Hello all!
Consider this code:
\documentclass[varwidth=\maxdimen]{standalone}
\usepackage{tikz}

\begin{document}

\begin{table}
\thispagestyle{empty}
\centering
\begin{tikzpicture}[font=\LARGE]
\node (table) [inner sep=0pt] {
\setlength\arrayrulewidth{2pt}
\begin{tabular}{c|c|c|c|c|c}
0&1&2&3&4&5\\\hline
1&2&3&4&5&0\\\hline
2&3&4&5&0&1\\\hline
3&4&5&0&1&2\\\hline
4&5&0&1&2&3\\\hline
5&0&1&2&3&4\\
\end{tabular}
};
\draw [rounded corners=.5em,ultra thick] (table.north west) rectangle (table.south east);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{table}
As you can see, there is a small gap between the first black vertical line and the vertical row lines. How can we stick them? Thanks!

6 hours later…
6:13 AM
@manooooh you have spurious spaces:
\node (table) [inner sep=0pt] {%<---
\setlength\arrayrulewidth{2pt}%<---
\begin{tabular}{c|c|c|c|c|c}

@JosephWright ooh

Hmmm something is wrong

9:12 AM
@PauloCereda great hunter, going incognito to get closer to its prey!
@PauloCereda similar to the tactic killer rabbits employ.
"Oh, it's just a rabbit -- AAHHHH"

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz perhaps he wants a duck hug :)

Pushed an update to expkv-def with a new key type data. A data key's macro behaves like \@secondoftwo if unused and if used will be \long\def<cs>#1#2{#1{<val>}}.

9:32 AM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Missed the DVD?

@JosephWright just uploaded it today, so most likely :(

@DavidCarlisle I see you and I are going to end up doing the 'editorial' work for learnlatex.org (to be fair, that was my expectation anyway)
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Indeed: Karl froze last night

@JosephWright to be fair, I found the need for it just today and started coding on it an hour ago...

ooh so Karl is the Elsa of TeX world?
2

I have another idea for a package in the expkv family. expkv-cs to define expandable key-val taking macros with up to 9 keys (that's not much, but more isn't possible to grab in one step and hence if a user needs more keys, he has to define the grabbing logic himself).

9:44 AM
Everyone updating to 'release' TL'20?

@JosephWright I have pretest, just a normal update suffices?

@JosephWright not yet. My master's defence is in two hours. Afterwards I'll update.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz woooooooo

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Good luck
@PauloCereda It's only the question of which repo you use for updats
@PauloCereda Yes

@JosephWright one of the UK repos.

10:22 AM
@JosephWright is there already a release??

@UlrikeFischer Karl said he was freezing last night

@JosephWright yes, but does that means that it is released? I thought the official date will be the 10th april.

@UlrikeFischer Not released, but the pretests won't get more updates

@JosephWright can he refreeze today? :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh Frozen 3
Let it go let it go

10:27 AM
@PauloCereda don't tell my daughters.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'd imagine so

@JosephWright but expkv-cs will take too long, that one won't make it anyway. And as long as he at least has expkv-def v0.1a and not v0.1 on the DVD (the bugfix was published a month ago, so nothing to worry there) it should be fine. Only one keytype will not be available.

@UlrikeFischer beware growing up to be like @egreg
@JosephWright that reminds me, I was going to ask you about that (later)

@DavidCarlisle well, this earns a lot of reputation...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz but none of it well deserved

10:30 AM
@DavidCarlisle unlike picture mode answers!

@DavidCarlisle Skype

Does anyone here have recommendations for SIP clients that would run on Linux? Preferably Debian. But some of those have unofficial Debian repositories.

@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle ^^^ included pdf with links ...

@UlrikeFischer Oooh
@UlrikeFischer Clever

@JosephWright it works with pdflatex, lualatex and xelatex. I didn't try dvips yet, but should work too. It only need a luatex run to create the pax-file(s) with the annotations.

