1:41 AM
@DavidCarlisle visiting https://texfaq.org does not work for me, but visiting http://texfaq.org redirects to http://www.tex.ac.uk which redirects to https://texfaq.github.io (which works)

4 hours later…
5:57 AM
@marmot Do you like my new avatar?

@CarLaTeX Hmmh I don't see a new avatar, meaning isn't it the same as yesterday?

@marmot On the chat room it is updated later, see on the main site...

I really love it! ;-)
@CarLaTeX But you could remove (c) marmot.... ;-)

@marmot Of course no! I'm the only user with a copyrighted avatar :):):)

6:32 AM
@CarLaTeX Got a new car?

@egreg Yes, a LaTeX car

7:34 AM
@CarLaTeX You should have stuck to Henry Ford's colour scheme
@ShreevatsaR yes thanks It's just a matter of juggling the certificates and redirects to agree with each other, Stefan will fix I'm sure.

@DavidCarlisle I don't like black, it's depressing :)

@CarLaTeX it's refined and dignified not like people who flash around in showy red sportscars:-)

@DavidCarlisle Ferrari are red, I have to adequate to their standard by patriotism.

7:51 AM
@CarLaTeX they get beaten by Mercedes that are built just down the road from here:-)

@DavidCarlisle It's only temporary, they will win again sooner or later :):):)

8:09 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ideally, I think we want the CNAME business sorting

@JosephWright yes it would be better if the redirects ended up with texfaq.org showing as the url

@DavidCarlisle ooh a Mercedes

@PauloCereda well known Northamptonshire car firm

@DavidCarlisle Do you have one? :)

@PauloCereda The ones they build in Brackley are a little expensive

8:19 AM
@DavidCarlisle but it is a Mercedes!
@DavidCarlisle it might be in your garage or near the willow tree, close to your Austin-Healey. :)

@PauloCereda yes but they cost a few million pounds and they are not road-legal.

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@PauloCereda and rubbish as a family car, no luggage space or passenger seats at all.

@DavidCarlisle thought so. :)

@PauloCereda but they are a proper grey colour not red like @CarLaTeX

8:23 AM
@DavidCarlisle wacky red cars made by Italians. :)
A car that I never understand is the Smart one. It is seldom seen in Brazil, but oh boy it seems to be a lot in Europe!
It's from a subsidiary of Mercedes, isn't it?

@PauloCereda more in cities than round here but yes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_(marque)

@DavidCarlisle There is a wide range of colors: autoblog.it/post/21463/…

@DavidCarlisle ah interesting
@CarLaTeX ooh xcolor

@PauloCereda There are a lot of smarts in Milan :)

@CarLaTeX Do they work, actually? I question if they are stable in roads!

yo'
8:36 AM
@PauloCereda driving 50kph in cities for sure. 80kph on city freeways too, and people don't use them that much outside the city

@PauloCereda They are very suitable as city-cars, where there is no room for parking. I wouldn't use them on a motorway, but I saw them also there...

@yo' Ah interesting.
@CarLaTeX Got it!

yo'
@PauloCereda it's really a shopping cart with a roof and an engine :)

@yo' ooh and a horn

yo'
8:54 AM

@yo' ooh

I just had a look at the pgf/tikz manual on ctan (ctan.org/pkg/pgf). It says teh the last version is from 2015. Is all activity on top of an "stable" pgf then?

@Dr.ManuelKuehner What do you mean?

@TorbjørnT. That I am surprised that there is no newer version of tikz, since tikz is a very important and active part of LaTeX (my impression)

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Well, the devs have, for reasons I don't know, chosen not to release a lot of small upgrades after the major 3.0 release. That's just how it is.

9:05 AM
@TorbjørnT. Ok, I see. Thanks for the reply.
Something else, if I click on edit a post here in eth chat, then the text is white in the edit box and I almost can't read it. Is that also true for others here?

arara is 20 stars to reaching 200!

@Dr.ManuelKuehner The developers are still active though (tex.stackexchange.com/questions/427890/…).

@TorbjørnT. Good to hear :).

@Dr.ManuelKuehner It happens to me, too with Crome, but not with IE or on my smartphone

@CarLaTeX Ah ok. I thought until today that teh edit function isn't working at all :)

9:12 AM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner I think it's a browser problem but I haven't found a solution till now

@CarLaTeX Something for META maybe?

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Yes, please ask (I have no time at the moment)

anyone else watching the ISS live stream on YT?

@naphaneal ISS?

