@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz you have solved the issue. Many thanks!!
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz what items do you mean? The ones that are inside columns and column?

@manooooh it's just a local array declared github.com/davidcarlisle/latexcgi/blob/master/perl/latexcgi#L8
@manooooh actually that file isn't used, I should delete it the javascript is not at latexcgi.xyz it is at learnlatex, so: github.com/learnlatex/learnlatex.github.io/blob/master/scripts/…
@manooooh I prefer it that way:-) it saves worrying about whether && short circuits and it potentially allows different error messages depending on which fails, although currently that isn't the case

@DavidCarlisle ohh nice! I don't know that syntax, my is a function probably defined as an array in other file
@DavidCarlisle oh, is that complicated?
@DavidCarlisle that is awesome. I thought it had something to do with lazy vs. eager evaluation

@manooooh ? my is just a perl variable declaration, like var in javascript, it's an array because of the @
@manooooh ?
@manooooh well in a way yes it does, testing zz && zz[foo] only works if you know the second argument isn't evaluated if the first is false which is different in different languages

12:27 AM
@DavidCarlisle nice to know! It is weird to me because of the parentheses, I thought it was an invocation to a function called my with 5 arguments. The names in uppercase is a notation? How do you know the type of each variable? Can you modify just only one variable but not the other?
@DavidCarlisle I mean if deleting that file will cause a big problem

Q: fontspec, Fontforge: How to set a layer of a character in a document

cisI create a font myfont.ttf in FontForge. In that I built a new layer, which gets the name 'Back 3' (don't know why), and set in the layers Fore - Back - Back 3 a rectangle, a circle and a star (BTW: I do not know, whether this is the right way). When I call up the chacter in my document, see MWE...

6 hours later…
7:02 AM
@cis well, I have no idea at all about Japanese fonts. For the parser I just used the first kana font I found that works under pdfLaTeX.

7:39 AM
@manooooh it's not used at all or even on the server, it's just dead code in the git repo

8:26 AM
@manooooh With such complicate nesting of things, I would probably do all overlay specifications manually instead of using automatic uncovering. If you don't want to hard code the numbers, you could use relative overlays, so adding things in between is still easy to do.

@DavidCarlisle I'm starting to think about TUG2020 slides: is there anything specific I should include for the backend stuff you've worked on?

@JosephWright not really, probably worth mentioning focus on getting an up to date and inclusive tex system, notably lualatex and platex support (latexonline.cc updated texlive latex-on-http specifically added platex, although in the end we didn't use them) also pdf.js for mobile browsers.
@JosephWright unless you want to mention it gets turned off in 11 months unless funded.

@DavidCarlisle OK, I think I have that in mind already, but good to have a note
@DavidCarlisle I'll mention that too!

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz spreading on the mirrors: [2/7, 00:04/00:08] update: circuitikz [1210k] (55777 -> 55843) ... done. Thanks again for the report!

8:38 AM
@PauloCereda A DUCK

@JosephWright ooh

@UlrikeFischer, @DavidCarlisle Looks like we have a bitset plan :)

@DavidCarlisle how much founding is needed?

8:59 AM
@Rmano no problem, after all I'm directly profiting from its development... :)

9:13 AM
The new trend "miktex can't write a pdf -- > Do you have Avast?"

10:03 AM
@UlrikeFischer You happy if I merge the color-export and color-multi-model branches?

@JosephWright into color-models or into master?

@UlrikeFischer Into master: I think those ideas should be working now
@UlrikeFischer I'm also thinking about the cctab one, as Bruno and @PhelypeOleinik seem happy there

@JosephWright it is fine with me -- less branches makes it easier to test stuff ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Cool
cctabs are coming

10:20 AM
@JosephWright duck mail

@PauloCereda A test for my graphics tablet :)

@JosephWright you are naughty

@PauloCereda It's for work!

@JosephWright "work" :)

@PauloCereda Seriously!

10:33 AM
@JosephWright <3
@JosephWright UK has some interesting MP's, I see...

