12:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, that solution brings a blank space that I don't want

12:17 AM
@manooooh beamer <> processing is complicated as it is, does nested use ever work? how do you want these two things to differ?
\only<3-4>{
\item<3-> More text
\item<4-> More more text
}

\item<3-4> More text
\item<4> More more text

@DavidCarlisle That's probably the best idea

@manooooh that's what I meant with my first comment

With that in mind, I figured out that in the last slides, the \only is not necessary anymore, so I can delete it and some \items will be lonely

4 hours later…
4:42 AM
I am using the dark night mode in overleaf
but when I write a comment, it is not visible. Can we change the color of the comment? can we change this in settings?

5:05 AM
I don't even know what is overleaf.

5:16 AM
@BAYMAX Click on the Help button and then Contact us

hehe thanks!

5:30 AM
@BAYMAX They usually reply at once :)

Yup I will do that!

2 hours later…
7:53 AM
@Rmano is there an easy method to get something like this tex.stackexchange.com/a/341258/117050 without that crude hack? If not I'll have to dig through the component definitions :(

2 hours later…
9:40 AM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Yes, \ctikzset{tripoles/european not symbol=ieee circle} (page 118 of the manual). Use circle instead of ieee circle if you like a smaller one.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Sorry for the delay I was (still am) in a (virtual, of course) meeting ... ;-)

10:00 AM
ooh a virtual squirrel

@PauloCereda and a multitasking one, too... /doing three things at the same time, all of them badly :-(/

@Rmano oh no

10:22 AM
@Rmano no problem, thanks for your time :)
@Rmano now I know why I didn't find it, the manual on texdoc.net is too outdated :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Yes, I think that texdoc.net is updated manually.

yo'
10:41 AM
@Rmano well, yes, FWIW it really basically just runs texdoc in a TL installation it has, so whatever it has, it has :-)

10:59 AM
@StefanKottwitz oh my

11:51 AM
@PauloCereda are you there?

@UlrikeFischer Yes!

@PauloCereda could you try (not urgent) if you get the output from the screenshot here: tex.stackexchange.com/a/220722/2388. I get a shifted image (relativ to the text) and wonder if it is me ...

@UlrikeFischer Sure, hold on!

@PauloCereda I had just a very cunning idea and tested in learnlatex org, and there it is shifted too ...

@UlrikeFischer Is the image a full A4 one?

11:56 AM
@PauloCereda It should be letter. But the main point is that the text is more to the right now. But as long as we didn't break it ...

@UlrikeFischer ^^

@PauloCereda you mean the duck will get the blame?

For me, it looks the same with or without the ShipoutPicture
@UlrikeFischer oh no

@PauloCereda really? I get this:

Let me recheck.

12:04 PM
while the answer from Karl shows this:

@UlrikeFischer yes, you are right. With Karl's example, I get the same issue.

@UlrikeFischer it seems to have I see a change between TL2016 and TL2017, TL2017+ seems to give me the same

The image is shifted to the left

I only see a scahnge in size of the image

@daleif yes that is probably the change. In any case: it is not my fault ;-)

12:16 PM
@UlrikeFischer ooh

@PauloCereda isn't it just scaled differently?

@daleif I didn't notice, let me check again.

The 2020 version is using a PDF the 2016 version a png

@daleif it looks the same size for me

On my system in TL2020 it uses a PDF version of the image reported by pdfinfo to have a size of 320 x 240 pts
In TL2016 it ises a PNG with a size (reported by pdflatex) of 401.5pt x 301.125pt

12:38 PM
Package pdftex.def Info: example-image.pdf used on input line 19.
(pdftex.def)             Requested size: 321.19922pt x 240.8994pt
@daleif ^^

@PauloCereda exactly and the 2016 version (PNG) was bigger

@daleif ooh

So it seems the only thing changed is the order of which extensions are tried when an image is listed without extension
Which of course is appropriate as we'd probably want pdf files to have a larger priority than pngs

1:40 PM
@daleif yes, I checked the pdftex.def.

