@RyanReich Hi Ryan, thanks for the answer, but I'm really looking for a concrete example where having \makeatother would screw up another package. I tried to create such an example and failed.

Apparantly the number one use of wi-fi on board the plane is to go on facebook and post "I'm posting this from 35,000ft". I'm not going to stoop to such depths. Particularly not at 35000ft. (Given that I'm en route I don't know if I should write 35,000ft or 35.000ft).

@AndrewStacey LOL I think 35.000ft is totally out of the question; should be metres ;-)

@lockstep We should have a meta discussion, I guess, but the general feeling is they aren't real questions ('not constructive' or 'not a real question'), certainly if they are something beyond 'How do I patch package X to do Y?'
I've been back over the log from last night after I went to bed, and we are now down to 406 unanswered questions. Well done everyone.

Hey guys, TL2012 is out!
6

@JasperLoy To the blogs!

"Current release: TeX Live 2012 is available over the Internet and on DVD. It was released on 8 July 2012. "
@JasperLoy Arg, 2 min too late.
Not all mirrors have it yet, so installation might fail.

user19161
@MartinScharrer Oh, I only looked out because of your announcement earlier on that it would be out this weekend, so full credits go to you Dr Scharrer!

@JasperLoy No problem at all ;-)
The status of the CTAN mirrors is visible at dante.ctan.org/mirmon, just look for one close to you which got updated in the last few hours.

I just got -2 points for saying you should use math constructs rather than text in math:-) If people prefer superscripted hyphens to minus signs, who am I to argue:-)
@StephanLehmke \makeatsomething thanks

@DavidCarlisle I upvoted your answer to compensate :)

@DavidCarlisle Under normal setting, the + is taken from the normal text font. ;-)

@StephanLehmke yes odd sort of day today you upvte wrong answers and I get right answers downvoted

@DavidCarlisle No I meant the superscript one. Woudln't have looked round there otherwise.

@egreg yes I know that;s what the "looks right" means, but just because crazy code happens to pick up the right font in the standard cm setting doesn't mean it's right:-)
@StephanLehmke ah:-)

10:49 AM
No ISO yet. :(

Q: Passthrough TeX input

pmrI need to convert a document that was written in TeX to some other format. The other format supports a TeX style mathmode, so I would like to turn every mathmode formula into verbatim. I tried turning each formula into a verbatim environment, but this does not work, as an end statement has to b...

Q: Is this a bug of texstudio 2.3? Its view-pdf-internal does not display unicode characters correctly

racoonMy tex file contains some chinese characters. When I use xelatex to compile it, I get the satisfied pdf output which can be view with an external pdf reader such as Foxit reader. However, it can not be viewed with the internal pdf reader of texstudio itself. All chinese characters disappear. Ho...

Looks like a bug report in an editor: 'not constructive'?

@JosephWright I think so. :)

@JosephWright I didn't.

Q: Format Table of Contents

Filipe FerminianoI downloaded a Latex model to build my finishing degree course, but the summary came in a strange format, like in image, each section became a link with a red tectangle around it. I took a look at the code and didn't find out how to take it off this red rectangles. These are the packages in th...

@MarcoDaniel: yay, Marco is back! :)

@PauloCereda Finally ;-)

How many questions were answered yesterday ? =)

@PauloCereda Ah! A Higgs boson!

Hi
Is there any GUI for LaTeX ?

@HackToHell Do you mean something like Lyx?

@HackToHell Lyx (lyx.org) perhaps?

Can lyx do chem equations ?
that are quite complex, like benzene rings joined together and stuff

@HackToHell No

Is there any other GUI program that can do that
?

12:48 PM
@HackToHell That's a scheme, not an equation, and while there are LaTeX packages to do them (chemfig for example), I'd recommend using ChemDraw and saving as .eps or .pdf format (the latter is Mac-only for ChemDraw)
Writing a chemical structure editor is a serious job in its own right, so it's very unlikely to be added to a general editor

I want to ask a question in chemistry.se, that's why I wanted an LaTex gui ...
I can manage Maths stuff, but chemistry in latex is hard....

