@JosephWright Thanks, I'll look it again in the morning. :)

2 hours later…
3:04 AM
@PauloCereda Just sent a USB stick with a DocScape server to Brazil. I hope there will be no problems with customs ;-)
We'll have a web meeting with some guys in Brazil on tuesday.

@TeXelves: I've just been through the questions about "What is this font?" from the meta question voting to close them of duplicates of the new FAQ question. Others with closing privileges should do the same, and any others that you know of. If someone's already voted on it, it'll be in the "close votes" section of the tools.

@StephanLehmke Uh-oh. :) I wouldn't be so optmistic. :)

Hi all..
can any one tell what modification I should do to the styling in classicthesis package to get the formatting like in this paper web.ict.kth.se/~ghb/publications/documents/…

@SivaPrasadVarma You could always ask the author himself, for example by commenting on this answer: tex.stackexchange.com/a/46243/586

1:07 PM
@TorbjørnT. Thanks for the reply. Is there any way I can contact the author directly through stackexchange to get the tex file for that thesis.
@TorbjørnT. actually i think I dont have enough reputation now to comment on that post now.

@SivaPrasadVarma There's no private messages or anything like that here, so I'm not sure what's best.
@SivaPrasadVarma I can write a comment, asking him.

@TorbjørnT. thanks

@JosephWright: Can I send you/Audrey/PLK an email about the style app? :)

1:51 PM
@Paulo Reading through the blogpost-to-be, shouldn't Lyx be LyX?

@KannappanSampath Yes, it is. :) I'm reviewing and editing it right now.

Can anyone here confirm that biblatex+biber works with an updated MikTeX 2.9?

@PauloCereda Thank you. I thought I'd do it, but wanted to confirm and so on...

@KannappanSampath I'm the one to thank you. :) I'm reviewing in HTML mode, so some things might go unnoticed. :)

@PauloCereda Feel free. You can reach all of us (and some style authors) through the biblio mailing list.

1:57 PM
@Audrey Thank you very much. I'll compose an email later today. :) Mind if I send a "personal" email to you three first? I'd like to expose some ideas first before making them publicly available.

@PauloCereda Ah, OK. I think my email is the only one not publicly available. I'll drop you a line.

@Audrey I can also bug Joseph to kindly forward my email to you and PLK. :P

bug Joseph to kindly send ... how does that work? :P @Paulo

@KannappanSampath The English way, I think. :)

Heh! :-)

2:01 PM
@PauloCereda That would work. Talk soon!

@Audrey Thank you, Audrey. :)

2:46 PM
Hi! Is e-TeX considered free software?
% e-TeX is copyright (C) 1999-2012 by P. Breitenlohner (1994,98 by the NTS
% team); all rights are reserved. Copying of this file is authorized only if
% (1) you are P. Breitenlohner, or if (2) you make absolutely no changes to
% your copy. (Programs such as TIE allow the application of several change
% files to tex.web; the master files tex.web and etex.ch should stay intact.)
It reads (for me) that I am not allowed to change the source code

@PatrickGundlach Yes, for the same reason TeX is
@PatrickGundlach (At least as I understand it)

How can I make changes to my copy if I am not allowed to? That is really unfree (in the sense of OpenSource)

@PatrickGundlach Very good question
@PatrickGundlach Perhaps Karl B. might be the best person to ask: he seems to deal with these things

@JosephWright good idea, I'll do that

@PatrickGundlach I'm not sure what happens about e-TeX per se nowadays anyway, as I don't think the binaries are included in TL or MiKTeX

2:56 PM
@JosephWright I have just looked into tex.web, it has a similar statement.

@PatrickGundlach My understanding of the Knuth statement is that 'copying' means specifically creating a file called tex.web, allowing changes if the name changes

@JosephWright That is my understanding as well, but I can not see any such clause

@PatrickGundlach Certainly this must have been addressed for pdfTeX (used to be a .ch file, now a .web file)
@PatrickGundlach Knuth wrote TeX long before licenses became important in that sense

@JosephWright but that still gives me a (small) uneasy feeling about experimenting with TeX the program

@PatrickGundlach As I say, this must have been addressed, e.g. by Debian legal

3:01 PM
@JosephWright I'll wait for a response from Karl, he will know for sure

@PatrickGundlach True. You can always use a .ch file, as that does not involve changing etex.web

@PatrickGundlach Knuth's code had similar statements. When we had a long (1600 message) thread on debian-legal trying to get them to agree to LPPL (which says essentially the same thing) it basically transpired that LPPL was problematic because it enforced the "change the name if you change the source" but the tex statement was not because it was worded incorrectly so not legally enforceable.

