6:05 AM
@PauloCereda — I haven't organised plans in Sao Paulo yet (I will be there only a couple nights July 10,11,12). Do you know anything about Sao Paulo??

1 hour later…
7:16 AM
Reading over the FAQ, a lot of the basic stuff is pretty good :)

8:04 AM
@JosephWright yes I've been looking for post 2015 changes mostly, I think I'm going to re-write FAQ-noroom but the basics were founded on decades of c.t.t answers so pretty well tested...

@DavidCarlisle Sure
@DavidCarlisle I'm just about done going over all of the 'background' category and updating: expect a push in about five minutes (I don't want to push every single change)

@JosephWright OK

@DavidCarlisle I'll probably finish these content updates then look at sorting a theme (plus of course other stuff, like going for a cycle ride!)

@JosephWright oh yes, real life

8:50 AM
@UlrikeFischer woooooo
@WillRobertson quite a bit. :)

9:21 AM
GOOD MORNING
People are sleepy today

@PauloCereda No, but rather productive ;)

9:38 AM
@PauloCereda Hello

@JosephWright ooh :)
@TeXnician ooh :)

10:18 AM
@JosephWright can you see why tex-faq.github.io/FAQ-HPdrivers isn't redirecting to tex-faq.github.io/FAQ-driver ?

1 hour later…
11:24 AM
@JosephWright "It's less likely that hobbyists would be running TOPS-20 machines" I wonder if that is still true? :-)

1 hour later…
12:44 PM
@PauloCereda :) Any idea where I should stay to be easy to get around? I remember it to be a very large and complicated city...

1:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes: it's redirect_from: with an underscore (caught me out too first time)
@DavidCarlisle I think we probably want to rework all of the distro answers, probably adding 'TeX Live or MiKTeX' (with a neutral answer)

1:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle A lot of that stuff is ancient

2:01 PM
@JosephWright ah so it is, thanks, you fixed, I see.

@WillRobertson In SP? Tricky. :) I will poke a friend and ask for advice. Also, getting the gist of our metro system is very useful. :)

@JosephWright @WillRobertson @egreg see comments under
@DavidCarlisle Regarding the change in \@makecaption: Please offer \@prepareslc (like \caption@prepareslc) so other packages can re-define stuff for preparation of the single-line-check, too. (\g@addto@macro\@prepareslc{...}) — Axel Sommerfeldt 39 mins ago

2:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Changing \@makecaption risks breaking tons of journal classes.

@PauloCereda Thanks! I may have a contact there, too, but so far I haven't heard back from her...

@egreg basically what I said in my initial comment

@DavidCarlisle I would say hooks in some of the right places would be as much as we can do in heavily-customised parts of the code such as this. Of course a bit debatable then how much of an improvement it is.

@DavidCarlisle On the other hand, several just do \def\@makecaption...

yes we probably we need to see what they actually do... on the other hand the the traditional line has been that caption handling is very basic, and if you need customisable hooks use the caption package...

2:33 PM
@WillRobertson My pleasure. I think I might be able to go to SP in one of those days, if you need assistance...
Hey, it does not make sense to have a twoside manual for online browsing, does it?

@PauloCereda No, rather stick to leaflet formats ;)

@TeXnician ooh guerrilla marketing. :)
@TeXnician also, expect a mail soon, I just eating my dessert and will reply after it. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, and don't forget to put a picture on each page :)
@PauloCereda Oh, what do you have? Cookies?

@TeXnician ENLARGE YOUR THESIS
2

@PauloCereda That's always good. Simply apply a scale=5 to all tikzpictures or use some larger font.

2:47 PM
@TeXnician I wish. :) It's banana mixed with oatmeal. :)
@TeXnician The funny thing is that my advisor confessed the font I used looked very nice on a printed paper. :)

@PauloCereda Doesn't sound like something I would want for dessert ;)

@TeXnician you guys have Apfelstrudel. :)

@DavidCarlisle you probably never had a document which uses KOMA, caption and babel-french and then had to figure out who is actually to blame for the caption format ;-).

@UlrikeFischer ooh le cannard

@PauloCereda Oh, advisors that value typography are always great (I unfortunately have no experience in this, because my advisors didn't)…

2:49 PM
@TeXnician ooh :)

@PauloCereda Yes and it's delicious :)

@UlrikeFischer any combination of those three == not my fault

@TeXnician Speaking of delicious, I miss Portugal... :D

@PauloCereda "Yummy pastéis" ;)

@PauloCereda boa tarde o pato!

2:50 PM
@TeXnician ooh secret code!

@DavidCarlisle Really? There's LaTeX kernel involved.

@UlrikeFischer ooh language skills :D

@TeXnician involved, but blameless

@DavidCarlisle well if the format had a few hooks they would perhaps not try all to insert their own ;-)

@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer I thought we could organize a TUG bingo, i.e, cards with some TeX jargon that could be distributed to the audience. Then when everyone hears a jargon, (e.g, not my fault), it marks it in the card. Then the one who completes it gets a prize!
3

3:02 PM
@PauloCereda O Rio de Janeiro é uma cidade muito bonita?

@UlrikeFischer Sehr gut!

3:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Same here :)
@DavidCarlisle Shall I just re-write the entire TeX distributions stuff (one answer plus redirects)?

@JosephWright sounds line a plan

@PauloCereda O meu marido fala um puoco português.

@DavidCarlisle I'll tackle that later today

3:46 PM
@UlrikeFischer cool. :) s/puoco/pouco/g :)

@PauloCereda “puoco” is Neapolitan. :-)

@egreg ooh a dialect :)

@PauloCereda It's actually a language of its own.

@egreg really? Oh my!

@PauloCereda The distinction is rather blurred, but Neapolitan has quite a large literary body.