@PauloCereda International Space Station

9:24 AM
@naphaneal ooh link please
I will try to zoom into my house and see my cat in the roof

@naphaneal Dankeschon!
Where's that Zarathustra bloke with the song thingy
doooooo.... do doooooooo... do do do do do... doooooooo... do doooooooooooooo...
I bet the ISS is using @Stefan's kitchen server

Strauss, Op. 30?

@naphaneal ooh that one I guess

I wonder, if the astronauts can rad the chat.

9:33 AM
@naphaneal They might need to \rotatebox first. :)

@PauloCereda probably. but I hear reading in all sorts of positions is a must-have skill
when applying for a job as an astronaut

@naphaneal ooh

that background music makes me wanna pee+

9:54 AM
@naphaneal oh no

2 hours later…
11:31 AM
testing
@CarLaTeX @Dr.ManuelKuehner for me in chrome (and Firefox) it's white text on grey. If I hit F12 to open the developer tools while in the edit box, I see that the are three stylesheets specifying a background colour, are the two chat-specific ones failing to load for you? I see:

11:49 AM
@DavidCarlisle I'm not at home at the moment, I'll try tonight, thank you!

12:33 PM
@PauloCereda Microsoft bought my servers for $7.5 billion. Then I bought the ISS and start hosting my servers there. Solar energy and much better cooling. And out of governments range for carefree Bitcoin mining to buy Microsoft later (getting my kitchen server back).

I honestly can't tell wether or not this question is on-topic. It's a question about a failing TeXstudio installation. Would it be off topic? The help center says "Related software and tools, BibTeX, MakeIndex, Lyx, etc." is on topic. Would TeXstudio fall under "related software"?

@StefanKottwitz :)

12:52 PM
@AndreasStorvikStrauman editor related questions are normally considered on topic if they are reasonably tex related, I guess that one is, mostly a question of windows file system association of default program to .tex extension i would guess
I am sure no one here would be surprised that I'm now a published translator...

First draft of my defence presentation slides is done.

@PauloCereda The most important question: Comic Sans or Lucida?

@mickep Unexpected answer: none! :)
@mickep For my slides, FiraSans!

@PauloCereda And what did you choose as background music?

Amazing sans font for slides!

1:01 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, you are so modern! :)

@PauloCereda which has more text, the slides or the thesis?

@StefanKottwitz Chopin's piano sonata n. 2 op. 35.
@egreg, @yo' musical reference. ^^ :)
@mickep oh stop you <3
@DavidCarlisle the slides the thesis :)

Jan 12 '16 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@PauloCereda Since you submitted the thesis, I guess you defend it pretty soon! Nervous?

1:05 PM
@mickep A lot, actually. :)
@mickep: I won't antecipate the date, but I will tell you when the day arrives. :)

@PauloCereda Just imagine that it is not you but the opponent who is naked, and everything will go well.

@mickep ooh naked people
@mickep in 2018, someone is defending a thesis on macro expansions. :)
3

@PauloCereda Hehe, good luck! :)

@mickep Thank you! <3 I will tell you guys when I am about to defend.

@CarLaTeX I love your new avatar! If you are now the first to answer a question, it's probably thanks to this fast car - all the others are still on the road to the question :)

1:11 PM
@samcarter a duckmobile :)

@samcarter marmot has been faster than me just this morning

@PauloCereda can it be more scary than this?:

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@CarLaTeX Well, @marmot doesn't need to follow the curvature of the Earth and just can dig a tunnel to take the direct route...
4
@PauloCereda To the duckmobile!

@samcarter /cue Batman song

1:22 PM
@PauloCereda :)

@samcarter LOL

@CarLaTeX My username knows this concept, it's just the same as for wormholes :)

yo'
@PauloCereda oh Shoppin'

@yo' ooh :)

@samcarter :):):)

1:56 PM
@samcarter Please do not tell @CarLaTeX that I have a remote control for the car. ;-)
@samcarter You must be related to Randolph Carter then.

2:18 PM
Test
@DavidCarlisle I am not sure if I did what you asked for :)

2:40 PM
yes in the styles tab (which you have on the right in the top half of the control bar it shows all the properties, and where they are set, you can't see background-color in the image you show but it will be in that panel

3:00 PM
@marmot Oooh

@DavidCarlisle Something else I could do? It's not a major problem. I am just surprised that there is a problem in Chrome (I did not have fancy extensions installed btw).

3:32 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner if you know your way around that console you should either see that the background colour is set to grey or that some stylesheet failed to load or something. But you can't actually change anything there (apart from the current session) so it would only be debugging for stackexchange and it's easier for them to debug as they have the sources

@DavidCarlisle Understood. Then I won't dig further.

