Anybody know how I can trick github into hosting images in a wiki? Is there a viable alternative to putting the images in a repo of mine?

2:15 AM
How do you get rid of page numbers?
What exactly does thispagestyle{empty} do?

@JohnnyApplesauce it changes the current page's pagestyle (contents of headers and footers), to empty (which is not necessarily a completely empty style, but should).
@JohnnyApplesauce you could do \renewcommand\thepage{}.

@PauloCereda I just saw the Island of TeX TUGboat paper on Docker images. Maybe you are interested in the fact that I control both hub.docker.com/u/contextgarden and hub.docker.com/u/texlive.

@UlrikeFischer vvv

@DavidCarlisle ;-)

@UlrikeFischer I updated the adobe links as you suggested thanks, so I'm doing all the pdfs again then will re-linkcheck, I have removed luatex(-loader) completely and moved hobsub to its own repo.

@DavidCarlisle like this ^^^

@UlrikeFischer slightly, but more like

8:11 AM
@HenriMenke ooh thanks! (@TeXnician)
@DavidCarlisle oh no

@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle Akira changed xdvipdfmx: "I have installed a random number generator in [x]dvipdfmx." tug.org/pipermail/dvipdfmx/2019-November/000042.html

@HironobuYAMASHITA Thanks

yo'
12:45 PM
@PauloCereda btw, just today I was in a pub called Shot Goose for lunch, fortunately for you and @JosephWright it's not Shot Duck!

1:05 PM
@yo' are you in the UK?

yo'
@DavidCarlisle well, I'm in Oxford, but only virtually :) no, this is in Prague, there's a chain of restaurants called Potrefená Husa (Shot Goose) here

@yo' ah I factored in the translation but it still sounded like a typically English pub name, so I thought I'd ask:-)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle It's sort of a mixture of Czech and English style I'd say: high stools and high tables, larger choice of beer, etc.

If I define a local variable in a call to \directlua, then would it be local to that call to \directlua? This appears to be the case, and also seems reasonable, but I thought I would ask for confirmation.

1:28 PM
@FaheemMitha yes

1:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ok. Thank you. Are you aware if this is explicitly documented in the LuaTeX manual or elsewhere?
Another question to which I think I know the answer. Suppose I define a local variable thus:
local Tables = {matchedrowids={}}
So, a local array called Tables.
Then, if I try to write:
local function Tables:PrintDocTable (b, rowidlist, dbsource, dbname, tablename, caption)
Lua returns an incomprehensible error involving a missing bracket.
I assume this is because calling a member function of a local variable local is redundant?
Though I don't see why it's necessary to treat it as an error.
Specifically, the error looks like:
 error loading module smyt.lua from file ./smyt.lua:
    ./smyt.lua:67: '(' expected near ':'
Not very helpful.

2:03 PM
@FaheemMitha section 2.4.1 on directlua In such a chunk you can use the local directive t....
@FaheemMitha what do you want the : to do there, looks wrong. did you mean to have . ?

@DavidCarlisle I thought that's the syntax for member function.

@FaheemMitha no

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I see it. So it is mentioned.
@DavidCarlisle Oh. Ok, I'll check it. Thanks.
To be clear, I mean member function of an array. Is that the right terminology?

@FaheemMitha error message seems reasonable it got as far as local function Tables then needed to see the ( at the start of the param list.

Anyway, dinner. Back in a bit.
@DavidCarlisle It works without the local.
That's the change that causes the error.

2:08 PM
@FaheemMitha everything is a table in lua you want the entry with name PrintDoc

@DavidCarlisle That second usage of Table refers to a LaTeX table.
Or is it a TeX table? I assume the former.

@FaheemMitha well you can't give an entry in a table a local/global qualifier as it is an entry of that table, what would a local entry in a global table mean?
@FaheemMitha common idiom is to use

local function PrintDocTable .... then Tables.PrintDocTable = PrintDocTable

2:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle there is a colon operator in lua for a "self" method: lua.org/pil/16.html (but I won't try to find out what is happening here from this snippets).

@UlrikeFischer yes I know but that means if you have a variable zzz set to "foo" you can do zzz:gsub... and have the first argument of gsub be zzz, but I can't see how that helps in a function definition.

@DavidCarlisle there is also an example where it is used in a function definition function Account:withdraw (v) and my guess was that @FaheemMitha is trying something related, but naturally without a complete example ...

