4:02 AM
@percusse I just spent two weeks in Italy, I don't need any more Renaissance torture. :)

1 hour later…
5:12 AM
Gradients, jacobians, implicit functions, ODEs, tangents planes, directional derivatives... PLEASE HELPPP
I'm just kidding. I'm brilliant (?

@manooooh Sounds like you have some fun :)

@mickep yeah... especially when today I have the third try to pass the exam :D

@manooooh Well, since the subject is so fun, why not let it be a fourth time?

@mickep of course! My teacher is so proud of me
I expected CarLaTeX was here, now my heart is broke
I will go to sleep, what would you do @mickep?

@manooooh If you are in Argentina, you should probably already be sleeping? :)

5:24 AM
Just a half and a year ago I used to play Lol now, in the next 1 hour and so on
So I am strong, even if I have a duck in my profile photo
What about you

5:53 AM
@manooooh Yeah, what about me? I have no exam upcoming. But I have to plan the teaching (calculus) with the fresh students...

6:30 AM
@mickep nice! What do you mean by "fresh students"?

@manooooh Students that just start their university studies. First year students would have been better...

@manooooh I am here <3

@mickep last year I was in first year of university, I want some people from here to be my teachers in class...
@CarLaTeX helloo, how are you?

@manooooh Well, I slept 8 hours :)

Nice, +1 hour from yesterday

6:41 AM
@manooooh yes :)

@CarLaTeX today is a laborable day?

@manooooh Yes, I'll work in August, I'm going to the seaside in September

@CarLaTeX ... of Brazil?

@manooooh No, of Italy :)

Haha
@CarLaTeX I remember my grandpa tell us (my sisters and I) his story of his parents from Italy. I remember his family were piamontes
From Piamonte
Do you visit this place?

6:54 AM
@manooooh Piemonte, the Region of Turin. I know many Italians emigrated to Argentina, also Pope Francis's parents were from Piemonte if I remember well.
@manooooh I have to go to Turin the day after tomorrow (work reasons)

@CarLaTeX sorry for my bad spelling, I didn't know that! Francisco speaks very well Italian, thank you Pope's parents!
@CarLaTeX nice to know

@manooooh Wikipedia tells Pope's father was from a little town near Asti, Piedmont

Someday I will be a System Engineer and work for Google, using LaTeX for producing beatiful documents and have a ticket for visit Italy

@manooooh and you'll enjoy very much :)

@CarLaTeX niiice
Ok, people have come
I go to sleep, it's time

7:08 AM
@manooooh the pineapple pizza eater is here!
@manooooh sleep well!

@CarLaTeX who is?!?

@manooooh @DavidCarlisle of course!

Hmm
He is a eater of questions haha
Time to sleep here
See you @CarLaTeX

@manooooh I've been wondering since yesterday, are you making these ducks with LaTeX?

@BrainStone why do you not let me sleep? XD, I am not the creator of the duck
It was made using tikzducks package, and the logo of Argentina was made by @samcarter

7:21 AM
Ahhh. That explains it xD
And sorry

@BrainStone hahaha no. I am not laughing.
XD
No problem! Have all a good day!

Hello

@Mu30murugans2katgmail Oooh another duck user!
@manooooh Good night!

Invasion of the ducks

7:36 AM
@BrainStone Watch this video: youtu.be/Ps2FK0q6mLc

8:23 AM
@marmot :) using white colour you could make a sheikh marmot
@Mu30murugans2katgmail With your new avatar shouldn't you say "Quack" instead of "Hi"? :) Looks very nice!

2 hours later…
10:33 AM
thanks samcarter.

2 hours later…
12:16 PM
another fontspec release, another bugfix to rush out the door... oh well, the last update was for a good cause!
now I need to rush home and actually send through the update, because the documentation STILL relies on non-free-fonts (bad me).

12:29 PM
@samcarter -- yos! my first reaction was that this was an image of @marmot of arabia.

@barbarabeeton @samcarter Even marmots have to adapt to the changing climate.