10:45 AM
@PauloCereda sorry missed breakfast, so Dinner

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@UlrikeFischer horrible hyperref default boxy links:-)
@JosephWright @UlrikeFischer I see transparency fun ahead with ghostscript (tex-live list)

@DavidCarlisle well I have to use borders for the links to see if it works ;-). With colored links one would have to use the mouse to check the link all the time.

@UlrikeFischer would there be any way to sandbox that enough to make a script that could go into the restricted shell escape list I wonder...

@DavidCarlisle yes. But you have some code to test the ghostscript version somewhere, so we could add it here too.

10:50 AM
@UlrikeFischer yes or use where to test for the new commands being defined. transparency seems trickier than one would expect:-)

@DavidCarlisle yes, probably. But as it is only a day old and probably has still a number of bugs (I already found one in pax: if you clip an annotation in the middle, it errors ...)

Last rehearsal of my defence done, target time was 15-20min, ended at 17:31.88. Now everything that's left is that the contents are good... And I have an hour left. Any suggestions on how to spend it?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Unwind, relax your mind. If you're too busy right up to the crucial moment, your mind risks going into overdrive when the time comes.

11:05 AM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Listening to Tina Turner's The best? :)

@PauloCereda nah, I don't like it, not my taste.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen not a bad idea. Ended up coding something very straight forward in TeX. That always works to relax me

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Pink Floyd's Learning to fly?

@PauloCereda that's a good idea.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh
Listen the Pulse version, then. :)

@PauloCereda just started the 2011 remaster.

11:07 AM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh

@JosephWright So to start following TL2020 you should reinstall?

@Rmano No!
@Rmano All that happens on release is the source of updates changes: once Karl says things are 'out', the usual CTAN mirror selection works

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Relax and "in bocca al lupo!"
@JosephWright Ah ok, so I just have to change the mirror. Fine. Will look around to find out how, thanks!

@Rmano ooh wolves and socks

11:47 AM

WAIT, WHAT

@PauloCereda :)

@JosephWright people get creative :)

12:00 PM
Good morning very kind users.
@JosephWright Excuse me for 30 seconds?

Q: Reproducing the following "Pi" symbol in Latex

crskhr Can this PI symbol be exactly reproduced in Latex? I have tried various math packages like newtx, newpx,stix etc etc, but their PI shape doesn't match with the one i have in the image. Thank you.

@JosephWright I have put a comment can I make this kind of comment by mentioning Office Word? The symbol requested by the user is Symbol. My best regards.

@Sebastiano Word is irrelevant though: it just matters what font it is. But also it is of course the wrong question (almost always) people shouldn't be asking about individual fonts for individual letters

12:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle Does your advice also concern me (I also ask questions about symbols)? :-)
@DavidCarlisle For my opinion the symbol is the same.
@UlrikeFischer Welcome and my best regards.

@Sebastiano I do not think they look exactly the same. Similar, but not the same.

1:14 PM
@Sebastiano probably a different font but even if they were identical the fact that you used Word is not relevant at all, it is just the font that matters.

1:31 PM
@Sebastiano look at the end of the top bar, you show a vertical edge the question has one sloped at about 45 degrees

@Sebastiano AAAAAAAAHHHHH
I'm done! Today is my last day as a student!

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz 👍
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Not doing PhD?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Congratulations Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz!

@Rmano I am, but I'll earn money being employed by the university and don't really count as a student.
@StefanKottwitz thanks

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Well, well... (imagine Angelina Jolie as Maleficient saying that) ;-P

1:46 PM
Now I'm hungry. Didn't eat before the defence and its 15:45 where I am.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Congrats master rabbit :-)

Hi everybody, I've got a somewhat vague question: I've started using the externalize tikzlibrary (my document has 500+ knots in it), but have run into a strange error. After figuring out how to add orientations to my knots (cf. my previous TeX question), I couldn't compile my document any more.
By accident, I discovered that the problem is fixed by changing \tikzexternalize[prefix=figures/] to \tikzexternalize, i.e. allowing the TeXstudio to make the pictures in the main folder instead of a dedicated subfolder.
To me, this suggests that something is going wrong because some process is unable to retrieve some essential information from the subfolder (maybe because it is unaware of it to begin with)
Any clues on what could be going wrong?
To clarify: The failure to compile only occurs when using tikzexternalize (and, accordingly, the pdflatex -shell-escape document command)

Is it better to draw diagrams using TikZ (assuming that you know how to use it, which would require you to dedicate about 100 hours of "practice") and to draw your diagram you would need to write the code yourself (which again might take significant time for non trivial drawings) OR should you just use a WYSIWYG software for drawing and insert that drawing(in SVG format) to your LaTeX document?