2:05 PM
Timetable for TUG20 seems to be online: tug.org/tug2020/sched.html
5

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz yes. Now somebody will have to tell me, what this means in german time ;-)

@UlrikeFischer I had the same question :)

@PhelypeOleinik I just tried to compile with the lthooks branch and got an error with siunitx as \tex_everydisplay:D is no longer defined. Any idea what is going on here?

@UlrikeFischer ooh
I like how they mixed up my two talks

@UlrikeFischer In the latex2e repo? I think I know what that might be...

2:17 PM
@PhelypeOleinik find which time that wacky timezone means for us, please. :)

@UlrikeFischer That's weird

@UlrikeFischer Here:
\tex_ifdefined:D \@@end
  \tex_let:D \tex_end:D                  \@@end
  \tex_let:D \tex_everydisplay:D         \frozen@everydisplay
  \tex_let:D \tex_everymath:D            \frozen@everymath
  \tex_let:D \tex_hyphen:D               \@@hyph
  \tex_let:D \tex_input:D                \@@input
  \tex_let:D \tex_italiccorrection:D     \@@italiccorr
  \tex_let:D \tex_underline:D            \@@underline
@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright Now with loading expl3 earlier, \@@end is defined, but \frozen@everydisplay (and a bunch others) isn't (yet). I'll need to change l3names a bit

@PhelypeOleinik Ah, right, of course

@PauloCereda Seems to start just after the lunch here :-)

@PhelypeOleinik I really have a knack, I install the format, run the first document that comes into my way and boom. Happily I didn't go in chemistry.

2:20 PM
@JosephWright @UlrikeFischer I'll sort it out later today
@UlrikeFischer That's probably why @DavidCarlisle always blames you

@PhelypeOleinik OK, I'll leave it with you
@UlrikeFischer Looking at the color space business and the code you set up, if we decide spot colors only work in PDFs, we are OK with the object stuff I think (as that works via PostScript but not in the PostScript). It's only if we need to support spot colors directly in PostScript we have an issue.

(I really miss indico's feature to show dates in local time zones for the TUG program)

@UlrikeFischer I think at present we go with just-PDF: if someone really needs PostScript, they hopefully can tell us what is supposed to appear in the file, even if they don't know how to do it themselves

@JosephWright yes, I quite agree. If the need arise one can always create some "only-postscript-backend".

@UlrikeFischer OK, I'll implement shortly

2:30 PM
@PhelypeOleinik cool, now which time do you lunch? :)
@UlrikeFischer ooh boom

@PauloCereda We should setup a website with a table "Paulo's time" "Samcarter, Ulrike's (and Bär's) time" "Joseph's time" ... ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh I like this idea A LOT
We could come up with a GitHub repository and make a time table suitable for human beings that are typically lost with those devilish timezones!
That's why I still have a second watch with Germany time, so I don't have to deal with timezones when I finally visit Germany. :)

@PauloCereda I was thinking to create a .ical file, the calender app should then automatically make the conversion to local time

@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz ooh more tech

2:40 PM
@UlrikeFischer websites like this exist of course. (The thing is that I forgot what it was as I don't use these)
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz That's not the most reasonable schedule I'm afraid, but if it works for TUG, the whatever, probably

@yo' I would be rather surprised if a website with "Paulo's talk is at 20.00 of Bär's time" existed already ;-).

@UlrikeFischer given an infinite number of multiverses ....

yo'
@UlrikeFischer yeah, not that one in particular, but sites where anything is shown in anyone's timezone etc.
Why is the TUG schedule in the most obscure of the US timezones? :( I'll miss like 70% of the conference I'm afraid, it's all like middle of the night

Does anyone knows a hack how to copy the text from the TUG Program? (abstracts are not necessary, just the times, speaker name and title)

yo'
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V and keep only lines containing the vertical bar?

2:46 PM
@yo' Already tried that. This will give me

@yo' Thanks a lot!

yo'
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz you're welcome!

@PhelypeOleinik ooh will there be dessert?

yo'
2:48 PM
Now how can I from CEST add events to GCal in PDT?