@HackToHell MathJax (which is what they use) is not LaTeX, it's an interpreter for a subset of math mode input
@HackToHell Use a proper editor, for example ChemDraw (paid-for) or Accelrys Draw (free to use I think)

So I can't do chem equations properly using MathJax, is there any other program that allows me create a image of an chemistry equation ?
@JosephWright Ah Thanks :)

@HackToHell If you want cross-platform, ChemDoodle is good, but again paid-for

Thanks guys :)

1:05 PM
@JosephWright: I have a curios error. After some weeks I compiled my mdframed.dtx and now I get the error: ! File ended while scanning use of \__prop_get_Nn:nwn. Do you know this problem?

@MarcoDaniel We've altered a few internals, but all of the test files pass so there should be no mismatches within our code. Example?

@JosephWright First I want to ask ;-) Now I must find my error. I think something with my cls file. I am searching. ;-)
@JosephWright Here an example:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{expl3}

\begin{document}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\prop_new:N \l_tempa_prop
\cs_set:Npn \SomeCommand #1
 {
  \prop_put:Nnn \l_tempa_prop { title } { #1 }
 }

\SomeCommand{foo}

\prop_get:Nn  \l_tempa_prop { title }
\ExplSyntaxOff

\end{document}

@MarcoDaniel OK, I'll investigate
@MarcoDaniel Problem identified: check in shortly

@JosephWright Thanks
@JosephWright Works now
@JosephWright: Did you change l3keys? I get the error:
    ! Undefined control sequence.
    <argument> \c_keys_code_root_tl

1:34 PM
@MarcoDaniel Is that with fontspec?

@JosephWright Yes

@MarcoDaniel Will has been naughty and used an internal variable. He'll update fontspec on CTAN once we update l3kernel (I hope!)

LaTeX3 is evil! ♥ :)

\cs_set_eq:NN \c_keys_code_root_tl \c__keys_code_root_tl
@PauloCereda It's all about trying to mark up what is internal

@JosephWright This works.

1:38 PM
@MarcoDaniel I'll prod Will soon: we expect to update CTAN probably next week

@JosephWright :)

The last question on the site reminds me "How do you fit four elephants in a Smart"?

@egreg LOL

@JosephWright The following line is also necessary. I read the announcement however some internal package or fontspec use \seq_length:N Whereby I though \seq_length:N will be available until the end of the year.
\cs_set_eq:NN \seq_length:N \seq_count:N

@MarcoDaniel That's odd: it should be there. I will check

1:41 PM
:)

@MarcoDaniel Ah, I see the issue

Two weeks without LaTeX and I missed a lot :-(

@MarcoDaniel Technically, the length functions were experimental and so could be removed without warning. I suspect the updated count ones will stay

@JosephWright First time here and I make trouble ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Better now than in say two weeks time!

2:00 PM
How does one typeset SyncTeX? Sync\TeX?

@PauloCereda I guess so.

@egreg Thanks. :) I'm not a documentation person, I'm still struggling to finish the arara manual. :)

2:47 PM
ReCaptcha 1:0 Paulo.
$\pi \lambda \eta \theta$ os I don't know how to add the accent. :(

@PauloCereda πλῆθος Just switch keyboard layouts.:)

@AlanMunn Wow. :)

@PauloCereda Trivial on a Mac; I don't know about Linux or Windoze.

@AlanMunn Soon. :) I'm planning to buy my Mac until the end of this month or probably August. :)

@PauloCereda s/until/by/

2:57 PM
@AlanMunn (with no offense) Someone said that as a native speaker, he can't distinguish what makes posts hard to read: For me, it's exactly spelling like "Windoze" ;)
(btw, I had not understood why the discussion often falls to the English language until 1 minute ago :D )

@tohecz I see your point, but hopefully you've seen that enough to get the joke. And how will you ever improve if we native speakers don't test your limits? :)

@AlanMunn Oops. :) Thanks. :) I can't edit anymore. Now I'm in the wall of shame. :P

@AlanMunn Yes, I get your point, but I prefer chats and "forum about nothing" for improving my less formal English

@AlanMunn I can write Win12. :D ba dum tss

I don't like when I have to bother with trying to understand English when the essence of the problem isn't the language but the contents

3:00 PM
I eat bread and cheese in the morning. < My first English sentence. :)

@PauloCereda cute :)

@tohecz :)

I don't remember mine tho, I was a 5-year-old pupil then

@tohecz Isn't this what this is? We seem to have a pretty wide range of topics here, sometimes purely technical, sometimes other stuff that interests us and sometimes pure silliness. I see the chat as a way to build more personal connections between the site users rather than an alternative way of learning more TeX (although sometimes it's that too.)