Welcome to the TeXtalk! We have a very special guest for today: our friend Aditya Mahajan, one of the most active members of TeX.sx, 18k+ rep, 91k+ badges (including the ConTeXt badge), 310+ answers so far, and our resident ConTeXt expert. Get ready for this awesome interview!

Friends, welcome to the TeXtalk! Our interviewee today is Aditya.

Thanks for asking me for an interview, Paulo.

We are honoured to have you here with us. :)

Could you tell us a bit about yourself? :)

I grew up in India, did my graduate studies in US and now am working in Montreal, Canada (as an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering in McGill). …

@Audrey Looks OK here

Good job, friends! :)

3:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm surprised it's not enforceable, as it seems pretty clear, but what do I know

@DavidCarlisle I've heard about the long discussion about the LPPL. But reading the statement in the TeX header makes me afraid of copying the file.

@PauloCereda Nice job! :-)

@KannappanSampath Our job. :)

Well, not really, in any case, thank you. :)

I wonder if @DavidCarlisle likes the Vim part of the interview. :P

3:25 PM
@PauloCereda 91 000 badges?

@TorbjørnT. OMG!
My bad my bad my bad!
@TorbjørnT: fixed, thanks. :)

Q: Font installed in Latex but there are characters missing

user1488804I have (i thought successfully) installed a font (Gill Sans) in LaTeX. .afm, .tfm, .pfb, .fd, .vf and style files are all in place and map file has been updated. As far as I'm aware I have used the correct setup. However, after using the font in Latex and making some pdfs I noticed that there we...

Looks TL to me: others?
Or perhaps 'off topic'?

@JosephWright I'd go with OT. :)

@DavidCarlisle just skimming the articles: is TeX in public domain?
... obviously not, as the header is "% This program is copyright (C) 1982 by D. E. Knuth; all rights are reserved."
(no rain at the moment... gotta ride my bike home asap)

@JosephWright OK. Thanks!

@PatrickGundlach It used to say it was public domain and have a copyright and say you shouldn't change it. I think the PD bit got removed (but was essentially the basis fro saying that LPPL (original version) was bad but plain tex was good)

@DavidCarlisle Ah, that does sound a bit more uninforceable

4:05 PM
Suggestions for our next interviewee? :)

@PauloCereda You!
I wonder if the blog gets less traffic now that posts are only listed in that "Community Bulletin" along with "popular" meta posts? I think that the red "NEW" was more noticeable. Maybe we should put a banner up whenever there's a new blog post, or would that be too intrusive?

@AndrewStacey good plan, we even have the picture ready chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5389374#5389374

@AndrewStacey Maybe later. :) I was thinking of Audrey, Alan, percusse, Stephan, Joseph, Leo Liu, Altermundus...

@DavidCarlisle I am totally confused. That sounds much like "shared source", not Open Source. "You can look at the code, but must not alter it". And I can't find the permission to copy the executable either. The code (--version) tells me that it is lgpl, but where does it come from? Has DEK decided on lgpl?
... I'll wait for what Karl tells me.

@PatrickGundlach Mine seems clear

implying that the LGPL is needed for the support material (web2c)

4:09 PM
@JosephWright who decided it is lgpl? Is it because of the libs or is it because DEK decided so?

@PatrickGundlach back in 1979 (or even 82) (most) people really didn't worry about such things.

@PatrickGundlach I'd guess that's the web2c license

Slightly scary looking

@AndrewStacey No, looks broadly similar

@AndrewStacey Awesome! This could be a new concept for a spinner. :) Can we make an animation out of those images? :)

4:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle That doesn't help much now :-)
@PauloCereda Oh no, I wait for something to appear forever :)

@JosephWright Chemistry-related machine naming pattern. :)
@PatrickGundlach LOL my bad, bad spinner choice. :P

@PauloCereda Yes
@PauloCereda My (personal) laptop is always palladium

@JosephWright I decided to change my machine naming scheme. And I think you'll ike it: Cambridge, Oxford, London.
:)

@PauloCereda My town (Northampton) had a university in the middle ages. It got closed down for heresy :-)

There was a page about licensing with legal sentences that can almost always exploited by sneaky lawyers. So the conclusion was to skip any legally incomprehensible sentence that might cause trouble and place clear conditions that anyone can understand with clear legal hook in the end "such as in case of legal conflict, I win and you accept" :)

4:16 PM
@JosephWright Uh-oh. :) My next machine name, I promise. :)

I can't find it now. That would make things much easier. Since the rest of the world is not US and don't need ridiculous case studies for 40 pages long.

