11:07 AM
@PhelypeOleinik with 199987z\bye it works with 199988z\bye I get Unable to read an entire line- error

@DavidCarlisle Try 199989z vs 199990z with pdflatex. The latter I get the Unable to read error, while with the former I get the Emergency stop

11:24 AM
@PhelypeOleinik I get unable to read with both, and with one less, it works

11:36 AM
hello, how to make "|" bigger $\arctan(x)|_{0}^{+\infty}$

oooo thank you
thank you very much

1 hour later…
1:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle birthday quack

@PauloCereda birthday dinner happy birthday

@DavidCarlisle oh no awwww <3

@DavidCarlisle Hmm... Cygwin? I'm on the phone now. I'll check later

1:30 PM
@PhelypeOleinik yes

@PhelypeOleinik crystal ball guess: \r\n versus \n?

@Rmano I don't think so (or at least my files don't have dos endings although the engine may have different behaviour looking for possible \r I suppose.

@DavidCarlisle I was thinking that maybe something strange happens if the buffer is full with the \r when looking for the \n --- I suspect that the TeX engines only see \n normally?

@Rmano yes but the input I used had no \r

Ah. Hmmm. I'll stop, I am not sure if I understood. I suspected that the emergency stop was caused by looking for a \n after a \r with a full buffer...

1:48 PM
@Rmano If my files had \r\n line endings I'd have to admit that I was using Windows and that would not do at all.

@DavidCarlisle :-) maybe Phelype was using Windows ;-)

@Rmano on a recommendation from @egreg perhaps.

@DavidCarlisle Sure! When I tried to use such a machine they refused to work, but I suspect it's not only me.

@Rmano What kind of savage do you think I am? :-)
@Rmano (no, Linux with \n line endings)

@PhelypeOleinik Ouch, sorry ;-)

1:55 PM
@Rmano Just kidding. No problem :)

I'm on Linux too ;-), although the University is forcing me more and more to use Windows. My new laptop is Windows-only... :-(
They say is for safety and privacy matters (!)

@Rmano Oh, the irony :)

@Rmano Windows is OK so long as you install an X server so you have access to a proper window system.

@Rmano Another amusing thing is when people send email that ends with an "Avast: free of virus" signature
@DavidCarlisle Windows' windows aren't good windows

@DavidCarlisle Yes, done that. But reality is that I use the laptop really less that I would in Linux... I installed xournalpp and (given that the gizmo has a pen) I use it folded to review documents mainly (and to meet in Teams).

2:03 PM
@Rmano Did you get xournalpp to work properly with pens on Windows? I never managed to get the pressure detection to work on my old laptop.

@MarcelKrüger My tablet perhaps doesn't have enough sophistication for me to know :)

@MarcelKrüger No, really it sees the pen as a mouse, so it's not so nice. But workable in the end.

@Rmano I'm using the Windows version of Xournal++ as the macOS one is .. not quite as happy!

@JosephWright there is quite a bit of development going on, so I'll check periodically... but I suppose that the hw thing is difficult.

@Rmano That's sad. I thought it might be fixed now since recent versions fixed that issue under Wayland.

2:06 PM
@Rmano I have two issues: one is that on macOS it can't access Documents/Downloads/Desktop for security reasons, the other is that for some reason there are a few PDFs that don't read cleanly on macOS but do on Windows
@Rmano I'm only writing text, so it's not an issue for me

@MarcelKrüger I had no time (or braveness) to do a proper bug report. Maybe sometimes I'll find the time...
@JosephWright Yes, but to be able to distinguish touch and pen would be nice. On the Wacom tablet on Linux I can write with the pen and scroll with the hand, which is nice. On windows it's a mess...

2:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle @AlanMunn a quick fix would be
\makeatletter
\AddToHook{package/before/memhfixc}{
\let\MH@old@endsubappendices\endsubappendices
}
\AddToHook{package/after/memhfixc}{
\def\endsubappendices{\def\theHsection{\theHchapter.\arabic{section}}\MH@old@endsubappendices}
}
\makeatother
I'm going to adjust memhfixc to use
\let\MH@old@endsubappendices\endsubappendices
\def\endsubappendices{\def\theHsection{\theHchapter.\arabic{section}}\MH@old@endsubappendices}

@daleif what I don't get, it why this is in a patch file. I mean why can't you simply add \def\theHsection directly to the definition? If hyperref is not loaded it won't do any harm and it if is loaded it is wanted.

@MarcelKrüger yay Wayland

3:09 PM
@daleif Thanks. I ended up creating an appendix environment and modifying the appendices code instead. This creates a cleaner user interface. My university's requirements are really weird because they want per-chapter appendices to look like chapters. I'm also trying to avoid depending on the new hook system just yet, since lots of users have older distributions or are using Overleaf.

3:24 PM
@UlrikeFischer that is probably a good idea

1 hour later…
4:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- But Canada still won't consider letting us in.
@PauloCereda -- Happy! (I didn't remember.)

@barbarabeeton thanks <3

4:48 PM
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 ooh

2 hours later…
6:23 PM
anyone any idea how I got 11 points for this?

yo'
@DavidCarlisle could you be rep capped at +11? Maybe because of -1 elsewhere?

6:39 PM
@yo' thats what I thought I did an accidental downvote that I reverted though and that doesn't show, but it possibly related, maybe it'll sort itself at next recalc. oherwise I'll need to work to get back to a 1-6 palindrome sequence:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle :)

@DavidCarlisle Either they think your answer was extraordinary good or they gave you some extra points since you have not got so many.

@DavidCarlisle that was on Palindrome Day

2 hours later…
cis
8:21 PM
Yes, hehe... I was the meaning, there is maybe sth. with ifcase.
But I am sure you would have said that.
