@DavidCarlisle I'm surprised you have so much faith in corporate job titles. :)

1 hour later…
1:42 AM
@DavidCarlisle Well, I guess it's OK as long as you use white text color on a white background (since otherwise the result will be rather ugly ;-)

7 hours later…
9:07 AM
Quack!

1 hour later…
10:25 AM
@DavidCarlisle ooh grandmaster XML
or XMLMEISTER

1 hour later…
11:37 AM
@PauloCereda Also Jägermeister™

@egreg ooh
How to read an academic paper.

@PauloCereda Ohh, looking for inspiration on writing your thesis?

@mickep exaclty no. :)
@mickep: although some sentences are present in a couple of papers of mine. :D

@PauloCereda The jargon of writing articles :)

@mickep exactly. :)
@mickep I also have a duck example in my thesis!

11:52 AM
@PauloCereda You are a zoologist?

@mickep worse, a theoretician!

@PauloCereda A zoological theoretician ^_^

@mickep quack <3
@mickep ^^

@PauloCereda Nice! And no ducks where ill while... By the way, I never made any such diagrams, do you want the foot of the arrows to start at the circles or with a small offset like the heads have?

@mickep Oh it's mostly stylistic, I think I always drew automata with the head offset. :)

11:58 AM
@PauloCereda I think you are correct it looks best like this.

@mickep Thanks, I really don't remember where I saw this offset in the first place, but at that time I was very naïve regarding TikZ. :)

@HenriMenke Thanks for asking about the math kerning on the ConTeXt list! :)

ooh ConTeXt

@UlrikeFischer Your example just sent to the list compiles to the following result here (using a late ConTexT):

@DavidCarlisle Other fun with inputenc.

12:12 PM
@mickep it looks like an Elvis Presley song. :)

@UlrikeFischer @HenriMenke Same example with lucidaot. It looks worse :(
@PauloCereda So, you are also a musician? :)

@egreg I emailed Dick Koch and he's going to leave the default encoding for TeXShop as Latin9 (it's apparently not MacRoman any more) at least for the MacTeX release, but may change it later.

@mickep I know a bit, and that's it. :)
@AlanMunn ooh one point for ArTeXmis

12:33 PM
@egreg ?
@egreg oh email, I see

12:59 PM
@PauloCereda Not She loves you by The Beatles?

@PauloCereda Have you finished the arara 4 manual?

@CarLaTeX ooh
@TeXnician oh no

@TeXnician Is arara 4 manual the new @PauloCereda's thesis?

@CarLaTeX Of course, and later on it will be ArTeXmis ;)

@TeXnician We will always have something to talk about!

1:55 PM
@CarLaTeX cricket

@DavidCarlisle we will never talk about cricket, except to make clear that it is utterly boring (which I hereby made)!

@Skillmon 1468 comments proving you wrong:-) chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=cricket&room=41

@DavidCarlisle taking a quick look at those comments, the majority is stating that it is boring, the rest is by yourself.

2:16 PM
@Skillmon why do you think @PauloCereda carries a cricket bat everywhere if it is boring?

Hey guys, do you know if tcolorbox has something along the lines of a halign title after break key? I have halign title=center, but when it breaks, the title of the next frame gets left aligned...

@DavidCarlisle Soccer (maggica Roma)

@CarLaTeX anche Juve a presto

2:32 PM
Mar 6 '12 at 14:09, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda, @RoelofSpijker, @egreg, new house rules: for every line discussing football, needs to be one discussing cricket

@PauloCereda It is the job of @egreg

@CarLaTeX È bianconera la bella signora
Now let's sing more songs about Juve :)

@DavidCarlisle I don't know it, you should keep some lessons

@PauloCereda or you could sing about Real Madrid instead

@DavidCarlisle ooh CR7

2:38 PM
@PauloCereda Seems to be missing (and should imho get reported). But you can do something like title after break=\mbox{}\hfill continued\hfill\mbox{}.

@UlrikeFischer I did something terrible: adjusted title after break={\centering #1 (ctd.)} :)
@UlrikeFischer I think @egreg will hit me on the head. :)
@UlrikeFischer also, thank you! <3

@UlrikeFischer Thank you!
@UlrikeFischer ^^ for the new arara manual. :)

@PauloCereda a philosophical bird ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Kant-style. :D
@DavidCarlisle cricket is the most exciting sport ever
@Skillmon it's a fantastic sport! Some blokes that are out try to get in, and the blokes that are in try to get out by getting in when the other go out, and vice-versa. However, sometimes the blokes that are out are not exactly out but not technically in either, then something very extraordinary must happen so blokes that are out get in and vice-versa, but not always because of reasons. :)

3:03 PM
@PauloCereda That's the most coherent explanation of cricket I have encountered so far.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen <3

@HaraldHanche-Olsen It lost something in the translation, though. :)

Cricket Explained to a Foreigner

    You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
    Each man that’s in the side that’s in the field goes out and when he’s out comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.
    When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.
    When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
    Sometimes there are men still in and not out.