@PauloCereda Indeed

@JosephWright some of their statements are bonkers :)

10:49 AM
@manooooh about tex.stackexchange.com/questions/553743/… : you can fix this by setting the leftmargin

/me wondering if this is bug ...

@UlrikeFischer well that depends. It just needs an internet facing linux machine, so either someone hosts it or if we stay with aws ec2 I think ~ $100 a year for the t2.micro I'm using but that's a bit under powered and critically short of disk space so upping the specs a bit $500-$800 range per year There are gazillians of options and everything is priced by the hour so it's not entirely trivial to see the cost but that kind of range.
@JosephWright ^

11:05 AM
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright You can get your own virtual machine on my server that's already funded by DANTE (confirmed until May 2021), so it makes more use of the already existing funding.

@StefanKottwitz I'll let you and @DavidCarlisle work out the details :)

@StefanKottwitz there is no rush (as aws is free for a year) but we should talk at some point) of course we currently have no idea of server load: it runs at < 10 users per day currently but if the tutorial becomes popular it could increase ...

@DavidCarlisle The server #3 can still take some load:

@StefanKottwitz Oooh

@StefanKottwitz bigger than my free aws trial machine:-) vvvv
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo |egrep "name|cores" | sort|uniq
cpu cores       : 1
model name      : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2676 v3 @ 2.40GHz

11:20 AM
memory is more important anyway

@DavidCarlisle, @StefanKottwitz Lets see what happens now Jonas has started work

@JosephWright there's 11 months time but now there's a backup plan ;-)

@StefanKottwitz Excellent

@StefanKottwitz sounds good, thanks

11:50 AM
@StefanKottwitz I need free -h because I cannot read :)

12:01 PM

@StefanKottwitz :-O

164G RAM available ... I should move some stuff to that server and terminate the oldest server.
Got that server in a reverse auction.
The AWS t2.micro has 1G RAM. Could be exhausted when many processes are running.

@StefanKottwitz Wow, you got everything cached ;-) that must be fast.

@Rmano Just 3 VMs running there.
The virtual machines simply don't take the RAM that's assigned because they don't need:

@StefanKottwitz thanks :)

12:09 PM
damn now I admitted that I still use the root user ;-)
time to change that

@StefanKottwitz yes:)
@StefanKottwitz my plan was just to experiment with aws and see how it worked but just take whatever is free on the assumption that something would show up in terms of a more suitable server by the time the site needed it:-)

@DavidCarlisle it's good to try it!
the next person then registers the next free 1 year and the server moves ;-)

@StefanKottwitz well that had occurred to me but I think that's explicitly against the eula:_)

12:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle you read EULAs?

@StefanKottwitz it seems to work quite nicely but you have to watch their documentation, even during the "free trial" more or less anything they document or any button they ask you to click on will cost you something:-)
@StefanKottwitz sometimes. But anyway if the site is popular enough to last more than a year the free t2.micro really isn't big enough to cope anyway so the free trial is really only usable as a trial

@DavidCarlisle It's perfect for developing, testing and the start

@StefanKottwitz Quite

@StefanKottwitz yes and (in my case) for finding out how a commercial provider works irrespective of its use for the latex server

12:39 PM
@Rmano is there an option to draw the ieee not-circle on flip-flops without using ieee logic ports (similar to how one can use them on European logic ports with tripoles/european not symbol=ieee circle)?

@JosephWright Are you done with the merges?

@PhelypeOleinik Ye
@PhelypeOleinik Yes, back on color

@JosephWright Okay, I'll sort out the msg stuff and \seq_set_map:NN

@PhelypeOleinik Excellent

@JosephWright Regarding this one, I'll rename \seq_set_map:NNn to \seq_set_map_x:NNn and add a different \seq_set_map:NNn. Which do I add a “updated” entry and which do I add “added” in the docs?
@JosephWright I think \seq_set_map:NNn is updated, but I'm not sure

12:46 PM
@PhelypeOleinik added for \seq_set_map_x:NNn, updated for \seq_set_map:NNn: please move to stable too

@JosephWright Got it. Thanks!
@JosephWright Christmas gift for Joseph: an empty l3candidates :-)

@PhelypeOleinik :)
@PhelypeOleinik Will take a while: \tl_build:Nn in particular is hard

@JosephWright Why so?

