Do we have a standard answer for bad uses of \text somewhere? Getting a bit tired repeating myself in various answers.

Hello.

11:51 AM
@daleif depends what wrong features you want to highlight eg:
7
A: Why does \mathrm{\varphi} work, but \text{\varphi} does not?

Werner\varphi is a math symbol and requires math mode. Since \mathrm still "provides" math mode, \varphi doesn't complain. On the other hand, \text (from amstext; loaded by amsmath) is a macro that makes the correct choice in font size when switching to text mode - super convenient when typesetting tes...

@DavidCarlisle In this case I was needing it for $\text{X}_\text{Y}(\text{Z})$ IMO this was a rather bad suggestion.

@daleif yes that's the other issue \text picking up the prevailing text font as opposed to \mathrm using a fixed font (rather than the issue of \text not allowing math mode content) couldn't see a simple question just about that (hard to know what to search for)

@DavidCarlisle Might be an idea to make an overview question about \text. Wrong use of \text is on my top 3 of common LaTeX errors in the docs I deal with. So I react each time I see stuff like this. BTW: What is a good argument against users using _\text{Y} without braces. I think egreg or similar mentioned why it was bad at one time.

@daleif x_\mathrm{x} clearly breaks all latex syntax rules (the latex book doesn't even tell you that you can use x^2 without braces. It's unfortunate that it works but we can't change that now. practically speaking it fails in many tex to xx translators that are not using a full tex parse to work out the extent of the subscript. (eg x_\mbox{x} fails so you have to know a lot of the internal definition of the ams commands to know the braces can be dropped. Also even within tex many ...
@daleif ... packages want to make _ an active character reading its argument as #1 macro argument which would also fail as then x_\text{x} would be the same as x_{\text} {x}

12:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle My thought exactly, I was wondering whether lualatex might do things differently in this case.

@daleif no, currently it works same (even with unicode-math) but keeping it working is rather constraining really.

@DavidCarlisle that was another of my arguments against _\text no-one is guaranteeing that it will keep working.

Hi
when I do \showoutput
the log contain the information about the \write
but it use \ETC for long line
it is possible to set to print the fule line ?

12:34 PM
@samcarter LOL

1:17 PM
I try
\expandafter\wlog\expandafter{\input sncf.tex}
and I get
(/usr/local/texlive/2017/texmf-dist/tex/latex/base/size10.clo)) (./toto.aux)
! Undefined control sequence.
\GenericError ...
#4 \errhelp \@err@ ...
l.3 \expandafter\wlog\expandafter{\input sncf.tex}
any idea?

1:42 PM
@Maïeul You shoould use \@@input

2:06 PM
@Maïeul you can set these in texmf.cnf:
% It's probably inadvisable to change these. At any rate, we must have:
% 45 < error_line      < 255;
% 30 < half_error_line < error_line - 15;
% 60 <= max_print_line;
% These apply to TeX, Metafont, and MetaPost.
error_line = 79
half_error_line = 50
max_print_line = 79

yo'
Btw, have you noticed that @egreg was not capped one day recently?

SBM
emacs is so difficult to use

@SBM after a while it gets easier (I've been using it for 30 years) but you don't have to use it, use texmacs or texstudio or notepad or ....
@yo' all the more likely that I win the 654321 question on meta

SBM
@DavidCarlisle It appears to be highly configurable though, which is really nice.

@DavidCarlisle or... :)

2:20 PM
@yo' :-(

2:50 PM
@egreg you should be happy that so many people celebrate Christmas!

3:06 PM

@JosephWright: Is there 'searching' problem within interface3.pdf? If I use Adobe Reader search for something \seq_new:N (for example) right from document start leads to "int Integer-valued count register" on top of page 3.

@ChristianHupfer With Atril (an Evince fork) everything is fine.

\documentclass{standalone}
\usepackage{tikzducks}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\duck
\begin{scope}[xshift=-17.4em,yshift=37.5em,y=0.80pt, x=0.80pt, yscale=-3.5, xscale=3.5, inner sep=0pt, outer sep=0pt]
\path[draw=black,line join=miter,line cap=butt,line width=0.212pt]
    (75.7375,121.3037) -- (72.0960,125.6468);
  \path[draw=black,line join=miter,line cap=butt,line width=0.212pt]
    (67.4146,122.0089) -- (66.7840,124.0432);
  \path[draw=black,fill=black,line join=miter,line cap=butt,line width=0.212pt]

@TeXnician Well, it works for any PDF generated with pdftex etc. but not for interface3.pdf (Any means those I have tried ;-))

@ChristianHupfer Yes, but I just tested interface3.pdf with some examples.

