Quack!

6:13 AM
@PauloCereda Qua qua back from Milan!

@CarLaTeX ooh another duck

@PauloCereda I should change the avatar :)

@CarLaTeX So Prof. Van Duck enjoyed the meeting? :)
I heard he was helping @egreg with some Venetian dialect. :)

@PauloCereda He enjoyed the meeting very much and the participants to it also enjoyed him :):):)

@PauloCereda He learned what is “el Santo”, “el Pra”, “in piassa” and “sotosalon”.

6:28 AM
@egreg ooh
@CarLaTeX yay
Duck selfies. :)
Shaky bus time! Have you all a great day!

@PauloCereda Have a good trip!

1 hour later…
7:54 AM
@PauloCereda @samcarter Do you like my new avatar?

I don't know why but the one in the chat is still old, maybe they update it later on...
The pizza is for @DavidCarlisle ^^^

8:19 AM
@CarLaTeX I see the new one here too. You should design one with "CarlisleTeX" for @DavidCarlisle too ;)

@CarLaTeX Fantastic avatar!

@TeXnician I need a pineapple duck for that!
@samcarter Yay!!!
@samcarter Did you read the message from @UlrikeFischer: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/41?m=40678383#40678383? Many people love tikzducks package!

@CarLaTeX Trying to distract him from the presence of tasty duck? Sorry, I don't think that will work.

8:34 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen I ate bigoli al sugo d'anatra (a kind of pasta with duck sauce) yesterday with @egreg... but don't tell Paulo ;)

@CarLaTeX You mean @PauloCereda? I won't tell him. Trust me.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ops the chat is public...

@CarLaTeX I've heard that some people use facebook to organize meetups with their secret lovers. I am sure it's completely safe.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen LOL

2 hours later…
10:39 AM
Mornin'
Quick question, is it feasible to use LaTeX for making print quality digital designs? Like product catalogs, datasheets, etc.
To be feasible I need to be able to work with CMYK and 300 DPI resolutions.

@WilliamMariager Yes

@WilliamMariager it's feasible but whether it's easier or better than alternatives depends on what alternatives you have available, and what you want to do. cmyk and resolution is not a problem at all.

@WilliamMariager LaTeX is well-suited to this type of automated task, provided you can parametrise the layout in some way

It might not be immediately apparent, but @JosephWright and I are in agreement:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)

10:48 AM
What I've been doing so far is automation using C# + InDesign with COM interop. It's a very slow system though, so I was thinking it might be worth looking for alternatives, especially for simpler projects.
An example of what I'm currently doing is labels for products, which consists of an image, some text, a few logos and a frame.
It's pretty much just a table and some content.
I did consider using HTML, but I couldn't find any tools that would convert to a print quality PDF.
But thanks for the responses. I see a few questions about TeX and printing.
Looks like it's just a matter of a proper pdf export setting.

@CarLaTeX It makes me very happy, that people are actually using this package!

11:24 AM
@samcarter I'm happy too :)

11:44 AM
What are the statistical chances of ones next reputation change being an upvote vs. an accepted answer?

@samcarter I managed to get you a nice palindrome. ;-)

@egreg Thank you very much! Palindromes everywhere!

12:00 PM
@samcarter :-)

@DavidCarlisle Please don't mention the comma :)

@samcarter you are forgiven that for having four in a row:-)

@samcarter Congrats

@DavidCarlisle Theoretically I have two more palindrome on meta, however the rep was not yet updated there :)

@samcarter but not enough royal flushs. You should go for 54321 now. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35885454#35885454.

12:22 PM
@UlrikeFischer Nice target, however this while take quite a while to get there.
@CarLaTeX Thanks!

@samcarter But you can get there faster than @egreg to 654321 ;-)

@UlrikeFischer You sure? ;-)

@egreg Oh a race. That will get interesting ;-)

@UlrikeFischer The only chance I see to win this race is to convince @CarLaTeX to constantly distract @egreg with sightseeing.

12:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle Texlive is now seeing the new patterns but doesnt like the characters. identical problem with miktex tex.stackexchange.com/questions/397481/… but same solution doesnt apply

@UlrikeFischer My estimate for @egreg to reach 654321 is Sunday, 6 May 2018, around 5 am.

