@JosephWright @marmot I'm waiting for a DuckBoat badge :)
@CarLaTeX Ducks do not need a life vest. ;-)
@marmot I said DuckBoat, not DuckJacket, lol
@CarLaTeX Yes, they do not yet carry Duck boats. Feature request?
@marmot No, they don't carry them but prof. van Duck writes them! :)
@CarLaTeX Prof. van Duck writes badges?
04:56
@marmot No, he writes DuckBoats :)
@CarLaTeX Yes, but you said you wanted a badge. ;-)
@marmot Yes, a DuckBoat badge!
05:31
@JosephWright Btw, I think @AlanMunn will like it very much
@Ulysses Hi!
Hi CarLaTex!
I thought I'd check out chat (at your suggestion) and see if I can get my topic moved. I flagged it yesterday but nothing has happened, and I just thought I'd see if I could speed that up.
@Ulysses Here you can tell @JosephWright or @StefanKottwitz directly, I suspect flags on Meta are not checked so frequently as on the main site
Ah ok. This is the question, for anyone who needs to know: https://tex.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/8325/tex-art-fun-mandalas
I just need it moved from Meta to the main TeX site.
06:03
Any idea , how this can be drawn using tikz?
@GermanShepherd There are many similar questions on the main site. Which part do you have problem to obtain? (I'm not really a tikz user)
@Ulysses Done
@mickep the squiggly lines at node g.
It would be very helpful if you could please direct me to some relevant question, if you find one.
@GermanShepherd Oh, so it was the "squigglity". One way to obtain it would be to add more points along the path, just a bit up and a bit down. But you look for an automatic way?
06:20
@mickep Yeah. I want something I can easily make changes to, since I will be drawing more complex automata.
@GermanShepherd Maybe this method will help you to make lines just a bit "random"? And perhaps it can be combined with this example.
:50731754 \begin{tikzpicture}[->,semithick]
\node[state](0){s};
\node[state](1) [right = 2cm of 0] {g};
 \draw[decorate,->] (0.east) -- (1.5cm,0.7cm)--(2.5cm,-0.7cm)--(1.west)  ;
\end{tikzpicture}
The image has too many sharp lines when i give extra points
@GermanShepherd
\documentclass[tikz,border=3.14mm]{standalone}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\path node[circle,draw] (s) {$s$} ++ (5,0) node[circle,draw] (g) {$g$};
\draw[-stealth] (s.east) to[out=15,in=165] ++ (1,0)
to[out=-15,in=-165] ++ (1,0) to[out=15,in=165] ++ (1,0)
to[out=-15,in=-165](g);
\draw[-stealth,shorten >=4pt,shorten <=4pt] (g) to[out=-40,in=-90] ++ (2.5,0) to[out=90,in=0]
++ (-1,1) to[out=180,in=40] (g);
\draw[-stealth,shorten >=4pt,shorten <=4pt] (g) to[out=-60,in=-90] ++ (2,0) to[out=90,in=0]
@marmot you saved the day !

Hello my friends in the U.S. and the Commonwealth!

How do you say to such (general!) "Tasks"?

1. Halve an angle.
2. Double an angle.
3. Double a distance.
......
(for example!)

Tasks? Problems?

I only find the word "exercises". But in my opinion, exercises are more like such tasks:
a. Solve x + 3 = 7
b. Construct (a, b, c).
......
07:53
@cis In what context are you looking for such a name? Also, to me "Halve an angle" does not look different from "Solve x+3=7".
cis
cis
08:07
@mickep "Halve an angle" is a general case, "Solve x+3=7" is a specific case.
@cis yes but in what context are you saying "halve an angle" since it's not something you can actually do without a specific case, it is not presumably (in that form) an exercise being set for a student to solve.
@CarLaTeX I shall of course be expecting the pineapple pizza bounty later.
cis
cis
@DavidCarlisle OK. I am looking for a word for tasks that describe or explain a general process.

In contrast to tasks that solve a special case or are intended for practice = exercises.
@cis "task or "problem" as in "You can construct a ruler and compass construction to solve the problem of halving an angle, but not of trisecting an angle"
@cis "task" has an implication that it is doable, you give students tasks to complete, but "problem" is more open ended. It would be a bit cruel to set trisecting an angle as a "task"
cis
cis
@DavidCarlisle Ah, o.k.
08:29
@DavidCarlisle Depending on the tools available. If you have the picture mode, I guess you can trisect! :)
@DavidCarlisle To whom to assign the bounty will be a tough call :)
08:43
@DavidCarlisle do you know this very nice article about "what to do when the trisector comes"? (researchgate.net/publication/…)

@PauloCereda ^^^ SamCarter made a Tour des Tikzlings
@UlrikeFischer oooooh
@UlrikeFischer the nurse mouse is fantastic :)
@barbarabeeton hi, noticed your message from the results of a search. You may be interested in this disussion on the main meta - I think your experience may be related. Long story short, apparently there is some "advertisement testing" undergoing, but not many sites had the luck to be warned about that.
@PauloCereda and the windows in the cathedrale, and the flying Bär (we were at Carcassone once ...), and the cave of champagne, and ...
@UlrikeFischer ooh <3
09:44
@UlrikeFischer "women have too much sense to waste time on such things" whatever can he mean?
@DavidCarlisle ooh mean
@DavidCarlisle that's a polite way to say that women waste their time on other nonsense ;-)
@UlrikeFischer animated images of fake animals avoiding Great Britain perhaps?
@DavidCarlisle oh
@DavidCarlisle Surely there might be a snowman in a pulpit inside Notre Dame
Also I thought Mont Blanc was a brand of a very expensive pen
10:07
@DavidCarlisle ;-) But there were at least in Liverpool and London, i.sstatic.net/SfggS.gif, but imho never in Germany. I should complain.

