@Skillmon it's a fantastic sport! Some blokes that are out try to get in, and the blokes that are in try to get out by getting in when the other go out, and vice-versa. However, sometimes the blokes that are out are not exactly out but not technically in either, then something very extraordinary must happen so blokes that are out get in and vice-versa, but not always because of reasons. :)

@JohnDorian you are doing the equivalent of /usr/local/texlive/2018/bin/x86_64-cygwin/pdflatex file so that works and /usr/local/texlive/2018/bin/x86_64-cygwin/texdoc would also work, but you don't want to type the full path every time so put the PATH setting in your .profile or .login or whatever startup file you use

@JosephWright For years now TeXShop has set the default source encoding to something (IMO) crazy: it originally was MacRoman but in recent years apparently Latin9. With the change in the kernel, I suggested to Dick that he use the opportunity to change the default encoding to UTF-8, which he has now agreed to do for the release that will be packaged with MacTeX 2018.

@LoopSpace yes of course (I seem to remember that's all eso-pic does) just put a (0,0) picture mode on the page foot (either directly of via fancyhdr) then inside that you can place anything aywhere on the page using \put coordinates.

@marmot atbegshi is really the same thing but just hooks into the output routine to add a "private" extra head code which simplifies adding stuff there if you are not in direct control of the normal page head, which may have been set by the document class