The University of Northampton was based in Northampton from 1261 to 1265. The university was established by Royal Charter after approval from King Henry III in 1261. It was the third university established in England and the United Kingdom after the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge and the twenty-second in Europe. After being advised by bishops and magnates that Northampton was a threat to Oxford, Henry III dissolved the university in 1265, and signed a Royal Decree which banned the establishment of a university in Northampton. The university's name was revived in 2...

@JosephWright Thankfully it was revived. :) I love those names, they sound cool to say out loud. :D
@percusse: I always like to bring this license up. :)

@PauloCereda I don't think it should have been, actually. I prefer the old name 'Nene College' (pronounced 'Nen')

@JosephWright Northampton is cooler to say. :P

4:20 PM
@PauloCereda yes, it was something like this.

Whitechapel - I just know it because of JtR.

@PatrickGundlach this is perhaps the clearest reasoning from the debian side as to why they thought tex was OK lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2002/08/msg00008.html

4:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle There's clear water now, and I'm keeping it that way having just checked your reputation (screenshot as it'll change soon, I guess)

@DavidCarlisle I give up on the subject for now. The most interesting post is (for me) lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2002/08/msg00122.html

ooh spooky rep! :D

@DavidCarlisle thanks for your support!

5:08 PM
@PauloCereda Doubly so, in fact.

@AndrewStacey 42 + 666 = meaning of life and... :P

@PauloCereda Exactly
@PauloCereda Your wish has been granted:

@AndrewStacey Holy TikZ, it's amazing! :D

@PauloCereda I take no credit for it: @GarbageCollector made the animation.

@AndrewStacey ooh!

@Paulo Are you behind this? :)

@KannappanSampath I wish. :) But I do love that site. :P

@JosephWright I believe that your comment here is the best answer available...

@tohecz Done

@JosephWright up-voted :)

7:03 PM
anybody know statistics well in here?

@JG not really "well", but it's just 2 years since my last statistics course...

J G
@tohecz you know anything about treatment on treated effects?

@JG probably not anything helpful to you

J G
@tohecz It's all good. :)

Friends, any hints on making \section behave like \section* (i.e, not displaying the section number), but at the same time including itself in the TOC (without numbers too)? :P

J G
7:13 PM
@PauloCereda Is it not the same way as in beamer?

@JG Quite, but I'm talking about the good old article. :)

@PauloCereda \usepackage{titlesec} \titlelabel{} would work?

@tohecz Wow! It does work! :)
Thanks @tohecz, I owe you a beer! :)

@PauloCereda You can use addsec if you use a KOMA class

@MarcoDaniel I've never used Koma, but I think I should start someday. :) It's German, after all. <3

7:17 PM
just it is a very dirty trick and I'm not sure whether they come numbered or unnumbered in TOC

@PauloCereda :-) The original developer was British (I believe)

@tohecz They came numbered, but I'm looking if tocloft can help me here. :)

well, the origin of the trick is somewhere here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/67336/…
@PauloCereda then try \let\numberline\@gobble

@tohecz Oh my, another beer. :)
Thank you very much, @tohecz. :)

you're welcome
but the problem is that albeit being Czech, I don't drink beer shrug
(btw, these "dirty little LaTeX tricks" are very fragile with more packages added, so I hope they won't break something in the future)

7:24 PM
@tohecz Neither do I. :) I can offer a glass of juice then. :)

nice :)
do you use header marks? because I think that none of these two tricks would remove the numbers there...

@PauloCereda If you need such a level more often you should define one ;-)

@MarcoDaniel :P

@MarcoDaniel now I lost you...

\newcommand\mysec[1]{\phantomsection\section*{#1}\markboth{}{#1}\addcontentsline{toc}{section}{section}{#1}}

7:27 PM
@MarcoDaniel yes, that is the "non-dirty" way

@tohecz :-)

@MarcoDaniel My version: \newcommand\mysec[1]{ MAGIC HAPPENS HERE }
I'm too lazy. :)

I like these strange tweaks, just to show how nicely you can manipulate LaTeX

@tohecz Indeed

Hey, don't star that duck search engine! :P

Q: Rendering a 870 mb latex file

Joshua HermanI have a tikz file that is 870 mb and I want to compile it using some latex. How can I achieve this? I have tried increasing the amount of main memory to latex to the maximum and it still doesn't render. Currently I get the following output while compiling. http://pastebin.com/4bD9r1Ld

Q: How to create simple graph in latex.

tmkHow to create simple graph in latex. x,y axis with straight line drawn at (0,0) at 45 degress through the x,y axis. The graphs here are excellent but just too complicated for newcommers.

I see a potential problem: the image has nothing to do with the graph described in the question.

@PauloCereda Yup: not even a plot, really

@JosephWright Indeed.

there must be somewhere that you can inject \beginR into longtable that dpesn't induce a tail recursive infinite loop.