@PhelypeOleinik We need better names: FMi not happy with the current ones

@JosephWright Ah, names...

1:10 PM
@JosephWright would you review my talk script? :)

@PauloCereda Sure

@JosephWright thanks, it will take a while, I am still writing... Slide 6 of... \totalslides. :)

1:24 PM
Guys, what do I use to avoid his/her thingy?
Their?
Like fulfillment of the human being in their relationship?

@PauloCereda Talk about ducks and refer to it ;)

@TeXnician ooh clever
@TeXnician it will be... interesting to hear about ducks in church, though... :)

1:51 PM
@JosephWright 3 pages and counting

@PauloCereda but you need to make it all plural in that case "beings" and "relationships"

@DavidCarlisle oh
@DavidCarlisle will people be mad at me for using "his"?

@DavidCarlisle Hang on to that grammar :). @PauloCereda, what's your full sentence?

@DavidPurton ooh spoilers, hold on
Hence, both contribute to the complete fulfillment of the human being in his relationship with God.
And yes, it's a TUG talk. :)

@PauloCereda I was going to suggest that one possibility is to use the masculine form throughout and prefix it by saying you are sticking to 19th century proper english without any care of 20th or 21st century sensibilities. that is bound to go down well.

1:57 PM
You could do Hence, both contribute to the complete fulfilment of a person's relationship with God.

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@DavidCarlisle ^^ koalas are good with English
@DavidPurton ooh that's good, thank you!

@PauloCereda you could write it in German and just randomly permute the gender as no one understands that anyway.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda some Davids are more helpful than others.

@DavidCarlisle KJV

2:00 PM
@JosephWright quite so

@JosephWright ooh king James
@DavidCarlisle LOL

In modern gender neutral Bible translations their is pretty common. I slightly dislike it, but English now has no you singlular and you plural distinction which is much worse
In Australia we have youse

@DavidPurton Well, it does, but no-one uses it :)

@JosephWright Karlisle J. daVid?
@DavidPurton ooh aussies

@JosephWright That's what I mean by now

2:01 PM
@DavidPurton I wish people would adopt Futurama's pronoun shkle . :)

@PauloCereda “human being” is a masculine noun (at least in portuguese it is), so it should be fine to use “his”, I think, if “shkle” is not an option

@PhelypeOleinik I don't think it works that way in English:-)

@DavidCarlisle Haha. I wish it did though. I like the precision of other languages with all their matching genders, numbers, and cases.

@PauloCereda Use 'their' like normal people. (Late to the party, but still.)

@DavidCarlisle shkle then :-)

2:15 PM
@PhelypeOleinik exactly, Portuguese is so easy. :)
@AlanMunn oh

@PauloCereda But seriously, use it.

@PauloCereda por ?qu(e|ê)\?

@AlanMunn The sentence sounds weird to me as @PauloCereda has it at the moment though. Something still needs to be reworded (even if their is common everywhere.)

@AlanMunn but I need to change the noun accordingly too, right?

@DavidPurton Yes but I think it's the 'human being' part that causing a problem. I like your version though which avoids the pronoun anyway.
@PauloCereda Yes, I like @DavidPurton 's rewrite.

2:20 PM
@DavidPurton @AlanMunn thanks, fixed

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz No(t yet). ;-) will look at it.

