@AlexG Should be fixed in the next release: github.com/latex3/latex3/commit/6173068

12:43 AM
@AlanMunn -- Can you take a look at this? tex.stackexchange.com/q/536052 I don't know what it is, but I've put myself out on a limb by saying it's not used in linguistics. I hope you can tell me I don't have to take a saw and cut myself off. (If you do tell me I'm doomed then you probably know what the thing is, and where to find documentation.)
Oh, that question also has a pending edit, which I've rejected for the reason I've also given in a comment to one of the "answers". (@egreg -- Might you be willing to kill off the edit? You wrote a comment that makes me believe you agree with me, at least regarding the proposed edit of the question heading, which I'm sure is misguided.)

@barbarabeeton I've never seen it, but I'd never seen the lower case version (which is in the Ladusaw and Pullum Phonetic Symbol Guide. I can see someone finding the lower case version and making an upper case version to match (of course the name would be non-compositional, but hey, that's language change...)
@barbarabeeton So I'm quite in favour of calling it an upper case qp ligature.

@AlanMunn -- But I think that the text of the question heading shouldn't be changed to use that name. That's not what the OP asked -- s/he really doesn't know the name. And I'll have to unbury my copy of L&P and explore. (Did you know that Pullum uses LaTeX? He spent a semester at Brown a few years ago, and I attended a lecture. It was immediately obvious that his slides were prepared with beamer. I suggested that, if the book was updated, he should include Unicode references.
He said he would.) Do you know whether an update has been done?

2:14 AM
@barbarabeeton Yes, I wasn't commenting on the edit. Yes, I knew Pullum uses LaTeX. It's very popular among the west coast linguists (which is what he was for a long time). I have no idea about an update.

@UlrikeFischer WOOOO

@barbarabeeton I rejected the proposed edit.

9:33 AM
@UlrikeFischer I'd put ~ between equation and \eqref, but else a great answer!

I'm currently drafting a new package `expkv-cs` and unsure what'd be the best interface. The package shall allow users to create an expandable key=value taking macro, but I can't decide on how things should be done. I currently have two different ideas on how the value of a key could be accessed, the first being as separate arguments to a macro (this doesn't scale too well, but for up to 9 keys this could be an easy interface if the macro doesn't take other arguments) [...]

[...] or within a single argument and a helper macro needing two steps to access the value of an individual key like

No one got 2ct? :(

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Could you post a couple of examples?

@JosephWright macros aren't implemented yet, so no, only what I got for syntax as ideas :) I'll write something up.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I meant interface demos :)

11:29 AM
@JosephWright my current syntax concepts would look something like this:
\documentclass[]{article}

\makeatletter
%% define a macro taking one kv-argument and split that into multiple arguments
%% provided to the code. The arguments will be provided in the order you
%% specified the keys
\ekvcsplitted\mymacroA
  {
    ,length=1cm
    ,height=2cm
    ,raise=0pt
  }
  {%
    \rule[{#3}]{#2}{#1}%
  }

%% an equivalent macro using a two-step approach. This theoretically allows for
%% indefinite keys by currying the auxiliary macros.
\ekvcsplitandforward\mymacroB\mymacroB@aux

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I like the first version

I thought possible integration with xparse's \NewExpandableDocumentCommand could be a good idea as well, but I haven't decided how such an interface should look like or whether it would be better to keep it separate such that users could do \NewExpandableDocumentCommand \foo { O{} m } {\mymacroB{#1}{#2}}, I guess that's the way to go.
@JosephWright the first version has the downside of limiting to 9 keys. I could support all four as well.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Depends really what you want to acheive, but it's hard to make things fully-expandable without worrying about passing arguments

@JosephWright well, macros created like this would really be a niche usecase. There aren't that many fairly complicated but fully expandable macros which would benefit from this.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz You need user stories ;)

11:40 AM
@JosephWright well, in the end you can get around being fully expandable most of the time. It's just a nice little challenge we the TeX-programmers like to keep around...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz OK, so the user story is beating Ulrich Diez ;)
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Or BLF or ... @DavidCarlisle

@JosephWright I don't think I can compete with BLF.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz :)

11:52 AM
@JosephWright on CTAN are only 2 packages written by him. Did he write anything else I should know?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz He's known for his comprehenisve ansers

@JosephWright is he active lately?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Yes

@JosephWright just took a look. 21h ago. And boy that answer is comprehensive...

yo'
12:13 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz yeah. Bruno is fabulous!

@yo' especially his l3fp.

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz yep.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz See what I mean ;)

How do you get your co-ordinates right? Is it just trial and error or are there some nice hacks to get what you want. This is a question about TikZ.

@FakeMod That's a very broad question: can you be more specific

user434058
1:52 PM
For example, I usually draw figures side by side (sending an example below) and thus I always have to get the coordinates right such that the figures are spaced nicely and placed somewhat symmetrically. And for this I try varying coordinates untill I get a good enough figure. This isn't the only case. Like drawing in TikZ feels like drawing without a reference grid. So I have to guess all the coordinates, compile the code, see themoutput, tweak the code until it gets better....

user434058

user434058
I created this figure to illustrate Pappus' theorem. So here I had to guess the centre of the ellipse whic defines the path of the arrow. Also the coordinatoes of the central arroew were found by trial and error!

user434058
I might be taking a lot of time to find coordinates maybe because I am a beginner, but there has to be a simpler way, right?

user434058
By the way, the tick mark in the centre there was taken from a post here on Tex SE.

