this malarkey. to_latex in Pandas 0.23.3 doesn't have a caption option, which only appeared in version 1.0.
I think I tried to upgrade, but failed.
Are there any ways to add a caption outside of longtable which don't mess things up?
(I've probably had this conversation before.)

@FaheemMitha use captionof of then \addtocounter{table}{-1} but that's just adding weird code to fix other broken weird code, if you are using longtable then you should use \caption,

11:41 AM
@DavidCarlisle OK. So captionof presumably increments the counter then?
Trying one more time to see if I can upgrade the Debian Pandas.

11:59 AM
Well, it's building, at least. Fingers crossed.

6 hours later…
6:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle quack

@PauloCereda dinner

@DavidCarlisle oh no

1 hour later…
7:41 PM
@PauloCereda any idea why this article has three sections? It really only needs one. redhat.com/sysadmin/3-text-editors-compared

@DavidCarlisle -- Thanks. Prospects for "Acal", "Bcal", etc.?

8:18 PM
@barbarabeeton if you are on www-math list you will get a mail about that in a bit when I have checked for "teh" (no)

@DavidCarlisle -- I'm not on the list. I guess I should be? What do I have to do to sign up? Do I need a sponsor?

@barbarabeeton I forwarded to you, no you just go somewhere click on "I promise to be good" then subscribe.
@barbarabeeton there is a "subscribe" link here lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-math

-- Bah! "503 Service Unavailable
No server is available to handle this request. "

@barbarabeeton when you clicked on the mailto link or when you sent the mail?

8:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- When I clicked ... but I've just answered your mail.

@barbarabeeton that is a local setup issue on your machine then a mailto link doesn't go anywhere other than to your mail client with a pre-filled in email for you to send

@DavidCarlisle -- But the math list isn't listed among the public lists -- and there are zillions. There's a public-mathml4 list listed, but that's not what you sent your notice to that you forwarded to me. (I guess I'll subscribe anyway. Maybe someone will say something useful there.)

@barbarabeeton no that one got made automatically when the grouop was re-started but we got the settings changed so we could keep using www-math which we have used since last century

@DavidCarlisle -- Well, I tried to subscribe, but failed because I don't know all the niggly details about the system I'd like to have mail sent to. (That's far from automatic!)

8:55 PM
@barbarabeeton you just need to send an email with subject subscribe to the admin list that's all there is to it

@DavidCarlisle -- I've now done so. But the list you show the segment of is not in the order I expect. Have just done something logical: searched for "jigsaw" and found "math". It's not in nice logical alphabetical order. Confusing!!!

@barbarabeeton yes no idea what that order is, not alphabetical and I think not chronological either

Hello! When I suggested an edit to this question I left behind a typo in the question title: it should say spmpscis and not smpscis. The edit has now been approved and I cannot correct this since a suggested edit must change at least 6 characters; I would appreciate it if someone could take a look and make the change (if they find it appropriate).