@FakeMod that's like saying is it best to use a pencil or a paintbrush. It depends....
@FakeMod the closer the diagram is to text (eg line plots with lots of textual labels) the more you gain from doing it in tex, to get a consistent appearance, the closer the diagram is to a photograph or artwork, the more you gain from doing it in a visual tool.

user434058
@DavidCarlisle I mainly find myself stuck flipping through the pgfmanual and tweaking co-ordinates to get the right drawing whenever I use TikZ, and all this breaks the workflow and reduces the productivity. I assume a WYSIWYG would make it all faster.

user434058
@DavidCarlisle I am mostly drawing some stuff for physics, like free body diagrams, containers, etc.

@FakeMod possibly faster, possibly not, but some people have commented adversely on my figures produced by graphical tools. I can not imagine why.

A: Multiple captions under a single figure

David CarlisleYou can have as many \caption as you need in a figure \documentclass{article} \usepackage{graphicx} \begin{document} \listoffigures \begin{figure}[thp] \begin{minipage}{.5\textwidth} \centering \includegraphics{man} \caption{man} \end{minipage}% \begin{minipage}{.5\textwidth} \centering \in...

@JosephWright -- I'm willing to help, but I'm not able to get connected to Git.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Break a leg! (You're going to do just fine. I'm sure of it.)

user434058
2:20 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh yes! I mean the guy and girl in your drawing are not as good, but I only want to draw simple regular stuff like polygons, arrows, etc. And really TikZ is way better when it comes to accuracy, but is all the hard work worth it? I am personally a fan of TikZ, but I get easily sidetracked when trying to draw something using TikZ....

@FakeMod I personally find using tikz a lot more satisfying than external graphics, but I agree it's probably more time-consuming.
I like the philosophy of producing everything inside TeX itself

user434058
@Danu So I don't have any really big time issues or deadlines, so I think I should keep on learning TikZ till the day I become (hopefully) proficient in it...

@barbarabeeton You could use the website editor

user434058
@Danu Exactly, the main thing which attracted me was the power and flexibility offered by an integrated figure designer like TikZ.

@JosephWright the github new user registration form hangs on @barbarabeeton's (not new but not positively ancient) bowser/OS not sure why. I believe a new machine was planned....

2:24 PM
Also, I have some anecdotal evidence that the people who are willing to put in serious effort to create beautiful pictures (one cannot avoid this, even when sidestepping TikZ) are also usually the ones who like TikZ, and that those who say it's definitely not worth it usually produce pictures of lesser aesthetic qualities.

@DavidCarlisle Probably that can be handled ...

@JosephWright (and @DavidCarlisle) -- After I get through some TUGboat work, I'll be in touch by email.

user434058
@Danu well I would learn TikZ rather than compromising with something as significant as overall quality!!

user434058
BTW ,Thanks for your help @DavidCarlisle and @Danu.

@FakeMod At work, sometimes people laboriously re-create my TikZ drawings in Visio because they were famous among customers we learned later.

2:28 PM
@StefanKottwitz Oh wow!

@JosephWright Just detailed network drawings that I did years ago, and customers loved to work with it and requested this year for new projects and my coworkers just got my LaTeX code and the PDF >:-)

user434058
@StefanKottwitz I rather love to recreate stuff in TikZ, because it's harder and thus it feels like an adventure and you also end up learning something new!!