@PauloCereda Does wine count as dessert? :-)

@PhelypeOleinik you naughty Brazilian :)

@yo' Import an .ics file :)

@PauloCereda I'm well behaved U_U

yo'
@samcarter_is_at_topanswers.xyz no, there's actually an option for it :-)

2:49 PM
@PhelypeOleinik o.O

@JosephWright so you're on at 10:15 Saturday morning

yo'
@DavidCarlisle that should be correct, yes

@yo' I'm a mathematician I can add on 8, but thought chemists might need a hand.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle well, don't take me wrong, but this all is always confusing me, and I also am an mathematician :-)

@DavidCarlisle Looks that way

3:03 PM
I won't appear in my own talk, that might solve the timezone issue. :)

3:17 PM
@UlrikeFischer I've added the PDF structure creation, conditional on the PDF resoruce management being loaded; at present it doesn't cover Lab, but that's my next task

3:29 PM
Hey @PhelypeOleinik. How goes it? I hope you are staying safe.

@JosephWright I will look if this is still all valid ;-) I changed my mind over a few names while cleaning up.

cis
A problem:

Q: pgfplotstable: String replace in a table with meta-data from another table

cisI have a main-table Data.txt with some contents col1, col2, col3 a, b, c x, y, z aaa, abc, xyz where I want to replace some strings. If I say \pgfplotsinvokeforeach{x,y,z}{ \pgfplotstableset{string replace={#1}{was #1} } } % works it works well. But if I use another table MetaData.txt actual...

3:54 PM
@yo' -- Here's my understanding of why the schedule is based on PDT. Each speaker's time zone was determined, the number of speakers in each time zone was used to weight the calculation, and the closest time zone designated as the nominal time. (I think it's inconvenient for everyone; about half the talks are scheduled during my "sleep time" too. I haven't registered yet, because I don't have Zoom available.)
@PhelypeOleinik -- If it's something like Tokay.

@cis I don't know if you saw my answer, but anyways, I completely misunderstood, so I deleted it. Sorry about the noise.

cis
I was adding the hint:

*Note that these are arbitrary examples, instead of replacing 'a' with '1' it could be also the replacement from 'u' with 'whatever'.*

@barbarabeeton I understood that all talks had to be recorded in advance, so speakers only had to be available por potential Q&A...

@PauloCereda Exactly
@PauloCereda I'm planning to do mine next week

@JosephWright Same here.
@JosephWright If you need any help/editing, just poke me. :)

4:08 PM
@FaheemMitha Hello! I'm doing great, thanks for asking :-) This are relatively calm (so far) around here, given the circumstances. What about you?

@PauloCereda -- I think "had to be recorded in advance" is too definitive. My understanding is that it's encouraged, but not required. Send a message to tug2020 for clarification. (It'll be appreciated by everybody.) Also mention that your two talks are switched.

@barbarabeeton It's an artisanal dry red wine (is that how you call it?), from a local winery. The man who started this winery can't make it anymore, unfortunately, due to old age, so his son has taken the business. I must say, though, the he has learned quite well from his dad. It's delicious!

@PhelypeOleinik -- Sounds really good, but doesn't sound like dessert. (I hope the young vintner succeeds in continuing the tradition. "Encourage the locals," especially when they're doing a good job.)

@UlrikeFischer I'm not sure about putting both the alternative model and values in one key (Lab will have the same thing): I'd appreciate your thoughts
I'm looking forward to Frank's talk!
I bet @DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer, @egreg, @MarcelKrüger and @PhelypeOleinik are too :) (We probably know what he's going to say)

@barbarabeeton mail sent. :)

4:21 PM
@JosephWright I will look. Just testing the b argument with hooks ...

@barbarabeeton he could go with Nutella pizza, which is good.

@JosephWright @UlrikeFischer I'm doing a future-proof testing of the expl3 primitives and there are some I can't pinpoint the origin. The first two ones are \pdfxformattr and \pdfxformresources: where are they from?

@JosephWright ooh spoilers

@JosephWright Oh, definitely!

