8:27 AM
@DavidCarlisle don't you like 0x? :)

@barbarabeeton Ooooh! Never looked at their eyes that closely. I've only seen them strolling along in nature documentaries. :p

@Plergux ooh I have a story
@Plergux About 20 years ago, there was a bloke here who worked for the Discovery channel, he was one of those nature documentary narrators. One day, at mass, he was asked to do one of the readings. It was so funny: when he finished reading, everybody was in awe. The priest looked at him, as if saying, "would you like to read the rest of the readings too, please?" :)

8:46 AM
@PauloCereda :D That's a talent. Some people have it, some don't. Like whatever they say you're like, "I believe you! Tell me more!" :p

@Plergux Exactly!

@PauloCereda youtu.be/dIPuo9oYTew (sorry it's (old) Italian) but this guy is a Narrator (with uppercase N).
...and by heart. :-O

@Rmano ooh Roberto Benigni
Tell me he will scream Buongiorno principessa at some point! :)

@PauloCereda not here :-)

@Rmano This is very impressive!

8:56 AM
I have a verse of Dante's Divine Comedy in the circuitikz manual ;-)

@Rmano ooh
@Rmano maybe we could convince the Dante bloke to include a circuit made with circuitikz in his Comedy sequel... :D

@PauloCereda :D

@Rmano after all, surely he has to include another circle of hell for those who do bad typography
^^ ooh LaTeX kernel

9:20 AM
@Rmano Roberto Benigni is just a genious. :D Saw him first in Down By Law (Jim Jarmusch). Didn't speak a word of English but that was the whole point really. :p
@Rmano I have Dantes Inferno in Icelandic :p

@Plergux wow

9:34 AM
The book has the Italian text too :) The beginning:
"Á æviferðar minnar miðjum degi
í myrkri þrungnum skóg ég staddur var
og villzt ég hafði burt af beinum vegi.

Ég fæ vart orðum lýst hve leiðin þar
var loðin, dimm og villt, það veldur beygi
er hefst á ný við hugans minningar."

@Plergux That's fun! In my first book (lost ages ago --- this is or at least was mandatory reading in school) I had a version with side-by-side original and modern Italian translation... and sometimes it was sorely needed.
The best verse (I use it when starting a difficult subject in class) is the start of Chant III --- "Per me si va..."
Also the "Vuolsi così colà dove si puote ciò che si vuole, e più non dimandare" is very useful to cut annoying questions ;-)

@Rmano :D On English scale Dante would be sort of half way between Beowulf and Shakespeare, language evolution wise :p (Beowulf English is actually more intelligable to Icelanders than to modern English speakers. :p )
@Rmano XD

9:55 AM
@PauloCereda not when asked to give a unicode code point no ( and -h didn't help) don't tell @UlrikeFischer but I had to look at the documentation.
@Plergux "I won the election"

@DavidCarlisle ...and then again, some people believe anything. :p
My list of best Italian poets ever:
1. Dante Alighieri
2. Francesco Gabbani
XD

@DavidCarlisle is U+DF equal to U+00DF?

@PauloCereda yes the 4 digit form is preferred I believe (and then 6 and 8 digit not 5) although in theory I think you are supposed to use - for the extended ranges not often done. let me find the spec

@DavidCarlisle That's exactly why I tried to avoid. :)
@DavidCarlisle this is already sounding too complicated. :)

@PauloCereda on input it doesn't matter does it if you just treated U+ as 0x then if a user does U+00DF or 0xDF or 0x00DF it woul djust work?

10:07 AM
@DavidCarlisle it should. :)

@PauloCereda actually I think they simplified that a bit I can't find where it is specified but the unicode spec has U+1FFFF with five digits so I think they use U+ with 4 5 o4 6 digits now.

@DavidCarlisle one reason for sticking with 0x. :)

@DavidCarlisle but luatex complains, you have to use ^^^^^^01FFFF ;-)

@DavidCarlisle of course, changing the regex is not a problem at all. :)

@PauloCereda but as David said, if you simply allow U+ it should work (and it would be helpful)

10:13 AM
@UlrikeFischer oh no :)

@PauloCereda well not really as you don't need to enforce this there is no harm in accepting U+7 and ringing the bell.

@DavidCarlisle /ding

10:28 AM
@PauloCereda oh the breakfast gong

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle See Skype
@DavidCarlisle, @PauloCereda Stats not bad yesterday for LL: I suspect they will drift upward
I'm told my tweet got 13000 'impressions'

@PhelypeOleinik LOL

11:40 AM
Didn't we have a discussion at one point about it being more optima (speed wise) to convert PNGs to PDF such that the engine did not have to do the convertion on each compilation? Was wondering if we had any pointers to that (in manuals etc)?

yo'
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle and others: Thanks again for the Learn LaTeX thingy -- I believe this is so great! And so do many other folks at Overleaf. It will definitely go to the list of resources we provide to the unversity partners!

@daleif @Skillmon might be a good person to ping for this

@daleif there are some remarks in the pdftex manual.

12:16 PM
Thanks

@yo' :)

@PauloCereda thanks

12:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle my pleasure
@DavidCarlisle we won't release right now though, maybe we will implement a couple of other features.

