@AlanMunn -- Not stellar. I believe that even the NYT has eliminated a great deal of copyediting though. At least everything is spelled correctly. But it reminds me of another horror that I see more and more often: "State X has more Y than any state in the U.s." Whatever happened to "other"? Or "else" that should follow "anyone" in similar constructions? That shows an even dimmer grasp of arithmetic.

7 hours later…
6:42 AM
@DavidCarlisle It's definitely an engine bug, you can trigger in plain LuaTeX e.g. with
\setbox0\hbox{"}
X-\unhbox0
\bye

7:15 AM
@barbarabeeton It follows that state X is not among the set of states in the U.S. Viva la revolution!
@cis just becaues it isn't defined in the kernel, or in amsmath, doesn't mean that it isn't defined all the time. The bigger meaning of that reply was: Code?

1 hour later…
8:38 AM
@MarcelKrüger thanks

9:09 AM
@MarcelKrüger @DavidCarlisle do you think we need some work around for the \remove@tlig until the bug is fixed? We saw now two questions in rather short time where it triggered the error.

@UlrikeFischer The remove@tlig change is version-guarded anyway, so we could just change the condition from \luatexversion<110 to \luatexversion<114

@MarcelKrüger good idea.

9:24 AM
@UlrikeFischer depends a bit if Luigi is going to push out a quick fix but they may want to leave it until tl2021 so if it could be avoided for at least some cases on your side, might be good.

10:11 AM
@Plergux The cups are so cute! As you seem to be interested in arts and crafts, maybe you like these sheep as well: youtu.be/zO_wonQZfXQ?t=133 (sorry for the language, I could not find an English version, but I hope the pictures themself explain what is going on)

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz Kein Shcade, Deutsch spreche ich auch :p SchaumSchafe! XD

@Plergux Oh, perfect!

10:53 AM
@Plergux oh, we got a polyglot sheep!

@Skillmon oui oui, Herr Skillmon, I pratar fimm sprog. XP

11:40 AM
@Plergux That's what we're here for: helping others as an excuse to procrastinate ;-)

@PhelypeOleinik XD

quack

@PhelypeOleinik I think the hyperref code revtex doesn't work well with xelatex ...

11:59 AM
@UlrikeFischer Oh, I saw that question... I'll take a look later

@Plergux ooh hallo, ich bin ein Ente und ich essen Schokolade heute

@PhelypeOleinik at the root the problem is that xdvipdfmx now chokes on this, while in earlier versions it passed:
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\special{html:<a href="h">}
abc
\special{html:</a>}
\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer It works here, but I didn't update in a while. Hold on

@PhelypeOleinik I'm not sure if linux gets new binaries in the same way as Windows.

@PauloCereda "Eine Ente" (although you are "ein Erpel") and "ich esse heute Schokolade". Still not ready for Germany ;)

12:10 PM
@TeXnician oh no
Quack quack herr person I want that yummy chocolate thingy /waves euro notes

@UlrikeFischer Apparently no, because that code runs correctly :/
@UlrikeFischer Also OP's code
@UlrikeFischer Oh, I see. revtex forces some html specials... That doesn't look good

@PhelypeOleinik revtex again?!

@PauloCereda @UlrikeFischer found a code that broke it

@PhelypeOleinik ooh

@PhelypeOleinik I can write to the xdvipdfmx list later, it should probably not choke over this special but imho revtex should be adapted too to use the special.

12:21 PM
@UlrikeFischer Indeed... Currently revtex is a bit on hold (neither me nor Mark have had time for it), but we do plan to fix some old issues that have piled up. This one has just been added

@PhelypeOleinik Coool

@JosephWright Any specific issue in mind?

@PhelypeOleinik No, I don't use REVTeX :)

@JosephWright :-)

@PhelypeOleinik is it a public repo?

12:36 PM
@UlrikeFischer No (for now; I think Mark wants to make it public)

@PhelypeOleinik ok, I wrote to the dvipdfmx list. Actually the special seem to have worked in older xelatex, I get an annotation there and the documentation explicitly mentions that it supports html specials. So it is probably really a dvipdfmx bug.

