I came to announce that I have installed TL2012!

@JasperLoy Yay! :)

4 hours later…
5:32 AM
If you click "show all N" just above the list of starred messages, you can choose "by me", which will show you the messages that you have starred.

Don't know if it's possible to find your messages that have been starred by others though, except for looking through the entire list ...

Any physicists about?

@JosephWright What's a physicist?

I have a quick "upgrading to tl12" question: Do I need to do anything special to avoid duplicating all the packages I already have installed under tl11?

@Seamus If you have space on your disk, just install TL 2012 and keep the old one. You can get rid of it by simply removing the 2011 directory.

@egreg Thanks. I thought there might be a more sophisticated way to do things.

@Seamus There is an upgrade procedure, but it's not recommended. Conversely, keeping the old one can save your life if something goes wrong with the new release.

10:37 AM
I like quantum physics. We can be completely right and totally wrong at the very same time. :)
4

@PauloCereda Unfortunately for my students I don't teach quantum linear algebra.

@egreg Uh-oh. :) They would benefit a lot from the quantum part. :P

@PauloCereda Where a linear system can have solutions or not at the same time?

@egreg Oh. :) Somewhere in the multiverse, perhaps? :P
Which reminds me of this:

11:07 AM
It's been a while since our last interview. We could interview David again. :)

1 hour later…

12:39 PM
@JosephWright I don't know any physics, but now I'm curious why you asked that.

@JasperLoy No, not physics, physicists :-)
I'm (finally) working on physics biblatex styles and need some info

user19161
@JosephWright LOL

1:36 PM
@AlanMunn: Do you think I should go with AppleCare too?

@PauloCereda I always do for laptops and I would also for an iMac, since they are a pain to work on.

@AlanMunn Thanks. I'm still unsure if I should include it, as the "bill" is quite heavy. :)

1:52 PM
@PauloCereda I did on my laptop as they gave me academic discount which I'd not expected, so it was effectively free. Turned out to be handy as I had to have a new battery and they did it for nothing

@JosephWright I'd like the academic discount, but sadly I have no official link with the university anymore. :( I'm eager to pay cash, since they give me 10% discount, which is very good. AppleCare will cost me around 180.36 euros. :(

@PauloCereda That's quite a bit more than I paid (75 GBP)

@JosephWright I suspected that. :( Welcome to Brazil, where taxes eat you alive. :(

@PauloCereda What's your sales tax rate then?

@JosephWright That's the problem. :)
While there is no sales tax per se in Brazil, every manufacturer, distributor, retailer or provider of almost every type of merchandise or service pays the state ICMS and passes the cost along to the consumer.
ICMS: Impostos Sobre Circulação de Mercadorias e Prestação de Serviços - Taxes on Goods and Services.

2:00 PM
@PauloCereda Ah right. So what's the rate for 'ICMS'?

@JosephWright São Paulo: 18%
Asking my dad via AIM for more explanations, hold on. :P

@PauloCereda VAT here is 20% :-)

Total cost that is directly attributable to the ICMS: computer 38.00%
We also have other taxes together, like IPI.
The Brazilian economy is insanely complex. :( The cheapest car you can buy here is not available for less than 12,000 euros.
Does anybody have a basement for rent in Europe? :)

We have basement that we are renting out
@PauloCereda Are you traveling to europe ? =)

@N3buchadnezzar It might take a while. :) Airline tickets are also expensive. :D

Q: Sword, pizza and watermelon

Adi DaniSuppose that we have a sword and cut a pizza and watermelon. What is the maximum number of pieces of pizza or watermelon obtained after 10 cuts. Is there a general formula

Random titles FTW. :)

3:24 PM
Apple Geniuses. :P
Disclaimer: that's gimp'ed. :)

4:04 PM
@PauloCereda Gimped as in manipulated, or saved using the gimp ?

@N3buchadnezzar Manipulated. :)

4:20 PM
@PauloCereda =)

4:48 PM
@PauloCereda Am I right in thinking that ICMS is charged on the total value (goods+tax)? I.e. If the base price is 82, you pay 100, rather than paying 118 for a base price of 100?
That is, in "real" taxation, ICMS at 18% is equivalent to VAT at ~21.95%?

