@yo' But answering your question no, no built-in way of doing that. I do have a half-written package that implements printf syntax in expl3. It does all integer types (%d, %o, %x, %u) but it's missing the floating point types

and even %d has several modifires, so it can be tricky

@DavidCarlisle Is there something akin to the inverse of \hyphenation? That is, to tell me where possible break points are in a word? I realize I can set a word in a zero-width \parbox and it will visually show me the hyphenation points in the word. However, that approach is purely visual and (to my knowledge) can't be exploited by code to know the breakpoints.

@StevenB.Segletes er well \showhyphens could be modified (especially the version used in xetex/luatex) which does more or less as you say then post processes the boxes generated

@StevenB.Segletes -- You might take a look at the file tb0hyf.tex in the package hyphenex on CTAN. It's the cumulative list of hyphenation exceptions for the default (U.S.) patterns. It uses \showhyphens to report what actually happens with a word. Obviously the exception values are added by hand, in a way that the hyphenex program can build a useful \hyphenation{...} list. This isn't exactly what you want, but you might find something useful.

@wtsnjp hi we are planning to change the back end at learnlatex from latexcgi.xyz to texlive.net (exactly the same except that it has twice as many cores and 90G free space instead of <1G), platex examples should work as before, but if additional fonts would be useful, it will have the space to add them now.

@UlrikeFischer yes that was the issue last time I can always run a document without timeout directly on the server to fill the cache if that's going to be a issue (or allow more time generally, its set to 15s currently which ought to be enough for most things

@UlrikeFischer Well I just retyped the tree to make an example for you and it is now working. Maybe I had a spurious space which caused it to think it was markdown rather than latex.