@PauloCereda Hallo Herr Ente, ich bin Schaf und esse jeden Tag Schokolade Xd

@UlrikeFischer Just saw it. Thanks! Anyway, I think it's worth removing that code from revtex (it seems to be activated only if hyperref is loaded, so it seems unnecessary)

@PhelypeOleinik I didn't really dare to check what they are all doing there. But I suspect that much of it is old and is trying to provide support for cases which you get with hyperref now directly. E.g. there is a remark "Repairing hyperref 6.75r" -- 6.75r has been released 2009-12-15.

12:53 PM
@UlrikeFischer Ouch... :)
@UlrikeFischer Though the bit that seems to insert the html: special is a bit above that, and it says:
% A class or package that wishes to employ hypertext capabilities should
% execute the \cmd\hypertext@enable@ltx\ procedure.
@UlrikeFischer Hm... There's a hypertext option that enables that...

@PhelypeOleinik I can't look now, I have to go. But I guess this need a good overhaul and cleanup ...

@UlrikeFischer No problem
@UlrikeFischer But yes, that is true for all of revtex: lots of legacy code

@PhelypeOleinik I just removed from bookmark code needed in 2007 and now I'm holding my breath is someone complains ...

@UlrikeFischer I saw that. Very brave :)

yo'
1:10 PM
Good Monday morning!

1:31 PM
@yo' morning... Yeah, morning. :)

yo'
@Skillmon with COVID and working in a highly distributed team, I'm loosing track of time sometimes :-)

1:47 PM
@yo' This can be fixed easily. Simply say "Quack" and @DavidCarlisle will tell you if it is lunch or dinner time :)

@DavidCarlisle here we go.

@PabloGonzálezL hi from F33 :)

@PauloCereda :) ... Actually this version is the most polished of all

@PabloGonzálezL Thank you!

@LaTeXereXeTaL I couldn't find the source file, but it's the updated version of mathmode

@PabloGonzálezL quite!

2:26 PM
@PauloCereda Jolly good show, old chap, whot? XD

@Plergux ooh ta ta
Ducks and sheep wearing top hats and monocles
:)

2:37 PM
@PauloCereda XD

@Plergux OH MY GOD
@Plergux This is amazing

3:32 PM
@PauloCereda :p

Ah a machine without emacs... today is a good day. :)
@DavidCarlisle ^^

@Skillmon -- Logic rules. Thank you.

@PauloCereda self contradictory sentence.

@DavidCarlisle :)

3:48 PM
@UlrikeFischer Input encodings :(

@JosephWright yay. I just saw that on biblatex there was a discussion about it too.

@UlrikeFischer Oh goody: could you point me to that?
@UlrikeFischer It can be handled at least if one doesn't allow the encoding to change: simply a question of adding a step for each character token to re-encode. That assumes UTF-8 output is acceptable, of course

@JosephWright you were in it, begin of october github.com/plk/biblatex/issues/1058. I only checked it now to see if someone has problems with the auto mode of biblatex.

@UlrikeFischer Oh, that one: I thought you meant something new
@UlrikeFischer Comes down in part to the question of how one expects people to handle new/updated documents

4:04 PM
@JosephWright well people are lazy and so keep old documents around (I can probably find some ansinew document somewhere too). But in my experience if forced by necessity they are quite willing to adapt them -- and the necessity is there, not only because of expl3, but as people have more and more mixed computer systems.

4:52 PM
@Plergux sheep person, have you ever thought of playing Animal Crossing? It seems the type of game you and your son would enjoy greatly.

@PauloCereda It sounds good but we don't have any Nintendos :|

@Plergux oh sorry...

@PauloCereda It's fine. We have three PC's and three Playstations XD

@Plergux ooh!
@Plergux Which PS version?