@BrentLongborough Let me call my dad again. :) I'm terrible at financial calculation. :P

@PauloCereda Ahh, you young people are losing the Brazilian tradition of financial acuity. That's because you don't have inflation any more. Now, I remember the month when inflation reached 80% (for the month) under Fernando Collor. I guess you weren't even born then... :)
Well, very tiny (March 1990)

@BrentLongborough It seems so. :)
@BrentLongborough I remember Collor's impeachment two years later. :P

@PauloCereda Yes, I always thought that was a real con job, 22% tax masked as 18%

@BrentLongborough "explicar isso é muito complicado." - my dad :P

5:00 PM
@PauloCereda Não é não, é só dizer que o imposto é "por dentro"... LOL

@BrentLongborough There are other taxes too, like IPI. At the end of the day, more than half of the "final" price is due to taxes. :)
@BrentLongborough LOL
Dad is an accountant, so his explanations are usually highly technical and boring. :P

If I remember correctly, income tax wasn't too bad, but the sales and importation taxes are awful, and recessive. I especially hated the special taxes on electronic stuff, including things like MRI scanners.
@PauloCereda Money is almost never boring -- Brent's law of accountancy.
2

@BrentLongborough I bought a binary watch (geek alert) and when I saw the taxes, my eyes almost popped. :)

Anyone know anyone who's got a working microtype protrusion table for Minion Pro?

@BrentLongborough LOL I'm telling my dad to put your law as his MSN status. :D

5:07 PM
@PauloCereda Binary watch? Is that one where you ask it "Is it time yet?" and it either says yes or no?

@BrentLongborough LOL looks like a Prolog watch. :P

@PauloCereda A Haskell watch might be better -- always tells the same time.

I'll take a picture. :)
@BrentLongborough ooh a watch monad. :D

@BrentLongborough but that's not side-effect free, is it?

@PatrickGundlach It is if it always shows the same time.

5:10 PM
I've got a new browser start page: "The Ultimate Productivity Blog": productiveblog.tumblr.com

Assuming you limit the definition of side effects to exclude people getting annoyed or having heart attacks.

@BrentLongborough But "showing" is a side effect :)

@PatrickGundlach Ah, you mean the "Schrödinger" Haskell Compiler!

@BrentLongborough :)

@BrentLongborough The Prolog watch will also say no if you didn't formulate the question in exactly the right way :)

5:13 PM
@PatrickGundlach LOL, how true...

Sorry for the poor quality. :)

@PauloCereda Did you take that with a phone, or with an electric typewriter?

First row: 2
Second row: 8 and 1
2:09 :D
@BrentLongborough With a Sony Cybershot. :P The typewriter would be a wiser choice. :)

@PauloCereda That is soooo g33ky. Me, I'd sooner poke a finger in my eye :) (But it's only inveja)
@PauloCereda Ah, that explains everything.

@BrentLongborough <3
Besides, I don't know why Sony WRITES ALL FILES IN UPPERCASE, INCLUDING THE FILE EXTENSIONS. WHAT EXTENSION IS .JPG? :)
@StephanLehmke LOL

5:21 PM
@PauloCereda It's funny, almost all companies where the software isn't the principal thing seem to give the development to their office cleaners.

@BrentLongborough :)

5:59 PM
Hey! I didn't notice but Martin Scharrer has 80k+ and lockstep has overtaken Herbert!

6:56 PM
@egreg Yay!

1 hour later…
8:15 PM

2 hours later…
10:02 PM
@N3buchadnezzar Why Ireland? It should be Czechia :)

I like Russia best =)

Yeah, but actually, all of them are sort of true

The Norse do not have Viking helmets =(

@N3buchadnezzar And France is missing there: three people staying at a place and a large "GR\`EVE" sign over them

10:39 PM
Typical stereotype: Brazilians and football. :) We don't have footballs near us every time.