@Rmano already implemented a crude hack :)
@Rmano it's rather easy to implement:
\ctikzset{
  flipflop/not symbol/.choice
  ,flipflop/not symbol/ieee circle/.code=\pgf@circuit@flipflop@ieeelogicporttrue
  ,flipflop/not symbol/circle/.code=\pgf@circuit@flipflop@ieeelogicportfalse
}
\newif\ifpgf@circuit@flipflop@ieeelogicport
@Rmano and after ^^^^ use \ifpgf@circuit@flipflop@ieeelogicport instead of \ifpgf@circuit@ieeelogicport inside of the base shape for flipflop.
@Rmano (of course my crude hack does things a little bit differently, because it's a crude hack and I didn't want to patch that new conditional into the flipflop as well)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Thanks --- yes, in this case it should be easy because we have no anchors problems to shift around, as in the case of the european ports...
Or well, we can have but they are documented ;-)

2:37 PM
@DavidPurton I just tumbled in a text over "das Mädchen, das seinen Freund ..." which is grammatically correct but sounds odd to me nowadays.

@UlrikeFischer sorry, no German :). My knowledge of languages like this is only from Biblical Greek and Hebrew

@UlrikeFischer Really? I still write sentences like this :D

@DavidPurton ooh

@DavidPurton das Mädchen is "the girl", and "seinen Freund" is "his friend". So the sentence was saying something like "the girl who met his friend". Grammatically it is okay, as "das Mädchen" has a (grammatical) gender that goes with his, but ...

@DavidPurton I bought myself an edition of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Then I opened the book to realise I need to open the other side because everything is in the other side although I am an idiot and could not read LTR or RTL anyways. :)

2:45 PM
@UlrikeFischer I refer you to my starred comment above.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

Ooh, yes. I understand. My Greek teacher said it's often better to think of the genders as random labels
@PauloCereda my Hebrew is terrible. It was hard enough while I was learning, but now…

@DavidPurton mine does not exist :)

I do 15 minutes a week with my co-worker. We get two verses done :(
Anyway. Bedtime. Night

@DavidPurton Good night, mr. koala!

cis
3:00 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz There are some differences at some signs too.
See here:

@AlanMunn -- I'm still confused when the task is to refer to one of two unnamed people, one apparently male and the other apparently female. If the (third) person being communicated with is not present, pointing won't work. How else (other than using "him" or "her") can one specify one or the other? "Them" or "their" strongly implies both. (Even if these persons' names are known, the description gets convoluted.)

@barbarabeeton There are definitely some contexts in which it can get confusing, don't think they're substantially different from cases where we are using gendered pronouns with multiple possible referents. So we develop ways to disambiguate that are independent of the pronoun.

@AlanMunn no hablo su idioma also works. :)

@MarcelKrüger
So there is no way to work with different layers?

I was wondering if I can put these annotations on different layers and then call with
`\symbol[layer=3] {...}` ?

The advantage would be that I could save it under the original number,
here: U+3042 (12354).
With other words: \symbol[layer=2]{12354} should give only the "arrow 2".
....
---
---

Hint for confused people: There is no Argument "\symbol[layer=...]" yet.

@cis There really isn't anything else I can tell you about that. I am no fontforge expert, but according to all fontforge documentation I've seen, fontforge will only export one layer into a font. This isn't much of a surprise because both CFF (Type1) and TrueType do not support separate layers.
The closest you get is the COLR stuff. It's intended to provide different layers with different colors, but you could add color patterns which make all except for one layer invisible if you want to print individual layers. They still don't work using fontforge layers though, they work using separate glyphs representing different layers and the renderer is responsible for printing them on top of each other.
If you want to generate a COLR font based on fontforge layers, you might want to look at github.com/fontforge/fontforge/issues/4361. The title is about something different, but they talk about exactly that.
I've just seen that they generate SVG and not COLR fonts, but it should be possible to adapt the script to save the layers as separate glyphs and then build a separate script to create a COLR table.
@cis If you send me a fontforge font file which (1) uses layers and (2) has a license which allows modification, I can try some experiments.

Hi all!
I'm writing from the summer camp, so sorry for being absent for a couple of days...

@barbarabeeton two children already have stitches, about a quarter of the camp got cold or alike, so everything within limits :)
And also our shopper/driver and our medic are out, so I'm much more busy than I intended.