2:22 PM
@FakeMod you can define and reference coordinates and use the positioning library. Also you can put stuff in scopes and shift those scopes as a whole.
Hi, @CarLaTeX! How are you?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Well, thanks! And you?

@CarLaTeX Well as well :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Let's keep fingers crossed :)

@CarLaTeX From time to time I'd love to go outside play some football with friends, so let's keep fingers crossed that the situation will get better soon (in addition to keeping fingers crossed that we stay well)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz :)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle I thought you would answer that when I saw the question in the morning ;-)

@UlrikeFischer hmm you have that low opinion of me? :-)

@DavidCarlisle high opinion of your digging abilities in the arcane parts of tex ;-)

ARTHUR
@ArthurReutenauer Hi!

4:16 PM
Coding that new package proves harder than expected. My wife and children won't let me... :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh little bunnies and Mrs. Rabbit

@egreg -- Thanks. Got another question you might be able to help with: tex.stackexchange.com/q/535950 (a problem with ntheorem). I've gone as far as I can go (and confirmed that amsthm does not have a similar problem).

5:15 PM
@barbarabeeton Found the glitch and another reason for avoiding ntheorem.

5:35 PM
@JosephWright 123 lines of code and a first draft with your preferred syntax is done.

5:51 PM
@egreg -- Thanks. I've sent a message to the listed maintainers, cc to you. We'll see what happens.

@barbarabeeton CNN is unlocked for me during the quarantine. I just saw the news: those are frightening predictions for mid April in the US!

New York is really taking a beating. I wonder how frightened I should be.

Is anyone here a chktex expert (or perhaps just got better reading comprehension than me)? I'm trying to configure a local chktexrc, and I can't really make heads or tails of how the dashes settings work. Here's the relevant part of the default rc file (which is supposed to be self-documenting): github.com/sharelatex/chktex/blob/master/chktexrc#L399-L441

@FaheemMitha -- Just being frightened isn't going to help anyone. The most effective reaction is to isolate yourself in a controlled environment, keep track of whom you come into close physical contact with, and wash your hands! It's comforting to me to learn that the lipid coating of this virus will dissolve with application of soap and friction.

@barbarabeeton I'm already doing all those things.

6:06 PM
@FaheemMitha -- Then keep it up. For once, it's an advantage to have most of one's social life taking place online. (Not so good as far as physical exercise goes, but ...)

6:23 PM
@barbarabeeton I'm not sure how much any of that will helped. I live in one of the largest cities in the world. And it's in India.

@FaheemMitha -- You should just do the best you can, and encourage the people around you to do the same. And good luck!

@barbarabeeton Thank you. Good luck to you too. And sorry about your President. Nobody deserves him.

Hi @PauloCereda :-)

@FaheemMitha -- Thank you. The radio station I listen to stopped broadcasting his "news conferences" last week. I just hope that we make it safely to election day and that his mindless adherents become disaffected by then.

@barbarabeeton I think everyone hopes he doesn't get a second term.
Nobody wants to find out how he'll handle the next emergency.

user434058
6:41 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I know, but its weird that xshift and yshift never work when I use them, so I have to resort to hspace and vspace or their * versions....

6:56 PM
My confusion re chktex in case anyone is bored and feels like a puzzle. tex.stackexchange.com/q/536190/29387

7:18 PM
@FaheemMitha -- Unfortunately, opinion polls indicate that more than 50% of those asked apparently think he's doing a good job. I just hope that the pollsters have asked the wrong people.

@barbarabeeton That's incredible.

@FaheemMitha -- Sad but true.

Hi everybody! How can I run a Lua script on the commandline, using Lua that ships with TeXLive?
(I am Lua nooooob.)

@AlexG texlua script.lua?

@FaheemMitha I vote for Charlie Chaplin: Charlie Chaplin - The Great Dictator ;-)

7:25 PM
@UlrikeFischer Thanks, Ulrike! More questions to come ;-)

@UlrichDiez Oh. You like the classics? :-)

@FaheemMitha Yeah. That is also one of the reasons why I find it so difficult with expl3. ;-)

Next Lua Q: From within TeX I want to load a Lua script that defines functions. How do I load such a script?

@AlexG texlua myluafile.lua
@UlrikeFischer oh you said that:-)

@DavidCarlisle But a second Q appeared just before your reply.

7:35 PM
@AlexG \directlua{require('wibble')}

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! I am going to try this.

@AlexG if you are trying to get in to this I highly recommend the chickenize package. It only has silly text transforms, but it is a serious example of how to use lua and luatex callbacks in particular from tex.

@DavidCarlisle Oh, I'll go and have a look at it immediately!
@DavidCarlisle Does file wibble end with .lua?

@AlexG the file does but the argument doesn't need to (and normally doesn't)

@DavidCarlisle Ok.

7:48 PM
@AlexG require('foo') is normal lua for requiring foo which can end in several ways. (I.e., it may be a .lua file, but it might be a compiled binary. It helps remove that part of the puzzle from the programmer (or user).)

@Telemachus you can edit a posted comment (like this:-)

Oops.
@DavidCarlisle Sweet! Thanks.

@Telemachus just in time:-)

@Telemachus So many Lua connaisseurs here at the same time. Great!

@AlexG Sadly for you (or me? or both?) I know Lua much better than I know LaTeX.

7:53 PM
@Telemachus For (La)TeX questions @DavidCarlisle is never far away.
(And others, of course!)

1 hour later…
9:04 PM
@FakeMod did you also use transform shape? That often does the trick if rotation or shifting doesn't apply to some objects.