@marmot -- i believe that if one burrows deeply enough under the sand, the ambient temperature is a bit cooler. but there's the problem that dry sand doesn't facilitate stable tunnels.

@barbarabeeton Yes, and ultimately it does not help against the nuclear fallout either (even though we live at high enough altitudes not to be concerned too much by the raising sea levels).

@marmot -- we'll just have to hope that nobody decides to add more nuclear fallout to what already exists.

@barbarabeeton Well, according to what I know the risk of a nuclear war went up after the last elections in the US.... let's keep our fingers crossed.

12:50 PM
@marmot -- sadly, i agree with you. and (as usual), i'm certainly going to vote in every election for which i'm able, and encourage others to do so as well. (for every election for the past ten years, i have worked at a polling site, and been in charge of the assigned site since the 2012 elections. it's important. and i've been really proud of the parents who have brought in their young children to teach them the process.)

@barbarabeeton Thanks for doing that! You may save some marmots ;-)

@marmot -- i'm not sure i've ever met a marmot, but i've certainly met picas and conies in the tetons (wyoming), and they are welcome citizens, even if they can't vote.

1:11 PM
@barbarabeeton I guess you must have some groundhogs in the neighborhood....

1:37 PM
@marmot -- nearby, in the less paved areas. we live right in the city, although a section with trees shading the street (and a library on the corner). we do have urban wildlife, but the only four-footed wild critters we've seen in the immediate neighborhood are squirrels, cottontail rabbits, raccoons, skunks, mice, and possums. nobody that burrows though, at least not that i know of.

@barbarabeeton I see. Instead of raccoon, skunks and possums we have snakes and coyotes....
@samcarter Marmot math ;-)

@marmot OH! That is a really intuitive kind of math!

@marmot ooh

@samcarter Yes, I also do not understand why anyone would use, say, chemfig or something like this any more after your nice packages arrived. ;-)

1:53 PM
@marmot :) I can honestly say that I replaced all my usage of chemfig with marmots and ducks!
@marmot Math before these packages: tex.stackexchange.com/a/368054/36296

@samcarter Why is there no \SchrodingersCat ? ;-)

@marmot -- i do believe i've seen a garter snake. but, last time i checked, garter snakes didn't have four feet. regarding coyotes, they do seem to have moved into this ares, but only way out in the sub/exurbs.

@barbarabeeton A coyote "took care" of our neighbor's cat. (No, their name is not Schrödinger! ;-)

@marmot I tried to convince @cfr to write a cat package, but failed :( tex.stackexchange.com/questions/387047/…

@marmot -- oh, my! (we do have a lot of neighborhood cats. but they're not wild. they appear to be well fed, some of them wear collars, and they are friendly if someone wants to pat them or scratch their ears.)

2:07 PM
@samcarter Maybe she is scared of them? (Some think cfr would stand for "cute furry rodent" but I don't think that's true;-)
@barbarabeeton This cat was, unlie the coyote, also not wild, but apparently tasty...

2:33 PM
Hi guys this is going to sound weird
But I'm not even sure how I would phrase my question to find the right stackexchange question that solves the problem
I'm working on a bibliography and ... something is going on because all of the sudden the command \bibitem seems to trigger something related to \item rather than \bibitem
1 minute while I upload a screenshot
How do I even call this? haha I feel dumb right now

@1010011010 Do you mean that the references are numbered? That's a normal way of doing it, it's because whatever style you're using is numerical rather than e.g. author-year.

3:01 PM
@1010011010 Can you try to make a minimal working example with bibliography (MWEB)?

3:23 PM

@barbarabeeton @marmot Some of my backyard critters.

@AlanMunn Didn't know you live in Nara ;-)

@AlanMunn -- oh, deer!
3

@barbarabeeton Yes, it's easy to fawn over them. :)

@TorbjørnT. I mean that the third reference is really 5 references together, I typed \bibitem 5 times and it typesets only [3], consecutive references are erroneously separated by a "dot", I have not used any exotic or custom commands

@1010011010 Are you writing the references by hand or using bibtex?