3:23 PM
@PauloCereda Much better :)

3:52 PM
How can I install texdoc? I have tex-live installed, including the documentations, but appearently not texdoc.

@JohnDorian It's a core part of TeX Live: what are you seeing?

jd@jd-linux ~ $ texdoc
The program 'texdoc' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install texlive-base
@JosephWright I followed these explanations quite closely: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/1092/…
Compiling documents works, I got all the packages, also the documentations can be found manually as pdf files

@JohnDorian what does which tex report?

@DavidCarlisle What do you mean? Should I type which tex to the terminal?

@JohnDorian yes

4:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle It says nothing.

@JohnDorian what shell do you use?? try type tex instead

jd@jd-linux ~ $ tex
The program 'tex' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install texlive-binaries

@JohnDorian so you have not put the texlive bin directory in your path, when you said compiling documents works, what do you do??

@DavidCarlisle I am sorry, I am very computer illiterate. What do you mean?

@JohnDorian I mean if as you show tex is not installed I do not understand your comment "Compiling documents works" as if I want to process file.tex I would type tex file in the terminal (or pdflatex file if it is latex) and that would not work if the command is not found.

4:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle I got all the necessary directories and programs. So I told TeXStudio where pdftex is stored and hit compile in the TeXStudio GUI... And this way, my document got compiled.

@JohnDorian that's wrong, you should follow the instructions on the page that you linked to and set your PATH

@DavidCarlisle Ah. Should I uninstall and try to do it correct again?

@JohnDorian no, just set your PATH, re-installing it will just get you back to where you are

@egreg Dick changed his mind, and will make the version of TeXShop released with MacTeX 2018 use UTF-8 as the default encoding. Definitely a good thing.

@AlanMunn Great!

4:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle You really must be thinking I am stupid :-( But thanks for your help

@AlanMunn Where's that come up?

@CarLaTeX My job is finding blank spaces to remove.

@JohnDorian you are doing the equivalent of /usr/local/texlive/2018/bin/x86_64-cygwin/pdflatex file so that works and /usr/local/texlive/2018/bin/x86_64-cygwin/texdoc would also work, but you don't want to type the full path every time so put the PATH setting in your .profile or .login or whatever startup file you use
@egreg do you ever find any?

@JosephWright For years now TeXShop has set the default source encoding to something (IMO) crazy: it originally was MacRoman but in recent years apparently Latin9. With the change in the kernel, I suggested to Dick that he use the opportunity to change the default encoding to UTF-8, which he has now agreed to do for the release that will be packaged with MacTeX 2018.

@AlanMunn Ah right: Latin-9 in 2018 pretty hard to justify

4:14 PM
@AlanMunn What have the MacRomans ever done for us?
3

@PauloCereda they make big Macs

@JosephWright Yes indeed.

@AlanMunn I'm surprised any editors being actively developed are not UTF-8 default

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle I had to learn Ukrainian to catch a few.

4:15 PM
@JosephWright It's really a case of old habits die hard.

Ah: The default encoding in TeXShop has been changed from MacOSRoman to ISOLatin9. This will not affect old users except at one minor spot. (pages.uoregon.edu/koch/texshop/changes_3.html; v3.15)

@JosephWright When I started writing arara 4.0 I decided to add an option of setting the encoding, but decided to drop it by UTF-8.

4:27 PM
@egreg Ha, so it's your hobby

4:38 PM
Anyone else notice that with the update of TexStudio (at least Win version), that autofill has gotten really aggressive, often putting in wrong stuff without an opportunity not to do it?

@ScottSeidman I don't think there are many TexStudio users here.

@CarLaTeX Full time job

KaTeX is faster than MathJaX but the latter produces more beautiful result than the former.

4:55 PM
@AlanMunn -- think I'm starting to understand why.

@ScottSeidman :) I think as you use LaTeX more your need for the kinds of things that TeXStudio offers diminish. And one downside of cross platform software is that it's almost always a compromise w.r.t the interface with the native OS.

5:14 PM
@egreg I intended %=job, Juve=hobby :):):)

@CarLaTeX forza la Juve

@PauloCereda :P

@PauloCereda Those MacRomans are crazy.

@FaheemMitha :)

5:39 PM
@ArtificialStupidity well no surprise there:-)

@DavidCarlisle because he is afraid in the dark and needs something to protect himself?

@ArtificialStupidity also a more reasonable comparison is against mathjax/common-html which is more similar to katex (and a lot quicker than its other outputs) mathjax3 is noticeably quicker than mathjax2 as well I tried katex on some of my pages at work to see if it would speed up rendering and it failed completely.