@yo' -- I'm not really talking about falling onto a rough surface, or misusing a sharp object and having to get stitched back up. (We've all done that.) But I once came back from camp with pneumonia (undiagnosed there), and the current crop of germs is much more dangerous, so stay masked (at least). And be aware. And (along with all that) have a good time.

5:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle first language patch gone ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ?

@DavidCarlisle remove patch for french. No longer needed

@DavidCarlisle Daniel wrote to me that the code in hyperref is no longer needed since 2007 ... (I wrote to all language maintainer in the afternoon).

@JosephWright ah hyperref (on zoom mathml conf call not following tex things:-)

@DavidCarlisle Lucky you

5:40 PM
@JosephWright could be worse, chemistry for example

@DavidCarlisle Hah!!!

@DavidCarlisle LOL
@JosephWright 6 pages and counting

@UlrikeFischer CIE-Lab setup almost sorted, although at present I'm not sure of good testing for this (or other Separations init stuff)

@JosephWright I can look. Also I have sorted the pdfresource stuff. So basically you can now test (but with new latex-dev/lthooks branch only) (it is all in the splitting branch currently)

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz @Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Is it accepted behavior on topanswers.xyz to offend other people? Specifically, I mean discrediting somebody by putting their profession in scare-quotes. Not sure if there are moderators, so I thought I ask the promoters. english.stackexchange.com/questions/225523/…
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz @Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Or will something be done for remedy?

@StefanKottwitz well I don't think it is nice. but I also think that one shouldn't spread this around in screenshots.

@UlrikeFischer It's on the main page. Not sure how to cite it. Once it's fixed, I happily delete the screenshot.

@StefanKottwitz I think there isn't so much trafic there that a direct cite is needed.

@UlrikeFischer Well, it's an allegation on topanswers.xyz against at least 4 people on TeX.SE. Who may not see it there, so I share it here.
Not talking about it doesn't fix it.

@StefanKottwitz I didn't say you shouldn't talk about it, but that there is no need to show the screenshot.

6:47 PM
@UlrikeFischer I won't require people to actually visit another site to see what they are being talked about. But yes, seeing it doesn't feel good for me too, so I understand your opinion. My indignation caused my to show it, sorry for that.

@StefanKottwitz and just to be not misunderstood: I'm in the boat too. I have a few screenshots which address me.

@UlrikeFischer Perhaps their users here talk with the mods (?) there to cure such things.

cis
@UlrikeFischer Could you please make such a "color font example" (?) where each "annotation arrow" has it own color or layer or ... (??? I don't know and I don't understand). :()

-----------> https://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/54964449#54964449

@UlrikeFischer I don't like to go there to complain, I tried a talk once in their chatroom on SE and that was not a good experience. But it's on topic here, as it's permanently promoted in chat user names.
@UlrikeFischer Ok, I removed the screenshot. A copy of the offense doesn't make it better, I think as well. The asked users will know anyway what I talked about.

7:32 PM
@cis no, I don't have fontforge and actually don't know much about how to create them. Better stick to Marcel ...

@StefanKottwitz and @UlrikeFischer -- The offense precipitating the comment is unfortunately rather frequently seen from some posters, fortunately not too many. I try to stay out of it, but am very much aware of many instances, and have sympathy for those affected by such offenses. (I'm happy to "steal" good ideas, but do try to give credit where it's due.)

@barbarabeeton Yes, unfortunately. Sometimes it's clear, sometimes it's claimed to get credits for earlier using some basic common tools or known ideas, there's some range. It's good to add a link in a comment when one notices a missing link, or maybe better to edit a post (or suggest an edit).

@StefanKottwitz -- I've sometimes made suggestions (in comments, provided the posting is recent enough). If the oversight is rectified, I'll generally remove the comment, but some posters resist this sort of suggestion. It can be discouraging.