3:53 PM
@egreg cool!

@PauloCereda O meu marido diza: „O erro não foi meu!“

@UlrikeFischer :) O meu marido disse: "O erro não foi meu!" Very, very good!
Portuguese is complicated.

yo'
@PauloCereda well, there's always the option of twoside manual and landscape pages. With a large print this works for most people viewing the manual on screen.

@PauloCereda He has only done lesson one ;-) irregular verbs wasn't part of it.

@yo' :)
@UlrikeFischer Actually, dizer is not irregular... :D
@yo' I had that impression. Since the manual is becoming larger and larger, I think twoside is a good idea...

4:00 PM
@PauloCereda Or, better, every verb is regularly irregular. ;-)

@egreg Pure conventions. :D

@PauloCereda Now he has started crying ... and keeps stammering „desculpe!“

@UlrikeFischer oh no oh no oh no!
@UlrikeFischer I am sorry I am sorry I am sorry

yo'
@PauloCereda ah sorry, you speak about twoside or twocolumn?

@yo' twoside :)

yo'
4:05 PM
@PauloCereda ok, that's a different story. Twoside doesn't make any difference for online readers other than potentially disctracting them if you use aggressive borders or lots of marginnotes.

@PauloCereda Don't worry. He may be putting it on.

@PauloCereda yes once it gets bigger than your thesis and has two sides, you need to consider whether to use [twoside]

@yo' Understood
@DavidCarlisle oh

4:49 PM
Hello, I don't have enough reputation to comment on a certain post. Is it possible to DM someone?

@Nino no
@Nino can't you comment as you have a rep greater than 50?

@DavidCarlisle 50 is the minimum, and I'm still on 29. Because I only ask questions i suppose, I'm not that great in Latex yet :P
@DavidCarlisle I just unlocked the chat-function

@Nino so it is, I must have misread your rep, still it shouldn't take long to pick up another 21 points.

@DavidCarlisle Well, I'm scrolling through the recently asked questions and most questions are about Tikz and Biblatex environments, on which I have no experience. I'll try to find something

@Nino note that comments are intentionally downplayed by the site design, comments are supposed to just be used for requests for clarification etc, all real text is supposed to be the in question and answer posts. and there is no private messaging even once you get more rep.

5:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle Speak for yourself ;)

@JosephWright that's not even a proper nose!
Thought of the Comestic surgery sketch, sorry. :)

@Nino Like @DavidCarlisle says, this is by-design: the wider aim of the site is to build up general knowledge, not just deal with individual issues for single users
@PauloCereda It's pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove

@JosephWright :D

@DavidCarlisle I've renamed the repo

@JosephWright I guessed that's what was happening when I got a mail from jekyll:-) so you can rename the organisation keeping members?

5:13 PM
@DavidCarlisle Seems so

Alright i understand the intention of the rules :)
Just have to figure out another way

@JosephWright I guess it'll be simpler to reclone rather than fix up my local copy to point to the new place

@DavidCarlisle It's actually trivial to change: just edit .git/config
@DavidCarlisle I've re-created my fork, mainly as that is meant for 'disposable' tests

@JosephWright hmm I suppose so, let's see
@JosephWright seems to work:-)

2 hours later…
7:29 PM
@DavidCarlisle Seems I was right about cutting down the FAQ, if we had two about the same thing

7:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle Good work on the FAQ ...

8:01 PM
@JosephWright 2 pairs:-) meanwhile do you think I can delete FAQ-usepictex.md and redirect to the generic "no room for a new...." question, the pictex one is all about increasing the number of dimen registers

@DavidCarlisle Sounds good
@DavidCarlisle I think there are quite a lot that are so badly out-of-date they can go: ideally we want some truly frequently asked questions

truly frequently asked questions = How to change the font, lol

@JosephWright did you have any more thoughts on templating idioms such as ctan refs or quotes etc. originally I thought we'd need that macro layer to get consistency but the md for the linking has ended up being reasonably compact anyway and I'm inclined to not do anything initially?

@DavidCarlisle Yup, about right: I think I'll alter the \meta stuff to `` <thing> ``
@DavidCarlisle The Markdown is easy to read, and we won't gain a lot changing it

8:19 PM
@JosephWright did you find a plugin for smart quotes or are we supposed to use “...” ?

@DavidCarlisle Now, that's a interesting one: they are supposed to work, and under some circumstances they do. I think it's a configuration thing.
@DavidCarlisle We can sort that at some future stage: scriptable

@JosephWright yes agreed can most likely find them all and normalize the markup later

8:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle Exactly: I might see if we can get some 'Jekyll expertise' from somewhere

@JosephWright don't trust Mr Hyde

@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright -- suggestion: the Often referenced questions list on meta might be helpful for getting ideas.

@barbarabeeton Sure

Thanks by the way! Asked a question in this chat about not enough reputation and some of you upvoted old comments of me :)
Someone knows some tips to "master" LaTeX more? Especially something to master Tikz for example. Maybe as continuation of the Not so short introduction

8:52 PM
@Nino there's lots of tikz example sites or just the tikz tag here, personally I always find best way to learn any tex feature is to answer questions under that tag, it forces you to look at the manual...
@JosephWright grmbl I forgot I'm using luatex 1.09
 Check failed with difference files
 - ../build/test/tlb-callbacks-001.luatex.diff
 - ../build/test/tlb-extraprimitives-001.luatex.diff
 - ../build/test/tlb-ltluatex-001.luatex.diff
 - ../build/test/tlb-utf8-undec-cp1252.luatex.diff

====================
Tests failed, zip stage skipped!
====================

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle Well LuaTeX is almost 'done' ...

@JosephWright whatever still means I need to redo it to get a ctan zip file:-)

@DavidCarlisle Cool
