I've seen carillons played before (smaller ones), and the carrilonist wore leather hand protectors. I was a bit surprised to see this played bare-handed. I just wonder what the neighbors were thinking ...

@JosephWright It was my first reaction but then I thought I should perhaps be a bit more careful. But we simply can't test against all this engines.

@UlrikeFischer True, but this can be tested at least for the present, or add a minimal engine test

@JosephWright but a minimal engine test will only show that it loads. If I pull a new fontloader and this one (or already the current one) contains something that luajit doesn't like we get the next complain.

@barbarabeeton (@yo') They are amazing indeed! In my hometown, some 400 m from my parents', the local Catholic church has one of these. They use it to announce the time from 7 am to 5 pm, and at 6 pm they play a song depending on which time of the year it is. I think the neighbourhood of Chicago got really confused by the bells ringing out of time :-)

@AlanMunn -- Nice! (Brown has only a single bell, but, relevant to the carillon location at U Chicago, it does have a "Rockefeller Library", as well as other buildings funded by John D., Jr.) Now, a more linguistic question. As I was growing up, my mother pronounced it as if it were spelled "carillion" (stress on second syllable), so that's how I've always pronounced it. Is this regional, or simply anomalous?

@JosephWright The consensus has long been that Atlassian don't care about Mercurial at all. Sean Farley has quite a lot to say about it when I talked to him about it a few months ago.

Sean used to work for Atlassian, on Mercurial Bitbucket stuff.

He said it wasn't a pleasant experience. I got the feeling that he was probably restrained by considerations of good taste, in expressing how he truly felt.

Anyway, time to find another platform to sign up on. I was thinking about sr.ht, but hadn't got around to it. Sigh.

Ironical this would happen just when Mercurial was gaining a definite edge over the competition.

Lot of chatter about this on #mercurial. Unsurprisingly.

@AlanMunn -- It appears that you use reddit. Please take a look at this file (it's a paper that will appear in the TUG 2019 proceedings), and follow the link in reference [1]. One of the comments is from a person trying to use linguistics-related packages who looks like he could use some help.

@barbarabeeton I don't actually use reddit although I search in it sometimes, since for certain topics it can be quite helpful. The comments from the linguistics person are a bit vague, and perhaps overly pessimistic. There are many questions on the site about custom university classes. They just need to provide us with a link. And for most problems it's possible to construct a MWE.

@barbarabeeton There's another issue that a common site that shows up if you google LaTeX+linguistics is woefully out of date.

@barbarabeeton In other new, Herb asked to republish my "One page dictatorial guide to LaTeX package" in TeXnische Comedie. :)

@AlanMunn -- I haven't figured out how to cope with info that's out of date, unless I'm able to edit the page or contact the author/maintainer. It's a real problem. I once tried to edit the LaTeX wikibook to correct something that was horribly wrong, but my attempt was rejected because the "watchers" on the site didn't think I knew what I was talking about. So I've given up on that.

Hello @AlanMunn I am thinking of getting a Macbook Air, which has the least powerful processor among all Macs. Is it powerful enough to compile LaTeX quickly?

@AlanMunn -- Nice! (I presume you've already noticed the glitcg in footnote 2.) Too bad you're getting deaccessioned. (Maybe this could find a home on the tug box; I'll talk to Karl.)

@JaspervanLooij Unless your documents are unusually large or use lots of tikz and such, it should be more than adequate.

@JaspervanLooij I'm sure it should be no problem. The real problem with Macs is memory and SSD space, which is always too little in the base models. So if you can afford it, get as much as you can.