@PauloCereda 2, 3, & 4 :)

4:55 PM
@Plergux OMG
PlaySheepStation

@Plergux Watch @PauloCereda's talk from TUG2020 and you will immediately feel the overwhelming urge to buy one

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ^^ a sketch for the secret thingy ooh
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas awwww

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ^^ this was my best slide :)

@Plergux -- I assume that you are not neglecting opportunities for your son to learn outdoorsy skills. Things like setting up a proper "council fire". That does require a proper collections of sticks, and when I was first in Iceland (in the last century), the group I was with was informed that there are so few trees in Iceland because the sheep find all the little ones very tasty.

5:02 PM
@PauloCereda absolutely!

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas <3
@barbarabeeton ooh a sheep plot

@PauloCereda :D It sounds exactly like something I'd like :D Maybe when I finish PhD I will reward myself with a Nintendo :p

@PauloCereda -- Yes. A reason for fences. But Icelandic sheep are very good at hiding -- their colors match the surrounding landscape perfectly (except for the white ones; I've never seen them on snow).

@Plergux yaaaaaaaaaay
@barbarabeeton ooh that's true
@Plergux /cue Monty Python sketch on how to not be seen

@PauloCereda -- You have never seen snow! We'll have to figure out some way to remedy that.

5:07 PM
@barbarabeeton Oh, we do outdoors stuff. The thing about the sheep is only half the truth. Humans cut down most of the trees to begin with and what was left has a hard time growing among other things because of sheep. But I don't like to blame the sheep, rather the people that let their sheep go anywhere.

@barbarabeeton ooh I could go to Iceland, there might be snow in there. :)
The only white thingy around here is this bloke:

@Plergux -- "The tragedy of the commons". Look it up.

@barbarabeeton Pfft, as if Icelandic sheep care about fences XD I've seen them jump fences and bulldoze through fences.

Fubá says hi. :)

@Plergux -- People just have to learn to be more clever about how they construct their fences.

5:10 PM
@PauloCereda XD
@PauloCereda Right now, no snow. Only wind and rain :| (Icelandic rain is horizontal so don't bother with an umbrella :p)

user image

ooh 32-bit integer sheep count
2

@barbarabeeton Yeah, too bad Icelanders are misers :p

@Plergux ooh horizontal rain...WAIT WHAT

@PauloCereda LOL, XKCD?

@Plergux Yes :D

5:13 PM
@PauloCereda There is a chapter about XKCD in my thesis XD
2

@Plergux OOH
BEST THESIS EVER
@Plergux is there any reference to ducks or sheep too?

@PauloCereda 16? :-P

@Rmano Oh

@Plergux ooh

5:16 PM
@PauloCereda Hmmm... not that I remember. There might be some discussion about sheep colours but it can be easily remedied. :p

@Plergux :D
@Plergux I mentioned ducks in mine. :)

@Plergux do you know the xkcd colour package?

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas Yes, I used it in my thesis :)

@Plergux I see, a true TeXpert!

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas TeXnical sheep

5:19 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas XD Unfortunately, I also could have used a Munsell package which I couldn't find so I had to define around seventy Munsell code colours to use as well XD

@Plergux I'm flattered, now I need to read it!

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas XD
@Rmano Well, you're welcome to. Unfortunately, it's in Icelandic :|

@Plergux oops. A little obstacle, I see ;-P
Will wait until it's famous and translated to English.

@Rmano If one believes your avatar, you should be experienced in all things related to ice

5:22 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ooh
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas LOL
ooh a nut
/helps mr. squirrel

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas Well, I love snow (especially when snowing...)
I live in the wrong place, unfortunately

@Rmano A teensy weensy one :p I have plans to translate it myself. One of the symptoms of speaking a language that has around 340 thousand speakers total in the whole world is needing to speak at least one other language at a native level. :p

@Rmano tell me about it :)

Why do you think I did my sabbatical in COlorado? ;-)

@Rmano to watch South Park ooh teh snow

5:25 PM
@Rmano ... because you like gummi bears?

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ;-) don't know about gummi, but I never saw a bear in Colorado (although there was a sign that said something on the style "bears around, don't do the trail if less than four people", so I deduce that bears can count).

SOLD IT
na na na na na na na na Leðurblökumaðurinn!
This is awesome

@Rmano :) maybe that's just the number of people they manage to eat - if 4 or more people, the bear is full and at least some of them will survive?
@PauloCereda The delta thingy again!