@JosephWright l3regex crash tutorial ^^
Friends, I am preparing one of my talks for TUG2020. 30 minutes and I still haven't mentioned ducks or silly things. WOW

7:55 PM
@barbarabeeton It's worth trying to educate people! In the post precipitating the comment, the answerer improved and added two reference links for crediting (in a comment and in their answer). Though one seemed to misled them and demanded credit for marmot when it came von Kjell originally. (not sure if you can see the deleted comments) Just to say, it's not easy sometimes.

@StefanKottwitz -- Thanks for explication. As far as I know, I can't see deleted comments (at the moment, I can't even see a lot of "live" comments, but when my new laptop is fully activated, that should be remedied). Yes, education is the best policy. I'll keep trying.

8:14 PM
@cis Most of your example fonts do not actually contain layers. In any case, sending around a layered font with TrueType layers as ttf file is a bit odd because that format does not support the such layers. The sfd file would be much more useful. Anyway, see github.com/zauguin/COLR for some scripts to generate a color font based on fontforge layers. (Requires the fontforge python module, texlua and a (more or less POSIX compliant) shell)

8:26 PM
@StefanKottwitz I agree that there shouldn't be any discussion about specific users of SX on TA. The moderation on TA does rely on people flagging content, afaik, which makes it double-unfair to discuss where the respective users can't see it (this morning I was writing a comment about this there, but somehow it got lost between writing, my offline life and sending...). What I wonder now is, did you just see this by chance and if so, why bother writing here [...]

Hello to everybody! Is there a string which definitely cannot be part of the name of one of the "destinations"/anchors that get placed into the .pdf-file by means the hyperref-package?
(In some situations I would like to use this as default-value with the refcount-package's \getrefbykeydefault{LABEL}{anchor}{Default-value in case the referencing-label LABEL doesn't exist} in order to ensure to get something that does definitely not accidentally denote an existing destination/anchor in case the referencing-label in question doesn't exist (yet).)

@StefanKottwitz [...] (really curious, it has the bitter taste of a non-contributor trying to enforce his views on others, not that I don't share your point of it being bad behaviour)

@UlrichDiez not quite sure if understand your question ;-). Users can add their own destination, so basically any name can appear in a pdf.

8:42 PM
@UlrikeFischer I just realized that actually the question is more about pdf-standard than about TeX: I'd like to know if there is a string which cannot appear as the name of a destination in a pdf and which therefore can be added neither by a user nor by the hyperref-package's mechanisms for placing destinations automatically. I think I should better have asked this question in a forum for discussing pdf-standards... Sorry.

@UlrichDiez well if you add a ( it can't appear like this in the pdf. () are reserved.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'm a reader there since I read everything TeX related I can, in case there's something interesting or new

@UlrikeFischer Thank you very much.

@UlrichDiez but I'm not sure if it solves your problem. How are you using the default? If you pass it to some hyperref command it will probably escape the ( and then you have valid destination name again.

8:59 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz anyway it affects users here, and we have the occasion to talk here, and several people post that site address here X times a day using their name, so I felt free to express my opinion here
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz fix it or keep it, it's up to your users to set the tone on your site, I just could not stay quiet and here we are and I made my point. Thanks for letting me know your opinion, I appreciate knowing you as nice and considerate person.

9:16 PM
@UlrikeFischer Thank you for the warning. :-) The default will not be passed to a hyperref-command. :-) The results of \getrefbykeydefault are to be written to an external text-file which will not be processed by TeX at all but by an application where I need some default-string for triggering suppressing creation of links in case the destination doesn't/cannot exist within the linked .pdf-file.

I had left the sign like this first because I didn't know I had to do there.
Of course I can also copy the sign for other layers and then delete parts.

On the other hand, I could use the example Untitled1.sfd
https://github.com/zauguin/COLR
for understanding.

Here, however, it is not clear to me, how to save that now as
Untitled1.sfd.colr.ttf
what the LaTeX document from the link requires.