@daleif during my time at Overleaf I had some empirical data on this (because the first goto solution when users where facing timeouts was to convert PNGs). I remember that there was a project in which the comipilation time was cut down to a fifth, just by converting PNGs (and/or EPS with pdfLaTeX). But other than that I don't have good sources for this.

yo'
@daleif I don't have hard data, just the Overleaf experience

@yo' see above :)

yo'
@Skillmon oh, right :)

See below
ooh
Rabbit *rabbit;
a rabbit pointer
ooh

12:48 PM
@PauloCereda but what's the Rabbit type?

1:26 PM
The state of my Uni right now: visir.is/g/20212063416d/… O.o

@Plergux argh!

@CarLaTeX Over two thousand tons of water :(

@Plergux :O

@Skillmon I think that was my experience too. This ought to be promoted a bit more.

@Skillmon ooh
@Plergux oh my!

1:35 PM
@Plergux at first I though: "Oh my, they really cleaned that floor until it shines!"

@Skillmon Yes, well, the flood polished it good. :p

@JosephWright Why the design section has to be in github.com/learnlatex/learnlatex.github.io/blob/master/… ?

@PauloCereda I think so people knew what is happening: can go now

@JosephWright I think the articles should be separated from the website design. I'd suggest creating a proper repository for them and git submodule it into the design thingy.
As it is now, one wants to contribute to the project and gets a free Ruby install

@PauloCereda Articles?
@PauloCereda Ah, right: I saw 'something odd'

1:47 PM
@JosephWright the lessons, I don't know the name

@PauloCereda Oh, right, I think I see what you mean

@JosephWright even languages could be split in this sense.

@PauloCereda IO think that was for Netlify ...
@PauloCereda Yes, I see that: starts getting a bit ... intricate

yo'
@Plergux oh :(

@JosephWright don't sweat on it, please... it was just a comment
Despite the Ruby mention which was caustic, the rest wasn't. :)

1:50 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, don't worry: I found I had to set up LFS ... which was weird

@PauloCereda I need to check but I don't think any of that is being used

@PauloCereda Did you get pinged by the new discussion?
@DavidCarlisle Should we ask Jonas to clean up?

@yo' Took the fire brigade twelve hours to pump all the water out. O.o

@JosephWright yes

yo'
@Plergux are you used to getting cellars flooded by water from intense rains/floodings? It's common here actually. I can tell you, if it was clean water, the damage is much lower than when it's floods!

2:03 PM
@JosephWright so what will be left?! :)

yo'
Still, 2000 m^3 of water is soo much!

@JosephWright I don't think I did...

@PauloCereda :)

@PauloCereda just the important bits davidcarlisle.github.io/latexcgi/test
@PauloCereda oi that page is broken, who re-arranged the patahs at learnlatex.org :-)
fixed

@yo' It was a ruptured water main. :| So clean water, yes, but several of the central computer and conference rooms were flooded, as well as the bookstore. :(
@yo' 150cm of water. Some of the doors broke from the pressure.
@yo' Fortunately the house where we store the Icelandic Sagas manuscripts escaped!

yo'
2:16 PM
@Plergux I first read library, which would be too bad as things in a library are unpriceable. Bookstore still sucks, but at least it's new books, so it's only money and hassle in the end.

2:27 PM
@yo' Yeah, that is true. But considering that the Uni is uninsured (state run institutions are never insured) it's still quite a blow.

2:46 PM
@JosephWright well I never
@JosephWright also... are you aware? :)

3:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle Is there some archive of older amsmath versions?

@JosephWright please remove my joke above to avoid problems. :)

@PauloCereda Done

@JosephWright TY

3:20 PM
@campa well I have texlive 2016,17,18,19,20 on this machine or you could look at the texlive svn going back forever or the latex2e github since we "reclaimed" it from the AMS
@campa there have only been very minor changes since 1993 though, mostly relating to luatex support

@DavidCarlisle Background: I stumbled upon this old answer of mine where I wrote something about some lines being commented out in the amsmath code. I noticed they aren't any more. Right now I have TeXlive 2017, the answer is from 2018 so I probably had TeXlive 2014 (?). I was just curious to find out when those line have been deleted.
@DavidCarlisle Wait, I think I've been thinking of something different. Anyway I've found the svn, thanks for the tip!

@campa I just checked the (2017) version that is teh first version we checked in to the latex git, and it has no commented out code related to arrows

3:57 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yeah, TeXlive 2017 is my current version too, but probably I was remembering wrong. Dunno, as I said I've found the svn so I'll look into it. Many thanks again for the tip.

4:30 PM
@samcarter_says_quack wait what?! twitter.com/hyxpk/status/1352284832689057792

@Skillmon ooh

5:27 PM
@Plergux -- There's a book about giraffes: "Tall Blondes: A Book about Giraffes", by Lynn Sherr. I enjoyed it. You might too,

@barbarabeeton ooh giraffes

@samcarter_says_quack I cannot wait for the daily strip. :)

@PauloCereda That's the advantage of the body building ducks: they won't fit in @DavidCarlisles oven :)
@PauloCereda totally :)

@PauloCereda mmm, with the greyscale image it is hard to say if David has green hair :)

@samcarter_says_quack ooh

yo'
8:12 PM
@samcarter_says_quack Whenever I met him, he didn't...

@yo' Same for me, but maybe he dies his hair grey when he is about to meet with tex people so they will recognise him?

8:42 PM
@samcarter_says_quack are you sure it's not a colour image?