@UlrikeFischer Cool
@PhelypeOleinik pdfTeX
@PhelypeOleinik :)
@PauloCereda Nope, I am saying nothing

4:22 PM
@PauloCereda -- We keep telling you, Nutella is good, but it's not pizza.

@JosephWright I thought so, but pdftex '\show \pdfxformattr'
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.21 (TeX Live 2020) (preloaded format=pdftex)
 restricted \write18 enabled.
entering extended mode
> \pdfxformattr=undefined.
<*> \show \pdfxformattr

?

@PhelypeOleinik Oh, no, they were LuaTeX pre-v0.95

@JosephWright you are mean :)

@PhelypeOleinik Things are scary here. But I suppose they are scary in Brazil too.

@JosephWright will go to Wikipedia, there's a lot of spoilers there, surely Frank's will be there too. :)
@barbarabeeton :)

4:24 PM
@JosephWright So they don't exist anymore?

@PhelypeOleinik Exactly
@PhelypeOleinik Didn't I remove them?

@JosephWright You did now :-)

@PhelypeOleinik don't they have a new name?
@PhelypeOleinik see luatex85:
\protected\edef\pdfxformattr           {\pdfvariable xformattr}
\protected\edef\pdfxformresources      {\pdfvariable xformresources}

2 mins ago, by Paulo Cereda
@JosephWright you are mean :)

@FaheemMitha Depends on where you are. I live in a small town, so things are pretty quiet so far corona-wise. But it will eventually get here, unfortunately

4:27 PM
@PhelypeOleinik I might have missed some LuaTeX removals: the plan is to have primitives that are in pdfTeX that we use (there are a few real oddities I never added)

@UlrikeFischer Hm, so define these for LuaTeX?

@PhelypeOleinik ARGH NO

@PhelypeOleinik I live in the opposite of a small town. :-)

@PhelypeOleinik I would say only if some real use case comes up. We are trying to keep the code backend independant so this extra commands are not really used.

@JosephWright I see some objection here :-) Makes sense, since we don't even define \tex_strcmp:D for LuaTeX
@UlrikeFischer Okay, thanks! I'll sort these out
@FaheemMitha I really don't like big cities. Far too many people in too small spaces

4:31 PM
@PhelypeOleinik Exactly: primitives are limited to exactly that, real ones
@PhelypeOleinik I've zapped in l3names

@PhelypeOleinik this is in latex3 or latex2e?

@PhelypeOleinik I don't like them either, though of course they have some advantages.
In any case, I live in one of the world's biggest cities. And it's (still I think) the epicenter of India's coronavirus epidemic.

@PhelypeOleinik JOSEPH IS HAPPY

@JosephWright I'm making a test here to make sue all primitives are what they are supposed to be, so @UlrikeFischer can't take me by surprise again :-)
@FaheemMitha Ah, there's that. I leave about 200 km from Curitiba, one of the biggest cities in Brazil, so it's a reasonable distance if I need something from there (an airport, for example), but that's hardly ever the case
@PauloCereda CAPS-LOCK-HAPPY!

@PhelypeOleinik OOH

4:35 PM
@PhelypeOleinik Shopping and medical facilities come to mind. Also entertainment venues, perhaps. But I'm not familiar with Brazil.

@FaheemMitha Yeah, we needed that when my grandma had a surgery in her heart
@FaheemMitha Also we didn't have a cinema here until about a year ago. Now that we have one, it's closed :-|

@PhelypeOleinik Wow, you must live in a small town. Shades of "Cinema Paradiso", if you've seen that.

@JosephWright new Overcooked! 2 DLC, by the way. :)

@FaheemMitha is it bigger than Souldern?, we have almost 200 houses here.

@DavidCarlisle toodle pip cheerio

4:41 PM
@PauloCereda dinner time

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle Yes, it's bigger than Souldern.

@FaheemMitha I never saw that one. I't not that small (about 60k people), but the one cinema we had wend bankrupt because it had the same one movie for about a month, then it took some time until someone was brave enough to try again
@DavidCarlisle Seems like a nice quiet place to live :-)

@PhelypeOleinik Try again? You mean, with a new cinema? I don't see why showing the same movie for a month would lead to bankruptcy.

