@DavidCarlisle Idem for pineapple pizza ^^^

3 hours later…
8:46 AM
@yo' LOL

1 hour later…
9:55 AM
@CarLaTeX What's the mood in Italy?

GitHub sorts my releases wrong. v0.5 is after v0.5a which was tagged later and is tagging a later commit. My local git tag shows the correct order :(

@FaheemMitha I think the situation is much more quiet than the media depicts it

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz oh no

@CarLaTeX Hmm. Still nervous here.

@FaheemMitha Where are you? (If I may ask)

10:01 AM
@CarLaTeX Oh, I thought you knew. Bombay, India.

@FaheemMitha If I can console you, they say the virus is less powerful in hot countries, we have it in the North but not in the South of Italy

@CarLaTeX 21 cases in Germany currently, none around me, afaik.

@CarLaTeX Quite calm here in Spain, although we are clearly on the rising side of the curve. My sensation is that Italy overreacted a bit.

@Rmano Yes, just a bit ahahah
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Good to know :)

@Rmano Fraunhofer sent around a note, staff that was in Italy or had contact with people who were in Italy should stay at home for 14 days.

10:17 AM
This all is crazy and ridiculous. (just my 2 cents) It's not COVID-19 that will bring down the society, it's the society's response.

@yo' yes, looks like it.

yo'
As one Czech bio-chemist put it: People, wash your hands, eat fruits, vegetables and legumes and do not let populists and media frighten you to death.
2

@CarLaTeX I see. Good to know. But aren't China and South Korea warm too?

@yo' exactly
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz 1 confirmed case in Brazil.
@yo' THIS
@yo' Mum: Don't worry, I can make chicken soup for us. :)

@FaheemMitha I think the Chinese area where the virus born is not, probably Corea is

10:30 AM
I can't publish expkv-def as long as the new update of expkv isn't deployed by TeXLive :(

yo'
If something stops me from coming to Germany in March and France + Britain in April, it's not the virus, it's my fear of some idiot putting me in quarantine, either abroad or after I get back home.

@yo' Correct!

@CarLaTeX South Korea?

@yo' same!

@FaheemMitha Yes, Korea

10:32 AM
@CarLaTeX Ok.

it's Corea in Italian

yo'
@CarLaTeX that's more likely a coincidence actually.

@CarLaTeX I see. I did not know that.

yo'
@PauloCereda well, you would get extended holidays abroad :-) (I hope you get a good travel insurance!)

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz and of them in my city! But happily the city isn't overacting, we have some reasonable people there ;-)

yo'
10:33 AM
@UlrikeFischer good for you.

@yo' I have been smartworking since Monday, not so bad (I'm not in quarantene)

@yo' got my usual insurance, let's hope I don't have to use it. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda yeah.

2 hours later…
yo'
12:51 PM
btw...

1:17 PM
@yo' source?

@yo' Thank you very much!
> *Death Rate = (number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus (%). This probability differs depending on the age group. The percentage shown below does NOT represent in any way the share of deaths by age group.

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz you're welcome

Seems a bit odd ^^^ If Death Rate = (number of deaths / number of cases), that means that it is the share of deaths by age group, is it not?

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz it's # dead in the age group / # infected in the age group

1:21 PM
@yo' aaahhhh, stupid misunderstanding of the English formulation :)

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz :)
I'm still uhappy about them using the word "probability". It's not probability as it's not a prediction. It's merely statistics.

@yo' correct :) Same goes for "probability that it's raining tomorrow" though, pretty common mistake.

yo'
But if their data is correct, this shows that all the hysteria is non-sense.

@yo' it often is with new viruses. People just want things to be dramatic, I guess.

yo'
(btw, I saw another nice post recently, in Czech though):
A pharmacist says: 10000 infected with coronavirus in the world and respirator masks are sold out. There's 30000000 HIV+, but condoms don't disappear from the shelves.