@cis (I will assume that you use Linux or macOS becuase I don't know how to do anything serious in Windows) Open a terminal, switch to the directory which contains the files from the github repository and execute sh script.sh Untitled1.sfd Untitled1.sfd.palettes.
This executes the script script.sh which automatically calls the three other scripts with the right parameters.
If you want to use a different font, uses that fontname instead of Untitled1.sfd and adapt the .palettes file to your needs. It basically contains a list of mapping from layer names to HTML color names.

@MarcelKrüger Ok, so I know what I have to do. Gimme some time. ;)

@StefanKottwitz There is one thing I don't understand: why is a stackexchange user then allowed to tell lies about "a female user of tex.se that was suspended for a year" in chatrooms on the stackexchange network and flags get declined by moderators because "the chat message does not identify a user in any way"? There are probably hundreds or thousands mathematicians on tex.se...

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz Ist that called "Whataboutism" in English? (Wikipedia-Link) Not sure what that user or that "female user of tex.se that was suspended for a year" are related to offending a mathematician.
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz And if you really think that wasn't publicly targeted at a single specific mathematician who some people know he's meant, gladly confirm.
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz I understand that you would like to talk it down, message received.

10:34 PM
@StefanKottwitz I don't want to talk this down, on the contrary. What I would like to see is the same standard you suggest other sites for their moderation, to also be applied to stackexchange.

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz Common sense, politeness, sense of tact, I assume. I hope that's most of the times achievable, even though it can be hard within escalated quarrels of users when moderators are drawn into it.

@StefanKottwitz I don't have a dog in this fight, really, but as someone who is probably somewhat more "in the know" than many visitors to that site, I have no idea who is being talked about there. This seems to be pure in-group chat. But I agree with @samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz that it's not clear your motivation for raising it here.

10:52 PM
@MarcelKrüger ooh colr

@AlanMunn My motivation? I'm annoyed by this. And personally, I'm condescendingly called a buddy (with intention) of a respectable user they call (scare-quoting) "mathematician" as degrading offense. Why raising it here? Because it's the place I know I can chat with topanswers.xyz users because topanswers.xyz is permanently frequently advertised here (I'm even forced to advertise that site when I simply use a standard reply. Clever spam.)

@PauloCereda that's American spelling for you, they were trying so hard to miss out the u and they over-reacted and dropped an o as well.

Well, what would a chat be without a bit of drama ;-) just somebody kindling a small fire at occasions, also I can get trapped by that.

11:08 PM
@StefanKottwitz Only yesterday I was thinking how drama free we've been of late. I like that.

@AlanMunn Do you watch Twitter occasionally? I innocently started using it again and now I daily notice trending drama hashtags. That's by far enough for me.
Thanks for the bookmark star at the right sidebar. :-)

@StefanKottwitz No I'm not on Twitter really.

@AlanMunn Good choice! It's somehow strange entertainment I guess if one simply browses it, though there should be good channels for fast information. (The big hack today is an issue though)

@StefanKottwitz If replying to my name troubles you, the first 3 or 4 letters should be enough to ping me (and fyi the purpose of the name is not spam, but primarily as information to the users of tex.se to make sure they are not surprised if they don't get replies to their comments)

11:25 PM
@StefanKottwitz -- Thinking of "small fires" reminds me of (totally different frame of reference) the very recent photos of the sun's surface. There are small eruptions not earlier detected, and the term applied to them is "campfires".

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz @Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz What is permanently frequently repeating a web site URL if it's not spam? I did not even mention @jack-says-try-topanswers-xyz or @tom-v-try-topanswers-xyz because they advertise but at least not in every chat line.

11:52 PM
@barbarabeeton Thanks, interesting! I looked it up on CNN. I wonder about the "small" campfires, if they may have the size of the Earth :-o did not see it there.
I'm not very surprised that on a huge fireball with huges flares there are small and very small flares too, if you look closer and closer. I like fractals since I was a kid, and it reminds me of that.

@StefanKottwitz -- Well, they're small relative to the size of the enormous jets that one often sees shooting out of the corona when watching a total eclipse.