@PauloCereda see page 9: 3parishesnews.files.wordpress.com/2020/07/july-issue.pdf (important news from the next village)

4:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh <3

@PhelypeOleinik what is/was the problem with tabularx? I tried the test file and it compiles fine.

@FaheemMitha Yes, a new cinema. Because people don't usually watch the same movie twice (not in the cinema, at least), and with the amount of people that actually go to the movies, after the first week the seats were all empty

@PhelypeOleinik they should cut the broadband. :)

@UlrikeFischer Now it does, with the workarounds added. But if there's anything actually in the hook, then tabularx fails to detect the contents of \endzz (assuming that's the environment).

@DavidCarlisle ^^
I am going to create teh best duck picture ever

4:48 PM
@PauloCereda I know:-)

@PauloCereda At that time we only had internet on Saturday after 3 pm

I will win this contest
@PhelypeOleinik I know the feeling. :)

@PhelypeOleinik Sounds like someone messed up. But it also sounds like the cinema had little reserve capital.

@PhelypeOleinik ah, the zz hook, not tabularx.

Actually, with streaming, I'm surprised that people go to the cinema at all.

4:50 PM
@FaheemMitha Yeah, a large mix of bad management strategies (also the movies they shower were crappy :-)

@PauloCereda note this is official government stuff parish councils are official bodies with (limited) tax raising powers/

I haven't been since 2008.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle So how are things in Souldern?

@UlrikeFischer Yes, the problem is that tabularx currently expects that two expansions of \end{zz} will expand the \endzz macro (not sure why not test \endzz directly, but...), and anything you put in the hook makes that fail

4:51 PM
Can you go out and about without interference?

@FaheemMitha busy, I think I heard a car go past at one point.

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle Ooh.
Sorry, I hope @PauloCereda has not copyrighted that.

@DavidCarlisle as long as it does not hit the willow tree, you will be fine. :)
@FaheemMitha it's public domain, carry on. :)

We went to eat at the pub last night (eat in a tent in the garden) first time since lockdown. I have actually only been out of the village twice since start of March

4:52 PM
I wonder what life is like in a small Oxfordshire village. Hopefully, sylvan.
I've always thought South England quite pretty.
I've hardly left my home since mid-March. It's now been 4 months. I don't get out much in general, but this is getting to be a bit much even for me.
Of course, given all the terrifying things that are going on, I shouldn't complain.
The news I'm reading on the net is quite hair-raising.
Though happily TeX SE seems largely unaffected.

5:10 PM
> The name of the four ghosts in Pac-man are Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde.
ooh

1 hour later…
6:22 PM
schrödinger: open your present honey
schrodinger's daughter: *already crying* daddy no please

@PhelypeOleinik wow

@PauloCereda Cyanide and Happiness is terrible :D

@PhelypeOleinik ooh

@JosephWright I just tried \color_model_new:nnn {blub}{Separation}{name=BarTone,alternative-space={rgb:1,1,1}} and get the error
! LaTeX3 Error: Separation color space 'rgb:1,1,1' require an alternative
(LaTeX3)        space.

7:09 PM

8:05 PM
@UlrikeFischer At the moment you need to use a cat code 12 colon: see the test files

@JosephWright yes, just realize that.

@JosephWright Should I update texmf in the latex2e repo or better wait for the l3kernel release?

@PhelypeOleinik could you also merge the change into the color-models branch?

@UlrikeFischer Right away

@JosephWright /l3color1 cs /l3color1 CS 0.2 scn 0.2 SCN ;-)

8:29 PM
If anyone is interested in playing with crazy new engines, luametalatex is starting to become almost usable and I would appreciate some testing. (It only works with the dev branch of luaotfload and both microtype and luacolor are incompatible, but it's a start...) It should even work on Windows if the 64-bit version of luametatex is used.
6

@MarcelKrüger oh no, another engine to support at latexcgi.xyz :-)

@MarcelKrüger hm. How do one get the binaries in the path?