@AlanMunn I never write pure silliness in chat /ducks

3:03 PM
@AlanMunn That's what I tried to say: chat is ok for less formal English, the site itself not (IMO)

@egreg Me neither, but I hear such people exist.
@tohecz Ah, ok. I would tend to agree on that.

Nice name of a new user

@egreg Wow! :)
@AlanMunn Lookout of the Yard! :)

@PauloCereda I'm afraid I don't follow that at all. :)

@AlanMunn YAPM. :) It's a line from Monty Python's Agatha Christie Sketch (the video I posted). :)

3:12 PM
@PauloCereda Ha, caught you. My line was from the same sketch. :)

@AlanMunn Oh no! :D Damn, it was his answer to Carol. :P

3:26 PM
Can I say This rule maps the \hologo{pdfLaTeX} engine...?
I'm in doubt about the correct term.
I understood that pdfTeX is the engine, since pdfLaTeX uses it under the hood.

@PauloCereda You have to map something to something else generally, unless you're Mercator. But maybe that's not what you're asking. What's the whole sentence supposed to be?
@PauloCereda Assuming this is w.r.t arara, it's not clear that you should be talking about engines at all, but rather commands. (in which case it's just <code>pdflatex</code> not with the (annoying IMO) LaTeX logo.

@AlanMunn The whole sentence is: This rule maps \hologo{pdfLaTeX}, calling the |pdflatex| command with the proper parameters, when available. All parameters are optional.
@AlanMunn Ah I see. :) I thought of mentioning the engine. :)

I don't think engines should be your concern. As for "maps" you can't use it in that context. What's wrong with just "runs"?

@AlanMunn Really? I thought it was the correct term. The rule doesn't run the command, but "build" the command based on the directives. I'm probably biased because under the hood (in the implemntation level), a mapping happens. :)

@PatrickGundlach: I edited the section about eqnarray.

3:54 PM
@PauloCereda "maps" is technically the right term I agree, but then the syntax has to be "this maps X to Y" not "this maps X" So "runs" is a bit of a fib, that's true.

@AlanMunn Ah I see. :) I'll try to rephrase that section. It' very difficult to write a manual, I never thought it would be that hard. :) And I also have to rewrite some parts - thanks to your suggestions. :) The English language sometimes slaps me in the face. :)

4:34 PM
@tohecz Your answer is just the same as the one linked as duplicate.

I missed that, sorry.
(How could I even think that this question is not on TeX.SE?)

Is there a good reason not to make answers community wiki? The answer is detailed enough it might be slightly different for different RefTeX which I think would be better flagged in the answer rather than in comments. — tcaswell 20 mins ago
Anyone like to comment on the CW point?

@JosephWright Do you have a link to the related question please?

@tohecz Click "20 mins ago"

@TorbjørnT thx, another feature to rememebr

Q: Enable parentheses bib entry with RefTeX

Alfred M.I have built my .bib file using parentheses, like this: @ARTICLE(Campbell2006, author="Campbell, K. and McKay, M.D. and Williams, B.J.", title="Sensitivity Analysis when Model Outputs are Functions", journal="{Reliability Engineering \& System Safety}", volume=91, number="10-11", pages="1468...

@JosephWright thx
btw, what does the percentage in the CW answer author field means?

@tohecz It's a rough count (based on characters?) of how much that person contributed to the question, I think.

1 hour later…
5:55 PM
What is up with all the Monty references in chat lately? :p

6:16 PM
@MartinScharrer My first impression was that @JosephWright 's question primarily aims at questions that are "in essense" bug reports, well seems this impression was not correct. (Re: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/2622/… )

@N3buchadnezzar It's one of the hazards of interacting with nerd/geek types.

Please, what is the LaTeX's "shortcut" for 10000?
something like \@MM?

