Pushed an update to expkv-def with a new key type data. A data key's macro behaves like \@secondoftwo if unused and if used will be \long\def<cs>#1#2{#1{<val>}}.
I have another idea for a package in the expkv family. expkv-cs to define expandable key-val taking macros with up to 9 keys (that's not much, but more isn't possible to grab in one step and hence if a user needs more keys, he has to define the grabbing logic himself).
@JosephWright but expkv-cs will take too long, that one won't make it anyway. And as long as he at least has expkv-def v0.1a and not v0.1 on the DVD (the bugfix was published a month ago, so nothing to worry there) it should be fine. Only one keytype will not be available.
Does anyone here have recommendations for SIP clients that would run on Linux? Preferably Debian. But some of those have unofficial Debian repositories.
@JosephWright it works with pdflatex, lualatex and xelatex. I didn't try dvips yet, but should work too. It only need a luatex run to create the pax-file(s) with the annotations.
@DavidCarlisle well I have to use borders for the links to see if it works ;-). With colored links one would have to use the mouse to check the link all the time.
@DavidCarlisle yes, probably. But as it is only a day old and probably has still a number of bugs (I already found one in pax: if you clip an annotation in the middle, it errors ...)

Can this PI symbol be exactly reproduced in Latex? I have tried various math packages like newtx, newpx,stix etc etc, but their PI shape doesn't match with the one i have in the image.

@Sebastiano Word is irrelevant though: it just matters what font it is. But also it is of course the wrong question (almost always) people shouldn't be asking about individual fonts for individual letters
@Sebastiano probably a different font but even if they were identical the fact that you used Word is not relevant at all, it is just the font that matters.
Hi everybody, I've got a somewhat vague question: I've started using the externalize tikzlibrary (my document has 500+ knots in it), but have run into a strange error. After figuring out how to add orientations to my knots (cf. my previous TeX question), I couldn't compile my document any more.
By accident, I discovered that the problem is fixed by changing \tikzexternalize[prefix=figures/] to \tikzexternalize, i.e. allowing the TeXstudio to make the pictures in the main folder instead of a dedicated subfolder.
To me, this suggests that something is going wrong because some process is unable to retrieve some essential information from the subfolder (maybe because it is unaware of it to begin with)
Any clues on what could be going wrong?
To clarify: The failure to compile only occurs when using tikzexternalize (and, accordingly, the pdflatex -shell-escape document command)

Is it better to draw diagrams using TikZ (assuming that you know how to use it, which would require you to dedicate about 100 hours of "practice") and to draw your diagram you would need to write the code yourself (which again might take significant time for non trivial drawings) OR should you just use a WYSIWYG software for drawing and insert that drawing(in SVG format) to your LaTeX document?
@FakeMod that's like saying is it best to use a pencil or a paintbrush. It depends....
@FakeMod the closer the diagram is to text (eg line plots with lots of textual labels) the more you gain from doing it in tex, to get a consistent appearance, the closer the diagram is to a photograph or artwork, the more you gain from doing it in a visual tool.

@DavidCarlisle I mainly find myself stuck flipping through the pgfmanual and tweaking co-ordinates to get the right drawing whenever I use TikZ, and all this breaks the workflow and reduces the productivity. I assume a WYSIWYG would make it all faster.

@DavidCarlisle Oh yes! I mean the guy and girl in your drawing are not as good, but I only want to draw simple regular stuff like polygons, arrows, etc. And really TikZ is way better when it comes to accuracy, but is all the hard work worth it? I am personally a fan of TikZ, but I get easily sidetracked when trying to draw something using TikZ....
@FakeMod I personally find using tikz a lot more satisfying than external graphics, but I agree it's probably more time-consuming.

@Danu So I don't have any really big time issues or deadlines, so I think I should keep on learning TikZ till the day I become (hopefully) proficient in it...
@JosephWright the github new user registration form hangs on @barbarabeeton's (not new but not positively ancient) bowser/OS not sure why. I believe a new machine was planned....
Also, I have some anecdotal evidence that the people who are willing to put in serious effort to create beautiful pictures (one cannot avoid this, even when sidestepping TikZ) are also usually the ones who like TikZ, and that those who say it's definitely not worth it usually produce pictures of lesser aesthetic qualities.
@JosephWright Just detailed network drawings that I did years ago, and customers loved to work with it and requested this year for new projects and my coworkers just got my LaTeX code and the PDF >:-)

@StefanKottwitz I rather love to recreate stuff in TikZ, because it's harder and thus it feels like an adventure and you also end up learning something new!!
What is the best package for drawing basic 3d stuff? I have read on this site that Asymptote and PSTricks are favourable options but do you get the same 3d drawing power with TiiZ?

@FakeMod From my understanding TikZ has much more limited 3d capabilities than PSTricks or Asymptote. So it might depend on your actual needs. Maybe @HenriMenke might be able to comment further.

@FaheemMitha they don't like LaTeX and the professor wanted his Word template to be "space efficient"... That's what you get for choosing Word and trying to make things space efficient instead of appealing.
@FaheemMitha it looks terrible. But that's not my fault. I only regret the choice of my interests for never being able to publish a scientific report which looks good (my dissertation will look just as awful, but will be created using MS Word, I fear).

@yo' -- Coping reasonably well, actually, though not getting enough exercise. (I miss my tai chi class!) Several of our favorite restaurants have adapted to takeout, so our diet is able to be nicely varied. (Red curry chicken soup and chinese broccoli with ginger and garlic last night.) And TUGboat stuff to edit. How are things with you?

@Rmano well, some energy isn't stolen but just excess energy emitted to the surroundings. I don't steal the printer energy when I convert the vibrations it emits into the table.
@barbarabeeton well, Overleaf is remote first and the traffic for Overleaf is somewhat increased, so I'm working, and besides that I'm doing the church music (yesterday it was pre-recorded as I didn't feel 100% Saturday night and I didn't want to risk infecting the minister). I also still have to manage the scouts (the fact that the children don't meet doesn't mean the managers have holidays), so things keep me pretty busy. I am coping well, my family is coping reasonably well too.

@FaheemMitha believe me, you have to if you want to power something by an energy harvester. In general the usable power and energy is so low that you have to be really efficient to do anything useful with it.

@FaheemMitha impossible. You'd have to symmetrically move something else to compensate the vibration, making the thing less efficient as you have to move more mass.
@FaheemMitha -- Southern New England is shut down, except for essential services, and food is considered essential. Restaurants can remain open, but can only serve for takeout. Some restaurants have closed because there isn't enough traffic; more discouraging is the fact that some of the closures are permanent.
@barbarabeeton in my neighbourhood restaurants are allowed to serve until 15 o'clock. After 3pm only takeaway or delivery service. And some delivery services don't accept cash.

@JosephWright , hello. I am trying to use \ior_shell_open:Nn\g_mystream_ior{base64 myfile.bin}. (I want to line-wise read-in base64-encoded binary files.) It works with lualatex but not with latex where it hangs. I know, it is beta, but it would be great if it worked with non-lua engines too.

I added this to after/syntax/tex.vim and there are no errors when opening a TeX file, but also nothing is happening.
@AlexG I think I spotted the problem. The non-LuaTeX code seems to do \openin""|shell command"", with two quotes rather than one, so the command doesn't get executed (and is typeset). Then if you use \read from that stream TeX will wait for input from the terminal
@HenriMenke You have to unlet b:current_syntaxbefore including syntax/lua.vim. If you switch the first two lines, it works. The reason is that lua.vim, like most syntax files, terminates directly if b:current_syntax is already set.
