@Plergux That's fun! In my first book (lost ages ago --- this is or at least was mandatory reading in school) I had a version with side-by-side original and modern Italian translation... and sometimes it was sorely needed.

The best verse (I use it when starting a difficult subject in class) is the start of Chant III --- "Per me si va..."

Also the "Vuolsi così colà dove si puote ciò che si vuole, e più non dimandare" is very useful to cut annoying questions ;-)

@Rmano :D On English scale Dante would be sort of half way between Beowulf and Shakespeare, language evolution wise :p (Beowulf English is actually more intelligable to Icelanders than to modern English speakers. :p )

Didn't we have a discussion at one point about it being more optima (speed wise) to convert PNGs to PDF such that the engine did not have to do the convertion on each compilation? Was wondering if we had any pointers to that (in manuals etc)?

@daleif during my time at Overleaf I had some empirical data on this (because the first goto solution when users where facing timeouts was to convert PNGs). I remember that there was a project in which the comipilation time was cut down to a fifth, just by converting PNGs (and/or EPS with pdfLaTeX). But other than that I don't have good sources for this.

@campa well I have texlive 2016,17,18,19,20 on this machine or you could look at the texlive svn going back forever or the latex2e github since we "reclaimed" it from the AMS

@campa there have only been very minor changes since 1993 though, mostly relating to luatex support

@DavidCarlisle Background: I stumbled upon this old answer of mine where I wrote something about some lines being commented out in the amsmath code. I noticed they aren't any more. Right now I have TeXlive 2017, the answer is from 2018 so I probably had TeXlive 2014 (?). I was just curious to find out when those line have been deleted.
