3:36 AM
@egreg Congratulations!

3 hours later…
6:15 AM
@CarLaTeX What are you doing at 5:30 am? :)

@egreg No sleeping ;)

@egreg I always wake up at that time, but (usually) afterwards I go back to sleep. I look at TeX.SE just to fall asleep :)

2 hours later…
8:37 AM
@DavidCarlisle UK-TUG 'free pizza' plan looks good-to-go :)

9:30 AM
@Shalvenay Can't comment on "better", but pgfplotstable and datatool are two other options.

9:46 AM
@egreg PARTY!
@egreg: Congratulations!
@JosephWright ooh

@egreg: Magica de Spell is in the new Duck Tales episode! Alas, no Sophia Loren... :(

10:03 AM
Dear Urlike, let me contine our conversation in comments at your answer https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/394807/url-with-as-footnote/394813?noredirect=1#comment981693_394813. inspection of log file show me warning `Package l3regex Warning: This package is obsolete --- use 'expl3' instead on in
put line 42.`

so use expl3 instead then:-)

@PauloCereda Do you know that friends call me MaggiCa?

@CarLaTeX ooh that's clever!

but my package manager doesn't find expl3 :-( it show only l3ctr2e, l3build, l3 kernel, l3 packages and l3 experimental. all this packages, versions from 27. September 2017, i have installed.

@PauloCereda :)

10:16 AM
@CarLaTeX Her Portuguese name is amusing: Maga Patalógika. :)
Actually, I'd write it with C instead of K, but that's the official spelling.

10:43 AM
@Zarko You or some package is loading l3regex. You should change this, but it wouldn't lead to an error about .value_required:. Better show a complete example and the complete log-file.

@Zarko there is a difference between a latex package for \usepackage and a package of files as installed by a package manager. You already have expl3 (otherwise the packages you are using would not work) but if you want to make sure you have the latest, update l3kernel

@UlrikeFischer, i the test code is: `\listfiles

\usepackage[version=4]{mhchem}
\usepackage{hyperref}

but complete log file has 391 lines ...

@DavidCarlisle, i regulary update my miktex instalation. i just tried, but update manager tolsd me, that i have recent version of miktex.

@Zarko You mhchem version is older than mine. You have Package: mhchem 2016/08/07 v4.05, I have 4.07. Run the user update manager.
@Zarko It doesn't matter that you are administator on your PC. mhchem is installed in your user install tree: (C:\Users\Zarko\AppData\Roaming\MiKTeX\2.9\tex\latex\mhchem\mhchem.sty. And this mean you must update it with the user version of the update manager.

hm, possible is proble, that in the first place mchem was installed "on the fly". this installation is not visible in package manager ... so i delete this "on the fly" instalation", run "Refresh FNDB", "Update Formats" and then with package manager instaled all mchem packages and then run update manager which told me, that i have recent packages version ...
@UlrikeFischer, i just doing this ...

11:08 AM
@UlrikeFischer, upgrade take a time ... and on the end was unsuccessful: error: Sorry, but "MiKTeX Configuration Utility" did not succeed.
@UlrikeFischer, however, no my test file works :-)

@Zarko Perhaps you had something miktex related open. Was there are message about a log-file in the error dialog?

log file has more then 500 lies, ast 100 contain initexmf: warning: The link target C:\Users\Zarko\AppData\Roaming\MiKTeX\2.9\miktex/bin/x64
@UlrikeFischer, i had closed all miktex related windos (sumatra, wined, all packages instruction).

@Zarko The last lines are the interesting ones (there should be dates at the start).

And what does ` C:/Users/Zarko/AppData/Local/MiKTeX/2.9/miktex/log/initexmf.log ` say?

11:36 AM
@TorbjørnT. I looked at pgfplotstable and it suffers from the same infelicity as csvsimple re: CSV files from LaTeX-oblivious things, only perhaps a bit worse? datatool does have built-in facilities for this, at least...so maybe that should be my first port of call?

@UlrikeFischer, i only see update.log
@UlrikeFischer, can we continue conversation on evening? now i had to do something what my wife order me :-)

@Shalvenay It's not at all clear to me what your problems with csvsimple is in the first place, so I can't really answer.