1:06 PM
@samcarter I'll do it at every possible occasion :):):)

1:20 PM
@samcarter My estimate is indeed similar. ;-)

@WilliamMariager: I am late for the party, but Patrick Gundlach and Stephan Lehmkke use TeX for their publishing companies. However, I believe the intermediate format is FOP/XSL.
@CarLaTeX: duck sauce?!
OH NO

@egreg my elo is around 1700, depending on where I'm playing

Where's @DavidCarlisle?
I miss him. <3
But he is mean. :)

1:36 PM
@PauloCereda Ops...

@CarLaTeX /quacks in despair

@PauloCereda Very good, btw, I'm sure that @DavidCarlisle would have appreciated it as well :):):)

@CarLaTeX OH NO
@CarLaTeX: you are mean. :)

@PauloCereda I don't have the "you're not mean" reply

@CarLaTeX should I? :)

1:40 PM
@PauloCereda No

@CarLaTeX o.O

yo'
@CarLaTeX I have neither of the two :-P

[paulo@cardiff figlet] $ figlet "You are mean" -f smscript

The second chance for combined main site and meta palindromes worked :)

@samcarter Wow, two palindromes in a day!

3:15 PM
@alfred miktex and texlive use identical pattern files so the same solution will work. make sure the formats did get rebuilt after you changed the patterns

@DavidCarlisle That's what I thought but it wasnt accepting ë. So I changed the patterns to simple set to test and I am getting now a strange error by polyglossia.
c:/texlive/2017/texmf-dist/tex/luatex/ctablestack/ctablestack.sty))...xlive/2017/texmf-var/tex/generic/config/language.dat.lua:764: unexpected symbol near 'r
eturn'
Tried deleting the new language, but same thing. So I'm downloading a iso to reinstall (my connection keeps interrupting and install from network doesnt finish)

@alfred that isn't a very strange error. By default ' is not a letter and not allowed in patterns, (Italian does a special dance to allow it) do you need ' ?
@alfred re-installing tex is highly unlikely to make any difference.

meanwhile I still have miktex and I am searching the dictionary using regexp for 3-4-5 consonant letters to add to patterns. With that addition the patterns should be complete, except for the two word formations egreg pointed out
I should check but i dont think I had ' on the simple set
no it's just \patterns{

@DavidCarlisle also I deleted the new language entry and rebuild the formats, the set shouldnt interfere, although it's the only new change

3:30 PM
@alfred what is the 'r on line 754 of language.dat.lua?

thats a language.dat.lua I didnt modify by the way
it's return that shouldnt be there..

@alfred you got an error message on line 754 about 'r so either you modified it or you changed the context in which it was generated. Anyway it's best to assume the error message is telling you the problem:-)

ok delete and test
access denied (showing I didnt edit it)

@alfred that file is generated from the files supplied (as it says in comments at the top) so if you ran tlmgr to regenerate the pattern setup then you regenerated that file, and if there was an error in an input ....

new error :

3:40 PM
@alfred that is inputting language.dat.lua and failing for some reason

/texmf-var/tex/generic/config/language.dat.lua says Generated by /home/texlive/karl/Master/bin/i386-linux/tlmgr on Fri May 19, what could have been the input that generated the error, maybe correcting that can allow another rebuild

@PauloCereda You should use a special key binding that shouts this to @DavidCarlisle (or me) when being pressed ;-)

corr. -- Generated by C:\texlive\2017\texmf-dist\scripts\texlive\tlmgr.pl on Sun Oct 22 14:05:05 2017
I think it was (same return present) C:\texlive\2017\texmf-dist\tex\generic\config\language.dat.lua but i cant rebuild right now, I tried network install and tex live manager says it cant determine release

@alfred as it's not affecting anyone else the assumption must be that one of the files that you changed has an error.

