I have two figures to be placed side by side
I used tabular{c c}
but I think thats for two rows and 2 columns
any way out?

2:20 AM
@BAYMAX -- Why no t pack them in side-by-side minipages?
\noindent
\begin{minipage}{.5\textwidth} ... \end{minipage}%
\begin{minipage}{.5\textwidth} ... \end{minipage}
Don't use figure; just \includegraphics

2:56 AM
right! thanks@barbarabeeton

4 hours later…
6:55 AM
@BAYMAX as specified it's for two columns, you can have as many rows as you use

1 hour later…
7:59 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh ok!

@BAYMAX but you probably want p columns not c as c are mbox so you would not be able to use \caption so it is probably easier to use two minipage as Barbara suggested. (If you don't need captions then you don't need anything at all, just use two \includegraphics)

How does one revert an edit on an answer? I don't think this edit has any relevance, especially since package names are case sensitiive, tex.stackexchange.com/posts/563066/revisions

@daleif can't you click on the "rollback"?

@daleif But the change is not about case it also changed pdfplots to pgfplots so I would leave it as is.
@daleif And generally unless the edit is literally wrong, rolling back edits is something to do quite cautiously.

@AlanMunn -- Have you figured out how to avoid sludge in Turkish/Arabic/Greek coffee? (Of course, that would remove the possibility of reading fortunes in the sludge.)

@barbarabeeton :) No, I think sludge is an integral part of those coffees.

@AlanMunn The typo is fine,but since this is a package name chaning the case is very wrong to me. Rolled back and fixed the typo my self.

1:40 PM
hi @daleif

@daleif Formatted as code, I agree (as it was here). But some packages do have names that can be used (PSTricks, ExPex are two that I can think of) but I agree they shouldn't be formatted as code in those formats. I don't know if pgfplots is one of those though.

@daleif are you responsible for mathtools?

@AlanMunn -- If I remember correctly, I've sometimes been served Arabic coffee with cinnamon. In that case, cinnamon sludge wouldn't be able to be distinguished from the coffee grounds sludge. I don't know why there's a complaint.

@barbarabeeton The complaint is cinnamon. :)

2:00 PM
@Anush depends on who you ask. I maintain it.

@AlanMunn serious statement: arroz doce is good with canela. :)

@PauloCereda -- I'll agree with you here ... but aletria is even nicer!

@JosephWright I was thinking more of scp * theotherplace:. which would work in either direction

@DavidCarlisle :)

2:48 PM
@Anush given you can show the issue just using sbox and no math at all, fixing it in mathtools would be the wrong place, I'm sure.
Since it involves colour and beamer we could blame @JosephWright

Q: Latex foreach in tabular environment

Oliver BorchertI'm trying to use the tikz package's foreach command in a tabular environment. I know that it is not really suited for doing this, but how would I be able to make the following command work (I think, it is obvious what it should do, and I know that there are some difficulties regarding the textbf...

@cis that doesn't work as you have the grouping wrong & is like }{ as far as grouping goes) but there must be thousands of answers on site showing table construction from loops
Even @PauloCereda managed to find one

@DavidCarlisle impressive isn't it

@barbarabeeton I love rice pudding, but not with cinnamon. I don't think I've ever had aletria. Cinnamon is ok in baked goods, and also in savoury dishes, but as a thing you sprinkle on anything, no thanks. :)

@DavidCarlisle ducks are good at finding

@AlanMunn not even on nutella pizza?

4:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle cinnamon is much too good for nutella pizza

@DavidCarlisle ooh Nutella pizza is good

@DavidCarlisle You can put anything you like on nuttella pizza. More presupposition failure. :)

cis
@DavidCarlisle @PauloCereda @samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz

Yes, yes, with etoolbox and makeatletter and .... and ...

I do believe that this will work like this one day.

If one could just put a foreach in a tabular, I would have done it 1000 times.
I know some tricks here (with pgfplotstable at the end).
But I wonder, whether there is a simple way.

@cis The etoolbox solution is pretty straightforward. No @ involved there.