1:31 PM
@CarLaTeX the problem is you don't eat enough pineapple,
2

@yo' well, for HIV we have pretty advanced medication, if taken you don't need condoms to not infect others. There are even a small number of cases (2?) in which the patient was healed from HIV, iirc.

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz well, but the number is 3000 times higher, and nobody is panicking :)

@yo' but the numbers are that high since decades, it isn't something new. New is always worse!

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz yeah of course

2:12 PM
I have: \newenvironment{grammar}{\[\begin{array}{l@{::=}l@{\ }l}}{\end{array}\]}
then I use it like `\begin{grammar} list & empty or list, a \end{grammar}`
How can I insert empty lines in my grammar such that I do not get ::= in such empty lines?

3:09 PM
Found a solution, self-posted it: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/530260/…
Feel free to correct my answer if it's semantically wrong or something

3:25 PM
@yo' -- Unfortunately, both my husband's and my medical histories indicate that we need to watch the situation carefully. I've suffered several serious fevers, one nearly fatal (when it spiked to 42C, they put me literally on ice; I don't recommend it), and Gordon has come home from two New Year's trips to cold places in the last four years with pneumonia. Keeping fingers crossed.

@barbarabeeton Apparently we're in the worried minority.
Still no new cases in India, which is a bit hard to believe.

@ComFreek I left a comment, \multicolumn is the usual way (and can be used more selectively to remove some but bot all of the @{} material if needed.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton I fully understand that if you have a history of concerns, you are concerned again.
What I try to convey is that this is a concern only for some (quite limited) groups of people, mostly people for whom a simple flu is a concern as well.

Are such diseases a concern for people with a history of bronchial problems?

3:41 PM
@yo' -- Well, we got our flu shots ("high dose") early in the fall. Also pneumonia and shingles. But there's no vaccine yet for this; earliest realistic estimate is probably a year.

@barbarabeeton Though I doubt New England is realistically much at risk. Don't you have one of most highly developed network of hospitals in the world?

@FaheemMitha -- Unfortunately, yes. (This includes asthma and COPD.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton yeah. However, also the flu one is usually only a small number of flu genres that are supposed to be most active based on season and location.

@barbarabeeton Wonderful. Then I'm at risk too.
My issues is mostly allergic, I think.
And they are mostly quiescent, with occasional flareups.

@barbarabeeton Flu shots are good, I think. If you catch the flu and then gets exposed to the corona virus before you recovered, that is probably very bad news. Being over 65, I too have my flu shots in order, and this year I am doubly glad I do. (Got your mail btw, will reply.)

3:44 PM
The coronavirus won't get me, we ducks are very good at hiding. :)

@FaheemMitha -- Just because New England has good hospitals (at least in metropolitan areas) doesn't mean that readily communicable diseases can't get a foothold if people don't act sensibly.

@PauloCereda You could just fly away.
@barbarabeeton Agreed. But you're in a much better position than most places.

@FaheemMitha :)

Does anybody know why ngerman sets the sfcode of periods etc. to 1006 instead of 3000?

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz (non)frencspacing does this. (the 6 in the end is for backtracking of spaces, not for the spacefactor)

3:51 PM
@FaheemMitha -- In fact, we live about 600 meters from one of the better hospitals in the city, which was very convenient when I slipped on the ice and busted the top of a femur, resulting in a new hip for a Christmas present. But that's a lot different from being inflicted with a nasty germ. The quality of the chicken soup hasn't improved over the years.

@barbarabeeton Heh. If chicken soup is all we had to complain about our hospitals here, we'd be in clover.

@yo' I know. The question is why ngerman sets french spacing... :)

yo'
@barbarabeeton Mommy, why is the chicken soup best for dealing with sore throat? Well, Jimmy, because it's rich in antibiotics.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks! Receiving better answers is exactly what I intended with my initially self-answered question.

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz that's a matter of (historical) preference I think.
Also note that it was an American who called it French :-)

3:56 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz spaces frighten germans, and large space frighten them more?