@Zarko I quite agree that one should follow ones wife order ;-)

@TorbjørnT. ah, my issue with csvsimple is either finding a package or a substitute for the csv-sorter utility, as my CSV files are spreadsheet exports, and my spreadsheet (LibreOffice) hasn't a clue about LaTeX

@Shalvenay That didn't make it any clearer. A CSV file is a plain text file, it doesn't matter where it came from. Why does LibreOffice have to know anything about LaTeX?

11:46 AM
ooh a lot of TeX talk today

@PauloCereda What about discussing Bolivia-Brazil 0:0?

@egreg bah we are already classified. :) Let's talk about Argentina. :)

12:07 PM
@PauloCereda Brazil could lose with Chile, just to make things more difficult for Argentina. ;-)

@egreg I was thinking the very same!

@PauloCereda When is the next round?

@egreg Tuesday, I think.

@PauloCereda We play Macedonia (tonight, home) and Albania (on Monday, abroad). We need wins to be safer in the draw for the playoffs.

@egreg ooh :D Fingers crossed!

12:13 PM
@PauloCereda Talking TeX, can you try the code at github.com/wspr/fontspec/issues/308#issuecomment-334734543 on a Linux box just to confirm the difference between Herbert's output and mine?

@egreg Sure thing!

Just copy the code in my message and run pdflatex, xelatex and lualatex on it in sequence.

@egreg ^^ they all look the same to me

May you add to the page with the details of the system? The more information Will has, the better.

12:28 PM
@PauloCereda -- they actually differ by one small feature: the pdftex version has just a bit more space between the baseline of "pdftex" and the top of the first line of delimiters, owing to the descender on the "p". (of course, that wasn't what @egreg was referring to ... the delimiters do appear to be identical.)

@barbarabeeton That depends on the descender in “pdftex”, I guess. But Herbert is getting strange characters.

@barbarabeeton Oh my! Does English have a "clinical eye" expression?

@egreg -- strange characters is a problem, the source of which is as yet undetermined. (the descender on the "p" is one of the reasons that \struts are useful.)

1 hour later…
1:54 PM
The president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee was arrested.

@PauloCereda Oops

2:32 PM
@PauloCereda For not aligning the olympic rings correctly?
@samcarter You have an olympic duck, don't you? ;)

@mickep ooh
@mickep ooh we need one
WE MUST HAVE AN OLYMPIC DUCK

@PauloCereda One for every sport, I assume? :D

@mickep Exactly!
Like those posters they put on each sport

@PauloCereda Indeed!

I am a world champion at pie eating
:)

2:35 PM
@mickep In the light of the news @PauloCereda is sharing, wouldn't a prison duck be more appropriate?

@samcarter A corrupted duck?

@mickep That's easy, just insert an error in the tex file and you'll get an corrupted file with a duck :)

@samcarter I will think of that everytime my compilation stops with an error from now on! :)

@mickep You're welcome :D

2:51 PM
@PauloCereda @mickep Should the Olympic duck play hockey or football?

@samcarter no idea. :)

@samcarter options, options, options :) Why not Luge?

@mickep There's a Luigi duck OH WAIT IT'S LUGE ooh

@samcarter what about a duck with a torch?

@mickep Simple answer: there are currently only three sport ducks: cricket, hockey and football - and it seems cricket is taking a bit of a break from being Olympic
@UlrikeFischer That's a good idea! Let me revisit it over the weekend!

3:00 PM
@samcarter Perhaps something with Swordsmanship? Isn't that an olympic sport, and don't you already have Zorro?
@UlrikeFischer The simplest and best idea!

@samcarter There really does need to be a fencing duck.

@mickep Currently Zzzorro is only in the "showcase" section. I am not fully satisfied with the look of the épée and want to change it somehow before including it in the package.

@samcarter @AlanMunn is our fencing expert, so let's ask him! :)

@AlanMunn Dear fencing expert :) How to improve the épée?
In comparison to the rest of the items for the ducks, it looks too frail - but as I understood they are rather thin so I should not make them thicker, should I?

We might need a señorita duck to be saved by Zzzorro. :)
@Johannes_B: Señor penguino, nosotros necessitamos ayuda.

3:11 PM
@PauloCereda I am here, what's up?