@Derpy -- Thanks for that reference. It's not quite the same thing. I haven't seen any of the totally "outside" and irrelevant ads, it's just that the community ads have disappeared, and I think that's too bad. (@JosephWright and @StefanKottwitz -- can you find out about this, please?)
@barbarabeeton Be wary that afaik not only the "irrelevant ads" have been greatly reduced after the first days, apparently they are geolocalized and some user are just getting ads for Stack-related product (for example Stack for Teams). I don't know your site so probably your guesses are better than mine, but I wouldn't be surprised if the two things were related because of the apparent timing match. Maybe someone dev modified something in order to perform the testing that broke your community ads?
Anyway, just warning you folks here since I couldn't find a list of sites involved in this test and the info aren't exactly well advertised.... apparently some sites didn't even realized there was a running test
@Derpy -- I don't remember seeing any notice, but I don't always read the "global" notices. Anyway, I've asked our moderators to please look into it.

@Derpy @barbarabeeton This is just a continuation of SE drowning. The Powers seriously start not to take users seriously. The company is now nothing but a corporate body.
@yo' -- Indeed. Sad.

@barbarabeeton unrelated and more positive business: If you couldn't get the stuff from an American site and there was a problem with shipping from Europe, let me know. I think there's still time for me or someone else to arrange things.
13:46
@yo' -- Yes, Karl is actively checking. We will certainly keep you posted, and thanks -- you found a really good item.
yo'

@barbarabeeton well, I hope it'll turn out well :-)
@yo' -- We'll certainly let you know the outcome.

@DavidCarlisle there's a "One problem" mail in the TL list. After reading it, I think I have two problems. :)
@PauloCereda hmm, me as well
though google translate does a good job
@daleif :)
@PauloCereda Ты не умеешь читать по русски?
Friends, got an email for this mono font, perhaps someone likes it: atipofoundry.com/fonts/basier-mono
Нету
15:06
@DavidCarlisle nyet
@PauloCereda quack
@DavidCarlisle ooh quack
@PauloCereda Oh, I like their choice of big letters white on black. :)
@mickep :)
@PauloCereda They should have a parameter p and use all p-norms, just not p=2 and p=infinity (even though the circles probably are not true circles).
15:13
@mickep Oh
@mickep it's too much information :)
@PauloCereda \usepackage[p=3]{lp-font}
@DavidCarlisle ^^^ hmmmm
@mickep ooh hold on
@PauloCereda ?
@DavidCarlisle ResearchGate thingy :)
@PauloCereda what standard have I been added to?
15:16
@DavidCarlisle Standards related to the display or exchange of mathematical information
ooh
@PauloCereda ah so I wouldn't have seen that as I have them in my spam filter....
@DavidCarlisle wise tagging :)
@PauloCereda ah Bob Sutor added me, it seems.
@DavidCarlisle Yes!
@PauloCereda strange what you find in the spam filtered mail:-)
15:28
@DavidCarlisle ooh :)

Why is \@ifstar defined short in the kernel?
16:35
@Skillmon It's only used in places where the first argument is short ... but the kernel has had various issues in this regard
16:52
@Skillmon it is almost always just used with two tokens as arguments, it would be pretty weird to have a par there wouldn't it?
@Skillmon but the real reason of course is simpler, just that "it's always been that way"
17:04
@DavidCarlisle but it lowers its usage for package code. Today I tried to do something like \@ifstar{\par\something}{\leavevmode\something}
@Skillmon that's why \endgraf is there:-)
@DavidCarlisle guess what, that's what I used.
@Skillmon long is designed to catch runaway arguments hitting a blank line in the document, they hardly ever do anything useful in code so it's not that uncommon to need endgraf for such a case.
@DavidCarlisle I think you meant short instead of long, didn't you?
17:26
@Skillmon er well I meant "the concept of long" but yes. Also a user option of a * to start a paragraph seems a bit strange:-)
17:45
@DavidCarlisle -- Some people just can't be trusted, it seems. Have fun.
@DavidCarlisle it was a macro that would insert a \hline or \vline based on some other things. Removed it eventually, wasn't making much sense.

I haven't seen this yet another funny error message before! ! End of file on the terminal... why?
@yo' code to reproduce?
@yo' oh, just Ctrl+D when in interactive mode.

yo'
@Skillmon exactly!
I simply love the why? part :)
@yo' LOL
@yo' cannot wait the Spanish stereotypical question: ¿Por queeeeeeee?
:D

@PauloCereda ¿Por que? ¡Por favor!

2 hours later…
21:22
@DavidCarlisle I added the harf code to my format, it seems to work fine:
LaTeX2e <2018-12-01>
luaotfload | main : initialization completed in 2.125 seconds
!!!! Experimental harfbuzz module loaded !!!!
@UlrikeFischer that harftex or Luigi's luatex+hb?
@DavidCarlisle both.
@yo' A funny but true story. Some long time ago some code reported the message Ois is hi.. Do you understand what that means? Any other user here? (Hint: @MartinScharrer should be able to understand it.)
@UlrikeFischer ohh, is there any operational difference between the two?
@DavidCarlisle I made a lualatex.ini that loads the lua in everyjob (like luaotfload) and used it for the normal luatex (where it doesn't load the harfbuzz module), the experimental luatex and harftex. Seems to work fine everywhere.
21:31
@UlrikeFischer yes that seems to be the right plan
@DavidCarlisle until now I didn't see any difference between the engines.
22:30
@marmot understood.
@Skillmon Good for you! ;-)
@marmot If I recall correctly the Bundestrojaner had a line of code reading Ozapft is
@Skillmon Yes, but this is common knowledge. Compare the google search results of "Ozapt is" to those of "Ois is hi".
@marmot yes, that one is far too wide spread.