@StefanKottwitz I remember, they were impressive

user434058
What is the best package for drawing basic 3d stuff? I have read on this site that Asymptote and PSTricks are favourable options but do you get the same 3d drawing power with TiiZ?

user434058
I am less willing to learn a whole new syntax for just 3d stuff, but if I need to then I will.

2:34 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Try listening to some Bach. (If you like that.)

@FakeMod you wouldn't want to draw @StefanKottwitz's network diagrams by hand. @JosephWright is that UKTUG presentation still live?

user434058
Try listening to Joep Beving!

user434058
@DavidCarlisle I am sorry, I haven't seen them so I don't know whether I would or not.

@DavidCarlisle @FakeMod tex.world/industry.pdf slide 50 onwards

@DavidCarlisle That one was 'restricted' as @StefanKottwitz was talking about work-related material

2:40 PM
@JosephWright ah but Stefan's just released something releasable I see:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yay!

@StefanKottwitz I like the slide explaining how not to upset your boss when they ask for the source

@StefanKottwitz Blog post somewhere on this?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Yay, yay, YAY!!!!!

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz You remind me I'm supposed to be getting that TUGboat sorted ...

2:49 PM
@JosephWright well, we wanted to write it together, and I haven't even started on anything yet...

@JosephWright I did not write a blog post, as coworkers or clients could see it easily, and though I anonymized data, someone may not like it to see it on the Internet. Happy to show and to share if not too public.

@StefanKottwitz Ah, OK
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Exactly ... got distracted

3:00 PM
@FakeMod From my understanding TikZ has much more limited 3d capabilities than PSTricks or Asymptote. So it might depend on your actual needs. Maybe @HenriMenke might be able to comment further.

3:27 PM
@mickep Maybe I can be a bit wrong... but it's very similar to the original.
In the meantime, good evening, everyone.

@Sebastiano Well, similar, indeed.

@DavidCarlisle David, in the meantime I apologize, but of course I hope you'll accept my affirmation as a joke. I didn't take the goniometer :-) But how did you understand the rotation?
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Best wishes for your finish line with lots of happiness for you and your loved ones and friends. But you're a student but you're very good at LaTeX. I sincerely congratulate you for everything and may life give you emotions and successes.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz It is obviously a sincere and heartfelt tribute.

3:47 PM
@UlrikeFischer thanks!! What should I change?

@manooooh I showed the changes.

@Sebastiano what rotation? I have no idea what you are referring to, sorry.

4:10 PM
@UlrikeFischer fixed. Thank you!! Now I see the importance of the % at the end of a line

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Congratulations from Overleaf folks! :)

2 hours later…
5:46 PM
Somebody wanna see how ugly maths typeset with LaTeX can get?
@PhelypeOleinik 24 new emails in my Github-address... What do you say in your defence?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Subscription to GitHub e-mails are voluntary ;-)

@PhelypeOleinik good defensive strategy, blaming someone else. A very popular one as well.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- @DavidCarlisle says I learn fast
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Though I thought it would be better to have 24 e-mails (I didn't count) in one go than 24 scattered throughout the day

@PhelypeOleinik actually its 23, one is from something else.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Not My Fault™

Another palindrome. In fact, only silver isn't a palindrome. (But getting there.)

@Sebastiano thanks. It all went well I guess. Only my report looks ugly (but that's because I have to mimic some MS Wort template with LaTeX)
Ugly maths:

yo'
6:11 PM
@barbarabeeton if I had a way to give you two silvers for free, I would do it, just for the fun of it :)

@yo' -- That's very nice. Thank you!

yo'
@barbarabeeton how are you coping?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Is this LaTeX? It looks weird.

@FaheemMitha yes it is. I think I've done a pretty good job looking as awful as Word.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz If that was your aim, then, yes you have.
Though I don't understand why you would want to.

6:20 PM
@FaheemMitha as I said earlier, I had to mimic a Word template or else my professor wouldn't let me write in LaTeX.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz It's a strange world.

@FaheemMitha obviously not for the looks :P
@FaheemMitha indeed it is.
@FaheemMitha and I only spend 5359 lines of TeX code in classes and package to achieve this...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Only?