3:31 PM
@AlanMunn By hand since my boss requires me to...
It's the worst I'm telling you

@1010011010 Yikes. That's just crazy.

I had to format lecture notes the other day, 500 references
I'm still getting nightmares from it

@1010011010 -- i think we need to see the input for these five and also the one above and below. (and i agree with @AlanMunn that doing it by hand is a crazy requirement.)

The input is simply
\begin{thebibliography}{99}
\bibitem{Beisert:2010jr}%
N.~Beisert et~al., \textit{Review of AdS/CFT Integrability: An Overview}, Lett. Math. Phys. \textbf{99}, 3 (2012), \doi{10.1007/s11005-011-0529-2}.

\bibitem{Dolan:2003uh}
L.~Dolan, C.~R.~Nappi and E.~Witten, {\textit{A Relation between approaches to integrability in superconformal Yang-Mills theory}}, {J. High Energy Phys. \textbf{0310}, 017 (2003)}, \doi{10.1088/1126-6708/2003/10/017}.%

\bibitem{Bernard:1992ya}
D.~Bernard, \textit{An Introduction to Yangian Symmetries}, Int. J. Mod. Phys. B \textbf{7}, 3517 (1993), \doi{10.1142/S02179
I will construct an MWE though, the input is as plain as can be

@1010011010 Unfortunately this fragment doesn't show the problem. Unless there's something in your definition of \doi. Is that from a package?

3:40 PM
@barbarabeeton Ask not what your computer can do for you. Ask what you can do for your computer.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen lol

↑↑ – Peter G. Neumann (of RISKS Digest). Wish I could say I had thought of it myself.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen This is similar to some user interface design: "Here's a fork. Now go eat your soup."

@AlanMunn :)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen -- there are days when "throw it out the window" would be entirely satisfying.

3:43 PM
@barbarabeeton Defenestration. Very effective, but make sure nobody is underneath.

@AlanMunn -- actually, using hashi and drinking the liquid directly from the bowl works very well indeed. (as we confirmed last night with miso shiru.)

Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. The term was coined around the time of an incident in Prague Castle in the year 1618, which became the spark that started the Thirty Years' War. This was done in "good Bohemian style" and referred to the defenestration which had occurred in Prague's City Hall almost 200 years earlier (July 1419), which also at that occasion led to war, the Hussite war. The word comes from the New Latin de- (out of or away from) and fenestra (window or opening). Likewise, it can also refer to the condition of being thrown out of a window...

@AlanMunn Compiling the mwe now give me a moment

@barbarabeeton More evidence to my suspicion that @AlanMunn lives in Nara....

@HaraldHanche-Olsen -- not likely, since my office is on ground level, and the depth from the nearest window to the bank of plantings is less than a meter.

3:47 PM
@barbarabeeton Ah. I am on the 11th floor myself, but almost directly above the main entrance to the building, so I cannot defenestrate anything.

@marmot -- do the deer in nara try to steal maps from visitors' hands? i know the deer on miyajima do (and have the evidence at home; paper isn't a suitable diet for deer).

@barbarabeeton The Nara deer are a bit picky, they only take invertible maps ;-)

In other news, the venue where the opening of the International Congress of Mathematicians was to take place tomorrow, burned yesterday. Inevitably, the organisers are scrambling to get it moved.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Oh goodness

@JosephWright Indeed. Apparently, all the technical equipment was set up and ready to go, but it too was lost in the fire.
But the conference center has plenty of capacity, so apart from the scramble to get everything set up again, they got it covered. (Or so I hear.)

2 hours later…
5:34 PM

6:20 PM
@JosephWright Clearly, someone's weekend didn't turn out as planned. But at least on the outside, they seem confident that they can work it out.

3 hours later…
9:23 PM
@JosephWright just got home, seems to be an envelope.

@DavidCarlisle Yup, from Frank really ...

@JosephWright standard team policy, always blame someone else:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yup, ideally someone not present (see team notes)