@TeXnician Could you test the index and scroll page by page -- Adobe Reader seems to hang on the page for letters C and D

I am terrible with accessories
@samcarter ^^

@PauloCereda Is that a tie or ... oh no ... a .... bikini top ... naugthy duck :-P

@ChristianHupfer @JosephWright I saw this yesterday too. I can't search with adobe. No problem e.g. in sumatra. Also I can search in source3.pdf without problems.

@ChristianHupfer a very terrible drawing. :)

@ChristianHupfer Well, with Atril and Okular all works very well. Seems to be viewer-and-document related.

@UlrikeFischer Thanks -- I should look up in source3.pdf rather as reference ...
@TeXnician Yes, most likely. I had this once some weeks ago, until L3 packages etc. were updated and it worked, now it happens again (Adobe Reader is still the same, however)

4:57 PM
@PauloCereda It could be improved ;-).

@UlrikeFischer we might end up with \usepackage[rated=mature]{tikzducks} :)

@PauloCereda If you rate that for matures already, what if there is more stronger content? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer ooh you are being naughtier!

@PauloCereda tikz and violence ;-)

@PauloCereda A thong duck for the next TUG Meeting in Brazil?

5:05 PM
@CarLaTeX no, this duck is X-rated. :)

@PauloCereda Adults only duck?

@CarLaTeX :D

@ChristianHupfer, @UlrikeFischer There's nothing 'special' about the PDF ...

@PauloCereda That's what @samcarter thought of when she wrote about moral scruples!

@CarLaTeX oh no
@JosephWright I was going to say that I think corrupted a very strong word.

5:10 PM
@JosephWright But something doesn't work. E.g. if I search for "divis" the first hit is this:

@UlrikeFischer Sure, but what I mean is there is nothing special at the TeX end: I'm rebuilding locally to see if there is anything odd I can see

@PauloCereda :):):)

@UlrikeFischer I get to same position with Adobe Reader on Linux

5:29 PM
@JosephWright @ChristianHupfer I solved it. In the preferences of the adobe reader, in the search entry there is a cache setting, if one empties the cache the search works again (much slower at the first time ...).
2

@UlrikeFischer Yes, done it right now again and it works. Thank you very much!

6:01 PM
@UlrikeFischer Yup, works here too
@UlrikeFischer Might be worth recording somewhere: could you post a question and self-answer?

@CarLaTeX @PauloCereda I am suddenly very glad I added the clause about "moral scruples" :)

6:18 PM
@samcarter You should add the sexy duck to the package :):):)

@samcarter ooh

@PauloCereda You look great on that picture!
5

@StefanKottwitz oi it's not me!
@StefanKottwitz you naughty German!
@ChristianHupfer ^^

@StefanKottwitz LOL

DON'T YOU STAR THAT MESSAGE

6:28 PM
@PauloCereda I didn't make this naughty selfie.

<3
@StefanKottwitz we ducks are shy :)

@PauloCereda too late

@CarLaTeX oh no

@JosephWright done

@CarLaTeX done :)

@samcarter ooh the naked truth

@PauloCereda oiiiii

@samcarter soundtrack: youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ
@ChristianHupfer <3

@samcarter LOL
@PauloCereda g.co/kgs/TpDNQw is more suitable

@CarLaTeX Don't use URL shorteners, tex.co/u/101651

7:14 PM
@StefanKottwitz I'm on my smartphone, I didn't know what I did

@CarLaTeX It was a joke with a shortener (I usually didn't know what I did too)

@StefanKottwitz :):):)

9:38 PM
Another naughty content:
@PauloCereda ;-)

1 hour later…
10:57 PM
@ChristianHupfer -- oh, my! the eyelashes are the crowning touch.

11:44 PM
We've had a bunch of extremely low quality posts today. I wonder whether this is all part of some Christmas hangover underway...?

@ChristianHupfer I was more talking about questions, but that one is also bad. Just flagged it. Aijajai.

@Werner Sometimes there is no difference...
