It just needs an internet facing linux machine, so either someone hosts it or if we stay with aws ec2 I think ~ $100 a year for the t2.micro I'm using but that's a bit under powered and critically short of disk space so upping the specs a bit $500-$800 range per year There are gazillians of options and everything is priced by the hour so it's not entirely trivial to see the cost but that kind of range.

@AlanMunn -- I'm still confused when the task is to refer to one of two unnamed people, one apparently male and the other apparently female. If the (third) person being communicated with is not present, pointing won't work. How else (other than using "him" or "her") can one specify one or the other? "Them" or "their" strongly implies both. (Even if these persons' names are known, the description gets convoluted.)

@barbarabeeton There are definitely some contexts in which it can get confusing, don't think they're substantially different from cases where we are using gendered pronouns with multiple possible referents. So we develop ways to disambiguate that are independent of the pronoun.

@cis There really isn't anything else I can tell you about that. I am no fontforge expert, but according to all fontforge documentation I've seen, fontforge will only export one layer into a font. This isn't much of a surprise because both CFF (Type1) and TrueType do not support separate layers.

The closest you get is the COLR stuff. It's intended to provide different layers with different colors, but you could add color patterns which make all except for one layer invisible if you want to print individual layers. They still don't work using fontforge layers though, they work using separate glyphs representing different layers and the renderer is responsible for printing them on top of each other.

If you want to generate a COLR font based on fontforge layers, you might want to look at github.com/fontforge/fontforge/issues/4361. The title is about something different, but they talk about exactly that.

I've just seen that they generate SVG and not COLR fonts, but it should be possible to adapt the script to save the layers as separate glyphs and then build a separate script to create a COLR table.

@cis If you send me a fontforge font file which (1) uses layers and (2) has a license which allows modification, I can try some experiments.

@StefanKottwitz -- I've sometimes made suggestions (in comments, provided the posting is recent enough). If the oversight is rectified, I'll generally remove the comment, but some posters resist this sort of suggestion. It can be discouraging.

@cis Most of your example fonts do not actually contain layers. In any case, sending around a layered font with TrueType layers as ttf file is a bit odd because that format does not support the such layers. The sfd file would be much more useful. Anyway, see github.com/zauguin/COLR for some scripts to generate a color font based on fontforge layers. (Requires the fontforge python module, texlua and a (more or less POSIX compliant) shell)

Hello to everybody! Is there a string which definitely cannot be part of the name of one of the "destinations"/anchors that get placed into the .pdf-file by means the hyperref-package?

(In some situations I would like to use this as default-value with the refcount-package's \getrefbykeydefault{LABEL}{anchor}{Default-value in case the referencing-label LABEL doesn't exist} in order to ensure to get something that does definitely not accidentally denote an existing destination/anchor in case the referencing-label in question doesn't exist (yet).)

@UlrikeFischer Thank you for the warning. :-) The default will not be passed to a hyperref-command. :-) The results of \getrefbykeydefault are to be written to an external text-file which will not be processed by TeX at all but by an application where I need some default-string for triggering suppressing creation of links in case the destination doesn't/cannot exist within the linked .pdf-file.

@cis (I will assume that you use Linux or macOS becuase I don't know how to do anything serious in Windows) Open a terminal, switch to the directory which contains the files from the github repository and execute sh script.sh Untitled1.sfd Untitled1.sfd.palettes.

This executes the script script.sh which automatically calls the three other scripts with the right parameters.

If you want to use a different font, uses that fontname instead of Untitled1.sfd and adapt the .palettes file to your needs. It basically contains a list of mapping from layer names to HTML color names.

@AlanMunn Good choice! It's somehow strange entertainment I guess if one simply browses it, though there should be good channels for fast information. (The big hack today is an issue though)

@StefanKottwitz If replying to my name troubles you, the first 3 or 4 letters should be enough to ping me (and fyi the purpose of the name is not spam, but primarily as information to the users of tex.se to make sure they are not surprised if they don't get replies to their comments)

@StefanKottwitz -- Thinking of "small fires" reminds me of (totally different frame of reference) the very recent photos of the sun's surface. There are small eruptions not earlier detected, and the term applied to them is "campfires".

@barbarabeeton Thanks, interesting! I looked it up on CNN. I wonder about the "small" campfires, if they may have the size of the Earth :-o did not see it there.

I'm not very surprised that on a huge fireball with huges flares there are small and very small flares too, if you look closer and closer. I like fractals since I was a kid, and it reminds me of that.

@StefanKottwitz -- Well, they're small relative to the size of the enormous jets that one often sees shooting out of the corona when watching a total eclipse.