(well that includes tests, documentation and presentations)
@FaheemMitha oh, no, I forgot to also count .cls and .sty files. Actually its 11601 lines of code.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz You should create a LaTeX class for this thing. Call it Bizarro, perhaps.

6:23 PM
@FaheemMitha There are 3 classes, MRTthesis, MRTalone and MRTbeam.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz That's a lot of lines.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz MRT?

@FaheemMitha the institute at which I wrote my bachelor's and master's thesis.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Oh. So, the people making these decisions are a bit crazy, I take it.

@FaheemMitha chair for Measurement and Control Engineering.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Oh.
Speaking of strange things, Amazon India is currently not delivering books.

6:25 PM
@FaheemMitha they don't like LaTeX and the professor wanted his Word template to be "space efficient"... That's what you get for choosing Word and trying to make things space efficient instead of appealing.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Space efficient? I thought I'd heard everything.

(and non-serif maths, this costed me some nerves to get wrong correctly, still bold Greeks are not supported)

Well, at any rate, it must have been an interesting exercise. Now you have some idea how Frankenstein must have felt.

@FaheemMitha a text sample with headings ^^^^

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz The math looks worse.
But that's only to be expected.

6:30 PM
@FaheemMitha it looks terrible. But that's not my fault. I only regret the choice of my interests for never being able to publish a scientific report which looks good (my dissertation will look just as awful, but will be created using MS Word, I fear).

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz That's rather unfortunate. My sympathies.

@FaheemMitha Even worse, everything I write for my day-job for the next 3 years will be created with Word or Powerpoint I'm afraid. I have to find some LaTeX project for some good typography (I started on a Final Fantasy 7 guide recently which doesn't look too bad, imho, and I have an article for TUGboat I want to write with @JosephWright so those keep my TeX-heart running)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz How painful. I feel for you. What is your area, again?

@FaheemMitha electrical engineering, my PhD will be about energy harvesting.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Energy harvesting from what?
And why do electrical engineers hate typography?

6:36 PM
@FaheemMitha vibrations (mostly), the application should be wire-less sensor networks. I'll see how well this turns out.

Energy harvesting from vibrations?

@FaheemMitha oh, we don't. It just so happens that my Professor had some bad experience with some editors and therefore prefers Word.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Love the term "Energy harvesting". It's really "energy stealing from unsupecting sources ;-)" but when I told that to people in my univeristy that are working on this they looked at me quite badly...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz You should talk to him. Why would anyone prefer ugly typography to beautiful typography? It's weird.

@FaheemMitha yes, you try to convert vibrations to electrical energy and store that in a capacitor to power a sensor or funk communicator.

6:38 PM
@yo' -- Coping reasonably well, actually, though not getting enough exercise. (I miss my tai chi class!) Several of our favorite restaurants have adapted to takeout, so our diet is able to be nicely varied. (Red curry chicken soup and chinese broccoli with ginger and garlic last night.) And TUGboat stuff to edit. How are things with you?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz funk communicator?

@FaheemMitha Because he's now used to work in Word and wants his whole team to work in the same software. I had an hour's worth of a talk to him about it back when I wrote my Bachelor's.
@FaheemMitha radio.

@barbarabeeton Are your local food shops still open? And is New England shut down, then?
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz It's generally hard to change people's minds. Particularly as they get older.

@Rmano well, some energy isn't stolen but just excess energy emitted to the surroundings. I don't steal the printer energy when I convert the vibrations it emits into the table.

I imagine takeout over there must be expensive.

6:41 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Same here: it's all Word

yo'
@barbarabeeton well, Overleaf is remote first and the traffic for Overleaf is somewhat increased, so I'm working, and besides that I'm doing the church music (yesterday it was pre-recorded as I didn't feel 100% Saturday night and I didn't want to risk infecting the minister). I also still have to manage the scouts (the fact that the children don't meet doesn't mean the managers have holidays), so things keep me pretty busy. I am coping well, my family is coping reasonably well too.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ;-) well, if the table liked the vibrations... ;-) --- I'm joking, yes. But there are Energy harvesting thing (like the thingies that "harvest" energy by the WiFi waves) that really are stealing it...