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas Indeed! They are very good at partial derivatives, it seems. :)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas XD Yeah, the Icelandic name for Batman is a literal translation. Which would be fine, except the Icelandic name for "bat" is "leather-flapper" XD (and with Icelandic spelling "Gotham" would be "Goþam" XD

5:41 PM
@Plergux ooh

yo'
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas I enjoy the Thor's hammer more.

@Plergux well, Italian has a lot more speakers, but they're all in the same place (mostly overcrowded ;-) ), so I feel more or less the same...

@Rmano Yeah, it's been a while since "italian" was the lingua franca :p

@Plergux ...and then, it was not even "italian"...
But I had no problem in Iceland when I went there (while I was serving in the Italian Navy, circa 1989), everybody spoke better English than me.

@yo' There really ought to be a Thor's hammer latex package!

5:55 PM
@Rmano Well, in my opinion you learn a language much better if you hear it while you learn and I will never understand all the dubbing XD

@PauloCereda apparently this bloke claims there are alternatives? stackoverflow.blog/2020/11/09/modern-ide-vs-vim-emacs/?cb=1

yo'
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas \ProvidesPackage{thor}{2020/11/09}\def\thor{þ}\def\Thor{Þ}

An OT question (I mean, it's a LaTeX one) --- any hint/advice for a bibtex format parser library in python? the one I used seems really dead... (pybliographer thingy).

@DavidCarlisle ooh

6:02 PM
@Rmano -- When I was in Iceland in 1986, I went on a tour, and the tour guide spoke better English than I did. A sobering realization.

@yo' You could try the staves package with that :p

yo'
@Plergux oh yeah, that's this one

@Plergux sheep person, would you like to join a secret project? :)

@PauloCereda oooh?

@Plergux ooh it's very secret, you can ask @samcarter_preparing_for_xmas and @UlrikeFischer

6:09 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas @UlrikeFischer \does secret sheep maneuvers

@Plergux ooh stealth sheep :)

@Plergux please sent me a mail ...

6:20 PM
@barbarabeeton that's not surprising, given your nationality

@DavidCarlisle -- But the accent she had was very un-British. You would have had serious problems.

@barbarabeeton Ég er alvöru málfræðingur

@DavidCarlisle quack

@PauloCereda dinner (although actually we ate @Plergux)

@DavidCarlisle oh my
yay @Skillmon mr. rabbit is here!

6:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- Then you wouldn't even need an English-speaking guide.

@barbarabeeton when Pope Benedict XVI visited Brazil, he spoke a better Portuguese than our president at that time. :)

@PauloCereda and so is Mr. Duck!

@Skillmon <3

@PauloCereda oh, a carrot! /nibble

@DavidCarlisle Það er gott að vita. :)

6:38 PM
@Plergux oh, strange and unknown letters. And something about either some life or a gaming handheld produced by Sony...

@Skillmon sheep might endorse Sony. :)

Is there a possibility to get an automatic email notification if a question with a certain tag got posted. I know that overleaf had something like that watching for questions tagged {overleaf}, but I don't know whether they did it with an SO-internal mechanism, or with a dedicated script running on some server of theirs.

@PauloCereda It's okay. I have Tanngnjóstur and Tanngrisnir powers :p

@Plergux ooh

7:12 PM
@Skillmon That's a good question for meta :D

@PabloGonzálezL you're right... Will do :)

@Plergux I got the mail and answered.

@UlrikeFischer (^-^)b

@Skillmon Yes, you can make a filter stackexchange.com/filters and enable mail notifications for this filter

7:36 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas oh, thank you. Now I don't ask a meta question... :)

3 hours later…
10:11 PM
There are just so many little things I've missed over the years.
It's shameful really.

10:25 PM
@LaTeXereXeTaL ooh no.
@LaTeXereXeTaL and I doubt that it is shameful. At worst it's understandable. Except if you missed out on pineapple on pizza, that would be shameful. @CarLaTeX would be very sad if you never tried pineapple pizza.

Oh I love pineapple on pizza.