@DavidCarlisle In Lua function a:b(...) is syntactic sugar for function a.b(self, ...).
The only problem in the code above was that assigning to a field can't be local because the scope is defined by the containing directory.
@FaheemMitha It's an error because the change can still be visible after the scope ended (e.g. if Tables is a copy of a global variable) and that does not correspond to the normal behavior of local assignments.

2:42 PM
@MarcelKrüger so it is, weird:-) well I suppose it matches the use, but having a shortcut on the function call seems more reasonable than a shortcut on the definition, that only occurs once:-)

@DavidCarlisle I declared the table local to start with.
@MarcelKrüger I declared Tables local first. Then I tried to declare local function Tables:PrintDocTable . So PrintDocTable is a member function of Tables, if that is the right term. Is that much clear?

@FaheemMitha doesn't matter you can't have an entry in a table be local or global it is just an entry in a table. As marcel says I was wrong in that you can use : but having declared it a local prefix you can't reference a table entry
@FaheemMitha just remove local

But Lua doesn't like it when I declare that member function local.
@DavidCarlisle An entry in a table can't be local or global?

@FaheemMitha no, what would it mean?

@DavidCarlisle I would assume that local (and global) would be a no-op. Since the scope was already determined by the enclosing table.

2:56 PM
@FaheemMitha no it's an error

Regardless, Lua could produce a better error message.

@FaheemMitha you have local function so after that you can only have a local name, so it read as far as Tables Then there has to be a ( for the parameters but it found : so gave an error. Doesn't seem bad to me.

@DavidCarlisle Oh. So it wasn't expecting to find a member function?

@FaheemMitha "member function" is I think a term you have made up? but after local function you can't reference an element of a table you can only specify a local unprefixed name.

@DavidCarlisle I was using the term "member function" generically. But I thought Lua did have such a term.

3:01 PM
@FaheemMitha in Lua everything (more or less) is a table, so it's simpler to think of it that way than to hope you can think of it like python or C++ or whatever and it'll be the same

@DavidCarlisle Ok.

1 hour later…
4:30 PM
@UlrikeFischer Which version of luahbtex is shipped by TeX Live and MikTeX on Windows?

@MarcelKrüger This is LuaHBTeX, Version 1.11.2 (TeX Live 2019/W32TeX)
This is LuaHBTeX, Version 1.11.2 (MiKTeX 2.9.7250 64-bit)

@UlrikeFischer Thanks. This means that be basically should have sufficiently new versions to support the fix for github.com/latex3/luaotfload/issues/107 on all relevant platforms. I'm thinking about merging it. Do you think it's ok to break compatibility with older versions already?

4:53 PM
@MarcelKrüger I think anyone who has used harf mode knows they are on a bleeding edge trial system and can't complain if you change anything.

@MarcelKrüger which older versions? These are imho the first version that can somehow count as "released" ;-). As long as it doesn't affect the normal luatex user, I don't see a problem to merge and upload this. We should make use of the next months to get as many problems with luahbtex found and fixed as possible and this is easier with more user having the newest code.

5:04 PM
@WillRobertson tex.stackexchange.com/q/516443 I had a quick look but will have to trace later, but you probably have a better idea what is supposed to happen

5:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle is it suspicious if pst-pdf contains commands like \ppf@is@pdfTeX@graphic which use stuff like \Gin@setfile?

@UlrikeFischer yes I gave up the will to carry on reading at that point and decided to ping Will instead:-)
@UlrikeFischer somewhere it will be catcode12 issue. Somewhere....

@DavidCarlisle I had a deja-vu, and so searched: github.com/rolfn/pst-pdf/issues/1

@UlrikeFischer oh yes I remember now:-)

5:38 PM
quack

yo'
@PauloCereda boo!

@yo' ooh
/quacks

5:57 PM
@barbarabeeton I think the Midwest encompasses too many parts for it to be accurate. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan don't seem to be much fazed by snow, although I do think they overdo the snow days in the schools. They also close schools for the cold, which I find strange too. My main comparison is Montreal, which gets a lot of snow and is also very cold, so it's definitely in the East Coast camp.

@AlanMunn -- We're heading to Quebec City for U.S. Thanksgiving. I'm taking my yak-trax. And staying well out from the "fall line" of snow from roofs. (There are plenty of signs on buildings with that warning.) I don't think @PauloCereda would like it much in winter; too much danger of freezing solid.

