Another question to which I think I know the answer. Suppose I define a local variable thus:

local Tables = {matchedrowids={}}

So, a local array called Tables.

Then, if I try to write:

local function Tables:PrintDocTable (b, rowidlist, dbsource, dbname, tablename, caption)

Lua returns an incomprehensible error involving a missing bracket.

I assume this is because calling a member function of a local variable local is redundant?

Though I don't see why it's necessary to treat it as an error.

Specifically, the error looks like:

 error loading module smyt.lua from file ./smyt.lua:
    ./smyt.lua:67: '(' expected near ':'

Not very helpful.

@DavidCarlisle In Lua function a:b(...) is syntactic sugar for function a.b(self, ...).

The only problem in the code above was that assigning to a field can't be local because the scope is defined by the containing directory.

@FaheemMitha It's an error because the change can still be visible after the scope ended (e.g. if Tables is a copy of a global variable) and that does not correspond to the normal behavior of local assignments.

@MarcelKrüger so it is, weird:-) well I suppose it matches the use, but having a shortcut on the function call seems more reasonable than a shortcut on the definition, that only occurs once:-)

@MarcelKrüger which older versions? These are imho the first version that can somehow count as "released" ;-). As long as it doesn't affect the normal luatex user, I don't see a problem to merge and upload this. We should make use of the next months to get as many problems with luahbtex found and fixed as possible and this is easier with more user having the newest code.

@barbarabeeton I think the Midwest encompasses too many parts for it to be accurate. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan don't seem to be much fazed by snow, although I do think they overdo the snow days in the schools. They also close schools for the cold, which I find strange too. My main comparison is Montreal, which gets a lot of snow and is also very cold, so it's definitely in the East Coast camp.

@AlanMunn -- We're heading to Quebec City for U.S. Thanksgiving. I'm taking my yak-trax. And staying well out from the "fall line" of snow from roofs. (There are plenty of signs on buildings with that warning.) I don't think @PauloCereda would like it much in winter; too much danger of freezing solid.

I remember vividly one time I had to make a lot of phone calls in one day (forgot why) and how sore my index finger got. One of my aunts did have a candlestick model when I was very young, but at some point it was replaced by the squarish one. I think the fact that the zero was at the very end of the cycle was a subtle way to discourage dialing the operator too often.

@DavidCarlisle I'm not really very fond of \nonscript applied by default; in a perfect world there should be space for personal taste. I believe that LuaTeX allows for setting preferred spacing in sub/superscripts, so I guess MathML should allow both ways, with some settable preference.