3:53 PM
when I'm away the ducks invade the sitting room and watch english parades:

I made a new tutorial about MiKTeX and Texmaker for Windows. Maybe it is interesting for some of you (to refer it to new users). As usual, it took way longer than planned :).

@egreg Garda <3<3<3 where? Limone?

@CarLaTeX Torbole
@CarLaTeX Ice cream stop. :-)

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Nice! And I like the GlaDOS-like voice. :)
2

6:16 PM
@PauloCereda Haha. I use a Microsoft voice since the workflow was easy (and free). There are cool Google voices and other commercial voices that are much better.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner Cool! I like it!

@egreg slurp!

7:08 PM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner -- the first few minutes look promising, but, sad to say, to this listener, the pronunciation of latex and miktex is dreadful. (i work with tex on a unix system, so the instructions aren't actually relevant to me, but i do have some control over pointers for users. i'll watch/listen to the whole presentation in a few days when i have more time.)

7:21 PM
@barbarabeeton Haha, I see what you mean. The instructions are not relevant at all for you. Even if you were using Windows. It's very very basic. I cover what I assume is the first tough step for non-nerds.
@barbarabeeton I won't change the video anytime soon. It took me over a week (part-time) to finish it :(). But if you have good pointers, I will consider them in a new version in the future.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner -- actually, i think the instructions are worthwhile for a new latex user on windows. but the pronunciation was, unfortunately, what i noticed first and most directly. (since i learned how to pronounce tex and latex from knuth ans lamport directly, and have had more exposure than i would like to the "other" form of latex, or at least advertisements for it, i find the pronunciation of the "x" most unfortunate. a more appropriate pronunciation would be "tek".)

@barbarabeeton Maybe next time I give the text2speech software a "ch" but print a "x" in text subtitle.
from knuth and lamport directly, --> crazy!

@Dr.ManuelKuehner -- that would probably work, as long as a "german" pronunciation of the "ch" is used.

@barbarabeeton You are right :). I still call this a luxury problem :)
@barbarabeeton Going offline now. Thanks for the feedback/response.

@egreg I can see two friends ;-)

yo'
7:38 PM
@barbarabeeton but we all who know how to pronounce "ch", the "k" is unfortunate :-)

@yo' At least in English it's only unfortunate if you like to be pretentious. :)

@yo' -- but "ek" is better than "ecks". (i'm assuming that the voice-over is integral, not something added at the remote site. if you don't know what i was referring to in my rant, take a look at yandy.com which is what happened after y&y departed from the tex scene.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton i just switched off my pc and the mobile is ... inconvenient.
However, I agree: LaTeX is sexy clothing, but for text, not for people.

@yo' -- okay, but if you do come back to it, i'm interested in your reaction then. (understand the inconvenience of mobiles. my cell phone and i have an entirely dysfunctional relationship.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton you can divorce it :)
Funnily.enough, my mom has been speaking for months about how she'll need a new phone and how disastorous that's gonna be

7:47 PM
@yo' -- but then i won't get reminders about my dentist appointments. (our land line is currently inoperative, so i'm stuck.)

yo'
@barbarabeeton oh well, you know this? :)

@yo' -- your mom has my sincere sympathies. (maybe this is something that comes with advancing age. like my inability to cope easily with guis -- i want a command line!)

yo'

@yo' -- i do write down the dates, but i'm too disorganized, and lose the paper they're written on. so it's appreciated that someone from the dentist (or doctor)'s office calls me a few days in advance to confirm that i'm actually intending to show up.

yo'
@barbarabeeton that's literally non-existant here (such a.swrvice)

8:01 PM
@yo' -- health care services are surely different in different countries. here, it's routine, so that the provider can know, or at least predict, if the patient is likely to be a no-show, so that someone else can be scheduled into that appointment slot.

@StefanKottwitz https fixed thanks (I guess that was you?:-) so now if we could make it display as texfaq.org we'd be done I think for the first phase!

@DavidCarlisle yes, certificate issue fixed

@StefanKottwitz thanks (the URL came up again in discussion of a PR from moewew github.com/texfaq/texfaq.github.io/pull/8)

@CarLaTeX failed

@CarLaTeX @PauloCereda today is Donald Duck's birthday, so let's honour him with a toast

@DavidCarlisle Pressing F12 I see this ^^^
@UlrikeFischer Just had one in a toasteria near my home :):):)

8:40 PM
@CarLaTeX that's the wrong colour

@DavidCarlisle I see the letters in white

@CarLaTeX yes but background should be dark, I'll show chrome..

