@raf well i wouldn't do it that way, wipet avoids using all latex constructs on principle, which sometimes is fine but defining latex optional arguments that way makes no sense

@UlrikeFischer babel's \let\org@LaTeX\LaTeX probably did something slightly more useful when it was written, but now \LaTeX is robust it's pretty weird.

@DavidCarlisle Well they could simply redefine in begindocument. But the babel code looks odd. Apart from the question why it cares about PU/PDI, if there is a problem with \LaTeX with some fontencodings, then this should be corrected by us, not by babel imho.

@cis -- I don't know about UK usage, but in the U.S., among "natives" whose family background is German, "wisenheimer" is reasonably common, at least it was when I was growing up.

@cis yes as I say it translated Klugscheißer but I don't think either word would be recognised in UK English I had no idea what it meant, and google translate didn't help which indicates it isn't very common in the kinds of documents that google transalte sees,

@cis that is what google translates it as, which is OK but a bit rude, smart aleck is a more polite version, clever dick (or possibly more coloquial but common as I grew up) would be "clever clogs"

@cis -- My grandparents were German. Their children (my parents, aunts and uncles) used many German phrases in their everyday (Am. English) speech, and were quite careful not to use profanity around the younger generation, so "wisenheimer" was quite acceptable. It was usually used in the context "Don't be a wisenheimer", and more often directed at boys than at girls.

Does anyone know why \documentclass[tikx, border=1 cm]{standalone} works? (tikx not tikz). It is not mentioned in the manual.

@hpekristiansen You get a warning: LaTeX Warning: Unused global option(s): [tikx]. and if you try to use any TikZ command you get an error about an undefined command

@hpekristiansen Global (class) options do not error by design, because you may pass options to packages from there, so for example, there may be a package that has a tikx option