@cis there are loops you can use directly but the pgfforeach is heavily based on grouping so can't start the loop in one group and finish in another. you seem to imply using a package is an unexpected inconvenience when you are already using one of the largest packages there are.
2

4:10 PM
@Anush well the problem is that while the blend/mixin can be set globally, it works only with direct color commands, not with the automatic reset done internally in various places. You could try the following, but quite probably you will then get some unexpected color in some other places.

cis
@DavidCarlisle My method would be to write a writeout and then read it in again with pgfplotstable.

This is possible, but may make cumbersome demands on the loop.

So I asked myself whether there was an elementary solution.

Note that the number of rows and columns is basically variable or depends on the loop.

\makeatletter
\patchcmd\reset@color{\beamerorig@reset@color}{\beamerorig@reset@color\color{.}}{}{\fail}
\makeatother

@AlanMunn -- Okay. Personal taste. But even in baked goods, cinnamon can be overwhelming. When I pass by a Cinnabon shop in an airport or turnpike-side mall, I'm nearly knocked out by the aroma. So moderation is desirable.

cis
@AlanMunn In this solution ( tex.stackexchange.com/a/367988/46023 ) it seems, I have to know the number of columns... I do not know them in the first.

4:14 PM
@barbarabeeton Yes, Cinnabon is pretty stomach turning.

4:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle wrong patch, (I had changed the code directly first, and now the patch is in the wrong place as there is another match) << @Anush
@Anush this here the better patch:
\makeatletter
\patchcmd\reset@color{\beamerorig@reset@color\pgfsys@color@unstacked}{\beamerorig@reset@color\color{.}\pgfsys@color@unstacked}{}{\fail}
\makeatother

4:45 PM
@UlrikeFischer With the code from tex.stackexchange.com/q/562768/36296 I get an error
\documentclass[xcolor={rgb}]{beamer}
\setbeamercovered{transparent}
\beamertemplatenavigationsymbolsempty
\setbeamersize{text margin left=10mm,text margin right=5mm}
\setbeamertemplate{frametitle}[default][center]
\usepackage{mathtools}
\usepackage{bm}
\newcommand{\var}[1]{\operatorname{var}{#1}}
\newcommand{\E}{\mathbb{E}}
\newcommand{\norm}[1]{\left\lVert#1\right\rVert}

\makeatletter
\patchcmd\reset@color{\beamerorig@reset@color\pgfsys@color@unstacked}{\beamerorig@reset@color\color{.}\pgfsys@color@unstacked}{}{\fail}

@AlanMunn Showing my partner the Wikibook section on linguistics to cheer them up while they go through the Google interview process
Do you have a recommendation on which Trees package to learn?

@Canageek First choice: forest, second choice forest, third choice forest. :)
@Canageek They might also like adamliter.org/content/LaTeX/latex-workshop-for-linguists.pdf Probably better than Wikibook (although admittedly I haven't checked it out.)

@AlanMunn ooh
@AlanMunn also, load the linguistic trees thingy

@AlanMunn My parnter is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, but thank you, I'll show them
@AlanMunn Huh, that isn't even on the wikibooks page

@Canageek Fixed. :)
@Canageek And as a quick and dirty list of packages: amunn.github.io/latex/latex-guide.pdf

4:53 PM
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz oh well, then I fear this simple solution won't work. the color command ends somewhere in the middle of the tabular and that is not good. Why does onslide tries to go over groups ;-( @DavidCarlisle

Is there any Star Wars fan around?

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz ooh

cis
@DavidCarlisle (https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/563092/46023)

Yes, I know: if one is ready to change the loop dramatically; then he can also use pgfplotstable or elementary LaTeX ...

I think the tabto solution is quite ok, even if one has to learn new commands again.

5:10 PM
@PauloCereda I have never seen a single Star Wars movie. :)

@AlanMunn you always watch them in pairs?
2

@DavidCarlisle lol

@AlanMunn It would actually make no difference because I wanted to comment something that's not in the movies. :)

@UlrikeFischer isn't the real fix not to use \pgfsys@color@unstacked and always use the color stack (via l3color perhaps) @JosephWright

@PauloCereda I um, taught myself to read in the summer after grade 2 so that I could read Star Wars novels. I went from the slow readers class to full adult novels by the start of grade 3 so that I could read more Star Wars. It was my Aspergers special obsession all through elementary school. I'm not as into it now, but still know a fair bit about it.