@samcarter Well real swords are much thicker than fencing swords, so since this is Zorro and not a fencer, making it a bit thicker probably wouldn't harm. The total length of a real épée (which actually matches well with real rapiers) is 110cm. The blade part itself is 90cm.
@samcarter How you scale that relative to an imaginary duck is your problem. :)

@samcarter Also, the blade of a real épée has a triangular cross-section, and is slightly thicker at the grip end relative to the point end. The guard is 13cm in diameter and slightly off centre (more guard on the outer side relative to the handedness of the user). Guards of real swords were often more elaborate, though.

3:27 PM
@UlrikeFischer Did you get the context file to work?

@Johannes_B Señoritas!
@Johannes_B ooh

@AlanMunn Thanks a lot for all the information! I'll try to come up with a new fencing duck.

@PauloCereda I wish i would have a señorita.

@samcarter For the fencing duck you definitely need a mask.

@Johannes_B you have Shakira. :)

3:35 PM
@PauloCereda Yes, that is correct :-)

I like the concept of fencing

@PauloCereda lol!

Quick question for Mac users out there: How do you preview PDF files? I have been using Skim for years, but lately, it has developed the annoying habit of losing its place when the file is updated. Sometimes it jumps many pages away from its current location every time I recompile the TeX file! I tried out Preview. It is worse: I have to click into it to make it update, and then it loses not only its place, but also its zoom factor.
I just had the idea of telling Skim to display single pages instead of an infinite scroll of pages. It seems to help. But I like the scroll! Am going to miss it.

3:54 PM
@mickep Yes, no problem. I only wished the underlaying code would be clearer. It would be useful to load such "goodies"-files in latex too.

4:11 PM
@PauloCereda You'll ned a shrubbery to go with that fence.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen NI

@PauloCereda oh no!

@HaraldHanche-Olsen :D

@PauloCereda you can practice your Irish accent: (not sure if bbc let you watch that)

@DavidCarlisle ooooh

3 hours later…
7:16 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen You mean as a preview for LaTeX editing? I use TeXShop as my editor so I use it for preview too, but I suppose that won't help you. :) I still use Skim for everything else though. I haven't noticed any particular problems with Skim updating files I'm editing though.

7:31 PM
@AlanMunn Yes, preview is what I refer to. I use emacs for editing, so you're right, TeXShop does not help. I am thinking maybe I should stop telling Skim to watch the file, and either use the revert command manually, or using a script (as they suggest on their web site) to trigger a revert (as they call it) after a rebuild.

8:22 PM
↑↑↑ Apparently, this is now available in Norwegian grocery stores.
And, while everybody think this product will not survive, everybody (!?) is buying one.

yo'
@HaraldHanche-Olsen me wants!

But it has italian writing on the box! It must be good!
@yo' Come to Norway while supplies last.

yo'
@HaraldHanche-Olsen easier said than done. But actually, Dr Oetker is probably not worth it (for the brand, not for the flavour)

Never tried anything from Dr. Oetker, so I can't possibly comment. We tend to start from basic ingredients in my household.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ham, pineapple, ...

8:30 PM
@DavidCarlisle spam, spam, spam, spam, spam …
@DavidCarlisle … eggs and spam – without the eggs

@HaraldHanche-Olsen @PauloCereda will supply the video shortly

@DavidCarlisle I don't doubt it for a second.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle 425 degrees is above the burning point of the dough I suppose :-)

@yo' Probably not in Fahrenheit ...

yo'
8:40 PM
@TorbjørnT. in what? :-)

@yo' Some weird unit used by weird people.

@yo' I din't know, it was just something @CarLaTeX recommended.

8:55 PM
@TorbjørnT. Supposedly, paper burns at 451 of those weird units …
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by American writer Ray Bradbury, published in 1953. It is regarded as one of his best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The book's tagline explains the title: "Fahrenheit 451 – the temperature at which book paper catches fire, and burns..." The novel has been the subject of interpretations focusing on the historical role of book burning in suppressing dissenting ideas. In a 1956 radio interview, Bradbury stated that he wrote Fahrenheit 451 because of his concerns at the time (during...

@DavidCarlisle Only wood oven for an authentic pizza!

9:44 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ohimè lasso! poetic Italian for “oh, me unhappy!”

10:15 PM
@TorbjørnT. -- because csvsimple and pgfplotstable expect a non-standard CSV file format that most notably uses {} instead of "" for quoting text that may contain delimiters

yo'
10:45 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Good to know that @DavidCarlisle 's pizza is harmless to the books!