@yo' -- But antibiotics don't have any effect on viruses. A nice aromatic broth does help clear the sinuses, and good chicken soup just makes one feel cared for. (Of course, wasabi also works on the sinuses, but isn't as comforting.)

@barbarabeeton duck soup is even better

@DavidCarlisle -- Only if it features the Marx brothers.

yo'
@barbarabeeton yeah, I know. (This is an old joke on the overuse of ATB in chicken "farms".)

@DavidCarlisle it is snowing, out balcon is already white ...

yo'
3:59 PM
however, in general, ATB can help as a person with a flu or other virus infection is weakened hence suspectible to bacterial infections as well. I know cases where the doctors prescribe ATB treatment if there's an extra risk of things going wrong.

@UlrikeFischer Do you think so? I like non-french spacing more.

@UlrikeFischer we had a small amount here this morning as well (all gone now though)

@UlrikeFischer uh-oh

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I was joking. Personally I don't care much about it - perhaps I would more if the command had a name I could remember. Everytime this is discussed I have to try out which does what. Why didn't they call it \extraperiodspace and \nonextraperiodspace?

@yo' -- And the overuse is one of the reasons that there are now so many super-staph bugs like MRSA. Thank goodness my bout of staph sepsis happened before toxic shock appeared. Even so, that year I missed spring in isolation/quarantine. (The ailment was later written up, by an apparent illiterate, as a "staff" infection. Well, maybe that was semi-accurate, given that I was also on display to several bunches of interns being introduced to unusual cases.)

4:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle bread is good

@UlrikeFischer -- Skiing this weekend?

yo'
@barbarabeeton yeah. But it's indeed the food production overuse mostly, seconded only by the unfinished ATB treatments (mostly in countries with bad access to medication)

4:21 PM
@barbarabeeton Personally, I like vegetable soup. I haven't tried chicken soup in a while.

@UlrikeFischer -- There's a pretty good account of the history of spacing in Wikipedia at History of sentence spacing. Apparently the term "French spacing" used to be used in the exact opposite sense as used by TeX. (Personally, I prefer the wider space at the end of sentences especially when the text contains lots of extra periods with abbreviations, which is true in a lot of academic texts.)
@FaheemMitha -- What's really important is a rich basic broth, not just watery liquid. For example, miso is (usually) great.

@barbarabeeton ooh I like miso
With tofu

@PauloCereda -- And kombu.

yo'
@barbarabeeton well, without any mushrooms please :)

@yo' -- Well, I do like mushrooms, but they're certainly not necessary.

4:30 PM
Great now I'm hungry and want Japanese food :(

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I had sushi for lunch today.

@yo' not a big sushi fan, like the hot stuff.

yo'
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz for me it's the other way around...

@barbarabeeton I've never tried miso.

4:45 PM
@FaheemMitha -- You should try it. Although the dashi that is often used in the base contains dried fish, everything else is veggie, and there are delicious vegan variants on dashi. I think it's yummy, but like almost everything, it's ultimately a matter of personal taste.
@yo' -- For our mardi gras celebration, we went out for omakase. Very satisfying.

@barbarabeeton It might be difficult to get the ingredients in India.

@FaheemMitha -- Is seaweed (various kinds) hard to get there? I expect that tofu should be available. (It's a common alternative here for paneer with saag.)

@barbarabeeton ooh nori?

@PauloCereda -- Among others. Good stuff, all!

5:13 PM
@barbarabeeton Tofu is available. I don't know about seaweed. I assume these are special kinds of seaweed, not just any ordinary seaweed.
I've never really tried Japanese food. And though India has many culinary traditions, I don't think any of them are particularly close to Japanese cuisine.

@FaheemMitha -- Kelp or kombu is a basic ingredient in the miso broth. If kelp isn't available, then making miso would be very difficult, if not impossible. Other seaweeds can probably be more easily substituted. If you do visit someplace where Japanese food is available, try it!