5:25 PM
@Canageek How nice! I am starting to read the novels as well. :)

@DavidCarlisle I'm not sure, the color setup is a bit of a mess, as everyone seem to patch everything. But imho the core problem is that it tries to add a global "blend" color, and this requires to reset the color after a group to have an effect:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xcolor}
\begin{document}
 \color{red} outside

 \begingroup
  \xglobal\blendcolors{!20!white}inside \color{blue} mixin
 \endgroup

  no mixing outside \color{.} now mixin outside
\end{document}

5:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle I still need to add colour stacking to all drawing ops: depends on changes in dvipdfmx for XeTeX

6:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle you could suggest \zzz as a very useful, but rather unknown command ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh @Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz and I will address this command soon. :)

6:26 PM
@MarcelKrüger I just saw in a log when fontspec.cfg was loaded the message "Calling deprecated Lua function charcat". Is that new?

@UlrikeFischer That sound like my Lua changes in expl3. I'll have to see what fontspec is trying to do.
@UlrikeFischer I can't find any use of charcat in fontspec... Do you have a minimal example?

@MarcelKrüger it is curious. I added an empty fontspec.cfg to the current folder, and then I get the message with the following example, but only if the empty optional argument is there:
\documentclass[11pt]{article}

\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Charis SIL}[]

\begin{document}

abc

\end{document}
@MarcelKrüger the message is only on the terminal, not in the log (if I didn't overlook it) -- I did overlook it ;-)

6:44 PM
@UlrikeFischer Do you have a .fontspec file for that font?

@MarcelKrüger the log doesn_t show one, and I see the message shows up for \setmainfont{Arial} too, but let me recreate the formats, perhaps I'm behind something.
@MarcelKrüger seems to gone, after I made the format.

7:03 PM
Does anyone else here use TeXStudio?
I'm having some issues on my desktop installation with the autocomplete menu that I don't have on my laptop
ie on my laptop it figures out \begin{itemize} after the i, then fills in the end and first \item for me, but on my desktop it seems to think itemize doesn't exist
Not sure what setting I'd have munged up to do that

1 hour later…
8:09 PM
so what's this about topanswers.xyz?

8:34 PM
Ug, latex uses / and { way to much for both being on your pinky finger.
Mine is sore already, dammit. Everything I'm typing is \item and \begin{itemize} over and over

yo'
@AlanMunn I saw one (I think); I don't really remember it

and hitting enter so often doesn't help

@thymaro go to topanswers.xyz and scroll down, it's described there.

yo'
and just today, I placed Replicators into SW instead of SG.

@Canageek \catcode`(=1 \catcode`)=2 should solve that issue (and create a hundred others :-)

8:39 PM
@Canageek There are editors that do not require this finger so much: tex.stackexchange.com/a/21026/124577 ;)

@Canageek don't you have your editor set up to enter such things without typing \ or { ?

8:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle No?
@TeXnician Guess it is time to install emacs again

@Canageek are there computers without emacs installed?

I mean, all this is going to do is move that stress to my left wrist
@DavidCarlisle This one it seems, I thought I had it installed, but havent' used it in a while
I mostly use TeXStudio as emacs needs to learn what font rendering is
Someone who understands what a GUI is needs to write a wrapper for emacs with a font rendering engine that wasn't written before I was born
That has things like proper kerning and subpixel rendering

@Canageek I'd assume any editor with tex in its name made entering something like an itemize environment trivial with one or two keystrokes?

@DavidCarlisle TeXStudio SHOULD have that, but it isn't for some reason. The list that should have it is empty
and even then the part you have to type before hitting tab is \begin{i
Which still have 1 \ and one {, though that is about 25% of the normal amount
I don't know of one that makes \item easier to type

@Canageek I'd find typing tex with proportional fonts massively distracting. don't you use a monospace font for code editing? what kerning do you expect in an editor?
@Canageek I'd type control-e <return> and it would insert `\begin{itemize} \item \end{itemize} then type the first item text then type alt-return and it will enter a newline and \item and so on until the list finished, so not type \ or { at all.

8:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle When I'm writing text with light markup I prefer proportional, yeah. I'm writing 90% text with a few extra commands here and there. Chemist, not mathamatition or programmer. I'll have entire paragraphs without any TeX in them
@DavidCarlisle Right, time to get emacs configured, even if it is useless for editing, needs a modern spellcheck, etc.
I treat emacs as an entry-only editor. Great for making tables and entering text, but actually reading paragraphs of text on it is like stabbing myself in the eyes, and it doesn't' have a use friendly underline with red line spellcheck like every other decent editor.

@Canageek I'm trying to think if I have ever typed a tex document in a proportional font in the 30+ years I've used tex. I can't think of any occasion. I suppose I could try, perhaps, sounds wrong though:-)

If you are writing English it makes it much nicer
See how much harder the same text is to read in emacs
@DavidCarlisle Emacs can't render text right even using the same font though, this is with both emacs and notepad++ using the same font, set to the same size (ProFontWin as I recall) flickr.com/photos/canageek/8012435163
If you can tell me how to make emacs not buttugly, I'd LOVE to hear it

9:14 PM
@Canageek my documents are more likely in xml than tex syntax but emacs can use proportional system fonts if you wish, it just seems weird:

@DavidCarlisle Yeah, it does a bad job rendering them though. Compare windows system rendering vs emacs rendering of the same C++ code in the same font
(Flickr link above)
@DavidCarlisle Part of it is (that wont' show up in a screenshot) that emacs doesn't now what subpixel rending is. It also seems to cram everything together really tightly.

@Canageek I suspect your font usage emacs is suboptimal (hard to tell from an image) is that the native windows emacs? I'm using X and as far as I can tell it's using the same X font rendering as any other application

@DavidCarlisle From what i can tell it looks identical to when I use emacs on *nix?
@DavidCarlisle I got to the point I'd rather use emacs -nw to edit things then the GUI one as the font rending in xterm was so much cleaner

@Canageek but as I say I only ever use monospace fonts:-)

@DavidCarlisle Even with monospace it is bad. No hinting, really tight lines to one another, and something about how it renders each character is diffrent

9:21 PM
@Canageek can't say it has ever bothered me, but what I do know is when I want to apply regular expression edits over a couple of thousand files at a time, emacs always gives me the tools to do what I need:-)

@DavidCarlisle I just use sed for that....

@Canageek sometimes I do to but I can do query-replace over the files or just apply the regex within math skipping over surrounding text or ... also when editing xml it does real time validation and completion so it's really hard to enter an incorrect element, and also it has M-x doctor for when things go bad

@DavidCarlisle Oh, I like emacs, I just wish it wasn't stuck in 1974
Also hitting control on mye keyboard is...not as nice as I'd like it to be.

@Canageek I started using it in 1987, It has acquired a menu thing since then (but I never use that:-)

(I use an ergonomic keyboard, which as the downside of control being further away....)

9:27 PM
@Canageek it could be worse, it could be vim

3 hours ago, by Canageek
ie on my laptop it figures out \begin{itemize} after the i, then fills in the end and first \item for me, but on my desktop it seems to think itemize doesn't exist
@Canageek You could try to compare the "completion" tab of texstudio preferences. Maybe the selection of packages is different or the "preferred command set" is set differently

9:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle How to I tell emacs to stop effing with my tabs and bit a good dumb input terminal?

10:29 PM
@Canageek set tab-always-indent to nil probably does enough or if you really want tab to be a normal key bind tab to (self-insert-command tab)

1 hour later…
11:44 PM
Hi
While using align for multiple equations (they are numbered), how to label each of them? should I write \label{} below each equation?
@DavidCarlisle nice one! I see

@BAYMAX anywhere in the equation

I want to refer them separately actually
all have equation numbers