5:59 PM
@DavidCarlisle OK. Thanks for commenting. I will use MathJaX.

Q: “GOD is real, unless declared integer.”

ToolI'm unable to interpret a sentence though searched and read multiple explanations. “GOD is real, unless declared integer.” a Fortran-based witticism Real is real number, What's the idioms it refers to ?

ELL fun :)

What would be the best way to place an included image at a specific coordinate on the page (ignoring the text flow). I know I could do it with tikz, but is there a method with smaller overhead? (I'll be using graphicx for actually including the image).

@AlanMunn LOL
@LoopSpace Perhaps exploiting the textpos package?

@LoopSpace eso-pic is another option. No idea what's best though, both are mentioned in questions like tex.stackexchange.com/questions/6817 and tex.stackexchange.com/questions/169808

@PauloCereda Thanks, looks a possibility, as does eso-pic (thanks @TorbjørnT.)

@LoopSpace :)

6:22 PM
@LoopSpace picture mode, of course:-)

@DavidCarlisle Can picture mode do absolute positioning?

@LoopSpace no idea about picture mode, but you could try pdfliteral: tex.stackexchange.com/a/369270/2388

6:42 PM
@UlrikeFischer That looks a bit too technical! I'm quite happy to use a package, just feel that tikz is a huge overload for something simple.

@LoopSpace yes of course (I seem to remember that's all eso-pic does) just put a (0,0) picture mode on the page foot (either directly of via fancyhdr) then inside that you can place anything aywhere on the page using \put coordinates.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. I've not done much with picture mode before (read: none at all) so didn't know this.

A: Fixed position for boxes at the body area

David CarlisleThe easiest place to find a fixed point on the page is the page head (or foot) so you can place each of the boxes by coordinate from the baseline of the header using a zero sized picture mode. I just do 3 here, using 1cm units. \documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{report} \usepackage[grid=false]{showf...

6:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thanks. So eso-pic is essentially a wrapper around this?

@LoopSpace I vaguely remember it is (haven't looked at it for decades:-)

@DavidCarlisle I'll take a look. I think I have enough leads here to investigate. Thanks all.

7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle Does your trick also allow one to put things in the back- and foreground? (I'm wondering if this is really the same as atbegshi or eso-pic, which is just a wrapper of atbegshi.)

@marmot yes put it in the page head for the background and the page foot for the foreground

@DavidCarlisle I see. Thanks!

@marmot atbegshi is really the same thing but just hooks into the output routine to add a "private" extra head code which simplifies adding stuff there if you are not in direct control of the normal page head, which may have been set by the document class

@DavidCarlisle Thanks again!

8:20 PM
@egreg Sod. :/ Since the examples you and David provided are now test cases (and green), I guess you were doing something different? Can you share source file and log, please?

@Raphael this one?
23 hours ago, by David Carlisle
\documentclass{article}

\def\zzzz{\zzz}
\def\zzz{\zz}

\begin{document}

aaa\\

\zzzz

\end{document}

8:37 PM
@Raphael I get reasonable output having done the gem update thing
$ pdflatex --interaction=nonstopmode abc3.tex | texlogparser
./abc3.tex:9-10: WARNING
Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 9--10

./abc3.tex:12: ERROR
! Undefined control sequence.
\zzz ->\zz

\zzzz

9:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Interesting side effect of a space:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\graphicspath{{Graphs/ }}
\begin{document}
\includegraphics[width=5cm]{testpng}

\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer I refuse to accept responsibility for user error:-)

9:16 PM
@Skillmon Using \zz? Who do you think you are? 😀😀😀

@egreg :) At first I used \x but then I thought that is not the correct way. \zz seems to be best suited for stuff like that (I verified that with an empirical analysis).
@egreg but DEK would have used \\ I guess. That would have been a good choice, too.

9:35 PM
@egreg :if you had used more z here you might have got a tick

Someone was asking about making ikea-like instructions recently, whoever it was should take a look at idea-instructions.com

@DavidCarlisle When online lives collide ... Ah, well. Just shows I ought to spend more time here, doesn't it.

@LoopSpace well since you made the comments above and below samcarter's I guess you can't claim you were not there:-)

9:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle Actually, I only made the one above. Nevertheless, even if I'm "there", I'm never quite all "there".

@LoopSpace that's what using tikz does to you, you should have stuck to picture mode

@DavidCarlisle \tikz \think of (witty) reply to[@DavidCarlisle];

@LoopSpace it takes half an hour to load all the files, hard to get a snappy punchline

10:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thanks!

10:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle \usetikzlibrary{l'esprit d'escalier}

@LoopSpace :-)
