(I've been asked not to state anything definitive until the contract is signed, but I think I won't get in too much trouble if I say it will be between July 20 and August 1. Is that close enough? I'll check again though.)

@FaheemMitha In our city we have around 210 polling stations. In every station there are normally at least four people. That is quite a number, and I didn't mentioned yet the people needed to collect the results, put them into the system etc. So we have volunteers too (I was one of them for a number of times - I can only recommend to do it. You learn a bit about democracy and how voting works).

@UlrikeFischer Absolutely. And you don't want the government to run the polling stations. We the people should keep an eye on things to make sure everything is above board.

@UlrikeFischer -- In Rhode Island, eligible voters are called up to serve as poll workers. I'm not sure how they are chosen, but Gordon and I were poll workers for about ten years. The precincts we worked in had 3,000 - 4,000 eligible voters each. Some of the workers check the status of voter eligibility, whether they're at the correct location, etc. One worker is responsible for managing the ballots and other papers, and there's one more in charge of the whole operation.

Poll workers are paid, but less than "minimum wage". It's a long day, and poll workers can't leave the premises even to have lunch until the polls close. Rhode Island ballots are counted electronically, but there's a paper backup (thankfully!). Different states have different procedures. As @UlrikeFischer says, working at this is a good way to learn about democracy.

@DavidCarlisle The oberdiek bundle split has led to complete chaos in TeX Live. People trying to maintain a minimal installation are completely hosed. When I say tlmgr install kvoptions, it really only installs kvoptions itself and none of the dependencies because the corresponding build file is just empty.

I have to study every package I include in my document carefully for all its dependencies and their respective dependencies.

How is this supposed to be maintainable?

@HenriMenke but this not different to other packages. If you do install chessboard you don't get all the dependencies either.