@UlrikeFischer export PATH=/somewhere:$PATH on sensible systems:-)

@UlrikeFischer You can download the windows binary from lmtx.pragma-ade.com/install-lmtx/tex/texmf-win64/bin/…
Then it is best to copy the into your existing TeXLive binary directory.
@DavidCarlisle That might lead to issues because kpathsea is used which identifies it's config files based on the path of the engine. So it's probably easier to use the default binary dir.

@DavidCarlisle well I wonder if it can simply point to the one in the context-ltmx folder or if it will get confused if the binary is in a completly different texmf ...

8:38 PM
@MarcelKrüger oh yes of course better to be in the main tree

9:31 PM
@UlrikeFischer Cool
@DavidCarlisle More seriously, L3

@JosephWright well yes that's what I meant, more fun with the test suite I guess

@JosephWright you only need to replace \pdfdict_gput by \pdfcoredict_gput. What does "and also creates a second model under the multiple model approach described earlier" mean?

9:57 PM
I am using a template which apparently adds spaces between sentences if the page is not full
What's causing this? And how to avoid it?

In case anyone is interested in importing the events from TUG20 into their calender, I created an .ics file: gist.githubusercontent.com/samcarter/… (no warranty in case of errors or changes in the timetable)
@nbro between sentences or paragraphs?

@nbro between paragraphs I would guess, not between sentences. \flushbottom

No, the template doesn't contain \flushbottom
Even between items of enumerate it adds spaces
many spaces

@nbro why ask questions in riddles?
@nbro that is expected from \flushbottom

The template doesn't contain any \flushbottom command

10:01 PM
@nbro book level classes typically use \flushbottom but they expect pages to be full. How come you have short pages causing the white space to be stretched?

this is a thesis template
I never defined a custom template so I have no idea of how they work

@nbro you are describing the behaviour of \flushbottom in any case, and since you have shown no code presumably it is being used or a functionally equivalent command is defined. either way \raggedbottom would move the space to the bottom

I found this
\DeclareOption*{%
\PassOptionsToClass{\CurrentOption}{book}%
}

@nbro so as we said. \flushbottom is in effect.

And how can we avoid it?

are you sure you want to avoid it, the reason for being given a document class is to force a house style, but as I say above \raggedbottom is the opposite of \flushbottom
@nbro why are your pages short?

What do you mean by "short"?
I haven't yet finished writing the page, that's why there are spaces
But it bothers me to see a lot of white useless spaces

@nbro but why doesn't the text from the next page come over to the page that is being stretched. It is exactly the same as linebreaking, \raggedright puts all the space at the right, the default justified breaking normally looks better but if you put strange things in the paragraph some lines will have inter-word spaces stretched too much and it looks bad.
You seem to have this bad case so the problem is not really the \flushbottom it is whatever you have in your document that is stopping good page breaks

The only thing that I did was creating sections (i.e. only the titles of the sections). I didn't change the template

@nbro oh well you can't have a section heading on its own at the bottom of a page so if you haven't written enough text under each heading the section heading will be forced to the next page leaving the current page over stretched, \raggedbottom will fix that (and it's a faq on the main site:-)

ha, then that's the problem
Well, I wrote down the sections to know what I have to write about

A: Why does latex stretch small sections across the whole page vertically?

Leo LiuLaTeX uses \flushbottom for two-sided documents (book by default). Odd pages and even pages are forced to be aligned. In one-sided documents (article, report by default) LaTeX uses \raggedbottom, extra spaces will gone. cf. classes document. You can use \raggedbottom if you meet too many bad pag...

Ok, thank you!
This is just a temporary solution. Then I will get rid of raggedbottom (If I don't forget it)
No, it's better not to use, or I will forget about it

@nbro excellent: latex has beaten another user into submission. The rise of the machines...

Omg, no

@MarcelKrüger A simple document worked, calling texgyreheros directly seems to worked to (but it doesn't show up in the log ... ) but when I tried to use fontspec I got errors:
