@barbarabeeton Hi Barbara! From the same guy who made the video about the pipe organ in Chicago, here's one about a Carillon (which I didn't even knew what was until I saw the video): youtube.com/watch?v=VkRIMgTU7cA Pretty nice too, if you've got the time to watch it. Enjoy :-)

@PhelypeOleinik -- Thank you! That's an amazing instrument!
I've seen carillons played before (smaller ones), and the carrilonist wore leather hand protectors. I was a bit surprised to see this played bare-handed. I just wonder what the neighbors were thinking ...

@JosephWright well it fits the "there can be only one" discussion ;-(.

@UlrikeFischer That should be the answer!

@JosephWright It was my first reaction but then I thought I should perhaps be a bit more careful. But we simply can't test against all this engines.

@UlrikeFischer True, but this can be tested at least for the present, or add a minimal engine test

@JosephWright but a minimal engine test will only show that it loads. If I pull a new fontloader and this one (or already the current one) contains something that luajit doesn't like we get the next complain.

@barbarabeeton (@yo') They are amazing indeed! In my hometown, some 400 m from my parents', the local Catholic church has one of these. They use it to announce the time from 7 am to 5 pm, and at 6 pm they play a song depending on which time of the year it is. I think the neighbourhood of Chicago got really confused by the bells ringing out of time :-)

@JosephWright Herbert is keeping you busy ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Sees so

@PhelypeOleinik @barbarabeeton My university (as do quite a few other universities in the US) also has a carillon with weekly concerts. music.msu.edu/carillon
@PhelypeOleinik @barbarabeeton This is the more informative link: music.msu.edu/carillon/…

> Atlassian

After much consideration, we've decided to remove Mercurial support from Bitbucket Cloud and the API. Mercurial features and repositories will be officially removed from Bitbucket and its API on June 1, 2020.

What used to be a very fragmented version control software market has rapidly matured. Mercurial usage on Bitbucket is steadily declining, and the percentage of new Bitbucket users choosing Mercurial has fallen to less than 1%. At the same time, Git has become the standard. According to a Stack Overflow Developer Survey, almost 90% of developers use Git, while Mercurial i
@FaheemMitha ^^^

@JosephWright Yes, I know, I got the email. But thank you.

@AlanMunn -- Nice! (Brown has only a single bell, but, relevant to the carillon location at U Chicago, it does have a "Rockefeller Library", as well as other buildings funded by John D., Jr.) Now, a more linguistic question. As I was growing up, my mother pronounced it as if it were spelled "carillion" (stress on second syllable), so that's how I've always pronounced it. Is this regional, or simply anomalous?

@FaheemMitha reddit.com/r/programming/comments/csy2tf/… from your POV, I think

@barbarabeeton I have no idea. I haven't heard that pronunciation; for me it's initial stress.

3:56 PM
@JosephWright The consensus has long been that Atlassian don't care about Mercurial at all. Sean Farley has quite a lot to say about it when I talked to him about it a few months ago.

@FaheemMitha Ah, right

Sean used to work for Atlassian, on Mercurial Bitbucket stuff.
He said it wasn't a pleasant experience. I got the feeling that he was probably restrained by considerations of good taste, in expressing how he truly felt.
Anyway, time to find another platform to sign up on. I was thinking about sr.ht, but hadn't got around to it. Sigh.
Ironical this would happen just when Mercurial was gaining a definite edge over the competition.
Lot of chatter about this on #mercurial. Unsurprisingly.

4:28 PM
@JosephWright @FaheemMitha Not much interested in mercurial, but the next reddit thread on the guy with the NULL licence plate was entertaining (although not for him). wired.com/story/… @PauloCereda

@AlanMunn -- It appears that you use reddit. Please take a look at this file (it's a paper that will appear in the TUG 2019 proceedings), and follow the link in reference [1]. One of the comments is from a person trying to use linguistics-related packages who looks like he could use some help.

@barbarabeeton I don't actually use reddit although I search in it sometimes, since for certain topics it can be quite helpful. The comments from the linguistics person are a bit vague, and perhaps overly pessimistic. There are many questions on the site about custom university classes. They just need to provide us with a link. And for most problems it's possible to construct a MWE.
@barbarabeeton There's another issue that a common site that shows up if you google LaTeX+linguistics is woefully out of date.
@barbarabeeton In other new, Herb asked to republish my "One page dictatorial guide to LaTeX package" in TeXnische Comedie. :)

@AlanMunn -- I haven't figured out how to cope with info that's out of date, unless I'm able to edit the page or contact the author/maintainer. It's a real problem. I once tried to edit the LaTeX wikibook to correct something that was horribly wrong, but my attempt was rejected because the "watchers" on the site didn't think I knew what I was talking about. So I've given up on that.
@AlanMunn -- Where's the original? (Not in TUGboat.) I'm interested.

@AlanMunn hmmm seven

@barbarabeeton msu.edu/~amunn/latex/latex-guide.pdf There is a slightly newer version but MSU is eliminating our filespace and I'm not sure how to update my webpage now without making a whole new one with Wordpress. :(

@AlanMunn no birds or funny references, bah. :)
Nice typesetting, as usual! :)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh do not annoy the Swedes

@PauloCereda Who's afraid of @mickep?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no

@PauloCereda :)

Hello @AlanMunn I am thinking of getting a Macbook Air, which has the least powerful processor among all Macs. Is it powerful enough to compile LaTeX quickly?

@AlanMunn -- Nice! (I presume you've already noticed the glitcg in footnote 2.) Too bad you're getting deaccessioned. (Maybe this could find a home on the tug box; I'll talk to Karl.)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Oh, my kids love that video! :)

@JaspervanLooij Unless your documents are unusually large or use lots of tikz and such, it should be more than adequate.

@JaspervanLooij I'm sure it should be no problem. The real problem with Macs is memory and SSD space, which is always too little in the base models. So if you can afford it, get as much as you can.

Ah thanks @AlanMunn and @HaraldHanche-Olsen now I can go ahead and buy my first Apple product!

7:52 PM
@barbarabeeton Nope. Good eye (not surprising). Maybe I should turn it into 'nae'. :) Or more properly, 'dinnae'

@AlanMunn -- Depends on the audience, I think.

@AlanMunn @barbarabeeton is the sharpeyedest!

@barbarabeeton Well I know a few Scottish LaTeX using linguists at least. :)

@AlanMunn Dew knot?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yore spell chequer is grate.

8:05 PM
@AlanMunn -- Geoff Pullum may qualify, no? (He uses LaTeX and beamer; at least, that was how he prepared his slides when he gave a lecture at Brown.)

@AlanMunn Time to dig up that old (?) classic: Spell Chequer by Martha Snow.

9:06 PM
@barbarabeeton Definitely a LaTeX user. I had no idea he was actually Scottish, but so Wikipedia says.
@barbarabeeton And @PauloCereda will be happy to find out which side of the editor wars he fall on. Unix rules! Linux rocks! Windows sucks! vi rocks! emacs sucks!