6:44 PM
@tohecz I'm happy to have answers on both areas: out-and-out bug reports and questions which it becomes apparent are bugs. There is also the 'I have noticed this, is it a bug' type of question

@JosephWright 'I have noticed this, is it a bug' is a NARQ as I said. Once the user is obviously aware it is a bug, he is not asking a question. When the user does not recognize it is a bug, it is a question
Large achievement: multi-page \twocolumn[...] article header producing no error mistakes and giving the proper output! (Is such thing worth an self-answered question?)

@tohecz Could you add that either to your existing answer or as a second one? I think it would be handy to have these things in meta

@JosephWright done

7:21 PM
@tohecz \@M; \@MM is 20000
@JosephWright I'd point to a typical "it's a bug, but OP couldn't know"

Q: Is it possible to have multiple paragraphs inside a multicolumn using xcolor or a replacement?

ikksI am getting information written by users in many lines, paragraphs, and I have to put those inside a table, I would like to know if it is possible to instruct LaTeX to accept paragraphs inside a column or maybe inside a multicolumn? If I try to process this \documentclass{article} \usepackage...

I believe it's very important to check the bug status after the fact
And it's one of the reasons why David is very active here, so it's a welcome bug. :)

7:38 PM
@egreg and can I say \vbadness\@M ?

@tohecz Yes, provided \makeatletter is in force.

@egreg It's in a .cls, so at-sytax-on. Thanks

7:57 PM
@tohecz It's only a temporary setting, I hope. :)

of course
I'm solving some issues with breaking \twocolumn[...] contents on multiple pages
and it seems it finally works

8:11 PM
I am back!

@N3buchadnezzar Andrew is in England, so you don't have to worry with pastry.

Oh, so nobody in chat wants any delicious carrot cake?

@N3buchadnezzar I had a delicious crème caramel

Actually I would preffer ice cream, it is so hot here. In norway !

@N3buchadnezzar What's "hot" for a norwegian?
We have 28 now (22:18) and humidity over 80%

8:19 PM
Above 273.15k !
In all seriousness, I think we have about 25 now, but it is rather late in the evening (22:20). Earlier it was 30

@egreg 28F? :p

@N3buchadnezzar That's hot indeed.
What time is sunset?

23 or 23.30 I think

@N3buchadnezzar A widget on my computer says that in Trondheim it's at 23:19. Cool

Well now I am in bergen, it is a tad earlier here =)

8:25 PM
@N3buchadnezzar Bergen: sunset 22:59, dusk 00:32. :)
No dusk in Trondheim

In the cities that lie closer to the North Pole the sun never goes down ^^

Q: How to put indices under argmin (using _ is not sufficient)

user995434How to put indices under "argmin" in: \operatorname{argmin}_{z} ? For the sum we can do something like: \sum\limits_{z}, but it does not work for the argmin example. EDIT MWE: \begin{equation} \label{myequation} F = \begin{cases} n + b + 1 & \text{if $a \neq \emptyset$}\\ \ti...

and, good night everybody!

@egreg Try to check out Tromsø or Vadsø

@N3buchadnezzar Yes, they don't have sunset and sunrise. I guess it's quite a problem in the winter. :)

It is also a problem in the summer
Want to sleep ? I will just hang this huge lightbulb above you forever, hope you do not mind

8:33 PM
@N3buchadnezzar I don't mind sleeping with open curtains. But I really don't know how it can be with the sun never setting.

Hm carrot cake.

@PauloCereda You're late, it's finished.

@egreg Oh. :(

@PauloCereda I told N3buchadnezzar to cut it into three parts, so he did like Obélix with the poisoned cake for Cleopatra. But the two thin slices were too thin and you weren't here. So…
You know "Asterix and Cleopatra", don't you?

@egreg Ah. :)
@egreg Yes, I know. :) Nice movie. :)

8:48 PM

@egreg LOL

@PauloCereda I was talking about the book. It's full of jokes like that.

@egreg Oh, my bad! I only watched the movie. :)
No TL2012 ISO yet. /sob

Om nom nom mking cake sounds
@PauloCereda is it hot in Brazil as well ?