I think there is just reinstalling now

3:55 PM
@alfred as I say, re-installing tex is not the reaction that I would expect from getting a syntax error.

well manager is getting conflicting or missing release for some reason. C:\texlive\2017\release-texlive.txt says TeX Live (http://tug.org/texlive) version 2017
replaced the content of texlive/2017/texmf-var/tex/generic/config/language.dat.lua with that of a language.dat.lua that I had on local and it compiles. so that's one solved
what should C:\texlive\2017\release-texlive.txt say at the end. it's one line with a date
I guess it's texlive-20170523

@alfred the entire file looks as below but you should never need to touch it.
TeX Live (tug.org/texlive) version 2017

This file is public domain. It is read by install-tl --version,
tlmgr --version, and texconfig conf, and a final line appended with
the precise version number by tl-update-images during a build.

The following blank line helps avoid confusing output when
used directly from svn, so don't delete it.

it's probably the source of my problem though. I was following this tex.stackexchange.com/questions/252653/…
strange you dont have that line
no same problem
I added texlive-20170523

4:14 PM
@alfred don't edit the file at all

it worked in that question. I changed it back. gui still not working
or maybe it didnt

1 hour later…
5:44 PM
Does anybody know of a good template for laws and constitutions? I've been looking but couldn't find one

5:55 PM
@JosephWright It seems there's no way to add to lists, such as the comparators, in siunitx

@egreg Huh?

@JosephWright Suppose one wants a new comparator \ssim besides the predefined ones. Doing input-comparators=\ssim would remove all previously defined ones.

@egreg Ah, yes: all of the keys are straight assignments not additions
@egreg Interface-wise this is the business about whether keys have a single value you can see or not

2 hours later…
7:46 PM
Where's @daleif when you need him:-) tex.stackexchange.com/a/397718/1090
@JosephWright ^^

@alfred @DavidCarlisle @JosephWright: Christian thinks he found the "expl3"-bottleneck: slow memory allocation. See github.com/MiKTeX/miktex/issues/22

@UlrikeFischer Ah cool

8:05 PM
good evening to all users
@JosephWright, @UlrikeFischer, @DavidCarlisle good evening.
@egreg
@egreg hiiiiiiiii
@egreg now i am into a my car with my laptop.

@Sebastiano Driving?

@egreg No, I'am stop
I not use the smartphone. I haven't it.
@egreg I always vote for your answers. You are very good and I do my most sincere compliments.
Have you got a few scores?
@egreg because so many do not vote for my answers :-) I'm scarce and I know.

8:20 PM
@Sebastiano you do know that it is explictly against the site guidelines to vote for a person consistently, rather than vote for the actual answer?

yes i know. I'm joking.
@DavidCarlisle now i have voted your answer tex.stackexchange.com/questions/397723/…

@DavidCarlisle If all answers consistently show high quality (and I'm sure they do), I don't see a violation of site guidelines.

@Narusan if you end up voting for all egreg's answers than that isn't necessarily against the guidelines (some of them are not too bad:-) but if you state in advance you have a policy of voting for all answers of one person then that is "serial voting" and such votes can be removed by the system.

@DavidCarlisle I vote any answer. For me is not important the quality but the help.
@Narusan hi

@DavidCarlisle Okay, I see your point. I have come across a few (rare) users where every post is outstanding - and to be honest I got into the habit of upvoting without fully reading, but I'll take care of that from now on - and thus upvoted basically every single answer of them.

8:26 PM
@alfred hi

@Sebastiano Sorry, got to go. that was a brief conversation :)

hi

@DavidCarlisle I think that what is important is not selfish, precise, and rigorous with oneself and with others. Even though I'm wrong I always admit it. But helping each other makes me feel better.
@Narusan dont'worry
@yo' good evening also to you
i close now the chat. A best regards to everybody. good work.

9:04 PM
Home sweet home. :)

@PauloCereda Just in time for dinner?

@egreg Yes! :)

@PauloCereda Roast duck?

@egreg oh no

...was I being too harsh?
@Werner what's wrong with you? it's a question about how to draw a graph that has nodes automatically arranged. so yes, i want someone else to show me how to do it, but what's the problem? — HuStmpHrrr 14 mins ago
...then again, I don't understand how this question received the amount of votes it has...

Q: How to draw images in Latex?

HelI'm trying to draw the following picture in LaTeX but I'm having trouble understanding what I should use. I've seen a few examples, but it's hard to adapt them into what I'm looking for. If you could help, I'd be truly grateful.