@barbarabeeton oh no
/quacks in despair and in cold

@PauloCereda -- Last night in Providence, it got down to -10C. Time for long woollies and silk turtlenecks. (And somebody said this is supposed to be a relatively warm and wet winter. We'll see.)

6:12 PM
@barbarabeeton The coldest I've experienced was in Quebec city in January. It went down to about -35C, which is noticeably colder than -20 or even -25.

@barbarabeeton ooh turtles. :)

@barbarabeeton I'm sure that @DavidCarlisle has some frozen duck in his freezer.

Wait a minute...
-10C?!
@AlanMunn oh no
/quacks in despair

@PauloCereda That's balmy winter weather. See above... :)

@AlanMunn ooh :)

6:15 PM
@AlanMunn -- Eek! We're going to Iceland for New Year's. I'll be reasonably prepared, but certainly hope that it doesn't get that cold. I have yet to find gloves that keep my hands warm. Even down-stuffed ski mitts don't really do it.
@PauloCereda -- Remember: -40C = -40F.

@barbarabeeton I think Iceland never gets super cold.

@barbarabeeton ooh

@AlanMunn -- They do have internal heat sources.

@barbarabeeton Average January temps in Reykjavik is about 0C with lows of -2. In Quebec City in November it's about the same.
@barbarabeeton When I went to Iceland in late May a few years ago it was warmer there than in Michigan.

@AlanMunn -- In Quebec City this year, it has already been colder. We're hoping that the river will still be passable so we can take the ferry over to Levis. The last time I was in Iceland, it was high summer, and very pleasant, not overly hot like it was at home.

6:25 PM
@AlanMunn No, but it can get quite windy. That together with high humidity can make 0 °C feel very cold indeed.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yes, that's for sure. One of the nice things about Montreal is that it's quite dry in the winter, so -20 doesn't seem that cold.

yo'
6:49 PM
Right, -5 is usually warmer than +2

@barbarabeeton M just got back from a school trip to Iceland

@DavidCarlisle -- What did he think of Strokkur? (Geysir doesn't erupt much any more, at least not without active encouragement.)

@barbarabeeton something was erupting looking at his pics, not sure if it was that one.

7:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh hot cheese

@DavidCarlisle Very likely Strokkur, yes. I think it's the only one they've got that erupts with sufficient regularity for touristic purposes. I've been there, twice, but that was long ago.
Strokkur er goshver í Haukadal. Strokkur er næst stærsti goshver á Geysissvæðinu. Einnig er til goshver sem heitir Litli strokkur. == Tengt efni == Geysir...
↑↑↑ Language lesson. ;-)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no
In other news, my new phone has arrived!

@PauloCereda Cool. Can it run luatex?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yes, through SSH. :)

@PauloCereda That's cheating.

7:18 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no

yo'
7:28 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen well, to "can", the answer is certainly "yes, it can", as the device is certainly capable of it; whether the OS is, that's another question...

@PauloCereda what is it?

@DavidCarlisle Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

@PauloCereda it looks like a phone:-) I blame those apple people all phones look the same now.

@DavidCarlisle indeed! :)

7:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle No, this is what a phone looks like:

@HaraldHanche-Olsen yes
@HaraldHanche-Olsen but you needed wide pockets in those days

@DavidCarlisle and a very long extension cord

@DavidCarlisle you need them now too ;-)

8:09 PM
@UlrikeFischer I think I finally beat #75 into submission so I'll try to build a ctan update...

@DavidCarlisle ;-)

Is the main site down?

@mickep Yes

@JosephWright OK, thanks!

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright I'm also running make in texlive-source so hopefully I'll have a lulatex-dev too...
@JosephWright you've got mail..

This is LuaHBTeX, Version 1.11.2 (TeX Live 2020/dev)
@JosephWright @UlrikeFischer ^^

@DavidCarlisle Oooh

@JosephWright now i just have to see if the tl2019 fmtutil-sys picks it up and builds lualatex-dev or whether I need to fiddle more...

@HaraldHanche-Olsen -- No, no! That's too modern! It has to be black, with edges that aren't as rounded. (Or to go even further back, the "candlestick" phone (pictures of both on this page: theoldtelephone.co.uk/Telephone_Pages/Candlestick.htm )

@JosephWright works (I just had to add a symlink) then

@UlrikeFischer does luaotfload need to be quite so chatty on the terminal? ^^
@JosephWright oh fmtutil-sys --byengine luahbtex built lualatex-dev but it's PL3 shouldn't it have been a pre-release? what do you get with a tlmgr installed binary?

8:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle Er, not sure :)

@JosephWright ah I see: it's your fault:-)
@JosephWright at some point I did an l3build installl on one of the feature branches, unquote I think which left /home/davidc/texmf/tex/latex-dev/base/latex.ltx in my path, so it wil have built off there. I'll clean up....

@DavidCarlisle one line isn't chatty ;-(

now I am back in September:
$ lualatex-dev \\stop
This is LuaHBTeX, Version 1.11.2 (TeX Live 2020/dev)
 restricted system commands enabled.
LaTeX2e <2019-10-01> pre-release-3 (development 2019-11-14 branch)

@DavidCarlisle I have develop version there currently, but it is sometimes a bit confusing ;-). Do you know if one can teach fmtutil-sys to build a set of formats? e.g. latex-dev,pdflatex-dev,lualatex-dev?

@DavidCarlisle Should I just update CTAN with PR1?

8:56 PM
@JosephWright Petra said she wants updates now and not next week ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Huh?

@JosephWright in a comment to oberdiek ;-)

@barbarabeeton Yes, black is more right, I agree. But I have never seen the candlestick one other than in museums. I remember vividly one time I had to make a lot of phone calls in one day (forgot why) and how sore my index finger got. I had to resort to using different fingers to give the main dialling finger a rest.

@JosephWright see team list "The earlier the better,"

@HaraldHanche-Olsen -- My mother had the squarish black one, and it was still the only one she had at the end of her life. One of my aunts did have a candlestick model when I was very young, but at some point it was replaced by the squarish one. I think the fact that the zero was at the very end of the cycle was a subtle way to discourage dialing the operator too often.

9:08 PM
@UlrikeFischer That line is kind of useless though, especially on logging level 0 where normally only real warnings are logged. Maybe we could make it 1?

@MarcelKrüger no objection. I just update the lualibs files in the texmf and then will update the version number. Btw: there is something wrong in the tagging: the readme.md got not tagged, I had to do it manually at the last upload.

@UlrikeFischer I usually just use --all and tell it to do them all

@DavidCarlisle it takes a bit long on my machine.

@UlrikeFischer yes but quicker than reading the manual to find out how to just build the needed ones.

@UlrikeFischer Ok, I found the problem with the tagging, I'll push the changes when you are done.

9:26 PM
@MarcelKrüger just pushed, version is now at 3.1201 (or should I have added a -dev?)

@UlrikeFischer I think adding -dev is best, then it is consistent with eventual tags. I can change it, then that's also a good test for the tagging fix.

@UlrikeFischer oberdiek, makerobust,hobsub gone to ctan....

@MarcelKrüger ok.
@DavidCarlisle do we have list of packages to strike through?

@UlrikeFischer you mean for the next update, or this?

@DavidCarlisle and the past ones, I'm already loosing track which have been removed. Actually I did have a list, I wonder where I have put it.

9:37 PM
@UlrikeFischer ifpdf ifluatex ifvtex (to iftex) luatex luatex-loader (to somewhere) hobsub hobsub-generic hobsub-hyperref (to ho-tex/hobsub) makerobust (to ho-tex/makerobust) grffile (to ho-tex/grffile)
@UlrikeFischer that's less than 10% of the total and they are all tiny ones.....
@UlrikeFischer next in my sights are the atzzz hook packages, bookmark, and pdftexcmds

@DavidCarlisle I found the csv I made last year. I'm updating it now.

Looking at the comments on the deleted answers on this question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/516296/… -- the comments that are "From Review" seem fairly generic and do not even take into account that the person posting these non-answers might be the same as the OP... seems like an unfortunate problem.
Also, completely unrelated and off-topic: Donald Knuth (and others) picking cotton (etc) in Uzbekistan: foto-history.livejournal.com/12988233.html

@barbarabeeton, @egreg any thoughts about \nonscript spacing? lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-mathml4/2019Nov/0007.html

11:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm not really very fond of \nonscript applied by default; in a perfect world there should be space for personal taste. I believe that LuaTeX allows for setting preferred spacing in sub/superscripts, so I guess MathML should allow both ways, with some settable preference.