@N3buchadnezzar We are in winter now. :) Around 20ºC. :)

8:56 PM
wooow

@PauloCereda Do you call that winter? :)

@egreg It's the only winter I know. :) The coldest temperature I can remember of was a freezing 4ºC morning one day, and around 10ºC during the day. :)

@PauloCereda That's similar to Catania; one evening I was going home from work and saw something strange. It took a while to realize it was snowing! But one hour later the temperature was around 10 again (in the night).
Probably some snow high on Etna, transported by the wind, actually.
In March one can go from the snow to the beach (and have a bath) in a few minutes. :

@egreg Oh. :) I like cold weather, but of course my definition of cold. :P
Someday I'll be in Italy to see how snow looks like. :)

@PauloCereda No snow in Brazil?

9:07 PM
@egreg Maybe in some parts of the south region (probably Rio Grande do Sul). :) But where I am (southeast) no sign of snow. :)

Winter here is ...

@PauloCereda Your mother should know snow.

I think my coldest is -25 or someth

Bologna and its mountains have it frequently.

@egreg Yes! :) She once told me how she used to stare at the window while snow falling outside. :)

9:09 PM
@N3buchadnezzar No, thanks. :P But we can go to -10 (not so frequently) However, snow in my town is rare.

@N3buchadnezzar Oh my!

-25 is rare, but -10 is common like half of the days in winter :p
@egreg Snow is fun the first few days, then it is cumbersome.
I guess it is better than what if feels like, but a cold wind makes all the difference
Trondheim (), historically, Nidaros and Trondhjem, is a city and municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. With a population of 176,348, it is the third most populous municipality in Norway and city in the country, although the fourth largest urban area. It is the administrative centre of Sør-Trøndelag county. Trondheim lies on the south shore of the Trondheimsfjord at the mouth of the river Nidelva. The city is dominated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), SINTEF, St. Olavs University Hospital and other technology-oriented institutions. The settlement w...
Oh my
Catania (; Greek: – Katáne; Latin: Catăna and Catĭna) is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse. It is the capital of the homonymous province, and is the second-largest city in Sicily and the tenth in Italy. Catania is known for its seismic history, having been destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1169, another in 1693, and several volcanic eruptions from the neighboring Mount Etna volcano, the most violent of which was in 1669. Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In the...

@N3buchadnezzar I know. Our coldest period is normally between the end of December and the beginning of February. OTOH, at the beginning of February, in Sicily there are celebrations for the blossoming of almond trees. They can start blossoming as soon as the first days of January.

Do you have much rain in Italy?

@N3buchadnezzar No, not much, in general.

9:17 PM
We have 2,250 mm =(

9:30 PM
When I'll be the ruler of the world, one of my first decrees will be the abolition of doublespacing; whoever is found guilty of it will be condemned to a cruel punishment. I'm thinking about the comfy chair, but perhaps it's too cruel.
3

@egreg The comfy chair! :D

@PauloCereda Do you think it's too harsh?

@egreg I think it's pretty cruel. :)

If you force everyone to use latex, there will be no doublespacing

@N3buchadnezzar I'll be rather liberal. ConTeXt will be allowed, provided a clear manual is written. Of course Plain TeX will be preserved and encouraged.

9:38 PM
How about simulating latex through word, or using Lyx?'

@N3buchadnezzar Go directly to prison. :)

leo
9:50 PM
perhaps this deserves more attention
and Hi all :)

@leo Hi! I don't think that no answer is less that half an hour is lack of attention. :)

leo
I'm wonder if that can be solved
that package must be improved to consider the column width and auto adjust if necessary
by the way, how can I upgrade my TL2011 distribution to TL2012 without erase and reinstall?

@leo I can't compile it.
@leo Install the 2012 release and keep the 2011 as backup if something goes wrong.

leo
I see
@egreg how look this? :-)

10:35 PM
@leo Definitely not bad. :) I wouldn't use "a)" with a slanted parenthesis. And "Arzelà" has the (grave) accent on the final vowel. :)

leo
@egreg :-O
I just send the work as is
my professor will laugh

10:48 PM
@leo At least correct Arzelà, please. :)

leo
@egreg yes I'll correct it