@barbarabeeton Ok, I will.

6:04 PM
The \phantom command isn't working inside the argument to the \begin{letter} command. I.e. the to address. I'm guessing this is because I'm trying to use a box inside a box. Is there an anternative for leaving space equivalent to a certain piece of text?
Never mind. Maybe it works after all. I think I was missing a \\.

6:19 PM
@JosephWright, @UlrikeFischer and @DavidCarlisle is it possible to install a single file for l3build check in the test directory? If I currently use something like checkdeps = {"../expkv/build/unpacked/expkv.tex"} I get "not a directory".
And doing checkdeps = {"../expkv/"} seems to not work, as the latest local version of expkv is still not used :(

1 hour later…
7:33 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz not sure I understand, you mean to copy it from the build area in another repository? Not sure that's really supported but if that is what you want you could always call cp to move the file in checkinit_hook

@DavidCarlisle I decided to just put the one missing definition in the preamble in a way that'll throw an unpassed-check error once the update is deployed. This way I can write my checks and only have to make a small adjustment once they become invalid.

7:58 PM
uploaded to CTAN
Those poor guys get much traffic by me these last couple of days. How much worse must the oberdiek splitting have been...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz not to mention 2020-02-02, PL1, 2, 3, 4 [5]...

@DavidCarlisle most embarrassing was when I uploaded a package and resubmitted it only 2 minutes later (I forgot l3build tag)...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz actually they were very much in favour of splittting that

@DavidCarlisle oh, really? I thought they'd get much more small packages causing more work load. Maybe wrong assumptions on my end.

@DavidCarlisle as Karl commented a few days ago: "Anyway, I think all the latex fmts will get rebuilt again tonight. (And most nights, these days. :))"

8:10 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz no same issue as maintence at our end, you need to change a comma in the doc for atbegshi and you have to rebuild everything so then they had to update everything run consistency checks on all the files, work out (if i didn't explictly say) how may of the 100 packages had changed dates so needed update catalogue entries etc. Now we can make an update to luacolor, test it package it and submit it and them update the ctan catalog in a few minutes

@DavidCarlisle and resubmit it ;-)

@UlrikeFischer resubmitting the old oberdiek bundle really would be a pain:-)

@DavidCarlisle yes, it is really much more confortable this way (but I didn't catch up yet with all the repositories, I think I have only a small fraction already locally).

@UlrikeFischer I can blame you for any errors in the ones you don't have.
although I blame @PauloCereda for this

Q: Catching Pokemon with TikZ ... and why ducks matter

FHZA very creative professor once draw this picture while teaching about horizontal throw which source is this video. Once I saw it I tried to reproduce the draw as can be seen on my own, not very elegant, answer below. My first attempt is indeed incredible ugly. I clearly don't have much skill...

@DavidCarlisle seems reasonable!
@DavidCarlisle thanks for sharing, I love it!
Is there a macro which I don't know for \overset{!}{=}?

8:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle the duck should have glasses to protect the eyes.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz why not \stackrel ?

@DavidCarlisle because my brain doesn't work anymore...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz well overset is OK but stackrel is simpler for simple cases. I thought there was a unicode but apparently not

8:44 PM
@UlrikeFischer did you see the miktex question in fontspec issue, how do you get miktex to rebuild the formats? (I'm assuming that is the issue)

@DavidCarlisle no I just starting to make dinner. Where is it?

@DavidCarlisle I have time now, it is in the oven.

@UlrikeFischer roast duck?

@DavidCarlisle cordon bleu with pommes (the pommes are in the oven).

8:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle no, it's just late and I have to get my thesis done by the end of March, so I'm a bit exhausted. And to get a compensation for my studies I write LaTeX packages, which isn't really that refreshing either. Perhaps I should just get some sleep now :)

9:21 PM
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz No, it's expecting a target build.lua file to be there