@CarLaTeX Well, the reason might be that they are white. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle the background is almost white, I can't see anything
@marmot LOL

@CarLaTeX ^^

8:51 PM
testing
@DavidCarlisle I didn't find #input.editing

@CarLaTeX seems that way

@DavidCarlisle Could it be useful to add my screenshot to @Dr.ManuelKuehner's question on Meta?

9:07 PM
@CarLaTeX possibly or possibly not, see if they can reproduce it. I was using Version 66.0.3359.181 (Official Build) (64-bit) on win10, what do you have?

@DavidCarlisle Versione 67.0.3396.79 (Build ufficiale) (a 64 bit) on Windows 10

@CarLaTeX hmm you are ahead of me (and can't spell Official Build :-) let me force an update and try again
@CarLaTeX Ok I'm at Version 67.0.3396.79 (Official Build) (64-bit), now let me see..
xKAJXlxLKANXanx, no this text is white on grey for me in chrome

@DavidCarlisle I don't know, then :(

9:22 PM
YYZ - FCO - PSA

@AlanMunn flying?

@DavidCarlisle Not today. July. I just booked the ticket today.

@AlanMunn When will you be in Siena?

@egreg I arrive on the 10th. Conference 11-13 and then I'll stay in Italy for one more week.
@egreg I don't have fixed plans for the week at the moment.

@AlanMunn Hmm, difficult to organize a journey down there. :-(

9:29 PM
@egreg It's a beautiful ride, though. :) (I did it once by bicycle).

@AlanMunn Well, yes! But from here it would be all motorway or it would take too long.

@egreg Yes, I know. You're at the wrong end of the country. :)

@AlanMunn It's about 300 km, but from Bologna on it's all mountains and hills, as you know.

@egreg Right. That's what I did. I went over a number of days Milan - Venice - Bologna - Florence - Siena.
@egreg The descents were quite scary in places. And the grades are generally much steeper than in the Alps.

9:44 PM
@AlanMunn It depends on what descents you consider. I climbed this road last week. Or you could try Monte Zoncolan

@egreg yikes!

@egreg Well, you have a motor bike. When I cycled to Italy, I had a bike (no motor) and the Grossglockner pass was in the way (and I had luggage ;-)

@AlanMunn The last red part for Passo S. Pellegrino is 15%, with a part at 18%.
@marmot Very nice tour!

@egreg Indeed, it was. And of course I had to come back. Again Grossglockner... ;-)

@marmot The Tauern have that small problem: either you cross them through the Großglockner, or you go around them. But there's a train…

9:52 PM
@egreg Well, I really liked the Grossglockner pass. Actually, there was a pass called Wurzenpass between Austria and Slowenia, which was much steeper (but of course not as tall). One tends to underestimate the "small" passes....

@marmot Very steep indeed and usually cold in the Austrian side even in the summer. I know it quite well.

@egreg Well, when you bike it up, you actually appreciate the fact that it is not too hot... but overall I was very lucky. Out of the 7 days of biking, only in the very beginning there was some precipitation....

@marmot I took a shower there, once. :-) Sudden storm, just down from it in Austria; happily, there's a gas station nearby.

@egreg Actually, I must correct myself. I also got rained on in Slowenia, in a region in which the map had not much to do with reality (they were claiming the road was paved, but it was not). So at the end I could not feel my legs any more because they were too cold.... it is funny feeling when you see that your foot touches the ground but you don't feel the resistence...

@marmot Like a road I did today. :-) About 10 km not paved at about 2000 m altitude.
@marmot But the landscape was worthy the pain.

10:02 PM
@egreg Yes, I think I know what you mean. (In the US one can do independence pass, which is about 3600m above the sea level. Interestingly during day time it is often so warm that you only need shorts and a shirt....)

@marmot ^^^ (not my photo)

@egreg Is that some remainder from one of the world wars?

Hello guys.
I need help with TeXstudio scripts. If anybody could help, I appreciate.
I am using `app.getManagedAction("main/view/show/outputview").trigger()` to open/close the output panel.
I'd like to clean the panel when open it.
Thanks in advance.

@marmot Possibly a memorial.
@marmot Those roads were military, because the zone was the front near mount Adamello.

@egreg Yes, I have seen tons of those in northern Italy on hikes. If I remember correctly, these were in this range.

10:18 PM
@marmot In that zone, north of Brescia, there are three valleys: Sabbia, Trompia and Camonica, from East to West; the first one leads directly to Trentino, with no pass, the third one leads to the Tonale pass. So it was important to have communications between those valleys and the roads were built.

@egreg Gotta go now, cycle to some place by the ocean with original Italian gelati and pizza places... ;-) (And yes, I also hiked in Trentino, they even have a physics center in Trento which is a reasonable base camp ;-)