@Rmano I'm concentrating on real harvesting, particularly in vibrations which are (almost) always excess.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Maybe the department chair will retire before your dissertation has to be put in final form?

@Rmano absorbing wifi-signals is clearly stealing.
@barbarabeeton I'm afraid not... I was thinking whether I should edit it in LaTeX with a self-chosen formatting and only copy the results every once in a while, but I guess that's just doubled work (though I'd like to see a visually appealing variant of my work)

6:44 PM
@Rmano Depends whether the energy is going to waste or not.
Of course, perhaps a better approach is to make things more energy efficient in the first place.

@FaheemMitha vibrations (almost) always go to waste, so harvesting them is fine.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I see.

@FaheemMitha believe me, you have to if you want to power something by an energy harvester. In general the usable power and energy is so low that you have to be really efficient to do anything useful with it.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Every time my husband spots a woman with a pony tail jogging or running, he suggests that it's a great waste that the motion can't be harvested. (This is actually a fairly frequent sight in our neighborhood, or was, before the quarantine.)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I was talking about the thing throwing off the excess energy, to be clear.

6:47 PM
@FaheemMitha how do you make a machine with moving parts not emit vibrations?

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Get a really good machinist? :-)

@FaheemMitha impossible. You'd have to symmetrically move something else to compensate the vibration, making the thing less efficient as you have to move more mass.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'll take your word for it.

@FaheemMitha -- Southern New England is shut down, except for essential services, and food is considered essential. Restaurants can remain open, but can only serve for takeout. Some restaurants have closed because there isn't enough traffic; more discouraging is the fact that some of the closures are permanent.

@FaheemMitha just take a look at combustion engines. They have counter weights to reduce vibrations, but they can't completely compensate it either.

6:50 PM
@barbarabeeton Permanent? Yikes. But grocery stores are open, right?
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Ok. My knowledge of such things is very sketchy.

@barbarabeeton in my neighbourhood restaurants are allowed to serve until 15 o'clock. After 3pm only takeaway or delivery service. And some delivery services don't accept cash.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Consider this ... When you've produced your dissertation, and it's worth being published, you can prepare a beautiful version in LaTeX for public view. Double work, perhaps, but worth it, I think.

Finally, the private labs are starting tests. Better late than never, I suppose.

@barbarabeeton that's a good idea. Though I'd curse Word for being the mess it is in the process twice a day (every time I have to work in it I curse it)

Sort of talking to myself here. About Bombay. Things are quite tense here.
I keep reading these reports predicting Armageddon, Indian style. It's not good for my nerves.

6:55 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes, I know. Just joking. Damping vibration and obtaining energy is mostly nice. I've seen very nice idea for implantable electronic devices, too. @Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz

@FaheemMitha I have no idea how bad the situation is in Germany, tbh. I was in full-work mode the last month. For me it was just "Oh, so quiet in the university. Great, now I can work better".

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I think Germany has things under control, more or less. Then again, it's Germany.

@Rmano not on the implantable side, though. My institute has close to no experience with those.

I mean, if Germany can't handle it, then who can?
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz It's nice to be able to focus to well. Not something I've ever been good at.

@FaheemMitha the German parliament isn't known for its quick decision making...

6:58 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Not even in emergencies?

@FaheemMitha It wasn't particularly fast. The majority of our neighbouring countries closed borders earlier than we did, for example.

According to worldometers.info/coronavirus, you have just under 64k cases currently.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Oh.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- In Rhode Island, no gatherings of more than 5 people, and then, preferably people who live together anyhow, and even so, in a restaurant they would have to be spaced 6 ft (2 meters) apart, so no regular service, only takeout. Until April 30, as of the current regulations.

Things are getting pretty crazy over here. I'd much prefer to be in Germany right now.

@FaheemMitha I don't really trust the numbers there. RKI (Robert-Koch-Institut) has 57.298 (at 00:00 today) cases listed.

