@AlanMunn -- Can you take a look at this? tex.stackexchange.com/q/536052 I don't know what it is, but I've put myself out on a limb by saying it's not used in linguistics. I hope you can tell me I don't have to take a saw and cut myself off. (If you do tell me I'm doomed then you probably know what the thing is, and where to find documentation.)

Oh, that question also has a pending edit, which I've rejected for the reason I've also given in a comment to one of the "answers". (@egreg -- Might you be willing to kill off the edit? You wrote a comment that makes me believe you agree with me, at least regarding the proposed edit of the question heading, which I'm sure is misguided.)

@barbarabeeton I've never seen it, but I'd never seen the lower case version (which is in the Ladusaw and Pullum Phonetic Symbol Guide. I can see someone finding the lower case version and making an upper case version to match (of course the name would be non-compositional, but hey, that's language change...)

@barbarabeeton So I'm quite in favour of calling it an upper case qp ligature.

@AlanMunn -- But I think that the text of the question heading shouldn't be changed to use that name. That's not what the OP asked -- s/he really doesn't know the name. And I'll have to unbury my copy of L&P and explore. (Did you know that Pullum uses LaTeX? He spent a semester at Brown a few years ago, and I attended a lecture. It was immediately obvious that his slides were prepared with beamer. I suggested that, if the book was updated, he should include Unicode references.

He said he would.) Do you know whether an update has been done?

@barbarabeeton Yes, I wasn't commenting on the edit. Yes, I knew Pullum uses LaTeX. It's very popular among the west coast linguists (which is what he was for a long time). I have no idea about an update.

I'm currently drafting a new package `expkv-cs` and unsure what'd be the best interface. The package shall allow users to create an expandable key=value taking macro, but I can't decide on how things should be done. I currently have two different ideas on how the value of a key could be accessed, the first being as separate arguments to a macro (this doesn't scale too well, but for up to 9 keys this could be an easy interface if the macro doesn't take other arguments) [...]

I thought possible integration with xparse's \NewExpandableDocumentCommand could be a good idea as well, but I haven't decided how such an interface should look like or whether it would be better to keep it separate such that users could do \NewExpandableDocumentCommand \foo { O{} m } {\mymacroB{#1}{#2}}, I guess that's the way to go.

@JosephWright the first version has the downside of limiting to 9 keys. I could support all four as well.

@JosephWright well, macros created like this would really be a niche usecase. There aren't that many fairly complicated but fully expandable macros which would benefit from this.

How do you get your co-ordinates right? Is it just trial and error or are there some nice hacks to get what you want. This is a question about TikZ.

For example, I usually draw figures side by side (sending an example below) and thus I always have to get the coordinates right such that the figures are spaced nicely and placed somewhat symmetrically. And for this I try varying coordinates untill I get a good enough figure. This isn't the only case. Like drawing in TikZ feels like drawing without a reference grid. So I have to guess all the coordinates, compile the code, see themoutput, tweak the code until it gets better....

I created this figure to illustrate Pappus' theorem. So here I had to guess the centre of the ellipse whic defines the path of the arrow. Also the coordinatoes of the central arroew were found by trial and error!

I might be taking a lot of time to find coordinates maybe because I am a beginner, but there has to be a simpler way, right?

@FakeMod you can define and reference coordinates and use the positioning library. Also you can put stuff in scopes and shift those scopes as a whole.

Is anyone here a chktex expert (or perhaps just got better reading comprehension than me)? I'm trying to configure a local chktexrc, and I can't really make heads or tails of how the dashes settings work. @FaheemMitha -- Just being frightened isn't going to help anyone. The most effective reaction is to isolate yourself in a controlled environment, keep track of whom you come into close physical contact with, and wash your hands! It's comforting to me to learn that the lipid coating of this virus will dissolve with application of soap and friction.

@AlexG if you are trying to get in to this I highly recommend the chickenize package. It only has silly text transforms, but it is a serious example of how to use lua and luatex callbacks in particular from tex.

@AlexG require('foo') is normal lua for requiring foo which can end in several ways. (I.e., it may be a .lua file, but it might be a compiled binary. It helps remove that part of the puzzle from the programmer (or user).)

@FakeMod did you also use transform shape? That often does the trick if rotation or shifting doesn't apply to some objects.
