12:00 AM
@manooooh Well it's a High Energy Physics paper, not an AMS journal paper.

@AlanMunn that makes sense, thank you

12:36 AM
@manooooh people use all kinds of markup. =& in alignments \big( instead of \bigl( why are you surprised if they use ~ (which isn't that bad, depends where it is used)?
@manooooh article is the most commonly used latex class, so it's not surprising if you find article class documents on arxiv.

@DavidCarlisle they did not have their own package?
@DavidCarlisle I am surprised because of their syntax

@manooooh arxiv don't have any specific class of their own as far as I know.

@DavidCarlisle sorry I mean amstex, that class either?

@manooooh no one uses amstex now.

12:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh, some time ago I said that "the X package is not used anymore" (I don't remember what package was) but then you corrected me. I should say "the X package was amstex"!

@manooooh -- the initial minus in [-2x - 4y]*regardless of the size of the brackets* is not binary but unary. binary would imply that -2 is being subtracted from the left bracket, which is both impossible and absurd.

@barbarabeeton yeah... the minus sign does not always imply that there are a subtraction...

@UlrikeFischer -- there are also tamarins, several varieties, and all very cute. (but not nearly so chubby as capybaras. i once attended a lecture by gerald durrell, founder of the jersey wildlife trust. he drew wonderful sketches of some of the animals that had been collected for the zoo. my favorite was a capybara slurping up a long strand of spaghetti; apparently they had trouble getting the critter to eat what it was supposed to but found that it was quite attracted to spaghetti!)

1:25 AM
@manooooh -- barbara beeton believes that amsmath has defined everything according to established u.s. math typographic traditions. quite a few things were not defined (at least some because of limited resources when it was written), and that is mainly the intent of mathtools -- to fill in such gaps. but as @DavidCarlisle says, amsmath is open source, so you can redefine things if you like, just don't call the rewritten package amsmath or claim that it meets the same requirements.

@barbarabeeton yeah for sure, it seems these requirements are only for me, nobody wants that. Thank for your support

1:42 AM
@DavidCarlisle -- er, not quite true. but ams doesn't support amstex any more. if a paper is submitted using amstex, it's rekeyed in latex. that is documented procedure.

5 hours later…
6:44 AM
@barbarabeeton yes of course, I'm sure there are some people who use VMS or windows 3.11 as well, but in terms of global usage as a measure of whether another organisation such as arxiv needs to support amstex, I think rounding to the nearest 1000 (or 100?) users and saying "no one uses it" is likely to be as true as anything.

7:00 AM
@AlanMunn Hmm …. I've been using \LaTeX all over the place myself without thinking about it much, but you do have a point – it is indeed annoying (though not quite as bad as itex (ding)). I guess I shall stop doing it.

Hello! Does somebody know, how I can contact Hendri Adriaens or Carsten Heinz the autors from polynom.sty?
I would like to ask them about an extension
( https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/454951/polynom-sty-how-can-show-only-the-task-and-the-result-of-a-polynomial-long-divi )

Carsten's email is in the title of texdoc polynom does that not work? although comments say Heni os current maintainer

cis
Oh, I have been blind: I found cheinz@gmx.de. OK, I will write to Heinz, in the absence of Hendri.

10:49 AM
@cis hendri can be found on powerdot list but the web interface hides the full email freelists.org/post/powerdot/Including-urls,1

@cis I doubt that the mail works, Carsten Heinz has disappeared long time ago. Hendri is a better bet.

cis
@UlrikeFischer OK, I will try my best...
@DavidCarlisle But I don't found Adriens mail in freelist

11:07 AM
@cis as I say, the web interface hides his mail. It seems that he chooses not to make it public.
@cis he is one that doesn't obfuscate the sender too much: tug.org/pipermail/pstricks/2005/002907.html

@UlrikeFischer I thought it would be dangerous. :) But I can enable this feature. :)

@PauloCereda what happens if two people try to teach the same? In the test the result was a bit confusing.

@PauloCereda you could add some exceptions like "I don't want to learn from you, you are mean" ;-)

@UlrikeFischer or "I don't want to learn from you, you would break all my Lua support"

@Psmith Welcome to the chat! I saw you can display ducks and cat, but can you also display random tikzlings?

@DavidCarlisle Yet another student today has written their entire honours thesis using \\\\ to separate paragraphs not blank lines. Something really bad is going on.

12:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle ;-). I was just considering if one can remove some of the older patches from the luaotfload code without breaking unicode-math. Perhaps I should better leave it for now. @WillRobertson

@UlrikeFischer Hmm, does unicode-math have much Lua code any more? All of the Lua specific stuff was moved out long ago into lualatex-math, a package I know next to nothing about :)

Hi. Can someone please explain to me how to "properly" subinclude files? As a programmer, LaTeX has just been driving me crazy.
Specifically, I'm looking to relatively include .sty files from other .sty files, to lower complexity.
Is there any actual way to say "relative to this file" instead of "relative to where this is being loaded from"?

@WillRobertson In \__um_fontdimen_from_param:nn it calls fontspec.mathfontdimen, which calls a luaotfload function. But luaotfload has two font patches to set a parameter for ScriptPercentScaleDown and fontdimen8 for capheight, and I'm wondering if they are not outdated. But I won't do anything rash here ;-).

I've already looked at "usepackage", "input", the "import" package, ...

@AnatolyMakarevich Easiest way: put your .sty files somewhere latex can find them (for example in your texmf tree or yoru working folder) and don't give any path.

12:49 PM
Well, assuming I'm working from a git repository on multiple machines, I don't think that's a realistic option :/
You mean putting them flat in the root folder? ... (after the edit)

@AnatolyMakarevich can you add you git folder to the texmf trees of your machines?

@AnatolyMakarevich not really but why not just \RequirePackage{yoursub-file}` that's what other packages do, just give your sub-packages a unique name (eg a common prefix)

looking at texmf

@AnatolyMakarevich TEXINPUTS=.//: pdflatex foo then any files at any depth below the current directory will be found.

So, give my packages some name via \ProvidesPackage{prefix-pkg1}, use \RequirePackage{prefix-pkg1}, and run pdflatex (and other commands) with a set TEXINPUTS env variable. I'll try this.

12:55 PM
@AnatolyMakarevich the inputs by default are always relative to the working directory from where tex was started, not the directory of the main file so relative paths are not a lot of use in practice, but are not needed as kpse directory searching is fast)

/wiki LaTeX

LaTeX ( LAH-tekh or LAY-tekh; a shortening of Lamport TeX) is a document preparation system. When writing, the writer uses plain text as opposed to the formatted text found in WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") word processors like Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages. The writer uses markup tagging conventions to define the general structure of a document (such as article, book, and letter), to stylise text throughout a document (such as bold and italics), and to add citations and cross-references. A TeX distribution such as TeX Live or MikTeX is used to produce an output...

Oh, I was not aware it was "Lamport TeX".