7:01 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Ok.

@FaheemMitha I guess the numbers on wordlometers are on the "safe" site, meaning they rather list too many than too few.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Your vocabulary must be becoming more elaborate.

@barbarabeeton nah, my cursing vocabulary shouldn't get any bigger. I have kids, you know.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz -- Then you should probably adopt the Winnie-the-Pooh retort, "Oh, bother!"

I'm off in one of my favourite video games of all times. Have to relax a bit after today. Tomorrow I'll start working on automagically creating expandable key-value taking arguments.
@barbarabeeton I'll stick with the Simpsons: Doh.

7:12 PM
@PhelypeOleinik ooh master rabbit

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz They must be getting their data from somewhere.

News from the U. of Pennsylvania: The Penn Libraries now offer institutional access to Overleaf, the online collaborative LaTeX editing platform. All Penn faculty, staff and students may now set up free Professional accounts, or link to existing personal Overleaf accounts.

@AlanMunn But you're at Michigan?

@FaheemMitha I'm in Michigan. I'm at Michigan State. But news is news. :)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz oh my, sans
@AlanMunn ooh news

7:15 PM
@PauloCereda the lot of it. I can't see helvet anymore.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I almost had a heart attack when I got in the verge of being forced to using sans for my thesis.
But in the end, love prevailed and I could use my beautiful Lucida. <3

@PauloCereda Sans serif? More like sans goût.

@AlanMunn insosso sorry, insípido. :)

@AlanMunn Ok.
@PauloCereda I hear Love makes the world go around.
Or possibly angular momentum.

@FaheemMitha Yes, crazy little thing called love. :)

7:41 PM
@PauloCereda Good Song!

@barbarabeeton ooooooh <3

8:11 PM
How to make cold brew coffee:

1. Make hot coffee
2. Forget it exists
3. Drink cold coffee
ooh :)

8:23 PM
@UlrikeFischer Cadorna Station ^^^
@PauloCereda ^^^

@CarLaTeX oooooh ;-)

8:40 PM
@PauloCereda Happens every other day ...
@CarLaTeX lovely!!!

@JosephWright , hello. I am trying to use \ior_shell_open:Nn\g_mystream_ior{base64 myfile.bin}. (I want to line-wise read-in base64-encoded binary files.) It works with lualatex but not with latex where it hangs. I know, it is beta, but it would be great if it worked with non-lua engines too.

9:05 PM
@AlexG For me with \ior_shell_open:Nn \g_mystream_ior { base64~test.bin } it doesn't hang, but it typesets base64 test.bin... I'll check

9:21 PM
@PhelypeOleinik I'll check too, but tomorrow. It is late now.

Does anyone here use Vim?
I'm trying to get nested syntax highlighting for Lua, but it doesn't work.
syn include @luaSyn syntax/lua.vim
unlet b:current_syntax
syn region luaZone matchgroup=texBeginEnd
                   \ start='\\begin{luacode\*\{,1}}'
                   \ end='\\end{luacode\*\{,1}}' keepend
                   \ contains=@luaSyn,@NoSpell
let b:current_syntax = 'tex'
I added this to after/syntax/tex.vim and there are no errors when opening a TeX file, but also nothing is happening.

@AlexG I think I spotted the problem. The non-LuaTeX code seems to do \openin""|shell command"", with two quotes rather than one, so the command doesn't get executed (and is typeset). Then if you use \read from that stream TeX will wait for input from the terminal
@AlexG Good night!

9:44 PM
@yo' somehow this message slipped through. Thank you very much and greetings!

10:35 PM
@HenriMenke You have to unlet b:current_syntax before including syntax/lua.vim. If you switch the first two lines, it works. The reason is that lua.vim, like most syntax files, terminates directly if b:current_syntax is already set.

@MarcelKrüger Cheers mate!

10:50 PM
@MarcelKrüger Now I only have to find out how to do the same thing for MetaPost without falling into infinite recursion, because mp.vim loads tex.vim.

11:09 PM
@norbert :)
@CarLaTeX ooh
